lifestyle AUTHENTIC ITALIAN PIZZA Delivering in Rochester Food plus Strood Gillingham and Chatham Who made the first pizza Pizza has its origins in ancient Middle East Babylonians Israelites and Egyptians all ate flat bread baked in mud ovens But it was the ancient Greeks and Romans who baked flatbreads topped with olive oil and spices known today as focaccia bread The kind of pizza we find so delicious of course has its origins in Italy A baker from Naples called Raffaele Esposito is credited with making the first pizza pie in 1889 although it s certain that street vendors sold flatbreads with toppings for many years before then The story goes that Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889 Raffaele Esposito created the Pizza Margherita in their honour The patriotic pie contained only tomatoes mozzarella and basil to represent the colors of the Italian flag The word itself may derive from an ancient Lombardic word bizzo meaning bite Then again it could be from the Greek word pitta meaning round flat bread Either way there s little doubt of its popularity If reading this has made you feel hungry because that s certainly been the effect on me why not check out Il Peperone Piccante for a delicious freshly prepared wood fired pizza delivered to your door Freshly prepared wood fired pizzas Hand stretched home made dough Delicous pizzas to satisfy all tastes Ingredients from Italian suppliers Call 07930 051818 Go online for menu Open Tue Sun 4pm 9pm www ilpeperonepiccante co uk M ilpeperonepiccante 9
lifestyle WEATHERCLAD What is house cladding BENEFITS House cladding offers various benefits most importantly protecting the structural walls underneath from the outside elements changes in temperature moisture and so on In addition insulation can be incorporated into the installation and from an aesthetic point of view it s a major influence on what the house looks like FUNCTIONALITY Cladding can be fixed directly to the wall such as stone cladding or boards can be nailed on to timber battens Whereas houses were once built with solid walls it s now more common for the load bearing part of the structure to be an inner wall with an outer skin applied to form an insulating cavity in between This outer skin really only needs to do two things keep the weather out and create an attractive appearance CONSIDERATIONS In most cases adding cladding to an existing property will not require planning permission because it falls under Permitted Development Bear in mind this won t apply to a listed building If you re considering it for a terraced or semi detached house think about how the installation will affect your neighbours Budget and aesthetics will be primary concerns when it comes to choosing the cladding and there are plenty of options including timber brick stone metal and PVCu which can range from the cheapest to a top quality option in a similar price range to timber e www candlexternal com 10 Protect your most valuable asset Transform your home with Weatherclad We can offer supply only or supply and install by our team of fitters based in south east England Board Size 3600x209x7 5 O Save money with this size board O Fewer boards cover a bigger area O Competitive prices O Call today to see what we have in stock Delivery anywhere in the UK Call today 01634 404324 or visit www candlexternal com Struggling to sell your caravan WE CAN HELP YOU FIND A BUYER For just 300 we ll advertise your caravan on the 20 biggest websites with a stand out advert We can take your photos work out park commissions write your advert answer all enquiries and do viewings Call 07410 488499 for more information Private Sale Caravans co uk BUYINrGyo ur Get more fo ying money bu privately Click on www privatesalecaravans co uk and like our page for all the latest caravans c net

Haunted rochester October is the time when ghouls ghosts and witches are in the air once more Pandemic restrictions may curb parties and trick or treating but it should be possible look out for spectral activity while remaining socially distanced H alloween originated in Celtic times when the pre Christian calendar was determined by growing seasons The festival of Samhain marked the end of summer and the harvest and the start of cold dark wintry months Samhain symbolised the boundary between living and dead and the Celts believed that 31 October marked a crossover where ghosts of the dead would revisit the living Christianity arrived in Britain with its own festivals among them being All Hallows Day remembering those who had died for their beliefs In the 8th century Pope Gregory moved All Hallows feast to 1 November perhaps attempting to replace the Celtic Samhain festival of the dead with a related but church approved celebration Samhain therefore became known as All hallows even then Hallow Eve still later Hallowe en and then of course Halloween A special time of the year when many believe that the spirit world can make contact with