Bougainvillea truly is a village community, sharing bonds of friendship and respect. Our residents over the years have been a diverse group from war veterans of every rank, to some of our younger working residents of today. We have musicians and artists and many north shore hospital volunteers. All resident, past and present are very proud of the village and the lifestyle it affords. Village residents and staff are interested to hear about each other’s lives. Very warm connections between residents and staff have always been a feature. The Bougainvillea staff calibre is outstanding and they come from very diverse backgrounds and nationalities. In turn we feel very privileged to know and share in our residents and staff families. Since 1988 the Village has been managed by a family. Choosing STRATA TITLE for Bougainvillea created a Title Deed to each residents’ home, which traditionally has always felt secure. From day one through to today, Bougainvillea has always been the kind of home each resident chooses. They must be allowed to enjoy the privacy and respect of their own front door to their home. Our presence is always discretely there, when they need us, 24/7. Residents can choose to join in everything happening, or nothing at all. Some in between. So much so that a large percentage of residents after being with us for quite a short period tell us that they wish they made the decision to move earlier. Government initiatives to keep people in their own homes longer are commendable, BUT sadly, mobility ramps, meals on wheels, and daily help doesn’t always address the main problem so many face and tell us about, the feelings of loneliness and isolation. We hear of people who were living in high rise buildings, and never knew their neighbours, or spoke to anyone for days on end. SHARING a meal is so important and so much nicer than having a meal delivered. At Bougainvillea there is always something on, someone to chat to, or share a cup of coffee or a meal with. A shared bottle of wine with dinner is a wonderful norm in our dining room. Bougainvillea is comprised of 138 Strata self-contained units spanning 49 oor plan designs. 37 are fully serviced, 101 are independent or exi care living, meaning you can opt in and out of all the services on offer. These services include meals, cleaning, laundry, weekly breakfast supplies through to individual personal care attendance (assistance in medication and showering) when available, all on a user pays basis. We know that at some time, we all nd we are in need of a little help in the domestics of life and Bougainvillea has been thoughtfully planned to cater for these needs and is fully accredited to do so. Residents are welcome to still use their own service providers.

Our location is unbeatable! We have public transport on our doorstep. There are cafes and restaurants galore, clothes shops, hairdressers, audiologists, dentists and of course Woolies and Pharmacies, who will also deliver. In our complex we have a podiatrist, orist, dress maker, hairdresser and nail salon. Our gardens extend all through the village and are a constant joy for our residents to live amongst and for visitors to enjoy. Our tradition of having the most marvellous staff and management continues. We are so thankful to them for the caring security they provide our residents and each other and they count as our greatest asset. We have many visiting retailers, fashion apparel, shoes, jewellery, gifts and cards, handbags, toiletries as well as homemade jams and treats. We have a swimming pool and separate spa, both heated 365 days a year. A physio comes onsite to offer aqua aerobics classes, also exercise classes and we also have a yoga instructor offering yoga classes weekly.Even without all these inclusions, where in Neutral Bay can you nd self-contained Strata units from $300,000 to $830,000. Our decor is pleasing, chic but relaxing and informal. You can enjoy the lounge and dining room with baby grand piano, the library, card room, arts and crafts, BBQ area and of course the gym. There is also a variety of social events with opportunities to make new friends or forge old ones. From the Archibald to the Bowral Tulip festival travelling on our own bus. We invite visiting guest speakers, musicians and host monthly birthday celebrations as well hosting events from Anzac Day, St Patrick’s Day, New Year and Christmas etc. Bougainvillea is a Strata Titled Village which is also governed by the Retirement Villages Act. What this means for us is that the Management Company can make no prot from the Resident’s Annual Budget. Bougainvillea in fact runs a business totally for the residents benet within the Management business. How you ask? All prots made from the dining room, bus outings, laundry services, independent unit cleaning and meal deliveries are paid into the Residents Budget Fund. How then, you may well ask are we reimbursed for providing services to the village and Residents? We agree with each new purchaser that when they live in the village be it one year, or however many, (23 has been the maximum to date) we will receive no payment from them until such time their unit is resold, whenever that might be. The amount payable is calculated on a contracted scale basis.IMPORTANTLY - Our Management Company has chosen, (not by any legal requirement as 1 of only 3 villages we know of in Australia) to contribute 17.5% of this income to the Capital Works Fund of the Strata Plan, which results in lower levies payable by resident owners. A fact of which we are very proud. You can ask for a Brochure and a copy of the DVD made by our residents. We would love to welcome you and show you over the village personally.

