high school and then added elementary school and middle school to complete the process of Catholic education all in the same location This was then ready for beginning early education and for all that wanted to come back to school to be educated after having to leave the learning process for unexpected circumstance even offering Saturday classes for those that worked Pope John Paul ll had a deeper impression on Father Mirek as a priest being the first non Italian Pope in 455 years and the first from a Slavic country Pope John Paul s faith openness and his many inspirational vocations during his time led Father Mirek to his greatest inspiration on May 18 2003 when he received a blessing and was able to attend a visit in Rome to attend a special Canonization of four Saints in St Peter s Square The first Patron of The Parish of St Ursula Ledochowska along with three others another from Poland Joseph Sebastian Pelczar and second from Italy Marie De Mattias and Virginia Centurione Bracelli Then again on April 27 2014 in St Peter s Square he was once again blessed with the honor of attending the Canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII two historic events that Father will never forget Father Mirek first came to the United States when he was 40 years old on August 28 2004 the feast day of St Augustine of Hippo In October he was assigned as a Priest at St John s Evangelist Church in Mahopac New York and remained there for 10 years On October 14 2011 was incardinated into the Archdiocese of New York He was then assigned to Sacred Heart church in Port Chester New York until it merged with Our Lady of Mercy which is now called St John Bosco Parish In 2016 Father Mirek came to Immaculate Conception as our pastor when Reverend Father John Borzuchowski retired Since Father Mirek has been our pastor at Immaculate Conception he has been working hard to keep our parish active and in great order A long list of accomplishments on the exterior of the property include cleaning up the church grounds and building an attractive fence and support wall installing security cameras internet access thoughout the property pavers repair of the parking lot and an installation of a work sink in the garage In the rectory the carpet was removed and the floors refinished In the Church the altar candle stands were refinished a sanctuary lamp was installed and new candle stands were purchased In the Chapel a new rear porch was built carpeting was removed and the floors refinished Also new windows replaced on the second floor and new heating and air conditioning systems were installed In the Parish Center the basement was waterproofed with a lifetime warranty new windows installed fresh paint was applied floors stripped and buffed new tables added in the classrooms and air conditioning was installed He had led our Parish Council on to forming a new Foundation Board which sponsors our biggest fundraiser called Rise to the Top with hopes of installing an elevator in the Parish Center to provide access for the disabled so that they may benefit from the activities throughout the building Father Mirek 7
Father Mirek Pawlaczyk continuously supports our Parish Bazaar which is a huge fundraiser and success for the community to enjoy year after year On going projects include a new roof and the remodeling of a new kitchen in the Parish Center This is all with support and thanks from Father Mirek and the members of the parish Since being in the United States Father has continued his love of many hobbies he enjoys which include hiking kayaking soccer gardening and mostly skiing On his bucket list is a trip to Alaska and to finally end up in Heaven He is also very proud of the continuation to support and organize the Perpetual Adoration Chapel Lastly a significant importance is what last of the Beatification of Carlos Acutis who catalogued the Eucharistic Miracles of the world list clarified in hopes not only for him but young and old to be sped up Father says the most important advice he can give to being a good Christian is to trust in God And the advice Father would give to a young person who would like to enter the priesthood is to build a deep relationship with Jesus and to respond to the calling of priesthood One personal story that Father Mirek wanted to share was that on March 10 2001 in Slupca Poland at St Leonard s Church when he lost consciousness and collapsed and became very deathly ill with meningitis and encephalitis He was not expected to survive and miraculously with prayers from loved ones and parishioners who joined in adoration and praying with a miraculous Crucifix from the 15th century he was healed We thank God for this miracle and thank God for continuing to bless Immaculate Conception Parish and our Church family with Father Mirek Biography as transcribed by Teresa Miles from Father Mirek Father Mirek at his ordination at Wloclawek Seminary Poland 1992 8 Father Mirek in the Immaculate Conception sacristy in Kingston 2021

