Sarah Marsh, managing
director of Musical
Bumps Ltd shares her
experience of music-
making with the
youngest of children.
“When people ask me what I
do for a living, I say that I teach
music to babies! This prompts
interesting responses –“What?
Piano lessons?, “Aren’t they
too young?” and the like. If they
are interested to know more,
then this is what I would say:
Whilst there are plenty of studies
proving the benefits of music for
babies, my own experience of
working with babies is convincing
enough for me! Despite the
recent trend for multi-sensory
baby experiences, the thing that
matters more than anything else
is singing. In the first three years,
brain development is faster than
at any other time in our lives. New
connections are being made at an
alarmingly fast rate, and things
learnt and frequently reinforced
at this time will be retained
into adulthood. So babies need
repetition –where better to enjoy
endless repetition than in a
song?! Just think back to a time
when you asked someone to do
something. They didn’t do it, so
you asked again. And again. How
long was it before you felt like you
were nagging? Now think about
the song “London bridge is falling
down” and change the words:
“Everybody tidy up, tidy up, tidy
up, everybody tidy up, thank you,
thank you!. I’ve just asked you to
tidy up four times! Did it sound
like nagging? No –because songs
demand repetition, and are better
for it. Try this on your toddler (but
I warn you, it doesn’t work on
teenagers!). So songs are a great
place to establish and practise
vocabulary, ideas, skills and
understanding.
I teach
music to
babies!
But there’s more...Babies need
human interaction. Simple - they
need to see other humans smiling,
frowning, laughing, empathising.
This is how babies learn about
their world and it’s how they
shape their future. Attending a
baby music class is a great way
to learn new songs and games to
play with your child –games and
songs where you can practise all
those silly faces and voices and
where you can have lots of fun
doing so. Putting a CD on (even
one from the best musicians in the
world) won’t be as good as you
singing and responding to your
baby(even if you don’t think you
can sing!).This is true for all babies
and toddlers –in the womb, new-
born and older. So babies need
to learn and babies need to have
human interaction.
When you have a new baby,
you also need to build a new
social network. The world is a
very dierent place as a parent
–indeed things will never be the
same again. This can be a very
positive experience of course, but
is also a little daunting. Attending
a music class is a great place to
meet other parents and make new
friends - oen friendships that last
well beyond the baby years.
So; something for you,
I teach
music to
babies!
4
something for your baby and a
great place for the two of you to
share special times together. For
me this is enough. But you might
have read about how music makes
your baby cleverer too! There
are many studies showing how
music boosts intelligence–some
suggesting an increase of eight
or nine IQ points! Again, I can
only speak from my experience:
there is no doubt that learning is
more memorable when we are
having fun. There is also no doubt
that repetition is essential for
reinforcing learning. The fun had
at classes also really encourages
participation! Children attending
music classes will, most likely,
have practiced or been exposed
to hundreds of words, and have
enjoyed playing with those words
and sounds within songs. These
children will arrive at school more
confident to use their voice, with
a wider vocabulary and better
able to retain and remember
information. I can’t say if this
equates to a higher IQ, but I
can say that their capacity for
learning should be greater! So
why start from newborn? Most
babies who attend music classes
have good early communication
skills (expressing their feelings,
pointing, waving etc.) Socially,
these babies also smile plenty,
are easily comforted and cope
well with new or unexpected
situations. As they grow they
already know the songs and
games, so participation (verbal
and non-verbal) comes sooner
and self-confidence is high!
So remember, you don’t need
gadgets, gizmos or apps. Your
baby needs you. And the best
games you can play when they are
tiny are ones that involve singing!