Sleepless and sore Sleepless and sore in Salvadorin SalvadorTravellers can now go to many exciting places providing memories which we can treasure for years to come. However some of these plac-es provide standards of medical and dental care which may be of con-cern. While away many prefer to de-lay treatment until they return home to their trusted doctor or dentist. Trying to speak a foreign language can be fun but not when you are in pain trying to access medical or dental care. Some travellers now pack additional medi-cation, spare glasses and prescription just in case while away from home. Currently avail-able medical/travel kits can deal with a range of medical problems but lack any effective means of dealing with dental problems (apart from readily available pain-killers). Occasional toothache due to a lost lling or broken lling may initially cause only minor in-convenience. Without prompt dental attention this pain will become more severe causing problems throughout the day such as eating and at night disturbing sleep. Could you imagine trying to nd a dentist, away from home, minimal or no free time and unable to speak the language? Blutack and chewing gum don’t work so how long can you survive on pain-killers? Regular dental care and a routine dental visit with your dentist before you travel is good advice when travelling locally or overseas. However dental problems may occur and are often unexpected despite regular dental visits. Dental problems are unlikely to be fatal but for those affected it can be irritating, extremely distressing or profoundly debilitating. Be careful when buying painkillers bought over-the-counter for relief from toothache as some should not be taken with some prescribed medicines - this combination can cause major medical problems. Some “stronger” pain-killers can also cause drowsiness and dizziness. Unexpected effects can involve any medication purchased be over-the-count-er, “alternative” or even with a prescribed medicine.Don’t rely on pain-killers. Minimise unexpect-ed problems by regular dental care and make sure you have Dentist In A Box® the “no mess / no fuss” kit for common dental problems. About the size of a CD case Dentist In A Box®. kits easily t into the glove-box, hiking day-pack or hand bag. Originally, you could only buy mobility scooters of the 3-wheel variety. While they were mostly compact, light and manoeuvrable in tight spaces, their aw was they were dangerously unstable, putting users at risk of and often inicting serious injury due to tipping as soon as they were used on un even surfacescannot do.All this while maintaining agility that is comparable to many three wheel scooters, with a turning circle of as little as just 107cm. With the addition of Quintell™ Kerbmaster Powered Anti-Grounding and Anti-Tipping we believe we offer a range of the very safest scooters on the market today. Thanks to their 5-wheel design all Quingo’s benet from a staggering 80% more foot area than a comparable length four wheel vehicle and ergonomic posture control and Quintell™ adaptive footplates this combines to bring The solution was of course to build scooters with 4 wheels and, while this addressed the stability issues experienced with 3 wheeled scooters, it created a new set of problems. By adding the extra wheel, the leg space available was severely restricted leading to poor posture and therefore discomfort on even relatively short journeys. Scooters became larger and more cumbersome. Turning circles expanded and poor weight distribution resulted in restricted manoeuvrability and a new source of instability.Engineers and manufactures simply accepted these problems and you, the users would have to choose what was more important, agility or stability and safety. However, the manufactures of Quingo; Advanced Vehicle Concepts (AVC) came up with an innovative solution in the world’s rst true 5-wheel scooters featuring Quintell™ technologies. The 5 wheel concept brings genuine stability and safety benets with Quingo scooters being able to mount kerbs at anything up to a 45° angle, something other scooters just Quingo 5 Wheel Quingo 5 Wheel Scooters – Mobility Scooters – Mobility Scooter Evolution Scooter Evolution 4 Wheeled Scooter Forcing a Poor Posture for Legs4 Wheeled Scooter Forcing a Poor Posture for Legs Hips & SpineQuingo Providesm the IdealAnatomical Driving Position18Retirement AustraliaRetirement AustraliaHEALTH CARE & MOBILITY EQUIPMENT

There are two models – Deluxe and Classic and each are available in two sizes – 8 lines and 10 lines. The large1.75m, 10 line holds 4 kings sheets, with 2 lines spare, and the 1.50m, 8 line dries 4 queen sheets. Also large items of washing, e.g. woollen underblankets, quilts, quilt covers, blankets and sheets can be “tented” over the top to dry and with the air circulation underneath, they will dry in no time. Jumpers can be laid across the top of the lines. Being portable they can be placed anywhere for eective drying and for those with mobility problems, the Handy Lines can be placed put near the house so washing doesn’t have to be carried very far. Also, some people leave them up inside a spare room and, of course, in winter, household heating can be utilized because there is absolutely no need to use an electric dryer. Washing can be aired as well as dried on a Handy Line, so there is no double handling and there is no going home to wet washing if the lines are undercover or inside. Many people in wheelchairs are able to reach the one with 8 lines which gives them some independence and is so important for their wellbeing.Constructed of powder-coated aluminium, the Handy Lines are lightweight, but ultra-strong and have the advantage of folding at for storage, although we do recommend that anyone with a mobility problem, leave them unfolded. It is an easy process to unfold them, but for those with severe health problems, it could be more dicult. Also we do recommend the 8 line Classic model for those with injuries because they are a little lighter in weight and easier to move.We displayed our products at the Occupational Therapy Seminar in June and the Physiotherapy Seminar in October where we had so many enquiries from health workers about our products, and over the years have had many orders from them on behalf of their patients.Mrs Pegg’s Products Pty Ltd is an accredited distributor of the Handy Lines through Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Doctors and the Veteran Aairs Department through the RAP Programme.23YearsCELEBRATING1995 – 2018Retirement Living Aus Double Page.indd 1 18/09/2018 9:32 PM

