SummaryEditoDear Colleagues,Welcome to this new edition of INSIDE!With only four months left in the year, this new issue of INSIDE is a great time to reflect on our recent achievements and future plans. I’d like to update you on our performance in safety, contracts, and finance. As in previous communications, I also take the opportunity to stress that managing our cash eciently remains crucial (see the article on our mid-year results on pp. 6-7).Sustainability has a prominent place in this edition, explaining the Double Materiality Assessment and how we can decarbonise our projects (pp. 10-13). We highlight BESIX Environment’s expertise with several of their one-stop shop projects (pp. 14-15).We proudly showcase our global projects from the past months on pp. 16-30. In June, we inaugurated the Saint-Denis - Pleyel station in Paris for this summer’s Olympics. In Australia, BESIX Watpac is making strides with the Stage 3 Redevelopment of St George Hospital in Sydney, a true engineering marvel. Another set of projects in this edition reflects our skill and ability to tackle major challenges: from the Qatar Northfield Expansion marine project, built within an active operation, to ‘Team Brugge’s marine, road, and maintenance expertise in Belgium. BESIX Unitec’s 24/7 technical service, CIRCL’s rapid construction of a family home in two months, and the Engineering & Methods Department team of Portonave in Brazil, who demonstrated the importance of thorough preparation, further exemplify our capabilities. You will find a center fold with our Safety Pledge and the 10 Life Saving Rules. These should serve as our guiding light towards a safer working environment. Vigilance should prevail on our construction sites, but also in the use of our IT tools. Pay attention to your click and email behaviour (p. 34).Lastly, we honour two colleagues who have made significant contributions in their roles at BESIX Engineering, serving both as expert and mentor figures. Jean-Louis Govaerts is retiring in November after 37 years at BESIX Engineering, while Christophe Bauduin, with a 35-year career, will continue part-time.As we wrap up this magazine, we look forward to the rest of the year with optimism, a strong order book, and promising financial performance. Let’s keep up the momentum in the final stretch and make the rest of the year even more successful.Happy reading!Pierre SironvalCEO BESIX GroupMILESTONES 04STRATEGY Mid-year status 06Group structure 08Safety Pledge 09SUSTAINABILITY & ESGDouble Materiality Assessment 10QHSEDecarbonising throughout the value chain 12PROJECTS BESIX Environment portrait 14Engineering value at St George Hospital (Australia) 16Unveiling Saint-Denis Pleyel (France) 18North Field Expansion Project nearing completion (Qatar) 22BESIX’s ‘Team Brugge’ (Belgium) 24Socogetra: expertise in wastewater treatment plants (Belgium) 25Meet BESIX Unitec’s Special Forces (Belgium) 26CIRCL, the circular building specialist (Belgium) 27ENGINEERING Jean-Louis Govaerts bids farewell to a remarkable career 28Christophe Bauduin's impressive career continues part time 29BESIX Engineering’s contribution in preparing a project’s execution 30INSIGHTThe role of the Director Public & Corporate Aairs 31OUR PEOPLEInternal mobility within BESIX Group 32INSIGHTProtecting our IT environment 34NEWSFLASHES 35PERSONALIA 37 NEW CONTRACTS 38Published byFlorence BribosiaWriters F. How would you summarise our financial performance in 2023?I’m pleased to report that BESIX Group is going well as we reach the mid-year mark. Our order book is brimming with solid contracts, thanks to the outstanding eorts of our teams across the company. These new projects underscore the recognised value we bring to various sectors. Significant progress has been made in resolving legacy issues and delivering impressive projects on time and within budget. Kudos to all teams for their exceptional dedication. What are the latest updates regarding safety?Safety remains our top priority. I thank everyone who participated in this year’s Safety Time Out, focusing on the renewed BESIX Group Safety Pledge and its four fundamental principles. Over 21,000 participants, including 10,000 from subcontractors and joint venture partners, showcased our collective commitment to a safer workplace. While we celebrate many project sites achieving excellent safety records, we also faced a tragic incident at the Oxagon project site in June. This underscores the critical importance of adhering to our Life Saving Rules daily to ensure everyone’s safety. How are we addressing our financial performance? Our financial outlook is improving, with ambitious targets set for 2024. We aim to generate significant revenues (€3.4 billion) and increase our net profit to €39.1 million. We are beginning to see a turnaround in profitability, thanks to our focus on creating strong proposals that include necessary overhead, profit, and risk considerations. But our profitability still suers today due to unnecessary financial charges from poor cash flow practices. We must collectively step up our cash management eorts. Eective cash flow is vital for investing in our growth. It’s crucial to be diligent with expenditures, ensure prompt invoicing, and tighten collections. Aligning payment conditions with subcontractors and securing advance payments from clients is a must to strengthen our financial position. This must be an attention point for everyone! What initiatives are in place for our workplace culture? It’s impossible to mention all the initiatives taken around the world but let me mention the latest Engagement Survey that was performed in May and June. Results are now being analysed, they will provide valuable insights to drive our collective improvement. We look forward to discussing the results with you all in September. Our culture of unity and collaboration remains our greatest strength, driving us to succeed together. Can you share some highlights from our recent and upcoming projects? Here again, it’s impossible to mention them all – all the more so since BESIX Construction has had a strong first half of 2024, delivering multiple projects such as the Henneaulaan trac complex in Belgium, Mediavaert in the Netherlands, Deloitte’s EMEA University Centre in