Thank You for Eating Pancakes By Jono Moehlig Tillman House s Garden He makes grass grow for the cattle and plants for people to cultivate bringing forth food from the earth Psalm 104 14 By Beverly Marshall Goodell The Christian calendar has the ability to remind us about the important things to our faith and to our lives Each spring we gather together to remember the time of Lent Each Lenten season many of us fast from different things like a certain food or maybe social media While we fast we hopefully use this time as a reminder that our lives don t depend on the chocolate we decided not to eat but more fully on the life love and grace of Christ But before Ash Wednesday before we remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return we gather to celebrate Shrove Tuesday a day of feasting before the fast One of my favorite traditions at Smyrna First is the support and love the community and congregation show each Shrove Tuesday as we come together to eat pancakes and raise money for our youth summer mission trip This year was more of the same amazing support as we gathered in the Welcome Center experienced the grace of Christ through pancakes and were able to raise funds to help send our youth to Blue Ridge I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all those who have prayed for us who have given money in support of us and will continue to think and pray for us and with us as we prepare to be witnesses of Jesus this summer If you didn t have the chance to donate to our trip and would like to please contact me so I can help facilitate that donation Also if you re willing to commit to praying for a specific person on the trip as a prayer partner please let me jono smyrnafumc org 44 In the spring of 2021 the Cliff Jordan Continuing Education Center began offering classes on vegetable gardening to the community Raised garden beds were installed near the back side of Tillman House between the shed and the pavilion The goal of the garden was to help members of the community learn about how they can supplement their food budget by growing some of their own food The Family Gardening class sessions were held on Saturday mornings and included a mixture of lessons on what to grow and hands on activities such as installing raised beds planting pruning and harvesting the garden produce Most of the vegetables were grown from small vegetable plants that were purchased locally including tomatoes peppers collards and kale With the success of the 2021 crops more raised beds were added in 2022 and our vegetable gardening became a year round project This permitted us to expand the curriculum to include companion planting succession planting pest control and seed saving We also added some outdoor compost bins and an inexpensive bucket drip irrigation system Adults in the Family Gardening class assembled and installed the irrigation lines This year students in the Tillman House After School Program had an opportunity to use the Tillman House vegetable garden to learn about growing vegetables as one of their enrichment options Their activities included observing different kinds of seeds planting seeds raising seedlings in two glass aquariums equipped with grow lights planting seeds and seedlings in the outside garden beds identifying the parts of plant and composting All the produce from the Tillman House raised bed gardens has been given away to recipients of the Tillman House Food Box Program In 2022 we were able to give away about 200 pounds of fresh produce including lettuce spinach kale Swiss chard collards peas beans garlic onions zucchini yellow squash turnips beets three varieties of tomatoes four varieties of peppers okra cucumbers two varieties of potatoes acorn squash and butternut squash Our first crop of peanuts will be ready for distribution after Thanksgiving All this produce is in addition to the vegetable gardening education we provided to about thirty members of the community 55

Gone Fishin by Aaron Caldwell Madison Nierling Rev Kathryn Davis The walls in the garage were lined with Vienna You re invited to a FISH FRY Friday March 17 beginning at 6 00pm In Green Space Rain plan Fellowship Hall Click Here for Reservations 88 sausages and other canned staples and on the far right corner hung the fishing poles with the tackle boxes sitting on the shelf beside them The outdoor freezer was stashed with hotdogs and frozen bread for the ducks Dothan Alabama didn t have much to offer in the way of fun but the small pond in the neighborhood made for years of memories You could count on a fishing trip as long as the weather was nice My brother would run off the ducks I would get told to be quiet as to not scare the fish away and my sister would sit making crowns out of the flowers she would find surrounding that little watering hole There s just something about fishing that brings a sense of calm My grandfather was a man of few words but fishing always brought the light to his eyes My dad would pull the fish off of our hooks and let us hold them for just a moment before we threw them back into the water Fishing takes and teaches patience and if you re lucky or maybe even strategic you ll feel that little tug on the line that ends with a fish to show off for your efforts of sitting and waiting waiting and sitting What does it say about discipleship that many of the stories written throughout Scripture include fishing The fish specifically the Christian fish is a symbol that has gone back generations There was a time when the Ichthys fish was the symbol of early Christians even more so than the cross The name of the Ichthys