Page 25

A steel mind dulled of life’s memoriesBrad McDonald enjoyed a career in the steel industry spanning 37 years, starting on the factory floor as a teenager and working his way up to OperationsManager. His career was full of responsibilities and success, and provided the financial support for his family - his wife, Jo, who also worked for Union Steel, and their two sons Lachlan and Matthew.Yet a series of events over four years, following Brad’s redundancy, turned the close-knit family upside down.At the age of 58, Brad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease – the most common type of dementia in younger people. “Brad’s job was really familiar to him, so after his redundancy four years earlier, this is when things started to become a bit dicult,” Jo, 47 says. “We just noticed little things happening. He had lost his get up and go, and one day Brad just broke down.”Younger onset dementia, the term for dementia diagnosed in people under the age of 65, is similar to dementia in older people. In both younger onset and older age, dementia is an illness that causes a progressive decline in mental function with symptoms such as loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and normal emotionalreactions.Conditions such as vitamin and hormone deficiencies as well as depression, infections and even medication can produce symptoms that are similar to dementia. As a result, early diagnosis in younger people is often more dicult, but socritical. For Brad, his diagnosis of younger onset dementia was a journey over several years, originally misdiagnosed asdepression. “After his redundancy Brad was successful in securing another Operations Manager position in the steel industry, and despite the familiarity of the work he was Younger onset dementia affects around Younger onset dementia affects around 26,000 Australians. The rst symptoms are 26,000 Australians. unable to make the probation period,” Jo says.A series of further events, including a loss of vision while driving, and a deterioration in Brad’s understanding and processing, saw Jo question if there was a bigger issue. The McDonalds were referred to a neurologist. No more than 30 minutes after they had arrived a series of short cognitive tests pinpointed Brad’s condition – Alzheimer’s disease.“I was shocked at what Brad couldn’t do in the tests. He couldn’t put the numbers on the clock face and couldn’t recall things,” Jo says. “I walked out completely shocked and not knowing what to do. All I had was a phone number of Alzheimer’s Australia.”For the McDonald’s, they quickly realised there was little awareness of the disease.“We’ve changed Brad’s GP to someone who has the time to listen and understand, and reached out to a geriatrician who has connected us to the Memory Clinic at Prince Charles Hospital and to a number of support groups for younger onset dementia,” Jo says.“While we’ve had some great support, we’ve also hit walls. For example, when Brad collapsed from medication side eects and was in Coronary Care the medical team essentially walked away and discharged Brad when they learned of his disease.”Striking Brad at such a young age has significantly impacted the whole family with the loss of his income and driver’s licence. “With Brad not driving it was just really dicult for him to continue working. Logistically, because Iwas working full-time, I wasn’t able to get him to and from work, so we made the decision for him to stop working and beathome,”Jo says.“Obviously that had a financial impact. We had to adjust our living standards. We had debt that we had to pay so we had tosell our house, and live o what Iearn.”For the boys, they reflect on the impact and change. “I miss the ‘old Dad’. He was always caring, and still is. I just see other fathers, and I can’t imagine Dad being like that, taking up that normal father role,” saysLachlan,17. “You can’t anticipate anything, it’s an emotional rollercoaster, and you just need to be open to anything. Just take each dayasitcomes.”His brother Matthew, 18 says: “Everything’s dierent now, you keep going day-by-day. It’s been so long now, Dad’s dementia is almost normal, but compared to what he was to now, it’s two totally dierent people. These days it’s tough, you can’t have a conversation with him.”Today Jo resumes full responsibility of raising their family, managing financial responsibilities, and caring forBrad. “Brad was home alone three days a week. I’d call him constantly through the day. One day I couldn’t get hold of him and that was a bit scary,” she says.Matt shares: “There was that time Dad went to the bottle-o. He couldn’t find his way home. He just sat on the kerb and started drinking. I came past, found him and brought him home.”As Brad’s condition progresses and he is more dependent on care, Jo takes on more responsibility while ensuring everyone in the family has their own lives and independence. “I found I was relying on the kids. They’d be home from school or work and I’d be asking them to just stay there until I got home “I was shocked at what Brad couldn’t do in the tests. He couldn’t put the numbers on the clock face and couldn’t recall things. Iwalked out of the neurologist appointment completely shocked and not knowing what to do.”24Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia AGED CARE

the Remember Me - Younger Onset Dementia Social Group which brings people together for programs and activities around Brisbane including a dedicated session at GOMA.“It is extremely important for us as a family, and is our aim, to have Brad at home with us for as long as possible. Family was everything, that was all he ever wanted. With our newly formed relationship with Carinity and Wendy this goal is now an achievable goal,” Jo says.Jo, Matthew and Lachlan are planning their annual holiday with Brad at Caloundra – the familiarity the McDonald family can once again bask in. “Dad’s always happy there, we’ve always had good memories up there. It makes you just feel so happy seeing and knowing Dad’s in a good space, and making the most of life. You can just see the old Dad. It’s just awesome tosee,” Lachlan says. from work. They’re kids, they need to have their own lives,” says Jo.