France, and Uptown Tower in Dubai. We have also secured promising new contracts, including the Dammam Stadium in Saudi Arabia and the EPC contract for a hyperscale data centre in Belgium. Significant progress has been made on iconic projects like the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, the Kangaroo Point Bridge in Brisbane, and the Tour F in Ivory Coast. These achievements highlight our collective project management capabilities and determination. What is the current state of business in BESIX Group’s aliates?BESIX Group’s aliates have performed well this semester. Highlights include BESIX Connect winning a 5-year contract to upgrade electricity distribution networks across Flanders, and BESIX Unitec strengthening its market position in the south of Belgium through the acquisition of a local player. BESIX Infra has begun significant infrastructure projects like the renewal of the Ghent Ring Road, while Socogetra continued to strengthen its position on the Walloon market with several attractive infrastructure projects. LuxTP in Luxembourg has completed several key projects and renewed its order book, while Franki Foundations has made significant progress on the impressive Project One in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Vanhout in Flanders and Jacques Delens in Brussels have successfully delivered various projects and secured new contracts, while Wust has achieved major milestones in Verviers and Liège. BESIX Environment has continued to make strides in environmental projects, frequently in association with BESIX regional entities, highlighting the value of our one-stop shop proposition in the market. How is BESIX Real Estate Development navigating the current market challenges?Despite a challenging economic climate and delays in obtaining permits, BESIX RED has shown remarkable resilience this first semester. We recently secured an agreement with Portugal's largest bank for the WellBe oce building in Lisbon and are about to deliver the Viridis project in Brussels to the institutional investor PATRIZIA. Additionally, there is strong interest in our residential projects in Belgium and Portugal. These successes highlight our ability to deliver high-quality, sustainable developments even in tough times. What are the recent developments and future plans for BESIX Invest?BESIX Invest has reached significant milestones during the first semester, including the financial close of the PPP project for the Ring Road around Ghent, which will be operated and maintained for 30 years. Other exciting concessions are on the horizon, such as the Khalifa University Student Accommodation project in Abu Dhabi and the sewage sludge processing installation in Ghent. BESIX Invest continues to pioneer as an industrial equity provider, with initiatives in the Sustainable Aviation Fuel sector in the Middle East and active solar PV projects in Europe. These eorts underscore our commitment to diversified investment strategies. Mid-year update at BESIX Group: Questions to Group CEO Pierre SironvalSTRATEGY F. Business Enablers(Engineering, Estimating, Procurement, Legal, Insurance, Finance, ICT, People, QHSE, ESG, Communication…)BESIXConstructionBESIX Real Estate DevelopmentBESIX InvestBESIX AliatesRenewed Safety Pledge“In February 2024, during the Annual Meeting attended by the top 150 managers of the group, we relaunched the Safety Pledge. The renewed pledge focuses on four key principles: BE SAFE, Life Saving Rules, Subcontractor Engagement, and Management Safety Walks.” This event marked the beginning of a global rollout of these safety principles across the group. During the Global Safety Time Out of April 2024, the updated Safety Pledge was cascaded throughout the entire group, with over 20,000 internal and external sta participating in workshops, and more than 200 Safety Pledges endorsed. “This initiative aimed to re-engage project teams with the four safety principles and refine our Health & Safety priorities to ensure continuous improvement in managing occupational health and safety risks”, adds Alexis.Reinforced Life Saving Rules“As part of this revitalisation of the Safety Pledge, we have also updated the Life Saving Rules (LSR) to enhance our safety measures”, Alexis continues.LSR 1: Working at Height. This rule now emphasises the importance of collective protective equipment.LSR 3: Line of Fire. This rule stresses the necessity for everyone to position themselves in safe areas, away from hazardous elements.LSR 5: Energy Isolation. This rule highlights the critical need to rigorously follow isolation protocols.LSR 10: Driving. This rule under-scores the importance of wearing a seat belt, and the risks of using a mobile phone while driving.Progress on the digital front“Another significant advancement in our safety journey is the implementation of the digital solution OASIS, which has been deployed throughout the group”, Alexis insists. “OASIS is designed to manage all aspects of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment risks, ensuring that our fundamental safety principles are eectively powered and integrated into our daily operations.”“Our renewed Safety Pledge and updated Life Saving Rules are crucial steps in strengthening our safety culture. By integrating these principles into our daily operations, we ensure a safer future for everyone at BESIX Group”, concludes Alexis. In 2018, BESIX Group's management demonstrated its dedication to safety by signing a solemn Safety Pledge, outlining the fundamental safety principles applicable in the group. “Over the years, our approach to managing critical risks has evolved to adapt to the dynamic nature of our work environment”, introduces Alexis Laroche, Corporate QHSE Director. By 2024, an analysis of high-potential accidents revealed the need for further evolution. Recognising this, the management team decided to update and strengthen the safety commitments to better address current challenges.BESIX Group's commitment to Health and SafetyAt the heart of our orchestra is the conductor: the group’s executive team around the CEO. They set the tempo and ensure that everyone is playing in sync. Their vision and direction keep us moving forward.Like in a grand orchestra, our group holds four families of instruments – our business units:• First, we have our string section: the harmonic foundation of the orchestra – our BESIX Construction businesses. These are the teams on the ground, making things happen. Their expertise and energy drive our projects to completion, on time, on budget, and in safety. There are 5 Construction businesses lines, per geography: BESIX Belgium-Luxembourg, BESIX Europe, BESIX International, BESIX Middle East, and BESIX Watpac in Australia.