the physical world a night when magic is at its most potent Rochester is thought to harbour over forty ghosts in shops private houses churches and pubs Here are just a few of the legends why not investigate and see if any show themselves to you THE BRICKED UP MONK T he Coopers Arms in St Margaret s Street is Kent s oldest pub opening its doors in 1543 The building itself dates back to 1199 when it was part of St Andrew s Priory It s said that every November a ghostly monk emerges from a wall of the bar an apparition in cowl and habit haunting the pub in the dead of night He would have been a member of the Brethren of Coopers who for 14 centuries made ales and wines at the Priory until they abandoned it in 1539 His crimes are unknown but he must have committed some unforgivable sin because he was walled up and left to die Should you find yourself in the Cooper s and your drink is pushed to the floor by some invisible force it may be the monk protesting his grisly fate from centuries ago net
WOMAN in white R ochester Castle is said to be visited by a ghostly apparition resembling a woman dressed in white It seems to be quite a common sighting among global ghostly goingson but Rochester s story has a historical context based around the siege of 1264 when Earl Simon de Montfort and barons rebelled against the King Henry III Fighting in de Montfort s army was Gilbert de Clare a knight previously rejected by Lady Blanche de Warrene resident inside the castle with her fianc Sir Ralph de Capo The siege was cut short when news came that the King s forces were approaching Sir Ralph left the castle in pursuit of de Montfort and his rebels all observed from the battlements by Lady Blanche She looked on as her fianc appeared to return only to be revealed as Gilbert de Clare who having disguised himself as Sir Ralph was able to gain entry to the castle whereupon he climbed the ramparts and seized Lady Blanche still hopeful of gaining her affection Observing this from the fight with the rebels Sir Ralph fired an arrow in an attempt to halt de Clare s unwanted advances only for it to glance from the target s armour and instead kill Blanche Her ghostly white form has walked the battlements ever since forever surveying the bloody battle below ghostly writer S ome claim that the ghost of Charles Dickens has been seen haunting the High Street The writer had expressed a wish to be buried in Rochester Cobham or Shorne No graveyards were available and so plans were made for a burial in Rochester Cathedral However his place of rest came to be Westminster Abbey where according to The Times in 1870 the most illustrious Englishmen are laid Could his thwarted wishes have led to this spectral High Street lingering Or is it just a Dickens enthusiast in a particularly convincing costume 15

community Rochester s litter pickers cleaning with meaning Lauren Clark tells us about Cleaning With Meaning the litter picking group she has formed to clean up the streets of Rochester I started the litter pick days a few months ago after I saw a lady picking up rubbish with a picker whilst I was walking along the Rochester esplanade The river can be such a calming place to live on but so many people spoil the view by littering I went straight home ordered my litter picker and went out by myself My pledge of an hour turned into two very quickly I posted my efforts onto the Medway community group and had such a brilliant response I have now set up a group litter pick event each month to build awareness of what s happening to Rochester and the Medway towns if we don t play our part This Sunday we had some lovely people join in it was a good opportunity to meet new people within the local area we had a couple who recently moved from London into Chatham who joined us as an opportunity to be part of the community and help keep Rochester tidy We had so many lovely comments from local people thanking us and giving smiles of admiration We covered the vines park Rochester Castle grounds the park by the marina the esplanade car park and parts of the High Street David Luck one of the partners of Chuck and Blade Burgers In Rochester High Street offered to provide refreshments and a generous discount on a signature burger after we finished They were delicious David is also very passionate about keeping Rochester tidy we will continue to build on awareness and with time we could have groups all over the Medway towns litter picking every weekend LAUREN CLARK Pictures show myself Tom Lauren Steve Chris Emese Kate George and Jenn If you d like to take part in future litter picks search Facebook for the Cleaning With Meaning group WHAT S THE MOST COMMON LITTER ON OUR STREETS Data on the most commonly found types of litter was recorded as part of Keep Britain Tidy s Litter in England survey In 2018 smoking related litter was the most commonly found type of litter 79 of sites followed by confectionery packs 60 nonalcoholic drinks related 52 and fast food related 33 WHERE CAN I GET HOLD OF LITTER PICKING EQUIPMENT Keep Britain Tidy recommend the Helping Hand Company who provide a range of pickers and hoops You can find out more at www hhenvironmental co uk n Keep Britain Tidy was founded in 1954 They educate innovate and inspire to eliminate litter now and for future generations www keepbritaintidy org 21

