Luca wrote in his post, "....I have to speak out. Thisconstant violence is getting out of hand....different cultures, races, and ethnicities should FACE-to-FACE with ANTISEMITISMWhen 20 year old Luca Lewis, professional soccerplayer and grandson of inSIGHT member ElaineLewis, was accosted on the street in New YorkCity earlier this year things could have turned outvery badly.A group of knife-wielding young Palestinian menthreatened Luca based on the presumption thathe may be Jewish. Following the incident, Lucaposted on instagram and his post went viral. Here are some excerpts from his post. As Luca was walking away, he got extremelyangry and felt he had to say something. "I turned back around said to him 'what if I was Jewish?'"The group walked up to his face and the guy said“I’ll beat the f*ckin sh*t out of you and kill you”. Luca replied, "What is the need for that?" Thisprovoked the guy to start charging at Luca. Luckily a few women in the group intervened tostop the assault."...they asked me if I was Jewish. I paused for a moment when I saw them drawing knives. Iobviously said no. One guy looked at me withsuch disgust in his eyes and said 'Good.'""The people of Israel and Palestine are amazinghuman beings who deserve to live in peacetogether. I have many friends in both countriesand all they wish for is peace and happiness." Why did Erika Barr get involved withinSIGHT? For Erika it was personal. As thechild and niece of Holocaust survivors fromthe Auschwitz concentration camp, she feltcompelled to work with a charity thatteaches acceptance and respect. Erika wasborn in Prague in 1947 after her parentswere reunited following liberation. Erikaexplains how “The increasing antisemitism,Jew hatred and acts of violence” compelledher to strive for change. She had theopportunity to see inSIGHT’s work first-handwhen visiting a local school. Erika shares:“It is my belief that education can be adeterrent to hatred." Luca is frightened for those who are "visiblyJewish" and live in fear of anti-semitic attacks. Andwe are frightened too. inSIGHT's work in theschools ensures that our children are taught thatrespect, acceptance and kindness are paramount...our work is more important than ever before.have the ability to live in peace, away fromdiscrimination."