• Then there are the woodwinds: those adding colours and texture to the orchestra – like BESIX Real Estate develops innovative buildings in prime locations in Europe.• Then we find the brass that contributes power and brilliance, leading with bold melodies – like BESIX Invest oers sophisticated project financing solutions and positions us as a bold industrial equity partner.• Finally, we have the percussion section that adds emphasis and special eects: BESIX Aliates, i.e. our regional and specialised contractors in Europe. Their dynamic is what makes us unique and helps us stand out in the market, frequently with our one-stop shop solutions.Next to the four families of instruments, grand orchestras also include special instruments, covering extended techniques – think electronic instruments for instance. These are the Business Enablers, who provide steady and reliable support to our operations and bring their expert skills to the table.Together, we form a cohesive and dynamic organisation, where every department, team, and individual plays a crucial role. So, the next time you think about our company, picture this grand orchestra where everyone has a part to play – including you! Our group is like a grand orchestra, where every instrument plays a vital role in creating a beautiful symphony. Just like an orchestra, our organisation is made up of various teams, each with its unique function, all working towards a common goal. Do you sometimes find it dicult to know where your role is in this grand orchestra? Let’s take a journey through our organisational model and see how you contribute to the BESIX symphony.BESIX Group Executive CommitteeBESIX Group, a symphony of talentsSTRATEGY F. BribosiaSTRATEGY C. What is a Double Materiality Assessment? This assessment considers two key perspectives: how BESIX’s activities positively or negatively impact the environment and society (‘impact materiality’), and how ESG issues aect BESIX’s financial health, including the risks and opportunities these issues present (‘financial materiality’). Examples of ESG issues that can aect BESIX’s financial materiality include climate change, stricter regulations, etc.The DMA covered BESIX Group’s own operations, from BESIX Construction and BESIX Real Estate Development, to BESIX Invest and BESIX Aliates, across its entire value chain, both upstream and downstream, from the sourcing of materials to the construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructures. The DMA was conducted by an external expert who analysed internal documents, carried out an employee survey, and interviewed key internal and external stakeholders. This approach allowed us to gather a wide range of perspectives.SUSTAINABILITY S. Floor & M. This rigorous process led to the identification of 13 material topics for the Group. These topics are significant because they look at both the positive and negative impacts of BESIX’s activities on the environment, society, and the economy. They also consider potential risks and opportunities for BESIX, in relation to sustainability. This ensures that sustainability priorities are aligned with overall business strategy and governance practices. The results of the Double Materiality Assessment, summarised in the Double Materiality Matrix (see illustration), were presented to and validated by the BESIX ESG Board and Executive Committee. The results were also presented to the key stakeholders who had been consulted. Validation of our existing approachThe good news is that the DMA process validated our existing commitment to ESG principles! Many of the issues we had already prioritised through our previous eorts, such as CO2 reduction, circularity, health and safety, diversity and inclusion, business ethics, and fair labour, were confirmed as material by the DMA. This reassures us that we're on the right track when it comes to focusing on what's important.Expanding our horizonsThe DMA also highlighted additional areas that we should examine further. These include biodiversity, water management, and R&D for sustainable solutions. Why is this important? In addition to helping us identify the most important ESG priorities for BESIX, the Double Materiality Assessment is an important milestone towards full compliance with the EU’s non-financial reporting requirements (CSRD**) by 2026.Putting the DMA into actionSince last May, working groups have been linking our DMA Key Material Topics to the CSRD requirements and analysing our current situation. The next step will be for these working groups to propose a roadmap to close the gaps and achieve CSRD compliance by 2026. 10 11INSIDE Magazine  #120INSIDE Magazine  #120At BESIX Group, we work actively to operate as a responsible company. This helps us understand which sustainability issues matter most to BESIX Group and our stakeholders. Employees, clients, business partners, suppliers, NGOs, communities, and regulators all have a voice. Their concerns are captured and reflected in the Group’s sustainability strategy.