community Uganda Reflex supports single parents A Kent based charity which supports the Single Parents Association of Uganda helping many single parents across Uganda who have lost their spouse through AIDS or malaria The founder Rupert Turpin tells us more Uganda Reflex is a charity which I set up with my wife in 2006 I lived in Uganda in 1992 and part of 1993 which was a big new experience for me at the time Uganda was emerging from the terrible decade of civil wars in the 1980s and there was a lot of hope in the air People were excited about the stability of the government new roads being built investment was coming in and the Asian community exiled under the murderous regime of Idi Amin was being welcomed back to reclaim their properties Even the traditional Bagandan monarchy known as the kabaka was edging back into public life and I attended the traditional ceremony changed of course so that the historical human sacrifices were omitted Fast forward to 2005 I had been back in England for some time and made career progress as a teacher enough to get on the property ladder get married and start a family I had never forgotten that period of my life in Uganda and had kept in touch with some close friends I had made there Two of them Paul and Alex started a charity to help single parents called SPAU the Single Parents Association of Uganda At the time HIV AIDS was ravaging Uganda leaving families bereft of one or both parents Children were staying with grandparents and there was severe poverty Of course there is severe poverty now too but it seemed worse then with the disease stalking the land Lots of orphanage charities were started There was a lot of abuse of the system with below standard orphanages being opened to stimulate charity cash flows Very worryingly children were often given to orphanages by one or both parents worried that they couldn t afford to bring up a child and that the orphanage could do a better job SPAU worked at the same Uganda gained independence from the UK on 9 October 1962 with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state and Queen of Uganda In October 1963 Uganda became a republic but maintained its membership in the Commonwealth of Nations problem but with a better solution assist the parent to bring up the children by offering support emotional and financial in small local groups of people in similar situations After hearing about and seeing SPAU s work I wanted to help and set up Uganda Reflex with the assistance of some friends in the UK many of whom have subsequently visited Uganda with me and viewed the projects which we support SPAU has developed innovative projects such as egg production pig rearing soap making well digging card and craft making sewing machine training and micro loans all of which we have supported through the years along with visits every few years sadly the last scheduled visit had to be cancelled due to COVID 19 We are still going strong with a small but dedicated bunch of supporters who faithfully give funds which we can send over to Uganda We are proud to say that we operate on zero allowances in the UK so that we can maximise what we send abroad This means there is no advertising budget so we grow through word of mouth e If anyone wants to support us please google UgandaReflex or call us on 01634305680 Rochester Cathedral Centenary Bells Project The Centenary Bells Project aims to raise 100 000 to fund essential work required to maintain the bells which were cast in 1921 There are lots of ways to contribute from a small donation to sponsoring a bell three new ones will be purchased It is hoped the new bells will ring for the first time in 2021 to celebrate the centenary of the casting of the current ring Search for Rochester Cathedral Bells at www justgiving com 23
community Interview African Parkinson s Advocate Omotola Thomas Beniamin Stecher talks to African Parkinson s Advocate Omotola Thomas Omotola Thomas was diagnosed with Parkinson s disease PD in 2016 at 35 She is the founder of ParkinStand a movement established to inspire people to engage in empowering physical and mental activities She believes strongly in the power of a positive mindset and promotes that message through ParkinStand Born and raised in Nigeria she has also lived in America South Africa and most recently England where she currently resides with her husband and two children A passionate activist she volunteers extensively for Parkinson s charities and causes Could you talk about how you came to be diagnosed with Parkinson s disease My diagnosis story spans three continents