“Plus, it’s important for Brad to have his independence, for him to feel good about himself. His speech is hard now and at the point where he forgets words butwe work through it.”Earlier this year, on advice from their geriatrician to look for daytime care for Brad, with support of Dementia Australia (formerly Alzheimer’s Australia), they were successful in their application for NDIS funding for dedicated carers to support Brad. This funding now provides the family with the peace of mind knowing Brad is safe. Finding the right carer for Brad has been critical, identifying that with the progression of Brad’s Alzheimer’s, he requires the same carer and familiar face each day. Wendy, one of the Carinity Home Care Lifestyle Carers, is Brad’s dedicated daytime carer at the McDonald’s home four daysaweek. “I don’t just care and support Brad - I support the whole family such as preparing meals, helping with the groceries and cleaning,” Wendy says.Reflecting on caring for someone with dementia, Wendy says: “Each day is dierent with Brad. I have to pick-up on his energy and get a feel for what’s going on in his head. “Not knowing Brad before his diagnosis can be hard at times, not knowing what he was like, what motivated him, the way he thinks. So I really have to read his body language all the time. My goal each day is to support himemotionally.”Keeping Brad physically and mentally active is a focus for Wendy, tapping in to his senses and memories including listening to his favourite rock music and trips to the ocean where he “just lights up”. Brad has joined Opposite Brad and Jo McDonald and their two boys, Matthew (centre) and Lachlan (right). When a loved one is affected by illness, it can dramatically affect a family’s life forever – especially if that person now requires care. In most cases, this responsibility would fall to the immediate family, however it is important to know that there is help available in the form of a Home Care Package. A Home Care Package is a coordinated plan of services that help you live independently for as long as you can. There are four levels of support available ranked from basic care needs to high-level care needs. Depending on your care requirements, an aged care assessor will determine the best level package to meet your needs. You then choose a service provider which will tailor a package of services for you. In the case of Milton Renham, having a Home Care Package improved his quality of life and allowed him to receive high-level support in his own home.Husband and wife, Milton and Dilys Renham, were living happily on the Central Coast of New South Wales when Milton’s health suddenly deteriorated, requiring high-level care. Unfortunately, Dilys did not have the skills required to give her husband the best quality of care.Luckily, Milton had a Home Care Package, which allowed him to receive the support he required. Already receiving a Level 2 Home Care Package, Milton was reassessed and was upgraded to a Level 4 package – the highest level of government funding available. Having a Home Care Package changed Milton’s life as he was able to maintain his independence whilst receiving support in his own home. His funding allowed him to utilise an array of services from personal care, nursing, domestic assistance, home maintenance, escorts to-and-from the local shopping centre, medical appointments, and social outings to even walking their beloved pet dog, Klyte. When a family member becomes unwell and requires care, we often forget the impact this has on their immediate family, especially the partners and siblings of high care need clients. They lose their independence because they need to support their partner on a full-time basis. Having a Home Care Package not only changed Milton’s life, but also the life of his wife, Dilys.Having a strong affiliation to the art world, Dilys is a gallery tour guide who has shared her extensive knowledge of art practitioners and their work to audiences globally for years. You will often find her spending her weekends down at the Art Gallery of New South Wales directing tours of the latest exhibits on show. With Milton on a Home Care Package, this eased the burden and stress on Dilys and allowed her to maintain her independence and keep her career, reassured that her husband was being cared for – without the worry. A Home Care Package will not only change your life, but also the lives of those around you. Whether you are currently living in your own home, in a retirement village, or residing in an independent living unit, a Home Care Package will support you to live independently for as long as you can.Choosing the right care provider is crucial to maximising your Home Care Package and tailoring a plan of services to meet your care needs. The East Kimberley is a diverse area of Western Australia more than twice the size of Victoria. The region is some of the oldest country in the world and indigenous peoples arrived around 41,000 years ago. The East Kimberley is bordered to the south by the red sand dunes of the Great Sandy Desert, to the east by the Northern Territory and to the north west by the Kimberley Plateau and the Timor Sea.Kununurra is the Gateway to the East Kimberley and is the largest town in Western Australia north of Broome, with a stable population of over 5000. However with residents on outlying farms, itinerant workers and tourists the population can double. The lovely town of Kununurra is quite young, as it was established in 1961 by the Western Australian and Federal Governments, as the main administrative and support centre for the developing Ord River Irrigation scheme (ORI). It has an abundance of water due to the creation of beautiful lake Argyle and the Ord Diversion Dam. Today the town is your perfect base from which to explore the many amazing adventures, unforgettable experiences and breathtakingly beautiful sights of the East Kimberley.Sydney and two-thirds the price of Canberra. The area was settled by the Pioneering Durack family in1882. Patrick Durack immigrated from Ireland to Queensland and in 1879 he and his Brother Michael set out on a two and a half year cattle drive, overlanding 7250 head of cattle and 200 horses from Cooper Creek in Western Queensland to the Ord Valley in the East Kimberley. The 4,700 kilometre journey is the longest of its type ever recorded.KununurraKununurra- Oasis of the Kimberley- Oasis of the Kimberley36Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia HOLIDAYS & TRAVEL