QHSE C. KarelsAs an active member of the United Nations Global Compact, we consider climate change to be one of the most important challenges facing the construction sector today. It is no surprise therefore that we specifically focus on how we can decarbonise our, and our clients’, value chain. Our CO2 reduction actions focus on emission sources, categorised in Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from our owned sources (eg. our fleet), Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy (eg. the fuel we buy to heat our oces), and Scope 3 emissions are all other indirect emissions in our value chain (eg. those produced by our steel suppliers). We have direct control on how we can deal with and lower our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions (eg. by electrifying our fleet). However, Scope 3 emissions are beyond our immediate control – which is frustrating as they amount to more than 90 % of our projects’ total CO2 footprint!Consequently, the biggest impact we can have as a construction company is through the choices we make in design, construction methods, and building materials or the level of influence we can have while studying and negotiating these aspects with our clients and vendors. Here are some concrete examples in our own value chain where we can minimise greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable tenderingIn some projects, the CO2 Performance Ladder is part of the tender criteria, requiring us to set up a project-specific CO2 dossier and the definition of specific reduction targets. Examples include mainly infrastructure projects in Belgium and The Netherlands, such as A16 De Groene Boog in Rotterdam, De Nieuwe Meer intersection in Amsterdam, the R4 highway in Ghent, or the COTU and ROCO projects for the Oosterweel Link in Antwerp.Sustainable design and value engineeringOur Engineering Department can also play a role in reducing the carbon footprint of our projects by applying a number of techniques, like performing a life cycle analysis. This was the case for the KevlinX data centre in Belgium for which various reduction strategies were proposed. The engineering team can also propose sustainable building design and engineering principles, as they did for the Oosterweel Link project, where T-heads will be used instead of traditional cross reinforcement, requiring 32 % less steel and saving more than 930 tonnes of CO2. In the recent upgrade of the Double Bay Ferry Wharf project in New South Wales by BESIX Watpac, the team initially aimed to reduce GHG emissions by 20 %. Through collaboration with the client and consultants, and by exploring alternative designs, they successfully reused a significant portion of existing infrastructure, resulting in a 52 % reduction in embodied carbon compared to the reference design. Our industry has long been known for its significant impact on the environment, but in recent years it has also been recognised for its potential to help mitigate that impact. At BESIX, our global strategy is to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on SDG 13 related to climate change. Let’s dive into this vast topic.Sustainable procurementAs the emissions occurring in the procurement part of the value chain account for a large chunk of our projects’ footprint, we also focus on sourcing more sustainable materials, whenever feasible, such as recycled steel or low-carbon concrete or cement. For instance: Oxagon in the Port of NEOM (Saudi Arabia) is using renewable energy for sheet piles, 41,000 tons of 'green' steel and achieving a 30 % reduction in net embodied carbon. BESIX Infra, in collaboration with Aquafin in Belgium, is piloting fully recyclable sewer pipes, while Franki Foundations is testing a more sustainable injection cement solution for anchors and micro-piles. The Triangle project in Paris incorporates 50 % to 70 % recycled aluminium for façades and various low-carbon concrete mixes for its structure.BESIX is also in close contact with vendors to find more sustainable sourcing solutions. In 2023, we reworked our sustainability ambitions in procurement and presented it to our main cement, concrete, and steel suppliers at the first BESIX Suppliers Forum on Sustainability. In 2024, specific workshops are taking place for the most impacting construction materials, and the second Suppliers Forum is planned in October.Low-carbon construction executionIn the execution of our projects, there are many ways to reduce our carbon footprint. One way is to use energy-ecient equipment on-site. Several BESIX entities in Belgium and The Netherlands have already purchased electric equipment and are setting specific targets to further electrify their fleet. Jacques Delens is testing a mobile battery on one of their sites in Brussels to reduce the need for a grid connection and optimise electricity consumption and BESIX Steel & Formwork has tested a hydrogen-powered power group.Another way is to use renewable energy sources to power construction activities or oces. Here again, within the group, several initiatives have been taken these last few years to equip several of our headquarters with solar panels, for instance at Socogetra, Franki Foundations, BESIX Unitec and BESIX Infra. This new extended building in Schelle is currently equipped with technology by aug·e, the smart energy management software start-up in the portfolio of BESIX Technology. Also, the A27 De Groene Waarden (The Netherlands) site oce has been recently equipped with more than 300 recyclable solar panels. The way you organise the transport or supply of material can also help reduce the carbon footprint of your project. Some of our sites have found creative solutions. At the Triangle project in Paris (France), a quarter of excavated soil was transported by water, which led to a saving of 280 tonnes of CO2. On top of that, 100 % of the soil was reused in road or quarry development for example. CIRCL and BuildUp, two other start-ups in the BESIX Technology portfolio, are using modular construction or prefabrication methods to reduce waste, thus also reducing the carbon footprint of their construction projects. Our carbon-conscious value chain, from start to finishIn conclusion, as Jan Van Steirteghem, COO BESIX Construction, states: Our team of in-house experts collaborates with clients to identify areas where sustainability can be improved and oer innovative solutions that are both practical and eective. By incorporating green building practices into construction projects, our clients can benefit from increased asset value, improved risk management and control, and lower operating costs. We encourage our clients to join us in our commitment to sustainability and to collaborate with our team of experts to implement concrete solutions at the earliest stage of a project’s design concept. MorrisonThe New South Wales (NSW) Government’s St George Hospital Stage 3 Redevelopment in Sydney commenced in 2023. The project will bring together a range of ambulatory and out-patient