2022 Fearless! Community Impact Report

Page 1

Working together for a Hudson Valley free of violence in all its forms.2022REPORTCOMMUNITYIMPACTTen years ago, Anne Harris’s vibrant 20-year-old daughter, Alexis Olivia Harris, was senselessly beaten to death by her boyfriend, a person who was supposed to love her. No words can convey the pain of losing a child, but Anne has bravely channeled her anger, heartbreak, and trauma into helping others. Through her pain and grief, she has never wavered with her persistence and assurance that Alexis’s voice would always be heard. Throughout the past ten years, Anne has dedicated her life to raising awareness about domestic violence, the impact it has on communities, and where victims and survivors can find help. Every day she carries Alexis with her, not only in her heart and in her mind, but with the button adornment pinned to her purse as a tribute to her daughter - a life taken too soon.We would have given anything to meet Anne under dierent circumstances; nevertheless, she has profoundly changed our lives as a Fearless! friend and ally. Anne Harris, in memory of her daughter, Alexis Olivia Harris, has created a pathway to safety for many victims over the years and forever changed all the individuals she has come in contact with.

2“Sharing her story and bringing awareness to domestic violence has helped me heal. I hope her story will give others the courage to seek help and prevent another tragedy. I say her name, Alexis Olivia Harris, and all the other women who are silenced.” Anne Harris, Alexis’s Mother2020 Fearless! Hope Award Recipient“They say with time all things heal. Time for me has shifted my emotions — not healed them. The focus for me now is: what can be learned from this? I have learned that while time will move on, Alexis’ story can remain. If hearing her story can help one person, in a room full of people, to know they have the power to change their outcome — it is enough.”Christine Pagliaro, Alexis’s Friend2020 Fearless! 173LEADERFutureElena - Storm King School StudentCan you tell us about yourself?I initially took over the role of president for the Storm King School Intersectional Feminism Club (IFC) at the beginning of my sophomoreyear. At first, it started as 'just a club' I ran, but it quickly became a passion of mine. Leading this club helped me find what I would like to pursue and what I will ultimately be studying in college. Through IFC, I have had the pleasure of assisting Fearless! and being a part of all the wonderful things they do for women and families in need. How did you first become involved with Fearless! Hudson Valley? After researching local organizations to fundraise and collect donations for, I came across Fearless!. Knowing that some previous students from my school had led some donation drives to help out, I immediately knew I wanted to be part of the Fearless! community as well. What impact do you hope you will have on the community?I hope that everyone around me, especially my classmates, take my motivation and commitment to help as an example to help others. As for the people I helped through Fearless!, I hope all the Storm King School Intersectional Feminism Club does to help aects them in apositive way and helps them gain a better quality of life. What would you say to others your age about the importance of giving back?Giving back to organizations like Fearless! is one of the most rewarding experiences. Many of us are given privileges and opportunities that victims and survivors areoften denied, and we must use this privilege to help others and make theworld a better place for us all. What message would you share with potential future leaders? It is essential that in every leadership role we take on, we must do good to make our future brighter and better for everyone. What inspires you most about our work? I am most inspired by the type of people Fearless! Hudson Valley helps and how they inspire others to help aid these often-overlooked groups of people.SPOTLIGHTStorm King SchoolClass of 2023-Elena

7Throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month Fearless! Educators facilitatedmany prevention and awareness workshops, including Domestic Violence 101, filmscreening of Escalation, Intent vs. Impact, and In Her Shoes. Fearless! sta alsodisplayed our Clothesline Project at six locations across Orange and Sullivan Counties, to increase awareness about the impact of violence, celebrate the strength of survivors, and break the silence that often surrounds domestic violence. Over 600 t-shirts were created by survivors of intimate partner violence or by the friends or family members of victims. Facilitated by Licensed Art Therapists, participants learned how creativity can be used to process emotions, reduce stress, and boost personal growth! We thank Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, their members, and The Women & Children Fund for this wonderful experience!Your generosity and kindness ensured that our 2022 Adopt-a-Family Program was an immense success! With your help, Fearless! provided gifts for 528 children from 222 families, for a total of 750 people in Orange and Sullivan Counties. That's more than any year since our program began, and we thank each and every one of you for playing your part in making a dierence.During our School Supplies Drive, thousands of supplies were donated by our generous community to support children aected by violence. We thank everyone for their generosity in helping our students prepare for a successful school year. Fearless! DONOR9In lieu of gifts for her bridal shower, Lauren DeClue asked her friends and family to donate to Fearless! in celebration of her and her soon-to-be husband, Greg. With the help of her mother, Patricia, they raised over $1,800 to support our important work.