The Durack’s established Argyle Downs and Ivanhoe station and created a family dynasty in the region. They exported cattle through the Port of Wyndham to markets as far away as Africa and North America. Wyndham is only 100 kilometres north of Kununurra and was established by John Forrest in 1886 as the main trading station for the East Kimberley, after nds of Gold in Halls Creek the previous year. Thousands of miners disembarked from the ships at Cambridge Gulf heading for the goldelds. During the second world war the frontier town was attacked by Japanese aircraft as was Exmouth on the coast further south. From nearby Five Rivers Lookout visitors can enjoy spectacular views over the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack and Pentacost Rivers where they join and enter the Cambridge Gulf.Another short drive from Kununurra through the Carr Boyd Ranges takes you up to the relocated, now famous Durack Homestead. The Homestead was constructed at Argyle Downs in the Ord Valley in 1895 and became a popular place to socialise in the East Kimberley. The homestead was made of crushed termite mounds and limestone blocks. In the 1970’s the Ord River was ooded to create beautiful lake Argyle, Australia’s second largest reservoir with a surface area of 700 square kilometres.Be sure to call at the Durack / Argyle homestead which was dismantled block by block and reassembled on high ground near Lake Argyle and is now the Argyle Museum. You can also board a fascinating cruise from below the massive wall of Lake Argyle taking you fty ve kilometres downstream on the Ord River to Lake Kununurra. Only a few kilometres out of Kununurra is Mirima National Park also known as the Hidden Valley. The sandstone formations here resemble the domes of the famous Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park) which is why they are often referred to as the mini Bungle Bungles. The actual Purnululu National park and the Majestic Domes known as the Bungle Bungles can be easily accessed via a sightseeing, xed wing or helicopter scenic ight from Kununurra airport. One can enjoy views over the pack saddle irrigation area, Kununurra, Lake Argyle and the ancient geological wonders of the National Park and the Bungle Bungles.Travelling across the rich, fertile black soil plain known as “Kununurra Clay” you will be surrounded by irrigation crops which include mango, citrus, watermelon, rockmelon, pumpkin, chickpea, chia and sandalwood. Learn all about the worlds most prized fragrant timber with a visit to the Sandalwood Museum.Another natural attraction in the area is the abundance of birdlife. Get on board the unique sunset Wetlands Cruise where you are likely to see Osprey, Brolgas, Cormorants, Ibis, Egrets, Corellas, Herons, Whistling Ducks, Magpie Geese , Sea Eagles, Darters and more. Ad an amazing sunset, some nibbles and a glass of Sparkling wine, and you have the perfect end to another magical East Kimberley day.The Argyle diamond mine near Kununurra is the world’s largest producer of diamonds and produces 20 million carats of diamonds annually. It’s the world’s largest producer of cognac and natural champagne diamonds and famous for precious, rare and valuable pink diamonds. Don’t miss a tour of this amazing facility with a chance purchase your dream sparkly jewel. The best time to visit the East Kimberley is in the middle of the year when the days are cooler and the humidity is low. Getting there is now easier than ever before, on the Kununurra Express! Virgin Airlines now has a limited number of direct ights from Melbourne to Kununurra and return for 2020. Two’s a Crowd was founded by Ken Morgan in 2012 and has developed a strong following. “We’ve welcomed nearly 5000 clients “on-board” since inception. Recently one client completed his ninth tour with us. Our exclusive river cruise charters have been very popular, and our clients love the fact that its only our solos on board – no couples and no tables for one! So many friendships are made on our tours. We love that.”Two’s a Crowd tours operate to all corners of the world. Vietnam is one of their most popular tours and a favourite for those starting their solo travel adventures. Russia, Egypt and South Africa are also in demand. According to Ken Morgan, 2020 bookings are already strong. “Our 2019 tours were fully sold and 2020 is shaping up to be another busy one for us” he said. “We always encourage clients to book early and avoid disappointment.”Customer service is a key priority for Two’s a Crowd too. Many clients can be anxious about travelling, so Ken and the team in Melbourne are ready to answer any questions prospective travellers may have. “Booking travel can be daunting so we aim to make it easy. We can take care of booking airfares and even pre or post tour accommodation. We’re a one stop shop really. Even travel insurance is included on most tours.”Sounds like solo travellers will be well looked after at Two’s a Crowd.Contact details: Phone 1300 55 45 01 or visit www.twosacrowd.com.auFor many Australians who live alone, travel dreams can take a back seat if you don’t have someone to go with. But that’s where solo travel company Two’s a Crowd comes in. They develop small group tours and even charter whole river cruise ships just for solo travellers. Tours are fully guided and escorted by a Two’s a Crowd Tour Host from Australia. And clients have their own room or cabin – no sharing. So, while you’re seeing the world with new friends, you still have your own space to relax after a busy day.WANT TO SEE THE WORLD BUT DON’T HAVE A TRAVEL BUDDY? River cruising especially through Europe has been popular with couples and families for many years. But for solo travellers’ high single supplements and feeling like a fth wheel on a cruise full of couples have been big barriers. Two’s a Crowd decided to do something about it and in 2017 operated the world’s rst solos only river cruise from Vienna to Strasbourg.Eighty solos from all over Australia and New Zealand (everyone had their own cabin of course) shared 14 days exploring wonderful sights, eating fantastic food and drinking some very nice wines. Not to mention meeting new friends. Since that rst charter, Two’s a Crowd again operated river cruises in 2018 and 2019. According to Two’s a Crowd MD Ken Morgan the cruises are very popular. “The river cruise charters always sell out quickly and the feedback is fantastic. We partner with Amadeus River cruises who operate a wonderful eet of 5-star vessels. We include all shore excursions, meals, drinks with lunch and dinner and WIFI. Our clients love that.”With Two’s a Crowd river cruises, solo travellers can now discover the benets of travelling by river. You unpack once and your hotel goes with you. Most travel is overnight, so you wake up in a new place after a good night’s sleep...no long bus rides. All meals and drinks with lunch and dinner are included so your credit card takes a rest as well. You can also do as much or as little as you want. While daily shore excursions are included, they are not mandatory. It’s your holiday and your decision. Want to stay on board for the day and relax? Go for it! Finally, river cruises are great value as they include pretty much everything at a fantastic price. Two’s a Crowd continues to operate the world’s only solos river cruise with 2020 already selling fast. This year they’re cruising the Danube, Main and Rhine from Budapest to Amsterdam in August 2020 on board the 5-star, 2018-built Amadeus Queen. It promises to sell out fast especially with prices starting from a low $7990 plus air. The cruise includes all meals, shore excursions, drinks with lunch and dinner and free WIFI.Contact details: Phone 1300 55 45 01 or visit www.twosacrowd.com.auSOLO’S RIVER CRUISING - A WORLD FIRST SECTION39

