It is perhaps as close to a perfect sport for people of all ages as you can get. But don’t take it from the millions who flock to their local courts to play this mishmash of tennis, ping pong, racquetball, and badminton in singles or doubles matches. The Appeal of Pickleball One of the main reasons pickleball has become so popular is its accessibility. The rules are simple and easy to learn, making it a great option for beginners. The game is played on a smaller court than tennis, which reduces the amount of running required and makes it less physically demanding. This is particularly appealing to older adults or those with limited mobility. Health Benefits Despite being less physically demanding than some other racquet sports, pickleball still offers a good workout. It helps improve cardiovascular health, balance, and coordination. The quick movements and fast-paced nature of the game also help to enhance reflexes and agility. Social Aspect Pickleball is not just about the physical activity; it’s also a very social sport. Players often form tight-knit communities, and the sport encourages interaction and camaraderie. Whether playing doubles or joining a pickleball league, participants have ample opportunities to meet new people and build friendships. Low Cost and Easy Setup Another factor contributing to pickleball’s growth is the low cost and ease of setup. The equipment needed is minimal – just a paddle, a ball, and a net. Many communities are converting existing tennis courts into pickleball courts, making it even more accessible. The affordability and simplicity of the game mean that people of all economic backgrounds can enjoy it. Competitive Play For those who crave competition, pickleball offers plenty of opportunities. Tournaments are held at local, national, and even international levels, drawing players of all skill levels. The sport’s governing bodies ensure that the competition remains fair and fun, with clear rules and organized events. Pickleball’s meteoric rise in popularity is no accident. Its combination of accessibility, health benefits, social interaction, low cost, and competitive opportunities makes it an ideal sport for people of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re looking for a fun way to stay active, meet new friends, or compete at a high level, pickleball has something to offer. So grab a paddle and join the millions who have discovered the joy of this unique and engaging sport. WHERE TO PLAY Check USA Pickleball’s “Places2Play” website at places2play.org to search for games and facilities by name, state and city. You can read what other players say about the locations and there is an interactive map showing places to play in your area. Illinois Seniors Journal • Fall 2024 11What is Medicare? Medicare is the federal health insurance program for: • People who are 65 or older • Certain younger people with disabilities • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, ESRD) What are the parts of Medicare? The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services: • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. • Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines). How does Medicare work? With Medicare, you have options in how you get your coverage. Once you enroll, you’ll need to decide how you’ll get your Medicare coverage. There are 2 main ways: • Original Medicare Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). You pay for services as you get them. When you get services, you’ll pay a deductible at the start of each year, and you usually pay 20% of the cost of the Medicare-approved service, called coinsurance. If you want drug coverage, you can add a separate drug plan (Part D). Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some Medigap policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. • Medicare Advantage Medicare Advantage is an “all in one” alternative to Original Medicare. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. Most plans offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover — like vision, hearing, dental, and more. Medicare Advantage Plans have yearly contracts with Medicare and must follow Medicare’s coverage rules. The plan must notify you about any changes before the start of the next enrollment year. • Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription drugs you need. To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a Medicare-approved plan that offers drug coverage (this includes Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage Plans with drug coverage). Each plan can vary in cost and specific drugs covered, but must give at least a standard level of coverage set by Medicare. Medicare drug coverage includes generic and brand-name drugs. Plans can vary the list of prescription drugs they cover (called a formulary) and how they place drugs into different "tiers" on their formularies. Plans have different monthly premiums. You’ll also have other costs throughout the year in a Medicare drug plan. How much you pay for each drug depends on which plan you choose. Important Medicare Dates To Remember... October 1st Start comparing your current coverage with other options. You may be able to save money or get extra benefits. Visit Medicare.gov/plan-compare. October 15th - December 7th Change your Medicare health or drug coverage for 2025, if you decide to. This includes changing to Original Medicare, or joining or changing a Medicare Advantage Plan. January 1st New coverage begins if you made a change. If you kept your existing coverage and your plan's costs or benefits changed, those changes also start on this date. January 1st - March 31st If you're in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch to Original Medicare (and join a separate Medicare drug plan) once during this time. Any changes you make will be effective the first of the month after the plan gets your request.YOUR GUIDE TO MEDICARE IN ILLINOIS DO YOU HAVE MORE QUESTIONS? Whether you’re ready to enroll in Medicare for the first time or have had Medicare coverage for years, Illinois’s Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program – MMAP – is here to help. MMAP is a free, unbiased service, not connected with any insurance company, that helps you understand your Medicare benefits. MMAP is also part of a nationwide network called the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) – a primary resource for personalized Medicare counseling throughout the country. Call 1-800-252-8966 to get help with your Medicare and Medicaid questions and get the answers you need about your health care options. If you need assistance, you can contact the Illinois Department on Aging or visit their website for more information on MMAP services.