Children and Foster Carers unite
to record an emotional song at the
famous Abbey Road Studios, London,
to raise awareness of the need for
8,000 new Foster Families in the UK.
The NFA Group has collaborated with over 200
children and foster carers in the creation of an
original and very personal song which raises
awareness of the need for an additional 8,000* foster
families to support vulnerable children and young
people across the UK.
Children, young people and Foster Carers
supported by the NFA Group were asked to
contribute lyrics to create a song responding to the
question ‘what does fostering mean to you?’ Over
160 entries were received and incorporated into the
final song – entitled The Light & The Calm – which
was released in support of The Fostering Network’s
annual Foster Care Fortnight campaign from 13 to
26 May 2019.
An additional 40 foster carers, birth and foster
children, along with extended families and the
NFA team, then enjoyed a unique and extra special
experience of recording the song in the iconic Abbey
Road Studios in London in April 2019. Using the
same legendary studio as The Beatles, Ed Sheeran,
Adele and Oasis, The Light & The Calm was recorded
by award-winning audio engineer, Lewis Jones,
who has previously worked on smash hits and
soundtracks for Hollywood films including Harry
Potter, Black Panther and Skyfall.
In addition to launching the song during this
years’ Foster Care Fortnight – the theme for which is
‘Change A Future’ – NFA Group are also asking their
fostering families to contribute video footage of
fostering life, a selection of which will form an oicial
music video which will be launched later this year.
Emma Finch, Marketing Manager at NFA Group,
said: “The project has had results beyond anything
we would have expected or hoped for.

Thinking
of buying
a caravan?
A private sale caravan is one that is
being sold directly by an owner, as
opposed to one that is being sold
by the park or any other dealer.
Generally, the static caravans
and lodges are sited on a park,
although you can have it removed
if you want.
Why buy a private caravan?
The main reason is because it will be cheaper than what
the park can oer, in most cases many £1,000s cheaper.
Parks will generally have a high profit margin they need
to make on every sale, and they’ll also need to charge
VAT. A private seller will generally look to undercut the
park so the price will be lower. Some sellers may also be
in a position that they need to sell quickly, so are pricing
low to get a quick sale.
Buying privately also gives you a much wider choice
of parks and caravans to choose from. Use our search
function to find caravans that are on a site with all the
facilities you need.
Parks will have a certain ‘starting point’ for caravan
prices, so may not even sell older models. Some parks
may only sell brand new caravans, so your choice will
be limited to this season’s models. And just like cars, the
depreciation rate on a new caravan is highest on new
models. It makes more sense to let someone else take
that hit, and to get yourself a great deal.
You’ll also be able to find the added extras you may
want, something with decking for example.

Matthew Eluwande began his

Wolfs Head and Vixen Morris are a Border
Morris side. This is the most primitive
and arguably the most exhilarating of the
Morris dancing styles.
It is traditionally distinguished by the tattered rag
jackets, sticks and blackened faces of the dancers.
Wolfs Head (the men) and Vixen (the women) go one
further by dressing all in black. We dance to a variety
of traditional and original tunes, with a Gothic feel
and a mesmerising drumbeat.

of a great strength and power that’s all of their

Decktronix was formed over
3 years ago by Daz and Russ
who are professional electronic
engineers and love music, we
started out just o Laker road
by Rochester Airport but quickly
outgrew the space we had. We
pride ourselves on being honest
and reliable, if something is
really not worth fixing we will let
you know and we do everything
we can to help people in dire
straits – even if it means working
on equipment as the event is
happening! I once found myself
tucked behind a photobooth
rebuilding a photo printer with
nothing more than the light from
my phone!
We have Just opened our record
shop which launched on national
record store day earlier this
year (April 13th) . The opening
event was a great success and
not only allowed us to meet new
people and potential clients but
it allowed others to network also.
We have listening decks set up
and we also have DJ decks setup
for local DJs to spin some records
during opening hours. The record
shop mainly specialises in DJ
genres such as House, Drum &
Bass, Jungle, Soul/Funk, Trance,
Garage and so on but we also
have boxes of rock, soundtracks,
pop, compilations, classical LPs
and even reel to reel tapes! The
next addition is to setup live video
streaming to give exposure to DJs!
The record shop is open every
Saturday 11-5 so feel free to
drop by! We can be found on
Facebook and Instagram, these
are regularly updated with any
planned events. The Facebook
page is also a good place to go to
enquire about a repair.
We are an event sound and lighting repair
specialist, repairing and servicing a wide
range of equipment from a DJ
controller to record players.
Hey Mr DJ…put a record on!
