Job, Career, or Calling?
Do you have a job, career, or calling? The difference is important.
Job Orientation: Individuals who fall into this category tend to view their work as a means to an end. They work to receive the pay and/or benefits to support their hobbies, family, or life outside work. They prefer jobs that do not interfere with their personal lives. They are not as likely to have a strong connection to the workplace or their job duties. The job serves as a basic necessity in life. Career Orientation: An individual with a “career” orientation is more likely to focus on elements related to success or prestige. This individual will be interested in the ability to move upward in his or her career, receive raises and new titles, and achieve the social standing which comes from the career. Careers that have a clear upward “ladder” are appealing to those with a career orientation. Calling Orientation: Individuals with a calling orientation often describe their work as integral to their lives and their identity. They view their career as a form of self-expression and personal fulfillment. Individuals with a calling orientation are more likely to find their work meaningful and will modify their duties and develop relationships to make it more so. They are found to be more satisfied in general with their work and their lives. Click here to take the assessment!
What is Inspirational Leadership?
Does it differ from Traditional Leadership? In the past being a good leader was about pushing the business towards its goals, regardless of the impact on the workforce; being ruthless and determined were considered to be traits of good leadership. This has changed over the years, as we now recognize that the real driver behind an organization’s success is its associates and that consequently, in order for leaders to propel their organization to success, they need the buy-in of associates.
It is not a style of leadership. It is about using the right methods at the right time and considering the needs and motivations of those you are leading. It is about finding ways to enhance the potential of those you lead in a way that works for them and inspiring others to push themselves, achieve more and reach that potential.
Who can be an Inspirational Leader?
Anyone has the potential to be an inspirational leader, but it’s certainly not something that will come naturally to everyone. The key to inspirational leadership is awareness – both self-awareness and awareness of those around you. You cannot inspire others unless you first inspire yourself, which means knowing what it is that inspires you and using this as a catalyst to inspire others.Of course, the fundamental purpose of a leader is to lead others, so while self-awareness is essential, you also need to be conscious of what others find inspirational; what is it that motivates your associates?

Committed Associates:When associates see a leader modeling a strong work ethic, they will often aspire to the same level of commitment. Associates enjoy working with people who inspire them, and they may commit to a company largely because of an excellent and inspirational leader.
Meeting Goals:Teams with an inspirational leader may be more likely to meet and exceed their goals! Inspirational leaders align their work with the values of their team, encouraging others to set ambitious goals and accomplish them consistently.
