International Department of Women Church of God in Christ | Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis, General Supervisor | Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishop4 Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1EXTREME MEASURES FOR THE WORK AT HAND:WE GOT WORK TO DOThe highlight of every Women’s International Convention of the Church of God in Christ is the Tuesday Night Keynote Address of the Convention President and General Supervisor, Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis. Filled with nuggets of wisdom, personal anecdotes, powerful scriptures, and instruction for her daughters, Mother Lewis’s address on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, did not disappoint but demonstrated her consistent anointing and God-given ability to speak to women of all ages. After recognizing and celebrating her team, supporters, attendees, and family, Mother Lewis was poised, elegantly attired in a beautiful, white suit, ready to pour from her heart to an audience of thousands gathered in the Cypress Ballroom of the Orlando World Marriott Convention Center and countless viewers online.Mother Lewis chose the topic “Extreme Measures for the Work at Hand,” brilliantly illuminating the 2024 theme for the Church of God in Christ “We’ve Got Work to Do.” Using II Samuel 21:10 and Ephesians 2:10 as scriptures of emphasis, Mother Lewis’s introduction crystallized the gravity of our times and the signicance of the work to be done.“Individuals around us are dying everyday…on their way to a place called hell if they do not have Christ in their lives, some of our own family members, neighbors, co-workers.”After citing the many devices of evil plaguing society and presenting extreme challenges, Mother Lewis quickly and deftly centered her listeners focus on Jesus, presenting Him as superlative to and sucient for the challenges. She framed the commission for all believers and outlined prayer and reliance on God’s Spirit as strategic components for victory.“Our approach in reaching the lost must be laced with prayers, much prayer. We must be purposeful and strategic which comes through discernment given by the power of the Holy Ghost.”Following this introduction, Mother Lewis began to expound on the story of Rizpah, an example of a woman who employed extreme measures in the face of unimaginable hardship. “Rizpah provides for us this tragic story of a woman who had to resort to extreme measures.” Mother Lewis introduced this Old Testament heroine as the concubine of King Saul and mother of two sons whose lives were tragically taken in retribution for their father’s violation of a treaty between ancient Israel and the Gibeonites.“She stayed there until something was done. Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1 5International Department of Women Church of God in Christ | Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis, General Supervisor | Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishopuntil the rains of October. Was almost six months later…his woman did not go home. She stayed there on a rock…but she was on a mission…I will not leave the bodies of my dead sons until they have a decent burial.”Adeptly guiding her listeners through the intricacies of Rizpah’s story and making connects to their personal hardships, Mother Lewis illustrated the often-unfathomable challenges that underscore the lives of women even within the Church of God in Christ. Reminding her daughters with a resounding tone, “Women of God…in this day and time, we must hold fast to the principles of holiness and righteous living, without compromise. When our convictions stand up and speak out to what is not right, it very often requires extreme measures for the work at hand.”Here she also took time to remind her daughters of the mission, challenging the audience to uphold God’s standard and their identity as women of the Church of God in Christ.“For almost seventy-ve years, the mission of the women of the Church of God in Christ has been world evangelism – better homes, better schools, better communities for a better world. Yes, we have much work to do. We are God’s ambassadors. ere is much required of us. We are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. We are the holy women, the sanctied women. We are women of the Church of God in Christ. We’re not alone. We have the power of the Holy Ghost living on the inside.”Mother Lewis then employed a deeply personal tone and shared examples from her own life that illustrated the extreme measures she witnessed and employed in her life of faith. Perhaps one of the most compelling parts of her message, these stories were met with laughter, hand claps, head nods, and knowing glances from the audience and many reactions from the virtual audience in the chat messaging box. Especially memorable

International Department of Women Church of God in Christ | Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis, General Supervisor | Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishop6 Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1was the moment when Mother Lewis held up a large bottle of vegetable oil, commonly used in the houses of saints as blessed oil.“How many of you know what this is? My daddy had a great big bottle and when we had any kind of illness, he poured this bottle and slapped it on my head, prayed the prayer of faith. And sure enough when I woke up in the morning, I was healed. ey trusted and their faith was in God.”Recounting her own struggle with infertility, her son’s struggle with asthma and more, her faith building personal stories punctuated her message with authenticity and demonstrated God’s dynamic power in the lives of His people.“ose are just some of the few testimonies that I have. ey sound strange and unlikely and uncommon. But I tell you if you just put your trust in God, if you walk by faith and not by sight, God is healer. He is a deliverer. He can turn your life around…Women of God with all of the work we have to do, let’s go back to putting everything in the hand of God.”Next, for mothers, grandparents, husbands, widows, young women, parents of toddlers and teens, ministry leaders, single moms and more, Mother Lewis provided a master class in instruction, communicating in an incredibly eective manner so many practical insights and keen wisdom. Considering the broad spectrum within her in person and virtual audience, she oered instructions and powerful encouragement for all ages levels, with an emphasis on strengthening and supporting the family unit.“Early in the morning, before school, get the blessed oil and anoint your children…pray the prayer of faith…plead the blood of Jesus all day long…cast the devil out of the mind”In her conclusion, Mother Lewis focused attention on all her spiritual daughters and shared powerful advice from a mother’s heart. “Finally, women, don’t forget about you…take extreme measures, exceeding the ordinary, surpassing the usual regulated expectations. Take care of you. With all the work that’s tasked to your hand, put your mask on rst…We’ve got much work to do…and it starts with you…extreme measures for the work at hand”Following this powerful and profound message rich with wisdom, insight and deep spiritual understanding, Mother Lewis invited women to come to receive more at the altar. Many came forward and were met by the outpour of the Holy Ghost.

Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1 7International Department of Women Church of God in Christ | Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis, General Supervisor | Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding BishopOn Friday, May 31, 2024, Presiding Bishop J. Drew Sheard shared a powerful message for the concluding service of the 74th Women’s International Convention in Orlando, Florida. e capstone on a week of incredible and dynamic worship experiences, Bishop Sheard’s message, “e Urgency of Preparation,” challenged the church and uncovered the many pitfalls preventing God’s move in the church and in the lives of His people. With his signature style, boldly tackling signicant issues related to the body of Christ, Bishop Sheard turned the revealing light of examination on the church. Choosing a text from II Chronicles 29:16-17, he shared the story of King Hezekiah’s instruction to the priests and Levites to sanctify themselves and cleanse the temple. Citing the eight-day timeframe in which the priests and Levites proceeded to follow King Hezekiah’s commands, Bishop Sheard highlighted their urgency in obedience as an example from which the church can learn powerful lessons. “Our approach to ministry has been drastically altered . . . one of the things that bothers me the most is that after all we’ve been through, especially the pandemic, our commitment to God is subpar. erefore, I believe we must seek God with urgency in order to obtain his favor.”Cutting to the heart of the issues, Bishop Sheard minced no words when describing the church’s current condition. Much like that of ancient Israel at the time of King Hezekiah, Bishop Sheard’s assessment of the church revealed a desperate need for spiritual repair. “We’re in horrible condition and something must be done…Sometimes it seems like the saints do not care what they say or do . . . Consequently…we are falling for everything and standing for nothing.”Among the evidence Bishop Sheard presented as indicative of the urgent need for change included “the indierence of God’s people in regards to holiness…a chilling ignorance that is invading the church…people of God are so intoxicated by the world.”“We’re putting up with stu that the old saints never would have put up with. Jesus never told you to manage the behavior of demon…Jesus told us to cast the devil out.”To further illustrate the urgent and dire status of the Body of believers, Bishop Sheard urged listeners to recognize that God desires that we seek him and become the church that He has designed us to display to the world.“We’re in trouble. Dying men are daily descending to the tombs of hell…We’re the ones who are THE URGENCY OF PREPARATION74th Women’s International Convention Ofcial AddressBishop J. Bishop Sheard leaned on and uplifted the practices of the old church as a pathway leading to revival with special emphasis on the power of prayer.“Modernization is not working, but we need to pray until we get another Pentecost. We need a revival. We need an awakening. We need miracles to be performed.”In addition, Bishop Sheard outlined a path forward for the church that would prepare the way for revival to take place. Providing three distinct steps, he passionately shared that the church “must repent…there must be a spirit of deep humiliation…we must mourn our departure from God.”“We must repent. Lament our backsliding, rend our hearts, repair to the blood of atonement that our deep stained sins may be washed away…we must sincerely desire a revival.”Finally, in his conclusion, Bishop Sheard encouraged the church not to give up but to seek the Lord for revival with urgency and condence that God would hear our prayers and remember His promises.“Church of God in Christ, don’t give up now because God made us a promise!”

