WHAT IS THE BUSINESS PLAN It s amazing how many people just get an idea and then go off looking for funds It doesn t work that way Foundations are looking for nonprofits that are already up and running well Grants are meant to supplement a nonprofit s resources not to fully fund it Are you clear about your purpose Do you have a compelling mission statement Your mission should be unique and specify what you plan to accomplish Foundations will not fund organizations that duplicate or overlap similar services in their particular geographic area Your mission must also be doable Just saving the world won t work Do you have capable leadership You need qualified staff and an active board An experienced CEO and a supportive board that is willing to fundraise are hallmarks of strong nonprofits Do you have relevant programs with a good reputation for service delivery How are your programs different than other nonprofits working in the same area Can you demonstrate that your programs make a difference for those you serve Are your clients satisfied Do you have an efficient operation and good support systems such as enthusiastic volunteers transportation if needed and enough staff to handle your clients Can you deliver on your promises Does your nonprofit plan and evaluate on a regular basis Do you have a longrange plan Do you evaluate your programs to see if they are working Do you have adequate facilities This includes basic physical facilities but also technical ones Do you have an updated computer system Financial tracking abilities You need to have the tools to function well Are your finances stable and do you have diverse revenue streams Foundations want to be reassured that you don t have all of your eggs in one basket especially theirs A foundation grant is not a solution for bailing your organization out of a financial mess Do you have a track record Measure the results of your programs so that you can point to verifiable results Seek out other nonprofits to collaborate on the project you propose to a foundation Collect letters of support from community leaders and organizations MASTERCLASS
How much of your budget should be spent on fundraising Watchdog groups such as Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau recommend amounts from a low of 15 percent to 35 percent There is no firm figure but the IRS will see your income and expenses when you file your annual 990 tax form and will expect that a good portion of what you spend goes to your programs not executive salaries or perks In other words most of your expenses should be spent on doing what you were founded to do Nonprofits can use these 6 Main Funding Sources to help fulfill their mission 1 Individual Donations 2 Grants 3 Corporate Sponsorships 4 Membership Fees 5 Selling Goods and Services 6 In kind Donations Write the vision the Business Plan 2 And the Lord answered me and said Write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he may run that readeth it 3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time but at the end it shall speak and not lie though it tarry wait for it because it will surely come it will not tarry Habakkuk 2 2 3 kjv Before starting to write your nonprofit business plan it s smart to do some more market research additional to the one you ve already done in your needs analysis and when determining your target population For example if you re opening a literacyfocused nonprofit that you believe will address the need of local young people you ll want to understand how many schools are in the area how many families are in your community and how many of them have access to a computer at home A good nonprofit business plan sets up a roadmap for the next three to five years of your work Regardless of your size or financial status your nonprofit business plan will effectively create a blueprint for how your nonprofit will be run who will be responsible for what and how you plan to achieve your goals Good people are key to running a successful nonprofit organization You ll need to find partners who share the zest for your mission Creating a reliable leadership structure and a network composed of passionate committed individuals is the only way to ensure that your nonprofit organization will thrive MASTERCLASS
Let s look at three key groups of people for any nonprofit Hiring great Board members is one of the most important processes for a new nonprofit Your Board will ultimately be responsible for regulatory compliance strategic decision making supporting everyday operations making hires and a wide range of similar tasks Think about what knowledge skills abilities and other characteristics must a candidate have to be the ideal executive director for your nonprofit and which of those characteristics matter most to you Anyone you ask to be part of the Board will want to know what s expected of them from the start so you should begin by deciding whether you want your Board to be a hands on supporting group that guides your organization i e a working Board or do you want the board to more consult and advise i e a governing Board Note Board members cannot be paid You will be required to declare this in your bylaws and 1023 Application A founder can get paid if acting in a staff role such as Director or President If they are on paid staff they can only be on the board as a non voting member So now that you ve made sure you have everything you need with the plan in place to run your nonprofit and raise money without getting into legal trouble You are ready to create your fundraiser and apply for grants so you can grow your nonprofit and your impact Plan your Annual Fundraiser for your nonprofit so that you can have predictable funding for your program every year and never have to worry about having to pay for everything out of pocket Finally apply for grants so that your nonprofit doesn t have to fail because of lack of funding MASTERCLASS