services to provide the local community with access to new, state-of-the-art facilities. As the Australian construction industry faces resourcing shortages and mounting ESG requirements, BESIX Watpac is setting new benchmarks with this project through a number of initiatives such as engineering excellence, leveraging digital construction technologies, and excelling in sustainable practices.Engineering excellence wins project and expedites programmeFollowing a competitive six-week tender period, BESIX Watpac secured the contract with a defining engineering excellence solution to re-orientate the building and fit the hospital operational services over two levels of basement rather than three, as proposed in the original tender design. This solution will save two months on the programme and provide significant material savings by reducing sandstone excavation and construction works. It will also reduce the hospital’s long-term operational costs and the building’s carbon footprint.Working in collaboration with Health Infrastructure NSW, the team achieved one of the fastest State Significant Development Modifications (read planning approval) in NSW Health’s history enabling works to commence within three months of winning the project. Continuing to move at a rapid rate, within the first twelve months of works the project achieved some incredible statistics: • 82,402 tonnes of sandstone removed• 169 piles completed• 870 tonnes of reinforcement fixed • 6,450 m³ of concrete poured • Almost 200,000 incident-free hoursVirtual Reality transforms stakeholder engagement, streamlines designThe project team introduced Virtual Reality (VR) technology early in the project to enhance collaboration and streamline the design process.Using VR, the Hospital’s sta members can explore their future workspace before construction begins, immersing themselves in a realistic representation of the project and enabling them to make informed decisions about design.BESIX Watpac’s Digital Engineering Lead, Linde Ryckeboer explains, "The technology brings the building to life for stakeholders before it materialises on site. It increases interaction and improves collaboration by taking our client on the journey through the digital version of their building and enabling them to get a good feel for the final outcome."Beyond the St George Hospital project, BESIX Watpac is exploring how VR can be used in a variety of ways. These include its use on upcoming projects for subcontractor site inductions, to model workplace health and safety hazards, and inspire the next generation by providing hands-on experiences of the construction industry at career expos.Piloting BESIX Watpac Sustainability Strategy 2.0The St George Hospital Redevelopment is one of five projects selected to pilot BESIX Watpac’s new Sustainability Strategy 2.0. Through a Strategy Action Plan, the project team selected actions across environment, social, and governance pillars material to BESIX Watpac operations. These actions, derived from industry best practices, are designed to guide projects in delivering sustainability and meeting client expectations. To date, the project has delivered 20 % of their targeted 48 actions. As of May 2024, project achievements included:• Exceeding the 50 % local workforce target – currently 87 %• Exceeding female participation of BESIX Watpac employees of 10 % – currently 38 %• On track to deliver Community Engagement initiatives – the team has undertaken seven activities, ranging from ‘Name the Crane’ competitions to school career events and site visitsIn addition, BESIX Watpac is also tackling skills shortages by meeting targets set by NSW Infrastructure Skills Legacy Programme including apprenticeships, traineeships, and upskilling opportunities. 18 19INSIDE Magazine  #120INSIDE Magazine  #120PROJECTS M. VanderschrieckThe much-awaited Saint-Denis - Pleyel metro station was successfully completed and handed over by BESIX France at the beginning of June. The station, designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, is the largest out of the 68 new stops of the Grand Paris Express metro. The accomplishment of Saint-Denis - Pleyel represents a significant milestone for BESIX France. The team handed over the station on time to our client Société des grands projets, after completing all architectural, façade and technical works, as well as all external works on the esplanade of the station. New transportation hub The Saint-Denis - Pleyel station covers a total area of 34,000 m² spread across nine levels, four of which are underground, extending down to 28 metres below ground. This makes it the biggest station out of the 68 new stops of the Grand Paris Express metro. It will interconnect lines 14, 15, 16, and 17 and is set to handle 250,000 passengers daily. The station is an essential component of the Grand Paris Express network that will provide better service to the Great Metropolitan region around the French capital. An ambitious public transport project in the Île-de-France region, designed to connect suburban areas directly, bypassing the city centre, to alleviate congestion on existing lines and improve connectivity. The Grand Paris Express is being built in phases and will be fully completed for the 2030s. High stakes, high achievementConstruction work on the station began in mid-2020. BESIX’s involvement in the project started with no less than ten months of coordination. By mid-2023, the structure had reached its highest point of 35 metres. Once the above ground structure was completed, BESIX finalised all the interior works, MEP installations, and façade in a record time of ten months.Next to the station, the €115 million contract BESIX France signed with Société des grands projets also included all building trades of four service structures, to ensure passenger safety in case of emergencies, with ventilation and smoke extraction of the tunnels. An important challenge was coordinating the logistics and the co-contractors’ work, including metro wagon systems and other systems related to the operation of the station.