A Church History Immaculate Conception A Church History O n this very special occasion of the 125th Anniversary of the Immaculate Conception Church there are numerous parishioners who should be lauded for their devotion and loyalty to the parish Some families have worshipped at our parish for three four five and six generations To tell the story of 125 years of history or any history for that matter is a tremendous task But it is important because what is happening in our Church now has depth and meaning only if it can be seen in relation to the past because history is the past We must remember that the true history of our Church is the story of hundreds and thousands of people who have joined the parish worshipped and offered praise in this sanctuary It is the story of men women and children who have lived the gospel message in unassuming ways Let us always remember that spiritual events are the most significant events in the life of the parish From this we can begin to chart a new tomorrow for our parish and community The story of the parish s growth is long and beautiful The heroes and heroines of the story are the original Polish settlers who of course would never have thought of themselves in such lofty terms Their names are in the parish archives Their baptisms weddings and all the sacraments were carefully recorded in Latin and Polish by the ink of early pastors Petrus Augustus First recorded baptism November 5 1893 Rosalia Madajewski Baptized September 16 1894 Antonius Stopczynski Anna Wagner First recorded wedding January 10 1894 Johannes Kozlowski Maria Bujanowska Married January 21 1894 Their names are inscribed in stone at Mount Calvary Cemetery where they rest amid the maple trees and wild lilies The stones are worn by time and many winters Tutaj Spoczywa Wasyl Kostecki 1883 1918 Na Pamiatke Alexandra Swedoff I Zony Jergo Emili 1914 Stanislaus Augustyn Prosi O Zdrowas Marja Their family names are on the delicate stained windows in the church Gift of Antoni Lukaszewski I Familia Gift of Jan Kozlowski I Familia Gift of Teofil Wisniewski I Familia And on the Veterans Monument outside the front of the church which honors the men and women from the parish who served in World War II Argulewicz Edward Buboltz Felix Krakowski Casimir Raskoski Arthur Sember Joseph Tomaszewski Ladilaus 10
The spirit of the original Polish settlers lives on and on in the children and their children s children in each group of First Communicants Timothy Joseph Czarnecki May 1994 Michael Anthony Janasiewicz May 1995 And in each succeeding confirmation class Craig A Tomczyk May 1994 Andrea Stopczynski May 1994 Damian Interrante May 1994 FAITH HOPE AND DREAMS In 1878 when Kingston was already 200 years old the first group of Polish settlers came to the Rondout area of Kingston Many were fleeing conscription into Bismarck s army In Prussian controlled Poland every available man or boy was forced to serve in the Prussian army Bismarck was also attempting to eradicate Polish culture and the Catholic religion The Polish clergy were not allowed to teach nor could Holy Mass be said Leaving behind these unfortunate situations our ancestors fifty families strong sailed across the sea and then up the Hudson bringing their meager belongings and their very strong faith to Rondout They attended St Peter s Church During the Easter season they were anxious to fulfill their Easter duty so young John Lukaszewski was delegated to visit the Rev M Kuhnen pastor of St Peter s Church He asked for a Polish speaking priest to come to hear their confessions for Easter and this was granted A short time later a young priest the Rev Francis Fremel 1893 1895 was sent to St Peter s as an assistant He spoke both German and Polish Taking care of the Polish people inspired him to start a separate parish for them That was the beginning of our present parish and it was placed under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception of Mary The Rev Francis Fremel was appointed the first pastor in 1893 Fr Francis Fremel For the first three years services were held in an old building on Union Street but the parishioners were not happy with this arrangement and they harbored dreams of building their own church even buying a tract of land in North Rondout In those years downtown Kingston the area including the Strand and Union Street was known as North Rondout The second pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church was the Rev Francis Fabian 1895 1909 who took charge of the parish in September of 1895 Under his direction and inspired by his zeal the men and women of the parish built with great sacrifice the present church and later the rectory in 1897 and the school in 1907 The land previously purchased in North Rondout was not centrally located among the Polish families so it was disposed of and six lots were purchased on Delaware Avenue and offered by Mrs Laura Lindsley a convert for parochial uses The Lindsley family was affiliated with the Newark Lime and Cement Company which Fr Francis Fabian owned the caves and much of the land in the Delaware Avenue and Hasbrouck Park area Mrs Lindsley took special interest in the new parish and deserves special recognition in its history Her one generous gift amounted to 4 000 00 11
A Church History Great credit is due to the members of the congregation who not only made the parish buildings possible by their own generous contributions but also by their labor and sacrifices Together with their pastor they solicited and received from the Rondout Valley Brick Manufacturers from Glasco to Kingston all the brick necessary for the erection of the church and rectory An anonymous person from the community arranged to have the brick transported free of charge and the work was begun After returning from their jobs each evening the men of the new parish would join the bricklayers and continue working often until eleven o clock at night As a result of their arduous and self sacrificing labor the church was completed The cornerstone had been laid and officially blessed on September 6 1896 and on Christmas Day of the same year Rev Francis Fabian celebrated the first Mass