International Department of Women Church of God in Christ | Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis, General Supervisor | Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishop14 Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1DETERMINED FAITHWhat makes Women’s Day at the Holy Convocation so special is not simply the spiritual sisterhood, the beautiful display of “white only” fashion, nor the women-led worship experience, but the Word of God received from General Supervisor Mother Dr. Barbara McCoo Lewis. For those privileged to gather at the 115th Holy Convocation of the Church of God in Christ in Memphis, TN, and the many able to view online, the message presented on Friday, November 10, 2023, provided a powerful unveiling of a familiar biblical story.Prepared to not only deliver the word, but also to appoint new Supervisors, Assistant Supervisors, and National Evangelists, Mother Lewis donned her ceremonial habit and accompanying cap and approached the podium in a saintly manner and sacred dignity.Choosing a passage from Mark 5:25-34, Mother Lewis directed her listeners to the familiar story of the Woman with the Issue of Blood and proceeded to unfold profound and timeless truths for every believer. “Determined Faith” was the message title, and with the passion of her Spirit-lled delivery, the audience could sense not only her biblical understanding of this text and but also her lived experience of determined faith.“Determined faith is decisive, its purposeful, single-minded, it’s resolute. Determined faith acknowledges God as the supreme, preeminent being in your life. You are completely God-centered and God-controlled…Your life is full of expectation. It’s full of hope. You trust God for everything.”While many have preached about the story of the Woman with the Issue of Blood, Mother Lewis’s message brought fresh insights that highlighted 115th Holy ConvocationWomen’s Day AddressMother Barbara McCoo Lewis Convention President and General Supervisor

Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1 15International Department of Women Church of God in Christ | Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis, General Supervisor | Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishopthe power of this woman’s faith. She began by situating this woman’s plight in context, describing the desperate nature of her situation.“Our text presents us today, an unnamed woman…just the fact that she had a debilitating disease which caused her to hemorrhage for 12 long years. She had spent all of her money with doctors…the implications suggest some had been dishonest or perhaps had treated her unfairly…she was not cured, deemed ceremonially unclean…is prohibited her from even being seen in public places.”Next, Mother Lewis brought listeners to the critical ways in which this woman’s issue had disrupted her life. By peeling back the layers of this woman’s story, Mother Lewis helped the audience to make the connection between the extremity of her situation and the miraculous transformation she experienced through faith in Christ. “She had lost her identity, no relationship or sense of community for 12 long years. But she heard about Jesus. She heard about His power to heal, and immediately she developed a strategy. If I can just touch the hem of his garment, I know I’ll be made whole.”Both as a personal challenge and collective invitation, Mother Lewis posed a poignant question to the women of the Church of God in Christ. “What do you need from God today?” Proceeding to describe how this woman’s faith propelled her into action, Mother Lewis’s inquiry provided an opportunity for personal reection and examination of individual faith.“First of all she positioned herself…she went where she was behind Him. How have you positioned yourself, women of God? What is your plan? What is your mission?”Powerfully weaving the connection between this woman’s struggle and the struggles confronting women in her audience, Mother Lewis’s Spirit-infused message tugged at hearts and called women out of places of bondage and shame.“You’re sitting down by the wayside waiting for things to happen. Let me be clear. God won’t move until you do your part. It’s called action. You’ve got to get up and do something, do anything, do everything you can. If you don’t nothing is going to happen.”Continuing the story of this woman’s faith, Mother Lewis brought to light the signicance 115th Holy Convocation Women’s Day Address

Page 16

Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishop16 Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1of her faith-lled actions. She highlighted this woman’s courage in the face of what were previously insurmountable barriers before she heard about Jesus. “is woman deed all rules of protocol…She was unclean, physically weak, but she had a plan…What you want, women of God, is in the press…When you want God to do something for you, you’ve got to get out there and get into the press.”Disclosing the results of her faith, Mother Lewis made clear the necessity of faith in our relationship with God. “What got Jesus’s attention was her faith. at’s what gets God’s attention, is your faith.” roughout the message, Mother Lewis had been guiding women to make a connection with the story of this biblical woman and the issues within their own lives. But perhaps where this was most passionately shared was when she poured out her heart for her listeners who were dealing with issues on the emotional level.“O Lord, stop the emotional bleeding of the women of God. Some of you fall apart over misfortune and despair. You succumb to rumors. You lock yourself in the house because of your haters and jealousy and envy and rejections and low self-esteem. You’ve been victimized and sabotaged, plots and schemes. Lord, stop the bleeding. Get up now and be what God has called you to be.”As this powerful Word from the Lord came to its conclusion, Mother Lewis led the entire audience in a unique illustration of the active faith of the Woman with the Issue of Blood. Asking each woman to touch the hem of another woman’s outt, Mother Lewis sealed the actions of faith that led to deliverance on the hearts and minds of her spiritual daughters.“Neighbor, to symbolize the power of God, I’m going to touch your hem. When I touch your hem that miracle is coming your way. When I touch your hem, deliverance is coming your way…all that you’ve been crying in the midnight hour for, God’s going to do it for you. Now touch their hem”

