WWW SAOBSERVER COM NOVEMBER 25 2020 7 EDUCATION FILLED WITH HALF TRUTHS White Supremacist History is being Dismantled By Mario Marcel Salas One of the great challenges in the world is knowing enough about a subject to think you re right but not enough about the subject to know you re wrong Neil deGrasse Tyson Education is this country is filled with half truths omissions lies distortions and erasures People have been taught to look for quick answers to complicated questions and this is where trouble begins All complicated questions must be looked at from different disciplines in order to arrive at the best answer It is no different when talking about how education is controlled by white supremacist thought and how that control has robbed generations of the truth White supremacy has controlled the content in books used from elementary school to the university level Our educational system has been whitewashed and filled with outright denial of the contributions that blacks and people of color have made Women have been left out of the history books as well However white supremacy and gender denial is crumbling TV stations have blacks browns or Asians in the commercials and on the shows themselves Even though we have a long way to go blacks are on shows from comedy to news to soaps game shows talk shows TV series sports of all kinds documentaries history etc This must feel to a person without enough knowledge that their world is falling completely apart Blacks are in shows and movies like Star Trek Discovery the Good Doctor General Hospital Scandals and cartoons Blacks are taking a knee at sporting events and Black Lives Matter commercials are all over the place Education comes in many forms Racism was synchronized with the education system to control the presence of blacks Racist education was used to strip away the dignity of generations Education must be associated with actions not just in books but in our daily lives and public spaces which can take the form of naming streets or places after individuals like Katherine Johnson the great Apollo spacecraft mathematician Harriet Tubman Robert Williams Henrietta Lacks David Walker Nat Turner the Black Canary Islanders Ella Baker Fannie Lou Hamer Fred Hampton Oscar Micheaux John Robinson founder of Tuskegee Airman John Brown Langston Hughes Ida B Wells James Baldwin the black soldiers that fought for Santa Anna and many hundreds of others Education comes in academic settings and well as in life We learn from what we see on TV and read in the newspapers White supremacists taught us about European heroes and never heroes of color We were never taught about presidents that owned slaves and the truth about famous intellectuals whose brains were masticated with racism A new generation of educators is being trained to tell the truth Educators have a responsibility to uncover the lies that are touted as facts This is why African American Studies Mexican American Studies Ethnic Studies and Women s Studies are super important A new generation of learners and teachersquestion why black lives never mattered in this country They bring to light the millions of black refugees that had to leave the South to keep from being murdered and worked to death by racialized business and plantation owners after the Civil War We are learning about mass incarceration and educators committed to tell the entire story of the blacks who fought for the British against George Washington We live in a changing era that seeks to reeducate the population about the importance of the history of women blacks Hispanics and people of color in general The old white supremacist version of history is being dismantled everywhere and it is up to us to speed that process up

12 WWW SAOBSERVER COM NOVEMBER 25 2020 AMERICA S FATALLY FLAWED LEADER America s Fatally Flawed Leader By Doug Heath No one is p e r f e c t Chances are you know or have read about great leaders and their weaknesses From that you may conclude that perfection does not represent a trait attributed togreat leaders While some weaknesses can be overlooked fatal flaws often form such a strong negative impression that they cannot be ignored The blemishes can mean sudden death to a political career Ineffective leaders often leave their colleagues and constituents wanting more A successful leader has open and frequent communication with his or her team they do not avoid interactions with peers or subordinates and they work to develop personable relationships Unsuccessful leaders view work as a competition and colleagues as opponents The real challenge before us is not only to simply replace a fatally flawed leader but to also understand how to fix a system that produces promotes protects and even values the dangerous toxicity we see daily from our commander in chief As the originator of Trump University and The Art of the Deal many had huge expectations for Donald Trump s presidency Donald J Trump is a calculating and insatiable power hungry man There is nothing he is unwilling to do to get what he wants He represents the perfect capitalist This is the reason his followers are enthralled with him and his persona Their infatuation is the political result of reified consciousness By reified consciousness I mean that Trump s supporters do not perceive a moral world that requires an ideological justification for the president s blatant political perversities It is possible to glean valuable information from leaders whose methods seem plain wrong or ineffective One of the beautiful things about being human is our ability to learn from the mistakes of others Some leaders are completely regrettable while others have good intentions or unique abilities Still that does not mean we want them as our role models Leaders often fail when they gain a perception of unenthusiasm and passivity All one must do is consider Trump s reaction to the pandemic How else can anyone explain the thousands of deaths and the suffering of millions of American families This administrations unenthusiastic and passive response is the United States largest state sponsored murder since slavery Other traits of fatally flawed leaders include their unsureness about what the future holds decision making skills and their ability or lack thereof to delegate responsibility These characteristics can result in low levels of transparency and with 11 million government workers currently in America an administration that fails to communicate directly affects the efficiency with which the United States operates Some call it government gridlock I call it a lack of preparation and direction Leaders with fatal flaws talk down to everyone are rude abusive and insensitive The effects of this administration will linger for years as the needless deaths continue to mount Joe Biden will not be perfect but he is not fatally flawed REP BERNAL FIGHTS FOR SAISD AND ALL TEXAS CHILDREN S EDUCATION Rep Bernal fights for SAISD and all Texas children s education By Lena Lopez Parent SAISD Hello SAISD S Parents This week all of the SAISD children are out for the Thanksgiving Break which gives all the children and teachers a little break from the daily zoom It is also a time for any students who need to catch up on any missing assignments to complete them during their break I would like to let Parents know that most of our SAISD schools have passed out paperwork asking if you would like your children to be tested weekly for the virus I want to stress to all that you have to give them your permission to do the test This past week Representative Bernal wrote a letter to the head of TEA Mike Morath requesting that all STARR S testing be waived for this school year This letter also included 60 signatures from other Texas Representatives that work throughout our state see full idea that the next generation letter at saobserver com This may not be able to read or letter is just the first step in write is a thought that sickens trying to waive the STARRs all of us testing All this brings some Our children are still trying to good news for our teachers figure out why they need to and students but at the same wear a mask or why they are time it leaves them in limbo not able to see their friends for now The fact is until our or play outside Our children Rep Diego Bernal Texas Governor Abbott signs Photo Ballotpedia are confused because the new a letter waving this year s normal is one that has turned testing our teachers still have their world upside down So the question to tutor all of the students to prepare them now is will our Superintendent Martinez for the upcoming tests this December and write a letter asking for TEA to waive in March the STARR S testing for all our children At this point everyone is stuck trying to figure out what they need to do for our children This on top of having to deal with the pandemic which could create more adverse effects in our child s education I can think of many ideas that TEA could do with the over 90 million they spend annually to provide this one size fits all testing for instead more learning resources or mental health services The as Representative Bernal did Will Alicia Perry write a letter asking for TEA to waive STARR S testing as Representative Bernal dod We need to write letters and request to speak with Martinez and Perry via virtual meeting demanding an answer to this question Parents we must remember that we were living in a time when our teachers are overworked and the children are trying to keep up with their current lessons Lastly we need to remind SAISD and TEA that our children are our future leaders teachers judges and that they need a good education not just tutoring for a standardized testing We must remind them that they we re living in a world where we face many tragic events every day Parents we need to speak up for our children teachers and staff so that we can save them from this educational catastrophe Please remember that as we celebrate this upcoming Thanksgiving to be safe by wearing your mask washing your hands and limit your contact to those that live in your household I know that this hard to do but this could save our loved one s lives If any of my Parents have questions or concerns please email at lena lopez saobserver