On November 21 1897 the Most Rev Archbishop Michael Corrigan solemnly blessed the church The rectory was completed in 1897 When the Most Rev Archbishop of New York His Eminence the late Cardinal Farley ordered that every parish must establish a parochial school the parishioners together with their pastor erected the school in 1907 Since there was no convent for the first teachers the Felician Sisters were temporarily housed in the school where they remained until their beautiful convent was built in 1921 The Felician Sisters staffed the Immaculate Conception School from its inception until its closing in 1967 It is fitting that they be recognized here because these women as well as the early settlers are heroines in our parish story Their sacrifices were many and their effect on our children was lasting and profound They educated the minds formed the character and touched the souls of several generations of Polish families of Kingston Emulating the Sisters who were held in such high esteem several young women of the parish became members of the Felician Order These included Sr M Rafaela Cecelia Bolechowitz Sr M Amancja Sofia Wesolowska Sr M Melania Michalina Slizewska Sr Alma Mary Prusakowska Sr M Brunonika Catherine Skura Sr M Benicja Rosalia Madajewska and Sr M Fulgencja Sofia Bolechowicz Father Fabian also bought ground for a cemetery on Flatbush Avenue and it is now a burial place for deceased parishioners and bears the name Mount Calvary Cemetery In April 1909 Father Fabian was transferred to Newburgh NY where he organized the large parish of St Francis Mt Calvary Cemetery Fr Francis Lesniewski The third pastor of the parish was Rev Theodore Jozwiak He had charge of the parish from April 19 1909 until October 7 1914 In that time he labored for the spiritual welfare of the parishioners and he also worked to improve their civic and social standing among the other residents of Kingston After five years of service he was transferred to St Joseph s Church in Poughkeepsie The fourth pastor the Rev Francis Lesniewski 1914 1922 as Fr Theodore Jozwiak sumed his duties in the parish on October 7 1914 He faced the responsibility of paying off a debt of over 18 000 on the church property With the cooperation of parishioners and other loyal friends the debt was paid in five years The school was enlarged and the parish was provided with a spacious recreation hall Extensive improvements were made on the cemetery property Many costly and beautiful vestments were acquired for the church by members of the Sacred Heart Society Mrs J D Cordts donated the beautiful Sta
tions of the Cross with Polish inscriptions which still adorn the interior of the church A modern sound system was installed in the church school and rectory Also a beautiful Silver Jubilee chalice of gold and silver was donated by the faithful parishioners and is still used on special occasions For many years it had been the earnest wish of the parishioners to have a set of church bells installed This wish was realized under Father Francis and the new church bells were solemnly consecrated by the Most Rev Patrick J Hayes Archbishop of New York on June 20 1920 In November 1921 the parish celebrated with great joy its Silver Jubilee It was the culmination of 25 years of unselfish efforts untold sacrifices and a profound love of the parishioners for the church of their forefathers From a handful of settlers Immaculate Conception had grown to be a flourishing parish In 1922 Rev Ignatius Bialdyga 1922 1928 arrived to assume the guidance and direction of the parish His chief interests were twofold the spiritual strength of the parish and the academic excellence of the school Through his efforts several new parish societies were established and the existing ones grew in membership There were parish suppers and parish socials which aided the parish and increased bonds of friendship among the parishioners Up until this time the school which had a high academic standard was not accredited by the State Father Bialdyga introduced the Regents examinations for the students thereby placing his school in the same category with the best schools in the state He served the parish giving of himself unsparingly until 1928 Fr Ignatius Bialdyga Rev Francis Borowski 1928 1937 the sixth pastor succeeded Father Bialdyga in 1928 He followed the traditions that had been established by his predecessors maintaining a high spirit among the parishioners and preserving and strengthening their faith There was need for some improvements and renovations and he set to work to renovate the rectory He did not remain long to enjoy the fruits of his labor because in 1937 he was transferred to St Valentine s Church in the Bronx Fr F Borowski Succeeding him was Rev Stanislaus Malinowski 1937 1945 The parish faced a new debt which Father Malinowski liquidated He anticipated the need for a new and modern school which would replace the wooden structure and a Building School Fund was started With the assistance of a few volunteers he had the interior of the church touched up and the cemetery grounds further beautified He also improved the heating systems of all the parish buildings Father Malinowski dedicated the World War II Memorial located at Delaware and Hasbrouck Avenues Father Malinowski s students remember him coming to school and personally handing out report cards The eighth pastor was the Rev Joseph Sieczek 1945 1968 Kindness and willingness to help were synonymous with the name of Father Joseph He was ordained June 11 1927 and was elevated to Domestic Prelate in 1961 It was a special honor for him when the parish celebrated the Golden Jubilee while under his care He made the celebration a gala event reflecting the gratitude and love of the parishioners for their church He invited special artists to repaint and redecorate the interior of the church while men from the parish volunteered their time to refinish the exterior of the church and rectory Fr S Malinowski Fr Joseph Sieczek 13
