ThankThankThankyou!you!you!On Saturday 3rd September, Hunter Strength Singleton held it's firstpowerlifting competition, organised by Barbell Death Squad.Months in the making, we hoped we could put a show on for a decent crowd, and an amazing day for our NOVICE competitors. The day started off smooth, our 12 athletes were ready, wearingtheir comp tee's and psyching up for a strong showing. All 12 had never competed before, so learning the rules andprocedures of a powerlifting meet were a big focus for headcoach Rob Allen to instruct.The comp was set in our 600sqm shed, with our 600sqmundercover area packed with cars and our helpers setting up thebarbeque. Our Valhalla Strength mono, graciously lent to us by Leroy at ourBeresfield facility while we wait for ours - was the centrepiecefor the start of the day. A large proud BDS ORIGINS banner withour sponsors plastered about was prominent behind theplatform. By 10am, the athletes were chomping at the bit to hit theplatform and push themselves harder than ever before. Withtheir support networks, as well as the standard gym hypeexpected from Hunter Strength, all of our men and women wereready to lift. With a "bars loaded" by head ref Leroy Scott, our first squatwas to be attempted. Connor Wynne - a Hunter Strength Singleton member - wasthe first to step out. It was a "good lift" of 3 white lightsfrom our refs Leroy, Max Jones and Lauren Dowler, now ascore was on the board. Our MC for the day - BDS Co-Owner Chris Windle - seduced ourcrowd of around 70 odd, announcinge names and lifts Theaudience, who were new to the sport of powerlifting, wentnuts. They cheered on not just their own friends, but everyonecompeting. The day went at a good pace, with our crew of athletesgetting through each lift with excitement, and our help crewmoving each implement on and off the platform at speed,there really was no real downtime.
2022THE STRONGESTGYM IN THE HUNTER
In the end the men's overall was close between Hunter StrengthSingleton lifter James Payne, and Worm Gym lifter Corey Hall,until JP came out with a huge - and easy - 272.5kg/600.7lbfinal deadlift, giving him the win with a 702.5/1548.7 total!A friendly new face of Dee Curry - coming over to the darksideto try her hand at powerlifting from her crossfit roots - tookout the women's division with a massive first showing of315kg/694.4lb at only 65.4kg/144lbs!Hunter Strength Singleton sponsored athlete, 21 year old EthanBailey - coached by Rob Allen - put some impressive numbers(215,132.5,240) on the board after training powerlifting for only3 months! Keep an eye on this kid!Our overall winners took home their medallions with asupplement prize pack from East Coast Supplements and afresh set of knee wraps from Barbell Death Squad.Thank you also to all who showed up on the day to supporttheir family and friends.Also a huge thank you to everyone who stayed behind to putthe gym back together!We have an exciting event planned for 2023, which will beannounced by the end of the year.See you at the next BDS Origins!
