Thepreserve is managed as a bird sanctuary,where regular bird watching andconservation tours are held. This scenedepicts a beautiful heron in flight atsunset as it is Heading Home to Roost. The PointBee Gum Point PreserveSize: 24" x 32"Price: SOLDGiclée: $350 (18" x 24")IRLT purchased Bee Gum Point in2011, which at the time was theorganization's largestconservation property. Along the way, visitorscan catch glimpses of the Lagoonbetween the mangroves fringing theshoreline. Many bird species can befound on this property, including GreatBlue Herons. It is not uncommon to finda few of these beautiful birds perched inthe mangroves when visiting theproperty.Roseate SpoonbillsOyster Bar MarshSize: 20" x 30"Price: $6,000Giclée: $350 (18" x 27")The Oyster Bar Marsh trail wastwenty years in the making and isthe Land Trust’s third public trail.It is the Land Trust’s first publictrail on the barrier island. Themain trail rings a vast mangrovewetland, which is animpoundment designed tocontrol mosquitoes. This wetlandis actively managed as a nurseryfor aquatic and avian species inthe Indian River Lagoon. Offshore, aseagrass bed draws manatees to itsunderwater feast. Theproperty contains majestic oaks, scrubforest, mangrove swamp, and beautifulviews of the Indian River Lagoon. Theone-mile trail starts with an easy walkthrough an open canopy scrub habitatand shaded oak hammock. The trail offers visitors an opportunity toenjoy a peaceful and serene hike, whileenjoying the sights and sounds of nature.3

Thisscene depicts several Majestic Oaks,sabal palms and saw palmettos. Visitorsmight catch glimpses of birds such asospreys, barn owls, red-belliedwoodpeckers, or yellow-crowned night-herons. The property also provideshabitat for critters such as gophertortoises and bats.4During the time period of 2013 to2020, the Land Trust acquired 10parcels of land totaling 300 acresalong the portion of the IndianRiver Lagoon known as TheNarrows. The Land Trust refers tothis track of land as Bridge View,due to the splendid views itprovides of the Barber Bridge. Mangrove forest, high salt marsh,tidal creeks, upland meadows,and forests make up this specialplace which has been protectedin perpetuity. The trail system representsa unique public-private partnershipbetween the Land Trust and Indian RiverCounty. In 2016,the Preserve was expanded to220 acres and currently contains226 acres after additionalacquisitions. The propertyfeatures a variety of habitats,including freshwater wetlands,pine flatwoods, tropical oak-palmhammocks, salt marsh, mangroveforest, and seagrass beds. Thisscene highlights an area of theproperty used as a Butterfly Pathfor a variety of differentbutterflies.Butterfly OrchidsCoastal Oaks PreserveSize: 18" x 36"Price: $6,000Giclée: $350 (15" x 30")The ancient coastal oaks located on theproperty are loaded with other flora,including the Florida Butterfly Orchids.The butterfly orchid (Encyclia tampensis)is native to Florida and is one of theshowiest of the native orchid species. Itbears up to 45 small fragrant flowers thatare typically yellowish or green. Theseflowers typically bloom during thesummer months. This scene showcasesan orchid in full bloom, happily perchedon a large oak branch amongst healthyresurrection fern.

Inpartnership with the Land Trust, the St.Johns River Water Management Districtdeveloped plans to expand historicalwetlands and restore native uplandforest on a former citrus grove as part ofa wetlands mitigation project. Theserestored wetlands are enjoyed by a widevariety of birds. Thesetypes of restoration projects arehelpful in improving andprotecting critical habitats thatare increasingly affected bydevelopment. Pineflatwoods constitute the predominantterrestrial ecosystem in Florida,encompassing roughly half of the state'snatural land area. In our coastal area, thisfire-dependent habitat is becomingincreasingly rare due to its ease ofdevelopment and fire suppressiontactics. His book, Treasured Waters with 78 plates of his original paintings,celebrates the treasured waters of the Indian River Lagoon. The Land Trust Project perfectly aligns with Rick’s passion for preservingthe Lagoon.