For many aspiring solo travellers, the thought of stepping out into a new world of discovery can be daunting. But one destination is proving a perfect starting point for intrepid rst timers…Vietnam. And for several great reasons.Firstly, it close to home. In fact, with a ying time of just over 8 hours you can be in another world in next to no time. Secondly, it is literally another world. Solo travel specialist Two’s a Crowd operates around forty tours a year and every departure is escorted by a Tour Host. Cruise charters have two hosts. But what does a Tour Host do? We check in with hosts, Elise and Diane to nd out what it’s all about.“Our role has many facets,” according to Diane who has been a Two’s a Crowd Tour Host for three years. “I am with the group to make sure the day to day operation of the tour runs smoothly. I work closely with the local guide and operator to iron out any little wrinkles which may occur along the way. But I’m also a social director. I make sure that everyone feels included with the group and enjoys the tour.”HOSTING A SOLOS TOUR SOUNDS LIKE ALL FUN BUT IT’S A SERIOUS BUSINESS.Elise who has also been hosting for three years agrees. “Making sure that everyone has a great time is so important. Some clients are quieter or more reserved and I make sure they are never at a loose end when, for example, we have free time.”Tour hosts are always planning for those free nights and will have a local restaurant or market in mind for those who want to tag along for a feed and a wander after a busy day of exploring.Elise summed it up. “It’s about giving our clients options when there is free time. But also making sure that anything that is worrying them can be quickly dealt with. We’re here for our clients. When they smile, we’re happy.” Call them on 1300 55 45 01 to nd out more or visit www.twosacrowd.com.auRetirement AustraliaRetirement Australia41 HOLIDAYS & TRAVEL41Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia

The Salvation Army is an international move-ment, working in more than 125 countries. It has been serving the Australian community for 139 years, engaging with every demo-graphic and every age group. From big cities to country towns and isolated homesteads, The Salvation Army gives hope where it’s needed most to over 152,000 people every yearA recent review of Salvation Army clients found more than 60 percent of people who ac-cess the Salvos’ Moneycare nancial counselling service are women (2). Moneycare provides information and support to help individuals, couples and fami-lies through a range of nancial situations. This includes helping write a budget and repayment plans, and assisting with debt collectors. In the past 12 months, Moneycare supported more than 18,000 people with nancial counselling (2).These services are a lifeline of hope to people like Elizabeth. Divorced with adult children, Elizabeth was grieving the loss of both parents, living with her sister in a new town, battling health issues and had piling bills.Eventually, Elizabeth took the advice of her counsellor and contacted The Salvation Army’s Moneycare service. “A weight lifted off my shoulders…”she says. “We got all my nances worked out.”With her life back on track, Elizabeth began to volunteer with her local Salvos and Money-care service. Thanks to The Salvation Army, Elizabeth says, “I have a life now!”Every day, The Salvation Army Moneycare supports people who are facing nancial trouble due to problems managing debt, budgeting issues and health problems. More than one quarter of the clients who recently accessed Moneycare’s services were over 55 years of age (2). “Older women have become the unexpected face of poverty in Australia,” says Salvation Army Ofcer Major Paul Moulds. “Their life as a primary carer, in the majority of cases, sets back their superannuation and employment options later in life. The Salvation Army is committed to coming alongside Australians in need to love, serve, give hope and transform their lives. This life-changing work is only possible through a solid network of partnerships with the wider community, bequestors, philanthropists and , corporate businesses. These ever-growing relationships allow for an increased impact of The Salvation Army on the lives of Australians in crisis. Together, with the Australian commu-nity, The Salvation Army can give hope where it’s needed most.1 The Salvation Army Australia, Service and Mission Informa-tion System, July 2017 – June 2018.2 One Step At A Time — Five Year Financial Counselling Analysis, The Salvation Army Australia. 2019 Australia Cancer Research Foundation Grants Announced. It’s because of the generosity of people like you that Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) is able to provide funding to these projects. Announced at the end of 2019, we have two visionary world-leading projects to share. ACRF, with guidance and direction from our Medical Research Advisory Committee, seek out the boldest and most innovative cancer research projects to back each year. Australia is constantly punching above its weight in the area of cancer research and these two projects are further proof of that:The ACRF Child Cancer Liquid Biopsy Program, Children’s Cancer Institute (NSW)The current precision medicine treatment recommendations for children are based on an invasive and often painful procedure - tissue biopsy.Whilst we know cancer cells are constantly evolving and changing, repeated biopsies are usually not feasible or ethical thus limiting the ability to safely monitor disease progression. The $3.5 million grant will fund next-generation sequencing technology to develop highly sensitive and minimally-invasive tests for children with cancer, using blood and body fluid samples. The program aims to improve diagnosis, predict relapse earlier, monitor treatment response and enhance delivery of the right treatment to the right child at the right time. Children’s Cancer Institute’s Executive Director, Professor Michelle Haber AM says, “While the advent of personalised therapies is heralding a new era in childhood cancer treatment, the full potential of this approach is limited by remaining challenges in the ability to safely and sensitively monitor disease progression, clonal evolution, tumour Bright Mind Extrordinary People“I didn’t have any side effects with the SABR technique and I had just three treatments “48Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia WILLS, BEQUESTS & FOUNDATIONS