A Church History Under his guidance and with many hours of personal labor the Mount Calvary cemetery was maintained in such an extraordinary way that it became one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the county In 1941 when war was declared 193 young men and women left home to serve in various branches of the service In their recognition the parish erected a marble monument perpetuating their names on plaques of bronze This monument was erected in 1946 A Novena in honor of Our Lady of Victory was introduced during the war to pray for the protection and safe return of our parishioners and for the cessation of hostilities At the end of the war a Novena in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was said in thanksgiving and in a petition for lasting peace The Novena still continues to this day every Thursday evening at 7 00 pm following Mass Father Joseph worked to increase the School Fund Classes were held in the old White Eagle Hall until the school was built in 1965 At this time church societies were fostered and their numbers increased There existed in the parish a Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Society a Holy Name Society Ladies of the Rosary and the Children of Mary In addition a new society under the title of Free Poland was organized Fr Leo Adamski Under the auspices of our ninth pastor Father Leo Adamski 1968 1974 the Altar Guild was organized and with the help of Bingo funds the 5000 00 school debt was satisfied The three car garage was built under the care of Father Leo The garage to this day is not only used for parking vehicles but also for our parish s famous Annual Parish Bazaar Father Adamski was honored to have been the pastor during the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of our parish Rev Joseph Kozlowski 1974 1991 was the tenth pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church He was ordained by Cardinal Francis Spellman on March 1 1947 and was appointed as pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in 1974 by Cardinal Terence Cooke He was named Honorary Prelate on March 17 1986 and retired in May 1991 Father Joseph organized the Parish Council and the Parish Campaign which raised nearly 100 000 00 in gifts and pledges William Scafidi was the General Chairman of the committee On a lighter note one of our parishioners remembers that Father Joe would always sing Bye Bye Birdie at the Christmas parties Fr Joseph Kozlowski It was while Monsignor Joe was our pastor that the first Eucharistic Ministry began at our parish Monsignor Joe updated cemetery records and maps and erected the marble statue of the Resurrected Lord in the Mount Calvary cemetery In 1991 the Rev John W Borzuchowski 1991 2016 was invested as the eleventh pastor of Immaculate Conception Church Father John was born and educated in Poland and gave us Polish Americans a renewed pride in our church and our Polish ancestry A tradition of a once a month Mass in Polish is said on the first Sunday of the month Fr John W Borzuchowski He brought with him abundant energy and immediately with the help of the volunteers he so often praised he began to restore the sections of the parish buildings that had fallen into disrepair Old roofs were repaired and replaced as well as significant water damage repaired The convent was once again utilized to serve as a Youth Center 14
Bricks were repointed and all buildings were painted The parking areas were blacktopped and maintained Father John recognized the need for the physically challenged to be able to access the church and the work on the new rear handicapped entrance began The new addition also contained new confessionals a closet for liturgical vestments a display case for religious articles and a much needed handicapped accessible bathroom Father John s list of accomplishments to improve the church buildings the grounds and the quality of church life for his parishioners is a long one Also during that time in preparation for the anniversary Father John replaced the wooden altar with a marble one consecrated by Cardinal O Connor and he also added a marble tabernacle Father also had a metal cross installed at the top of the church s steeple The church has been completely re painted twice during his time at the parish the pews were removed and stripped of paint and restored to their natural beauty the organ was restored the church air conditioned and new heating systems were installed in the parish buildings One of his final major projects was having the church roof replaced with cooper and we now enjoy the beautiful patina Father always enjoyed having people working and seeing progress Father John invested no less effort in preserving and strengthening the faith of his parishioners Parish enrollment increased as well as mass attendance The RICA program a religious education for adults was established Father also brought RENEW to the parish which was an ongoing process of renewing one s faith reading and interpreting scripture and renewing one s faith and relationship with God With all that Father John accomplished his legacy to be left with the Immaculate Conception Church surely