“During a critical phase of the project, we initiated an aggressive acceleration to overcome hurdles, notably those arising from substantial change orders, successfully recouping more than a year’s worth of delay,” explains Carlo Schreurs. “This strategic push involved ramping up our resources, optimising our workflows, and deepening our collaboration with all partners and co-contractors. We not only caught up to our original timeline but also enhanced the project’s eciency and productivity, ensuring we remained on track for the scheduled completion.”Olympic deadline In terms of deadline, there was one major requirement: being ready for the Paris Olympic Games this summer. As the Saint-Denis - Pleyel station is a key multimodal hub for transportation around the French capital, it also played a crucial role during summer connecting the main Olympic venues. Line 14 transported sports fans to the Athletes’ Village, Olympic Aquatics Centre, Stade de France, and the Orly Airport.A challenging deadline as delivery was scheduled for June 2024. “Every project we undertake is a part of BESIX’s DNA. It is when faced with the most complex challenges, such as the construction of this station to a tight deadline, that we demonstrate the greatest creativity and flexibility. Since the start, we have been striving to excel as engineers and to coordinate the many people involved in the project to ensure the station opens on time”, underlines Jean Di Paolo, BESIX Construction Manager for the Saint-Denis - Pleyel project.Welcome aboard!Following the approval in May from the Safety and Accessibility Consultative Committee of the Seine-Saint-Denis Department, the station was successfully completed by BESIX and handed over to its owner Société des grands projets. The completion of this exceptional complex project will have a profound and lasting impact on the daily lives of the people of Île-de-France. On 24 June 2024, the Saint-Denis Pleyel station as well as the extension of metro line 14, were ocially inaugurated by French President Macron. 22INSIDE Magazine  #120INSIDE talked to Benoît Vallée, Project Director, who gave additional insights on the project:Can you describe what was the most challenging engineering feat related to the project? One of the biggest challenges was redesigning the foundations for the berthing dolphins, marine structures that absorb vessel impact and provide lateral support during loading or unloading. Initially requiring 200-tonne slabs, our in-house team re-engineered them to 105-tonne slabs, allowing us to use our own equipment, simplifying the process, and increasing eciency. Can you describe the most challenging construction-related aspect of the project? Our project took place within an active facility. Consequently, we had to perfect our usual construction methods to suit this very restrictive environment. The improvement incorporated upgrading some of our working tools and accessories. What makes the QNF project unique compared to other projects? As the construction of the new berths took place inside an active facility, this gave us little margin for human error. We mobilised additional supervision and coached the team to ensure smooth and safe operations while minimising risks. The team performed well, considering the daily material haul quantities. I strongly believe every team member improved their knowledge about work and safety, positively impacting their next assignment. How did you build and maintain a cohesive and motivated team throughout the project’s life cycle? We emphasised face-to-face interactions, crucial for resolving issues quickly and maintaining team morale. Regularly visiting project teams and remaining accessible to everyone is extremely important. Demonstrating respect promotes unity. We also had regular celebrations of achievements in progress and safety, cultural celebrations, and team-building activities. What has this project taught you about leadership? The importance of adaptability and building relationships with all stakeholders helps in navigating complex projects. El NammariLocated in Ras Laan, Qatar, the North Field Expansion (QNF) Project, which commenced in March 2021, is now in its final stages. As a principal subcontractor to Samsung C&T for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) scope, BESIX is set to elevate Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million to 110 million tonnes per annum by adding four new LNG berths to the six existing ones at the Port of Ras Laan.Milestones and achievementsThe QNF project exemplifies BESIX’s marine excellence. Each berth, constructed from 840 prefabricated concrete blocks, is meticulously stacked, and secured with a cast in-situ capping beam for a smooth, secure surface. At its peak, the team comprised 850 members, now reduced to around 600 as completion nears. Daily tasks included transporting and placing 10,000 tons of materials, using crane barges and divers for foundation and block placement, and implementing state-of-the-art equipment for safe and ecient operations. With much of the construction work completed, the team is now focused on final adjustments and minor rectifications, expected to continue until October. The completion of the last capping beam in June marked the end of major in-situ concrete work. Remaining tasks include rock armouring to protect structures from erosion and installing access bridges. A brief closeout phase will address minor issues and ensure all contractual obligations are met before the project is transferred to the client.Beyond expanding port capacity, the project emphasised fostering teamwork, maintaining strong client relationships, and ensuring safety while making good progress. 