Page 51

heterogeneity, development of resistance and critically, the emergence of new therapeutic vulnerabilities.”“This significant investment from ACRF to fund the ACRF Liquid Biopsy Program will ultimately enable this capability, such that all high-risk paediatric cancer patients throughout the country will be able to have their therapy optimised by genomic profiling both at the time of initial biopsy, and throughout their cancer journey; providing a clear path to improved patient outcome in the foreseeable future.”ACRF Program for Resolving Cancer Complexity and Therapeutic Resistance, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.Using cutting-edge technologies this program will study individual cancers and the environment they interact with, at a single cell level. The $3.5 million ACRF funding will enable a major program of research, focused on the analysis of single cells taken from patient tumours and models for a range of cancers. This research will discover the triggers that drive cancer development, how genetic diversity in cancers affects treatment efficacy, and develop better ways of personalising cancer therapies to conquer the challenges in predicting and improving patients’ treatment response and overcoming drug resistance. “The complexity and diversity of cancers at a single cell level, and the cells that make up the tumour microenvironment, is poorly understood, and in many cases, it is difficult to predict how a patient will respond to therapy,” Chief Investigator, Professor Clare Scott said.“This important investment from the ACRF will enable us to gain a deeper understanding of how cancers develop at a single cell level, leading to breakthroughs in how we personalise cancer therapy that will have a real impact for patients in the future, improving treatment response and overcoming treatment resistance.”We hope to see both projects producing findings that will support and improve the outcome of each individual diagnosed with this devasting disease. We are delighted to direct our donors’ funds to initiate these two remarkable cancer research programs. Both are underpinned by compelling science and executed by world-class researchers. We’ve come so far, but we can’t stop now. Lung cancer is the fth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and, unfortunately, is the highest cause of cancer related deaths nationally. However, research that is working to outsmart cancer has progressed treatment of inoperable lung cancer and has increased survival rates for patients.A clinical trial by TROG Cancer Research and the Australasian Lung Cancer Trials Group has shown for the rst time that a new radiation therapy technique produced greater survival rates in early stage inoperable lung cancer patients, compared to conventional radiation treatment. The new treatment technology (Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy – SABR) is a highly-targeted technique that delivers high radiation therapy doses targeted at a patient’s tumour. The high dose means that patients can complete their treatment sooner than conventional radiation treatment, with fewer trips to the hospital.101 patients with inoperable early-stage non-small cell lung cancer from across Australia and New Zealand participated in the trial, including Maureen. Maureen had already received traditional radiation therapy as a treatment earlier in her cancer journey and found the new technology preferable to traditional methods.“I didn’t have any side effects with the SABR technique and I had just three treatments, which was much better than the six weeks of radiation treatment I had to treat another lung tumour. With the traditional treatment I felt much more tired and had some burning to my chest and back,” Maureen said.Professor David Ball, who headed the trial, said the results were a breakthrough for treatment worldwide.“Our trial found that for patients with early-stage lung cancer, SABR was more effective in controlling cancer growth resulting in longer life expectancy, and is just as safe as traditional radiation therapy. We found that 89 per cent of cancers were controlled two years after SABR treatment and this compared to 65 per cent for conventional radiation therapy, and there was also a clear benet in overall survival,” David said. After two years, 77 per cent of the patients who received SABR treatment were surviving compared to 59 per cent of those who received conventional radiotherapy.“The cancer treatment that saved my life was developed through a clinical trial”What would you say to someone who participated in research that saved your life from lung cancer? Who helped reduce the side effects that came with your treatment and gave you more treatment options? For 30 years, TROG Cancer Research has been conducting clinical trials research that has improved the outcomes and quality of life for patients of all cancers through one treatment – radiation therapy. Thanks to the participation of the community in life-changing and life-saving research, cancer patients around the world have beneted from groundbreaking improvements in cancer-specic treatments. Many people participate in clinical trials because they can access treatment that isn’t widely available yet, they receive excellent care and support from a team of health professionals, and they contribute to new and better ways to treat and improve quality of life for patients today, as well as for future generations.Cancer treatment breakthrough for inoperable lung cancerHelp TROG Cancer Research outsmart cancer by joining a clinical trial or donating to research that could save the life of a grandchild, friend, colleague or many others worldwide for generations to come.