is the formation of the Divine Mercy Chapel Father John had a vision and with a committee and a great deal of work and planning was able to utilize the convent for 24 7 adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and was aptly named the Divine Mercy Chapel The Chapel was blessed and dedicated for the 100th Anniversary by Cardinal O Connor who transferred the Blessed Sacrament from the Church to the Chapel For twenty five years faithful adorers have spent hours with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and to that we owe a great deal to the perseverance dedication and hard work of Father John Rev Miroslaw Mirek Pawlaczyk 2016 to present answered the call to become the twelfth pastor of Immaculate Conception with the retirement of Father John The parish welcomed Father Mirek with a Parish picnic and a new chapter in our church had begun Fr Mirek was ordained in Poland May 30 1992 After his ordination Fr Mirek served in many parishes for the next twelve years also taking on the role of Principal of St Ursula Led Fr Miroslaw Mirek Pawlaczyk ochowska School The school started as a high school but under his leadership and guidance Father added an elementary and middle school to complete the process of Catholic education in one location Father Mirek came to the United States in August of 2004 the feast day of St Augustine of Hippo In October he was assigned as a priest to St Johns Evangelist Church in Mahopac and remained there for ten years In October 2011 he was incardinated into the Archdiocese of New York and was then assigned to Sacred Heart Church in Port Chester until it merged with Our Lady of Mercy which is now called St John Bosco Parish He then was assigned to the Immaculate Conception Church July 1 2016 upon the retirement of Fr John W Borzuchowski Father Mirek s list of accomplishments is a long one and credits the kindness and generosity of the parishioners of Immaculate Conception 15

A Special Thanks to Eileen Reis E ileen has been a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Church following in her parents footsteps by dedicating time and energy to support the parish in any way As a child in her elementary years she was fortunate to attend the Immaculate Conception School and become involved in all aspects of scholastic life Her innate desire to help others began at a very early age and she decided to pursue a career in nursing She attended nursing school at Benedictine Hospital and after graduation enjoyed a long and successful career as a registered nurse for more than 50 years serving the Kingston community Eileen has always been a dedicated and integral part of Immaculate Conception Church She shared her gift of singing at many Church events including weddings and funerals and also was at one time the parish s choir director She has worked with children of the parish as a religious education teacher and by training these young and at times even more mature parishioners to be altar servers and lectors Eileen s involvement in Church activities whenever and wherever needed has been very much appreciated by several pastors She herself has served as a lector and a eucharistic minister and is an active leader in the Church Guild Eileen was the first woman trustee for Immaculate Conception Parish and has served as the President of the Holy Rosary Society and a member of the Parish Council for many many years Whenever there is a Church event Eileen is there volunteering her time Most recently she served on the 125th Anniversary of Immaculate Conception Church committee and again gave generously of her time as she had done for so many years to help in any way possible The key to success lies in people like Eileen Reis We have been blessed to have her as a parishioner and we thank her for offering her time and talents in service to the Lord and to the Immaculate Conception Church

Church Ministries Music Ministry T he Immaculate Conception Choir under the direction of Lauren Ingrassia played a very significant role in the music ministry of the parish The senior members of our parish also fondly remember Theresa J Gehringer who was a faithful organist for more than 50 years She was a seamstress a piano teacher and a dedicated organist She even brought her lunch on Sundays so that she could stay after Mass for Vespers at 4 00 pm Some of the members of our present day choir have been active members since attending the parish school under the direction of the Felician Sisters who taught them to sing special songs in Polish as well as in English for the various celebrations of the parish For many years until 1991 the choir was under the direction of Eileen Reis a graduate of the parish school Today the choir sings at the 11 00 am Mass on Sundays and is in involved in the First Communion and Confirmation liturgical celebrations In addition the choir prepares the program for Midnight Mass with a selection of Polish and English carols and anthems as a prelude The Music Ministry is also served by David Kwiecinski who plays the guitar and leads the singing at the 4 30 pm Mass on Saturday evenings David also plays for the Christmas Vigil Mass which features the parish children in a Nativity pageant On the first Sunday of every month a Mass in Polish is celebrated at 9 30 am Formerly Alex Plonsky served as the organist and presently has been succeeded by his daughter Andrea Plonsky Henderson The organ was completely refurbished and re dedicated as the Msgr Kozlowski Pipe Organ Everyone involved in the music ministry of the parish is dedicated not only to enhancing the weekly liturgical celebrations but also to encouraging congregational participation 34 L to R Andrea Plonski Henderson Alex Plonsky David Kwiecinski guitarist