24 25INSIDE Magazine  #120INSIDE Magazine  #120BESIX construction sites can be found in all corners of the world, but there are also many exciting local projects in Belgium. Our colleagues from the north of the country, 'Team Brugge' as they like to call themselves, concentrate on projects ranging from marine, road, and maintenance works in West and East Flanders. They mainly work with public administrations such as coastal ports, public companies involved in water control and management of navigable waterways, or departments involved in asset management of civil engineering structures. For more than twenty years, Socogetra has been a major player in the construction of wastewater treatment plants in Wallonia. Its expertise is an integral part of the Société Publique de Gestion des Eaux (SPGE) programme to improve the quality of water discharged into rivers. With more than thirty projects completed for public and private customers, the company has built up a solid reputation in the wastewater treatment plant sector. Socogetra's structural flexibility means it can tackle any type of market, whether it involves new construction, renovation, expansion, or replacement of existing plants, from the 180 PE plant, like at Plain de Holset, to the 40,000 PE plant at Trivières. Socogetra rises to the challenge! The BESIX touchIn recent years, BESIX built up a strong reputation in, among other things, maintaining the canals and waterways in West Flanders. What sets them apart from other companies is that at BESIX they can fall back on an Engineering Department and professional work preparation thanks to the diversity in the group. This diversity, or one-stop shop, gives BESIX a knowledge advantage which creates trust with customers. "Together with the equipment department, we try to maximise the use of our own marine engineering and pile-driving equipment, and even expand it in the future," says Dieter Van Parys, Operations Manager BESIX Belgium-Luxembourg. "Our work preparation and project management are done centrally from our oce in Bruges. This allows us to support dierent works at the same time." A clear focusThe team has specialised over the years and today focuses on three types of works. Within maintenance works for waterways and ports, BESIX has the western canals (Ghent-Ostend-Nieuwpoort) and the Yser basin with associated civil engineering structures in its portfolio. This requires continuous maintenance of bridges, water retention structures, and banks. If damage is caused to this infrastructure by third parties, storm damage, or flooding, they will also be called upon. These are smaller assignments of €10,000 to €1 million and are executed at short notice within a pre-agreed financial framework. The marine engineering equipment cannot be adequately deployed purely on maintenance works. Therefore, the team is keen to expand its work volume to include marine engineering projects of up to €10 million. In addition, civil works of the same magnitude and within the region are also part of their package. This means that they help the tender department, where necessary, to tender for these works. “The customers are often the same boards we also encounter at 'larger' BESIX construction sites. This also creates a bond and gives us an extra advantage”, Dieter Van Parys says. The team also carries out subcontracted works on its own sites. At large BESIX construction sites, there is occasionally a need to carry out small marine works, pile-driving works, or other civil components with subcontractors. This allows BESIX to share expertise and sometimes also to carry out the works itself. Moreover, the use of own equipment in JVs always benefits the group. And what we do ourselves, we do better! Wastewater treatment plants: a highly technical expertise The construction of wastewater treatment plants requires advanced technical expertise in several areas of civil engineering. The sites chosen by project owners are often of inadequate quality, requiring construction methods and foundations adapted to the low load-bearing capacity and the presence of shallow water. To optimise the choice of techniques, Socogetra can rely on the expertise of its in-house engineering oce to draw up calculation notes and execution methods. Another distinctive feature is that the concrete used must be waterproof and resistant to chemical attack. Watertightness tests are carried out before backfilling. Frédéric Oury, Civil Engineering Director, explains: “We adapt the construction phasing and are very careful with the technical details to guarantee these requirements. Committed to sustainability, we use environmentally-friendly techniques. For example, the Pinchart plant is the first reed bed treatment plant in Walloon Brabant, alongside our projects at Plain de Holset and Awenne, in particular.” Our future Over the last few years, Socogetra's turnover specifically linked to wastewater treatment plants has risen from €4 million in 2020 to €15 million in 2023. His journey started in the Emirates, initially in tenders before transitioning to the design oce, focusing primarily on large-scale projects such as towers and stadiums. Over the years, he evolved from structural calculations to overseeing the design across all disciplines. Besides his role at BESIX, Jean-Louis has been a professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He also conducted inter-company courses on high-rise buildings and design management for over 15 years. He fondly recalls, “I thoroughly enjoyed working with younger engineers and took pleasure and pride in sharing my knowledge.”Christophe Bauduin began his journey with BESIX in 1989, marking the start of a remarkable 35-year career. Initially working in the tendering department, he spent most of his career in the design oce, specialising in geotechnical and civil engineering. His work spanned from the head oce to various project sites.Jean-Louis's expertise progressively built up with his involvement in prestigious projects that BESIX realised worldwide. For him, “a building is not just a structure of slabs and columns. The projects we handle are often exceptional in size and complexity. Alongside the technical challenges, coordinating multiple disciplines is critical.”In the late 90s, he spent one year between Paris and Abu Dhabi representing the Engineering Department to the French JV partner for the design of the Abu Dhabi Trade Centre. From 1998 to 2000, he worked on the massive 255,000 m² Nile City Project in Cairo. BESIX Engineering handled the structural design starting from a white page right up to the construction shop drawings. “This project, featuring three towers with two reaching 150 metres, was the first time BESIX designed such a huge and tall complex. It was a major milestone for our Engineering Department in which we take great pride.”From 2005 to 2006, he travelled weekly to London to oversee the design of the 300-metre-high Aspire Tower in Doha, built for the 2006 Asian Olympic Games in Qatar. "BESIX took over from a competitor with barely any design work started. We had only a year and a half to complete the tower, crucial for holding the Olympic flame. It was an incredible challenge, which was also very fulfilling due to the determined team spirit of the whole team.”London was again Jean-Louis’ destination in 2011-2012 to manage the design of the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Jeddah, working closely with the UK-based client Saudi Aramco. 