55I am writing to express my sincerest gratitude for the most generous gift of our family holiday for the third anniversary of our precious son gaining his angels wings. We were very humbled that you thought to offer this holiday to us and were blown away by your generosity from the ights and accom-modation to the dolphin watching cruise and food vouchers. The Retreat is an incredible facility for families to escape treatment or grief, everything has been thought of. We did not feel that we were in sterile holiday accommodation but rather in a beautiful house with all the comforts of home. We appreciated every little detail. The beach towels, step stools for the children, cot, change table, books, games, shing gear, beach equipment, movies, pantry items, kids’ cutlery and so much more. Each day I noticed something new that contributed to us having a complete, relaxing break from reality. We truly feel that we escaped. You gave us permission to get on a plane and run away from work, home, responsibilities and people and I’m not sure even we realised just how much we needed to do that. I am quite a highly-strung person and I have not felt that relaxed in a very long time. We were given time to spend together as a family without the day to day stresses. We were able to stop, reect and remember our darling boy and were sur-rounded by signs that he was there with us. He was in every sunrise and sunset, in the rain, wind and rainbows. He was so close to us every moment and to be honest, I didn’t want to leave. I have left a big part of my heart in that home and we know that it will become a special holiday destination for our little family in the future. You handed us a gift that we could never have afforded ourselves at this point in time and we are so very grateful. I cannot stop thinking about what a wonderful person must have been to have left the house. What a truly amazing gift to leave to families like ours who are facing the hardest challenges that any parent should have to. I hope they are looking down proudly, knowing they are making a huge difference and touching the lives of people who need it most. So, to them, their family, the Trust, yourselves and all who work tirelessly at Camp Quality to give oncology families a reason to smile, thank you. Thank you from the very bottom of our hearts for all you do to make grieving families and families of seriously ill children experience some sunshine and light in their days. The below testimonial is from a family, who stayed in the Retreat, which coincided with the anniversary of their son’s passingCamp Quality is honoured to have been given the opportunity to call this home for our families. If you have questions or would like to request further information, please give our Gifts in Wills Coordinatora call on 02 9876 0546 or email bequests@campquality.org.au

Our retirement years offer the opportunity to try things we have perhaps never had the time to do before, to learn a new language, take-up art, or study history, literature or philosophy. But where to start? It is not easy starting something new at any time, but it is perhaps even more challenging when you are older and less used to stepping out of your comfort zone. As Jill Murray, a researcher at Macquarie university comments “Because we live in a culture where age is frequently constructed in less than optimistic terms, the associated stereotypes can sometimes discourage people from taking the rst step towards what can be an exciting, enriching and even life-changing new area of interest. There are many examples of successful older learners who have found the experience has opened up a whole new world of knowledge, skill, cultural understanding and enjoyment.”WILLS, BEQUESTS & FOUNDATIONS56Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia

Indeed the benets of lifelong learning in our older years are widely recognised; put simply, it is good for our health. Findings from a 2012 UK research project revealed improvements in life satisfaction, reductions in self-reported depression and reduced GP visits amongst those who participated in learning activities. In addition, participation in learning can help reduce cognitive decline, slow the onset of dementia in some people, and overcome loneliness by creating opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. Professor Stephen McNair sums it up when he says : “[Education is] particularly important for those in the latter stages of life when one is less mobile and having to cope with the death of partners and friends: getting out of bed and feeling one has a purpose can be particularly challenging.” So, where to start? There are adult education providers across Australia many of whom offer courses especially tailored to the retirees. In Sydney the WEA offers over 300 courses a term ranging from music, art and languages; to a variety of humanities topics including history, philosophy and politics. The courses range in length from one hour through to ten weeks and many are scheduled in the daytime to suit the preference of retired learners. (They also offer 10% discount for Seniors card holders and being a not-for-prot means their fees are kept low.)One long term student at WEA commented, when asked why she enjoys coming to courses, “I am now over 85 years old and my friends say I act and look like I’m 60 or 70. It’s because I am pumping my brain regularly and learning new things at WEA”.Whilst no one can promised that retuning to learning will knock 20 years off you, what is true is that it is never too late to learn something new, and whatever stage of life you are at your brain health will benet from the exercise of learning. So to, of course, will your social life. You can browse the courses on offer at WEA Sydney via their website https://www.weasydney.com.au/ or order a copy of their termly printed brochure by calling 0192 642 781.To hear more comments from WEA students and tutors on the benets and pleasures of learning in later years visit the WEA’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/weasydney/