Church Ministries Religious Education A s in every parish the primary educators of the children are their parents Initially at Immaculate Conception Church the parish school continued the faith development of the children in the parish In the 1960s there was a high school program for public school students implemented by the Redemptorists By 1970 release time teaching of public elementary aged school children was established by the Felician Sisters who were teaching in the parish school at the time Gradually lay people from the parish became involved in the program and in 1979 Karen Wereszynski assumed the position as coordinator upon the departure of the Sisters and the closing of the parish school In the following years and up to the present much attention has been given by the Archdiocese to the Religious Education programs for public school students and to the catechists who teach them Guidelines for curriculum have been established for Grades 1 8 and programs for catechist certification have been set up both in person and on line As volunteers join the teaching staff they are strongly encouraged to complete Levels I and II for certification and coordinators are trained in supervision and administration of the programs The parish is very grateful to all who have answered the call to this ministry Some of our catechists have spent more than 20 years sharing their faith with our young parishioners We also thank all who have assumed the role of coordinator or co coordinators namely Elizabeth Marino Louise Rutski Fran and Gerry Gretzinger and presently Karen Wereszynski who returned as CRE in 2008 Finally we express our heartfelt appreciation to the priests who have supported the program and given all of us the spiritual guidance that we so need namely Monsignor Joseph Kozlowski Father John and our present pastor Father Mirek Together we will persevere to Share the Faith for the generations to come In memoriam Virginia Cadden Mary Cicale Elizabeth Marino Monsignor Joseph Kozlowski L to R Lorraine Krasinski Veronica Uhl Karen Wereszynski Director Marie Anderson Linda Henry Rhea Checksfield Not Pictured Kathleen Kiernan Ellen Argust Nancy Brucker Eileen Reis 38

MEMORIES My memories of the parish are those I learned from my friend deceased as of 2004 He was born in 1915 to Polish immigrants who were married in the Immaculate Conception Church at 5 30 AM The pastor gave them that hour because the church was being painted My friend said he was happy he lived in the heydays of Polish life of the parish the 1930 s the 1940 s and the 1950 s At that time the use the Polish language began to wane But his father used to talk about the work the men of the parish did after a full day s work at their own jobs They filled huge areas of spaces and succeeded in making the ground level This he said was particularly true of the area behind the school the old school former White Eagle building They worked hard and steady each contributing their talents and skills where needed The men worked during the day at the brickyard which sounds easy but it was very hard work My friend told me of his school days at the old school under the direction of the Felician Sisters from Enfield CT The Sisters had come from Poland and they had to learn English He told me of one Sister who insisted on pronouncing the word vegatable and vegeTABLE There were other humorous stories On Sunday afternoons there were Polish dances at which prominent Polish bands played I can recall just one Walter Ustenek The auditorium was packed Also there were two parishioners who would sing Polish songs in harmony The one I recall was Sally Bujak and I cannot recall the name of her partner but they made beautiful music My friend said the big Polish bands of the day would come at various times so there was plenty of dancing Kingston Polish people did not have an annual parade but they did in Poughkeepsie So Kingston Polish organizations and children joined the Poughkeepsie group My friend and other youngsters carried a sign with sign of the Kingston Polish church and people His mother gave birth to five children and at the time of this family disaster they ranged from age 10 to a few months old The Spanish flu affected their mother and she died The body reposed in the parlor of their home which was the custom at the time On the day of the funeral the hearse stopped in from of the church and the priest prayed the committal prayers blessed the body from the steps of the church Restrictions then were sort of the same as today I came to Kingston in 1955 and learned much later on about a Polish parish on Delaware Avenue I heard they observed the custom of blessing of the food which was a custom also kept by the Slovak people and so I would bring our basked down also It was at one of their visits that I saw the pastor a small man in height getting into a very large car He told me this was Monsignor P who loved big cars There are other stories of life friends and the people The Polish language could be heard and was spoken by all Thanks are due to all these hard working Polish immigrants As they grew in population they even worshipped in a synagogue Credit goes to the organizers the approval of the Cardinal Archbishop of New York who gave permission for the establishment of the parish and to the priests and Felician Sisters who kept the faith alive and it survives to this present day Paul Berish