In a world where commitment, dedication, genuine service, and support are often hard to nd, we have one among us who has gone beyond the call of duty to serve others with the “Heart of a Servant Leader.” Dr. Grace Davis Harris has come from meager beginnings and soared to superior heights in the educational, corporate, civic, and ecumenical elds. She earned a doctorate degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Harris has spent countless years educating, supporting, and advocating for young people who may have had problematic and dysfunctional family dynamics. Her personal story alone is one of triumph and personal victory.Dr. Harris’ success did not come without struggle. She encountered many obstacles along the way. As a young child, she became a product of the Foster Care System, where she spent much of her young life in the homes of individuals who were not biologically connected to her. Young Grace was a studious, bright young lady who excelled in her academics. One day, as a teen, Grace was placed in the home of a lady who served in the Church of God in Christ … Mother Pearlie B. Magee. ere, she found favor in a loving home and went on to accomplish great things in life, which included her Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and Doctoral degree. Her tenure at Waukesha Area Technical College and the Milwaukee Area Technical College as an Educational Psychologist endeared her to both students and faculty. Her focus in life has been investing in young people to aect a change in the trajectory of their lives. As a result, she founded the Diamond Cover Girls. A ministry that mentors and invests in the lives of teens and young adult women. In 2003, Dr. Harris began serving as the jurisdictional supervisor of the Wisconsin Northwest Jurisdiction. She served with the late Bishop Adolphus Allen and currently serves with General Board Member Bishop C. H. McClelland. Mother Harris has been blessed to minister across the country and was privileged to have been selected as one of the keynote speakers during the 2013 Women’s International Convention hosted in Orlando, Florida. Many of us still have a “few pounds” that we would like to lose, and others deal with health conditions that arise from being overweight. So, let’s talk about diet, nutrition, exercise, and weight loss.Few would argue the benets of healthy weight loss. Let’s list some facts:Losing 5-10 % of your body weight is a good place to begin your journey. • Studies have shown that a 5-10% weight loss will lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol.• A 3-5% loss will reduce the risk of heart disease.• High blood pressure is twice as prevalent in obesity.• Chances of knee pain grows with extra weight. Arthritis risk increases by approximately 10% for every two pounds of weight gain.• More weight equates to less muscle mass in seniors and thus increases the risk of falls and bone fractures.• Being overweight boosts the risk of untimely death and serious complications during surgery.Elder Christopher Mark Allen, MDPROSPER AND BE IN GOD HEALTH(MOTHER HARRIS CELEBRATION continued)

Comorbid health conditions present prior to surgery, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea, are often reduced and under better control after Bariatric surgery.OTHER METHODS OF WEIGHT LOSSLifestyle ModicationHow do we get to a more appropriate weight for our height and frame? Foremost on the list is diet: 45–65% should come from carbs, 20–35% from fat, and10–35% from protein. Your diet should include a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables, legumes like lentils and beans, nuts, and whole grains like unprocessed maize, millet, oats, wheat, and brown rice. Dairy or non-dairy alternatives provide calcium. Use healthy fats like vegetable oils and spreads, oily sh, and avocados. Avoid highly processed foods such as rened grains, sugar, and salt. Limit red and processed meats, alcohol and trans fats.Common sense weight loss methods should include eating slowly, hydration, proper sleep, reducing stress, portion control/smaller plates, and nutrition counseling.Exerciseere are several types and methods of exercise that promote weight loss. Exercise can be tailored and modied for individual needs, goals, and abilities. Aerobic exercise, including running, swimming, or walking at least three times per week for at least 20 minutes, benets the heart. Aerobics for more than 20 minutes will lead to weight loss. Strength training uses resistance to build muscle, helps to burn more fat, and keeps weight o. Strength training is recommended 3–5 times per week for about an hour.High-intensity interval training uses bursts of intense cardio workouts to increase heart rate, followed by a short rest. Another form of exercise includes yoga, which lowers stress by low-impact exercise.(continued on p. 20)

Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishop20 Fall 2024 | Volume 14, Issue 1MEDICATION-ASSISTED WEIGHT LOSSPrescription weight-loss medications are an additional tool and should be combined with lifestyle modications. Some of these meds control appetite by giving a sense of fullness. Others change how dietary fat is absorbed into the body, while some others decrease insulin resistance. Patients on these medications see an average weight loss of 10% of their body weight within six months.Popular now are diabetes medications, which work on specic body receptors and control blood sugar by increasing insulin release and decreasing desire for food. e result is a greater sense of fullness, leading to weight loss. Some of these medications may require a shot every day or every week. ese medications are called GLP1-agonists: Mounjaro, Ozempic, Victoza, Trulicity. Another type of diabetes medication called SLT2-inhibitors helps people lose weight by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose. ose medications include Farxiga, Jardiance, and Invokana. In summary, proper diet and exercise should be combined with medical, surgical, or natural weight loss management. e weight loss journey begins with simple steps. Consider keeping a food diary. It will give you a history of your food intake. Also, consider getting help from a nutritionist. Add exercise and do so under physician supervision if you have a serious medical condition. Remember that slow but steady is the goal for weight loss.Dr. Sims is a native of Stockton, California.