comes from the ancient Greek word meaning fish It s a symbol early Christians used for Jesus Christ Broken down it means Jesus Christ Son of God Savior Whether it be baptism the calling of fisherman or the feeding of multitudes through the multiplication of fish and loaves the fish became a lasting Christian symbol Since it is believed that Christ suffered and died on the cross on a Friday some Christians have traditionally set aside Friday as a day to unite through disciplines with Jesus s suffering specifically during the season of Lent Throughout the ages and spanning cultures meat has been seen as a worthy sacrifice as it was considered a delicacy Centuries ago disciplines for Lent and Good Friday were developed when meat was a food of celebration Because of Friday s association with Christ s suffering and meat s connotation with celebration Christians mainly cathalics for generations have given up meat on the Fridays during Lent as a faithful fast and heartfelt sacrifice to unite with the sacrifice of Christ upon the cross They would instead eat fish as it was not perceived as a food to look forward to at the time If you are looking for a way to draw nearer to Christ Son of God Savior this Lent we offer up the discipline to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday Fridays during Lent and Good Friday During Lent we are remembering Ichthys by coming together as a community with a time of fun fellowship and a Fish Fry for St Patrick s Day You re invited to join in on March 17 beginning at 6 00pm at Smyrna First UMC The Discipleship Committee has seen the significance of fishing weaving in and throughout what it means to grow in discipleship together whether it be casting our nets trusting that we will bring in a multitude or seeing the feeding of the 5 000 through our own eyes as we gather and eat fish together We thought it would be fitting to bring our Smyrna First UMC community together through a Fishing Tournament which will raise funds to support Discipleship Ministries at SFUMC On April 29 SFUMC will be holding a fishing tournament at GB s lake in Smyrna from 9am to 12pm We can t wait to enjoy a little healthy competition in the beautiful spring weather GB s will be stocking the lake with trout and will have bait available for purchase on the day of the event There will be divisions for elementary middle and high schoolers as well as adults and seniors We will also have activities available for little ones to get in on the fun too Winners of each division will be determined by most fish caught and will receive a prize Registration fees include a t shirt and are 35 for adults 20 for children and 10 for kids 5 and under registration will open soon We hope you will be a part of all the fun to come Smyrna First will be holding a FISHING TOURNAMENT APRIL 29 9am 12pm GB s Lake 99

You Are Not Alone by Rev Chaloea Hale God had been tugging on my heart for a space that would be a blessing for our congregation and community Not only a space but moments where we could come together and share listen smile laugh shed tears if needed and simply be During that time Linda Evans came to me confirming what was tugging on my heart She may not have known it until now but her coming to me regarding the beginning of The Gathering was confirmation The very thing that I was praying for was being answered through her Losing a loved one is heartbreaking and is something that we will all experience if we have not already The moment we lose a loved one is where many of us find ourselves in a place where we have no idea what we are going to do As the days and the weeks pass by and although it s a challenge we find strength to keep going Even in our heartbreak God reminds us that we are not alone In the Bible we find comfort in knowing that God is close to the broken hearted Psalm 34 18 The Gathering is where we come together find joy in our memories of our loved one s but also acknowledging our loss If you find yourself wanting to be in the moment and experiencing God through presence and community we would love to have you Join us on second and fourth Thursdays at 2pm in A102 My husband Kelly Vining was diagnosed with Kelly went to his eternal home on October 2 What is Lent by Kate Bowler Lent marks the forty days leading up to Easter An Invitation by Kate Bowler Kate is a New York Times bestselling author podcast host and a professor at Duke University Sometimes we wait Spiritually I mean We just and be betrayed religious and political structures will conspire and conform to great evil nothing wait And wait Maybe something will happen will be peace on earth or goodwill to all humanIn the meantime our days are complicated by feelings that don t seem altogether very spiritual kind No wisemen and starry nights It s misery And it should make us pause That is where we Deep annoyance Rehearsals of old fights Anger at friends who are in our defense pretty meet Jesus We meet him on his way down frustrating sometimes Our bodies ache We are Lent is our annual rehearsal of the cosmic moment when Jesus suffering and death and consumed by somebody else s problems and resurrection will change how we experience we are fairly certain their lives are rushing death Death will not be the defining truth toward despair about us Someday we will be freed from the So we wait At least I do I assume that in some gorgeous and horrible limitations of our human future day I will feel the truth of my spiritual belief that God is with us That God never leaves lives and we will live forever with God which is That God s presence is best and I can t prove VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME TO IMAGINE But it s the truth But first Jesus suffers and dies that this is theologically true on bad days We walk with him And he walks with us When life is headed downhill I tend to wait When Lent rolls around every year Jesus will walk with us through whatever kind we are offered a chance to stop waiting of Lenten day you are having The lovely one The garbage one The one that barely seems When Lent rolls around every year we are offered like it counted at all As we toggle through a chance to stop waiting We are in the part of every kind of emotion boredom devastation the story when Jesus is an arrow pointed straight happiness irritation we want to say bless at his own end He will die But first he will suffer this Lent 14 mirroring the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness It is a practice that began during the 4th century as a way to prepare Christians for the holiest days of the year During Lent we ask God to show us the world as it is We begin with the reality of our finitude rubbed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday from dust we were made to dust we shall return Then we walk through that reality in a kind of dress rehearsal It s the downward slope of God the Great Descent where the whole Church walks toward the cross Frankly Lent is my favorite part of the church calendar because it is a time when the whole church is on the losing team A time when we all get a minute to tell the truth Life is so beautiful and life is so hard For everyone Of course the cross isn t the end of the story but this season of grief is carved out to acknowledge the reality of Christ s sacrifice And the reality of suffering that so many of our circumstances reflect too our own pain and grief and despair Easter is coming yes But for now we sit in the ashes of our broken dreams and broken hearts knowing that God sits here with us Many people practice Lent by giving something up alcohol meat chocolate social media Some take up something new a new prayer practice or swearing profusely like I did one year you probably remember reading about this in Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I ve Loved But Lent is an incredible moment for the spiritual honesty we are practicing here Together we re going to bless the days we have while longing for the future God promised when there will be no tears no pain no email LENTEN STUDY BLESS THE LENT WE ACTUALLY HAVE by Kate Bowler Wednesdays 5 20pm 6 00pm Room B201 Click Here to Register so we can have materials ready 15 15 Fish Fry Reservations

Easter Eggs What Is the History Behind This Tradition An Excerpt from Chase Oaks Church posted by Jennifer Rogers Contributing Writer March 24 2022 Have you ever wondered what eggs have to do with Easter Why do we hunt for Easter eggs every year What is the connection between Easter eggs and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ Many of us might think Easter eggs and Easter egg hunts are a commercialized form of the Easter celebration But their roots are deeply embedded in the practices of early Christians in eastern cultures There is religious significance behind the Easter traditions that we still practice today Why do we have Easter eggs Although eggs were a symbol of fertility and rebirth in pagan cultures Easter eggs were used by early Christians to symbolize parts of the Easter story Easter eggs represent the empty tomb from which Jesus resurrected In early Orthodox churches Easter eggs were blessed by the priests and distributed to the congregants at the end of Paschal vigil which is the Saturday before Easter known as Holy Saturday In some denominations today Paschal 16 vigil is still observed where a service is held on Saturday morning or night The service is similar to a Christmas Eve service During the Paschal vigil Scripture is read candles are lit and baptisms take place During the service Easter eggs are handed out to symbolize Jesus resurrection The hard shell represents the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg represents Jesus resurrection from the dead While it might seem like a strange tradition to hand out Easter eggs in a church service early Christians abstained from eating eggs and meat during Lent a period of 40 days where Christians fast repent and pray to prepare for Easter Therefore Easter was the first time Christians could eat eggs As a symbol of Jesus tomb and resurrection Christians developed different traditions surrounding Easter eggs Why do we hunt for Easter eggs Early Christian missionaries hid Easter eggs painted with biblical scenes for children to find The children would find the Easter eggs and tell the story associated with the paintings Therefore early Easter egg hunts helped children learn about the significance of Easter One of the earliest Easter egg hunts that most resembles the modern Easter egg hunt can be traced to Martin Luther Martin Luther was a key leader in the Protestant Reformation During this time men would hide eggs for women and children to find The joy the women and children experienced as they found eggs mirrored the joy the women felt when they found Jesus tomb empty and realized He had risen Just like early Easter egg hunts we hide eggs for children to find For our modern Easter egg hunts we hide special goodies inside each egg Therefore when children open the Easter eggs to find their surprise inside they experience happiness and joy the same happiness and joy Jesus followers experienced when they heard the Good News of His resurrection Click Here to Donate through Amazon 17 17
