It Can Wait Campaign

"The mission of the "It Can Wait" campaign is to discourage all drivers, young people in particular, that no text message is worth the damages it can cause, including death." This is a program that AT&T started to raise awareness to to the dangers of texting and driving. It began in 2010 as just an awareness campaign, however, in 2012, AT&T wanted to move it from awareness to action by visiting schools and communities. They did the same thing in 2013 by changing their approach towards it and chose advocacy. The two main goals of the program is one, reduce the number of automobile crashes caused by texting while driving, and two, spur advocacy to show that texting and driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving. Even though there are no laws that have stemmed directly from the campaign, most states have banned texting and driving over the last several years. In states like Texas, Illinois, and Florida there is a strong positive correlation between "It Can Wait" messages and projected reduction in crashes.

Facts About Use of Cell Phones

In 2013, 3,154 people were killed and an estimated additional 424,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. Everyday about 660,000 drivers attempt to use their phone while behind the wheel. Almost 1 out of 4 accidents in the United States has something to do with texting and driving. 11 teens die every day as a result of texting while driving. 21% of teen drivers involved in fatal accidents were distracted by their cell phones. Not only can drivers be distracted by cell phones, pedestrians also take part in this. Pedestrians who text are 4x less likely to look before crossing the street, cross in crosswalks, or obey traffic signals. Overall, cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year.