30INSIDE Magazine  #120ENGINEERING I. BuysseINSIGHT C. KarelsCan you describe the main responsibilities of your role as Director Public & Corporate Aairs?Very generally, Public Aairs focuses on building and managing our reputation and relationships. That means connecting our people with the right political and economic partners and decision-makers, raising issues at the right level, and participating in relevant events. Through targeted reputation management, we aim for a strong reputation that puts us on the map and creates a favourable factor which can be crucial in getting access, coming to a solution, and even winning projects. What are the biggest challenges you face in your role, and how do you address them?Maintaining our network is essential. This needs to be continuously updated as ambassadors, ministers, and their sta are only in oce for a finite period. We work on our network by inviting people to lunches or to events. This way, we build a relationship of trust so that we can get in touch with contacts if necessary. Another challenge is the unwieldiness of the authorities, which means it sometimes takes weeks or months to get something done. It should also be remembered that what is important to us may be a minor detail to the other party and so you have to weigh up how much pressure you can apply. Can you give an example of a recent initiative you led that had a significant impact?Recently, the Belgian Prime Minister De Croo visited some countries in the Middle East, including Qatar. We were asked by the cabinet whether we were interested in attending an iftar with the Qatari Prime Minister. The fact that we were asked to be part of the delegation shows that our public aairs function is eective and that we are positively on the radar. How do you measure the success of your public aairs activities? When the BESIX name easily opens doors at cabinets, embassies, and at other institutions, that are more dicult for other companies to open, or when these parties themselves contact us, we know that we are doing a good job of reputationally 'marketing' our activities. Sometimes success is more tangible: if we have a problem somewhere and we manage to get our people around the table with the right parties and come to a solution, then you can obviously call it a success. What are the most important trends in public aairs that you think will aect our industry in the next few years? In Europe, we see a huge increase in regulation and reporting obligations and governments that act more often as economic actors. So in the future, we will have more interaction with authorities. In non-Western countries, we see that people are less keen on the arrival of Western companies. So we will have to work harder to prove ourselves and invest more in relationships in those countries. In the Port of Navegantes, BESIX is contributing to the upgrade of Portonave's port infrastructure by constructing a new quay wall. This project presents unique challenges, as the new structure must be built in the same location as the existing quay wall without disrupting ongoing port operations. “We needed to design a solution that considered the existing infrastructure”, Valérie starts o. “For this, we could only rely on the as-built plans. But throughout the years, several improvement works had been done on the existing quay wall, which meant that these plans could not be fully trusted. To mitigate the risks, we developed a flexible design that accommodates unforeseen geometrical variations in the existing structure”, she continues. This is also where Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) has proven its worth, enabling BESIX to explore all aspects, such as the design, thoroughly in advance. “Having a strong team from the start is a big benefit for a project, and Portonave is the proof of that”, Michel says. However, despite thorough preparation and risk mitigation, unexpected issues can still arise during execution. “For example, our foundations subcontractor was not ready to commence work on time, which meant that the project would be significantly delayed”, Michel explains. “We needed to look for alternative activities for the labour on site, which we found in prefabrication. By adjusting our internal planning, we could put the focus on precast related design and provide the site team with the drawings for a maximum of precast elements. Thanks to this, the labour on site, mobilised from all over Brazil, wasn’t demobilised and was able to start working before the start of the foundations.”Collaboration with the site team is paramount in this regard. “While we look for an alternative solution, the site team needs to be inventive and show resilience. So, we should definitely give a shoutout to them as well!”, concludes Valérie. The Portonave project exemplifies how eective preparation and collaboration between the site team and our Engineering Department are pivotal in ensuring a project’s continuity. This system oers a rigorous evaluation of a company's CO2 management system across five dierent levels, with Level 5 representing the highest CO2 awareness and most active reduction strategies both within the supply chain and sector. The comprehensive audit involved a meticulous review of the CO2 management systems at BESIX and its associated companies by external auditor KIWA, at projects like the De Nieuwe Meer intersection and the A27 highway upgrade between Houten and Everdingen in the Netherlands, and the sub-project that BESIX, as part of the ROCO consortium, is realising for the Oosterweel link in Belgium. Achieving and maintaining Level 5 certification underscores the group's commitment to environmental stewardship and validates its ongoing eorts towards sustainable operations.