My symptoms first started with a slight tremor in my right hand when I was living in the US in 2010 I saw a number of neurologists and went through a lot of different tests Presumably because of my race gender and age no one mentioned Parkinson s disease Then I moved to South Africa in 2013 and went through the process again At the end of 2015 one of the neurologists there was the first to mention that I might have some form of Parkinsonism He suggested that I travel to the UK to get tested by a movement disorder specialist Coincidentally my family was already planning on moving there The next year I saw a specialist in London and the day after he diagnosed me with Parkinson s You have since spent some time in your home country of Nigeria looking Into the state of Parkinson s disease could 24 you give some sense as to what healthcare and Parkinson s is like there Like most developing countries healthcare is still in the process of developing in Nigeria I have gotten to know Dr Njideka Okubadejo the chair of the African Steering Committee of the lnternational Parkinson s Movement Disorder Society she has given me a sense of the state of care in Africa Parkinson s is not very well understood there it presents a lot of challenges because culturally people do not talk about their illnesses but unlike other diseases PD is not something you can hide that makes it a particularly difficult illness to manage in Africa For example I went to the passport office while I was back in Nigeria It was a crowded room and everyone was staring at my shaking hands I was prepared for it but I can only imagine what it must be like for someone who lives there all the time and just wants to go to the grocery store or go to church There are so many stigmas associated with an illness like this Could you elaborate a little on those stigmas Yes I just watched a video of Hellen Mwithiga founder of the African Parkinson s disease foundation in Nairobi Kenya whose father died with Parkinson s People in her community believed he was under a spell or possessed by demons or that her mother had done something to get access to his will My own experience was this after I got diagnosed I got pulled in many different directions from well meaning friends and family members about what religious steps I should take and I found it difficult to respond in a way that would not be considered offensive to them or my own personal faith ls there anything specific you would want to see from the international PD community One of the biggest challenges in Nigeria and in most of Africa is access to medication By access I mean making the drugs affordable available and acceptable I heard of someone shipping medication to Africa that were either at or passed their sell by date if it is not okay for people in the West to use these drugs why is it acceptable for Africans There also is a great need lot more information and better training for healthcare professionals In 2016 there were roughly 80 general neurologists in Nigeria for a population of 182 million source in Kenya there were 20 neurologists for 43 million people source Let me tell you why the international community should care about this Nigeria with a population of almost 200 million is the seventh most populous country in the world approximately 5 of them are over the age of 65 and the incidence of PD is estimated to be 1 for those 65 and above if you crunch the numbers that is a lot of people with PD who aren t being properly cared for I want to make PD in Nigeria and the rest of Africa a global health crisis Originally published on Tomorrow Edition on 16 February 2019 e Follow Omotola s campaign at unitedforparkinsons com or parkinstand com or on YouTube net

community Feeling stressed Discover mindfulness Barry Linney explains this therapeutic technique Mindfulness has been in the news quite a lot recently especially with an increase in stress and anxiety due to the coronavirus pandemic Medway Council was itself offering mindfulness and meditation in the midst of the lockdown to help those who needed it When anything goes from zero to hero in a short space of time there can be quite a bit of misunderstanding too What exactly is mindfulness who should start some sort of training in it and does it require sitting in meditation for hours on end Medway Mindfulness was started in 2017 as a community group to try and throw its hat into the ring and offer affordable access to the first secular and scientifically tested Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course Started in 1979 by the now worldrenowned Dr Jon Kabat Zinn it sought to develop a program for people who were just not being catered for by conventional medicine The eight week course is taught by Barry Linney who trained with Bangor University to teach mindfulness and is now a listed teacher with the UK s leading association in monitoring mindfulness BAMBA The British Association of Mindfulness Based Approaches