12 Illinois Seniors Journal • Fall 2024by Brian Christopher There’s a time and a place for everything and every type of travel experience. Going solo on a trip to Europe or alone on an Alaskan cruise is a good fit for young couples or individual travelers with wanderlust. But for those looking to see the sights, savor the essence of strange lands and truly experience foreign cities are best served to go with a group led by a professional. Erik Hall, the owner/operator of Noble Frog Tours, spent more than 30 years working with a professor at Macomb Community College to coordinate trips to London. Hall also worked for a bus company to coordinate group trips around the state, and he worked in AAA’s group travel division for six states in the Midwest. “Wherever you go, do some research about the area, especially if you have some time on your own,” Hall said. “No matter where you go, (the time) it just flies by. It doesn’t stand still for anything, and you can never do everything you want to do. You’ll see it, but you won’t experience it. I think that’s important with travel — the experience.” This summer, Hall took a group of 21 travelers over age 50 to London where he shared much of what he’s learned about the city over the years. Every tour is as unique as every group of travelers, but Hall said he has found success by building an experience that provides a framework with some must-see highlights and off-the-beaten-path spots interspersed with optional to explore individual pursuits. Hall founded Noble Frog Tours after the professor he worked with all those years retired during the COVID-19 period. Hall took a trip with the professor back in 1986 and eventually started working with the professor to host the tours. Noble Frog has two more London tours planned for 2025: one in May, and one around Christmastime in December. “I guess I would say it’s a really smart way to go,” said Dina Spoerl, 51, who grew up in Detroit but now lives in Winnetka, Illinois, just north of Chicago. “I don’t know what all group tours are like, but as far as this trip is concerned, you have your own space and time to do the things you want to do. It’s not so structured. A group trip of this nature is really good because all of the hard stuff is taken care of. All you have to do is enjoy what the presentations are, and enjoy the structured things, and then have the opportunity to do stuff yourself as well. It’s a real comfort-level situation.” Leslie Tolstyka, 63, of Warren, Michigan, has traveled with Hall and the group from MCC many times. “He’s a great communicator. He’s very knowledgeable. When we’re walking around, he’s got a lot of information about the area and certain things around the London area, inside and outside of London.” Guided tours outshine solo adventures, deliver enriched experiences

Illinois Seniors Journal • Fall 2024 13Tolstyka said touring with a diverse group of people adds to the experience. “I think your best bet is to go with a group. People come from all over the place, socioeconomic statuses, educational levels. You just kind of join up and go and do some other things, in addition to the things that are planned,” Tolstyka said. Going with an expert tour leader is critical for those looking to make the most out of their time abroad. “If you try to go by yourself or with your family, they’re not as knowledgeable of the things you want to do. There’s so many other things that are more interesting when you’re with a group,” Tolstyka said. Regardless of the group, its size or destination, Hall, who just turned 56, said there are many things for seniors to consider when planning a trip abroad. “Europe is definitely a good place for seniors to go,” Hall said. “The only drawback as I see it is Europe is an old place. A lot of places are protected. There are a lot of uneven walkways. That’s one of the things I’ve found over the years, and getting older myself, you could probably twist an ankle fairly easily if you’re not looking out.” He said cruises are also great touring destinations for seniors because you can really go at your own pace when the ship sets sail and docks in port. “You don’t need to pack and unpack, like if you were on a tour somewhere. The cruise ships take you where you want to go, and you’re seeing multiple destinations. I would recommend that an Alaskan cruise would be the way to go,” Hall said. Travel insurance is something Hall said he recommends to protect yourself and your investment in a travel experience. “Most health insurance doesn’t carry over outside of the U.S. Travel insurance helps cover that,” Hall said. “If you need medical treatment for something relatively small, or you could get hit by a bus, it’s horrible. (Insurance) costs money, but it’s some security that you’ll have.” Hall said traveling with a companion not only adds a level of security, but it gives you someone with whom to share memories that will last a lifetime. “It’s always good to have someone you can rely on to travel with,” Hall said. “It makes it more enjoyable. Here are a few more tips for those in their golden years interested in touring with Noble Frog, or any group headed for adventure abroad: • Stay hydrated. “Hydration is a big thing, especially as you get older,” Hall said. “Planes will dry you out. Traveling will just dry you out, especially if you’re on a bus. Bring a thermos with you. Even if you can’t take liquid on the plane, at least bring the container with you so you can fill it up later and stay hydrated.” • Be in the time zone you’re in. “Try to get to whatever time zone you might be in. When I go to Europe, I fly overnight, but it’s usually only a seven-hour flight. If you can, try to sleep, even if it’s just a hard nap. And then, when you check in, take a nap for an hour or two, go out, get dinner, and try to stay up until your normal time,” Hall said. “Don’t look at the clock and say, ‘Oh, it’s 5 o’clock here, back home it’s noon.’ You need to have your body realize this is where you’re at. This is the time zone you’re in.” • Check about vaccinations, prepare your prescriptions. “There are some places you need to take vaccinations for. It’s best to do some research on your own. Definitely check with your doctor, or a pharmacist. They’ll be on top of that for you, too. Sometimes, there are things you need to do a few months in advance,” Hall said. “(For prescriptions) they recommend you take your medication in the bottle with the label on it. You may want to have the bottles with you. Ask your pharmacist for a smaller bottle. Some people don’t want to have it in a carry-on, but luggage gets lost all the time. You’ve got to keep that in mind.” To learn more about Noble Frog Tours, call Erik Hall at (586) 551-0448, email him at noblefrogtours@gmail.com or go to noblefrogtours.com. Ah, yes! After a long career full of years spent toiling to earn a living, cobble together a nestegg and buy all the things you need or make you happy, it’s time to relax and let your retirement savings and Social Security do its stuff. But wait. Refining your strategy for deploying those resources is certainly worthy of your time and consideration. And patience is a virtue — one that could pay off with in the long run through bigger checks every month. “If they go on early Social Security at 62, they’re going to take a 30% reduction in Social Security benefits, and that’s permanent,” said Art Reaume, the owner of Reaume Benefits Advisors/Medicare Choices. “You can go for your full Social Security when you reach that age bracket. If they opt not to take Social Security then, once in a while people do, I believe it’s (up to) 8% they get for not going on it for that time.” By age 70, the experts say you’re maxed out. There’s no benefit in delaying it any longer. But there are things you can do before that to beef-up your benefit amount. According to the Social Security Administration, benefits are based on “your lifetime earnings,” adjusted for “changes in average wages since the year the earnings were received.” The average of these adjusted earnings is calculated for your 35 highest earning years. Working for at least 35 years is one way to make sure you get the most out of Social Security. You only need to work 10 years to qualify for benefits, having fewer than 35 years of work at the time you apply can lower your benefit amount because, according to the Social Security Administration, “Years with no earnings count as zeroes in the benefit calculation.” Your maximum benefit depends on the age you retire, according to the government’s response to a “frequently asked question” posted on SSA.gov in January 2024. Those who retire at their calculated full retirement age in 2024 are eligible to receive a maximum benefit of $3,822. Those who retire early at age 62 are eligible for a maximum benefit of $2,710. Those who delay drawing benefits until the ripe old age of 70 are eligible for a maximum monthly What to expect when you’re expecting your Social Security

Again, those are maximum numbers, and individual calculations are based on lifetime earnings. Social Security has historically offered automatic cost-of-living adjustments “to ensure that the purchasing power of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits is not eroded by inflation,” according to SSA.gov. COLAs are based on the percentage increase in the consumer price index for urban wage and clerical workers for the third quarter of the last year the previous adjustment was determined to the third quarter of the current year. No increase means no COLA. Given the recent rise in inflation, a 3.2% adjustment was made payable through benefits beginning in January 2024. Given the direct impact of Social Security on the retirement picture and standard of living for millions of Americans, the importance of maximizing these benefits — and others — cannot be understated. By law, employees of the Social Security Administration are not allowed to give advice. Instead, consult with a benefits planner or a financial advisor to ensure your retirement income, health benefits and savings are in order. Illinois Seniors Journal • Fall 2024 17Ending Senior Isolation One Meal at a Time with DSCC/KSCSenior isolation is a growing concern, with far-reaching implications for the physical and mental health of older adults. According to the National Institute on Aging, nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered socially isolated, which can lead to increased risks of