STRATEGY F Bribosia 5 QUESTIONS TO HANS BEERLANDT CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER BESIX GROUP INSIDE Hans as CFO what would you share with our readers Firstly a round of applause for the colleagues responsible for our record 5 2 billion euros order book as of 31 December 2022 This landmark figure reflects countless hours of hard work by our engineers buyers planners and many more who worked tirelessly to secure winning bids As a result we ve maintained a robust project pipeline in 2023 and secured new contracts to sustain our momentum Our revenue stream continues to flourish illustrating the consistent inflow of projects INSIDE Does this suggest a full recovery in our profitability Not exactly Let s spotlight our net results they require our undivided attention Margins in Contracting are still thin highlighting the need for thoughtful financial management to attain sustainable profitability Merely increasing volume isn t the end goal we aim to generate more profit INSIDE How can we nudge our profitability towards the right direction To boost profitability especially in Contracting we must be discerning focusing on projects where risks are evenly balanced Through careful evaluation and selection of projects with favourable risk profiles we can optimise our returns Encouragingly this strategy has started bearing fruit with improved gross margins on our recent contracts highlighting the positive effect of our profit centric approach in our order book More than ever in Contracting choosing the right projects and preparing them adequately before execution are key to more profitability INSIDE Could you discuss the current cash flow scenario Of course In addition to being selective with projects rigorous cash management is paramount Cash is the lifeblood of any business including at BESIX Group To give you a few practical examples those managing projects should ensure prompt accurate invoicing This maintains a consistent cash flow and enables timely receipt of payments from clients and partners Everyone across teams should keep tabs on expenses to avoid unnecessary outlay When purchasing products or services team up with our Procurement department to negotiate favourable terms with suppliers This collective responsibility helps optimise our financial health INSIDE How would you summarise the first half of 2023 The size and quality of our order book are promising However it will bear its fruits mainly in 2024 and beyond In 2023 thin margins on challenging Contracting projects taken in the past and still under execution add pressure on our Inside Magazine 117 Inside Magazine 117 SUSTAINABILITY F Bribosia In the world of construction classical design parameters have long been the guiding principles that ensure that all built assets are functional safe and visually appealing They formed the foundational pillars encompassing factors such as structural integrity cost effectiveness and functionality Each parameter plays a vital role much like the instruments in an orchestra contributing to the successful completion of a project REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF OUR PROJECTS THE RISING SIGNIFICANCE OF CO2 AS A DESIGN PARAMETER THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY S set by the Paris Agreement and the EU Green ALARMING CARBON FOOTPRINT Deal leading to irreversible and dangerous However a new player emerged on the effects of climate change introduces Eveline scene CO2 It introduced a revolutionary concept CO2 as a design parameter It is a real game changer which profound impact begins to reveal itself Buyens Sustainability and Concrete Senior Engineer at BESIX Engineering So why is CO2 such a crucial parameter for BESIX Research reveals that 70 of construction industry CO2 emissions come from building energy usage 28 from building materials and 2 from construction activities The main responsibility for addressing the 70 of operational CO2 typically falls under the architect and client in designing energy 10 efficient buildings As contractors we hold a crucial role in the remaining 30 by selecting CO2 or carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas more sustainable materials implementing that contributes to climate change It is like a optimised design and execution methods and silent assassin slowly but steadily altering the utilising eco friendly construction equipment delicate balance of our planet To limit global Moreover our ambition extends beyond these warming to 1 5 C we must achieve complete measures encompassing initiatives like for decarbonisation by 2050 Our own industry example smart buildings with aug e and construction is responsible for 40 of global investments in greener energy sources energy CO2 emissions Urgent action is Through these diverse activities BESIX essential as we face a concerning reality at can actively contribute to a positive our current pace we won t achieve the goals environmental impact Circular Carbstone technology block being used in world premiere in a renovation project by Vanhout presented to the press in December 2022 EMBRACING CO2 AS A NEW DESIGN PARAMETER Similar to a captain navigating a ship through treacherous waters BESIX carefully navigates the balance between functionality and sustainability ensuring projects stay on course towards their goals while minimising environmental impact By incorporating CO2 as a design parameter we can become ambassadors of sustainable construction emphasises Eveline While we acknowledge that Europe and governments are exploring decarbonisation strategies and carbon footprint limits on construction projects we don t want to wait passively for forthcoming regulations to take effect Instead we actively pursue knowledge prepare ourselves for future legislation and already address the existing commercial and certification obstacles Our aim is to pave the way and be prepared for a greener future through proactive action mainly towards our client in order to help them add value to their project Within BESIX we have the opportunity to make an environmental impact that goes beyond what any of us could achieve individually To raise awareness I often cite that 1 m concrete has an equal footprint to driving 2 500 km with your car A small optimisation in design quantity or waste management does really make the difference By integrating CO2 as a design parameter the Engineering Department not only wants to raise awareness among its own engineers but also among clients making them more conscious of their environmental impact concludes Eveline 5 WAYS TO LOWER THE CO2 FOOTPRINT OF A PROJECT 2 Material usage Optimise the design 5 Construction waste management in terms of quantities minimise waste by Implement effective waste management There are numerous approaches for accurately estimating material quantities practices including sorting and our industry to lower its carbon and implement efficient inventory recycling construction waste Promote footprint but the following five methods management systems Avoid over the reuse of materials to minimise the focus specifically on our core business ordering or excessive use of materials to environmental impact Implement contracting and highlight how each of reduce CO2 emissions associated with material passports that contain us can make a difference within BESIX their production and transportation different time zones We recognise the significance of maintaining a healthy work life balance and are committed to promoting this for all our team members The right to disconnect aims to cultivate this balance mitigating the negative impacts of workrelated stress and burnout This being said the right to disconnect is not an obligation Our workplace has become increasingly flexible largely due to practices like teleworking As such we permit our employees to connect at times that best suit their schedules and work styles We are confident that our shared enthusiasm for our projects coupled with our daily commitment will strike the ideal balance To wrap up it is important to underscore the value of time off It is vital for maintaining a healthy work life balance and can rejuvenate us leaving us ready to embrace new challenges As Geert puts it If establishing the right to disconnect rules means reinforcing that it s okay to be offline after office hours we ve made another stride in our mission to enhance the well being of our colleagues TIME FOR A CHANGE Has it always been your dream to work on an international project Or are you interested to dive into another entity s business