Something as simple as being more aware of our lives more often can have profound repercussions Many people can testify as to how developing this simple capacity has developed the whole of their life it is for everyone not just those who feel over stressed So much of our lives passes us by because we live on automatic pilot and it is this very habit of reacting automatically rather than responding freely that is the cause of so much stress and anxiety Mindfulness based stress reduction has been developed through rigorous clinical trials to provide an everyday toolkit to help restore this innate capacity we all have to see more clearly what is unfolding in our lives Mindfulness is certainly not a quick fix and the eight week course itself requires a real commitment to a daily practice But for those who are ready to take on something that can change so much the rewards are there Medway Mindfulness also offers taster days and shorter courses It is currently developing a program for being outside as feeling part of the natural world has also been shown to have tremendous benefits to overall mental health and well being n If you re interested in exploring mindfulness in any way contact Barry at medway mindfulness outlook com www medwaymindfulness com 25

back pages All change for recycling logos Following on from the item on recycling logos in the last issue I learned from BBC1 s War on Plastic programme that the recommendations for packaging are changing again The symbols on UK packaging are managed by On Pack Recycling Label OPRL who are shifting to a binary labelling system of either recycle or don t recycle The aim is to try and increase consumer participation by simplifying the message War on Plastic has been highlighting the heavy dependence on single use plastic in everyday consumer items achieving successes such as persuading both Burger King and McDonalds to re think their use of plastic toys in products marketed at children Also under scrutiny were the wrappers used for supermarket take away sandwiches which have hitherto been labelled with the old widely recycled logo The programme demonstrated that the paper packaging is coated with plastic film thick enough to require separation before the paper could actually be recycled The new labelling will allow a tolerance of 10 plastic coating by 2023 to qualify for a new recycle logo 28 YOUR STARS See what the month holds in this astrological forecast for October Libra September 23 October 22 The emphasis this month is on matters at home Take care not to hurt your other half s feelings and beware the appearance of an old flame Don t let a preoccupation with work disturb family life Aries March 21 April 19 Mercury s influence means that any kind of communications venture is likely to succeed this month Finances will improve after the 15th but steer clear of risky investments Scorpio October 23 November 21 You will need to decide what s best for you but be mindful of how your decisions affect others You might need help with financial matters The position of Venus means that love is in the air Taurus April 20 May 20 It s going to be a very social month and Venus is creating romantic conditions between the 4th and 28th However family problems may arise requiring a tactful resolution Sagittarius November 22 December 21 Lots of romantic opportunities will present themselves for singletons this month Mercury will have a positive influence over career prospects but consider carefully before accepting job offers Gemini May 21 June 20 It s looking as though the workplace will be a convivial place and any targets set for you will be easily met For parents you will need to encourage the academic progress of your children Capricorn December 22 January 19 The planets are bringing a negative influence on travel but still you may be required to go somewhere for business purposes Just keep calm and carry on if there s no alternative Cancer June 21 July 22 Mars will bring romance and passion for married couples Parties and gatherings are on the cards for this month At work there will be opportunities to show the boss how great you are Aquarius January 20 February 18 Mars will have some control over you actions which may give rise to feelings of intolerance However you can still make achievements with the help of others with a little compromise Leo July 23 August 22 This is a good month for you to join a social group of some kind It could help you overcome challenges and bring emotional happiness Beware of excessive expenditure at home Pisces February 19 March 20 Love is in the air Chances are good for the start of a partnership between the 4th and 28th this could even lead to marriage Beware of disharmony caused by senior family members Virgo August 23 September 22 Difficulties are going to arise at work but you are the one to solve them which you will enjoy Planetary aspect will force those in an established relationship to make a decision net