dementia, heart disease, and stroke. DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) and Kane Senior Council (KSC) are dedicated to combating this issue one meal at a time. Through their community dining, home-delivered meals (Meals on Wheels), and Senior Dine Programs, DSCC and KSC are making a significant impact on the lives of seniors in DuPage and Kane Counties. Community Dining: Building Connections and Providing Nutrition The Community Dining program focuses on reducing senior isolation. These events hosted at local community centers provide a nutritious meal and a welcoming place where seniors can gather, share stories, and build lasting friendships. The meals are created specifically for seniors and the program includes a variety of social activities for seniors to participate in. The seniors participating in community dining experience a sense of belonging and purpose, which is crucial for mental and emotional well-being. The interactions and connections made during these meals help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation and help promote overall health and happiness. Home-Delivered Meals: Reaching Seniors Where They Are For many seniors, mobility issues and other constraints can keep them from attending community dining events. For them, DSCC and KSC's home-delivered meals program is a lifeline. Volunteers deliver balanced meals directly to seniors' homes and provide much-needed interaction and a well-being check. The home-delivered meal program provides a critical connection to the community for homebound seniors. These visits help combat isolation and offer a sense of security for the seniors and their loved ones knowing that someone is checking in on them regularly. The program also helps build important connections between the community and seniors. Senior Dine Program: Partnering with the Community The Senior Dine Program is another innovative approach by DSCC and KSC to combat senior isolation. Through partnerships with local restaurants, active seniors can enjoy meals in a social setting outside of their homes. Participating restaurants provide a welcoming environment where seniors can dine with others and build social connections. When dining out, seniors engage with the broader community, enjoy new experiences, and maintain their social skills. The Senior Dine Program combines good food with good company, reinforcing the importance of social interaction in maintaining overall health. Local restaurants benefit as well, by connecting with the senior population and increasing their support and visibility within the community. Get Involved DSCC and KSC are committed to ending senior isolation through these vital programs. Community Dining, Home-Delivered Meals, and the Senior Dine Program are making a profound difference in the lives of seniors. Volunteering with DSCC and KSC helps combat senior isolation and also offers numerous benefits for the volunteers. It's an opportunity to give back to those who have served our communities in the past, to show appreciation and respect to our elders, and to experience the rewarding feeling of making a real difference. For more information about these programs and to express interest in volunteering, visit our websites at www.dupageseniorcouncil.org and www.kaneseniorcouncil.org. Join us in this vital mission and help create a community where no senior feels alone.

20 Illinois Seniors Journal • Fall 2024Fall 2024 Guide for Senior Housing OptionsAssisted Living Assisted living is a residential option for older adults who need help with some of the activities of daily living—things like cooking meals, getting to the bathroom in the middle of the night, keeping house, and traveling to appointments. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you need more personal care services than you can get at home or in an independent living or retirement community. Skilled Nursing Skilled nursing care refers to a patient’s need for care or treatment that can only be performed by licensed nurses. This type of care is usually offered in hospitals, Life Plan Communities, nursing homes and other certified locations. Skilled nursing communities must meet strict criteria and are subject to periodic inspections to ensure quality standards are being met. Hospice Care Hospice (and palliative) care offers a dignified and comfortable alternative to spending your final months in the impersonal environment of a hospital, far from family, friends, pets, and all that you know and love. Palliative medicine helps you manage pain while hospice provides special care to improve the quality of life for both you as the patient and your family. We hope you find the Fall 2024 edition of our Senior Housing Guide for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake and Mchenry Counties helpful. The facilities are grouped by county, sorted alphabetically by city and then, by name. Each provides a variety of services and offers a range of amenities. We encourage you to contact them directly to learn more. For your convenience, we have grouped each County’s listings into these three categories: If you’d like your Senior Care Facility listed in the Guide, please contact us.★ = SEE AD FOR DETAILS I = INDEPENDENT LIVING
