September 2024• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole I cannot believe how quickly this year is ying by, the summer is over and now we face the shortening of days as we step into autumn.Yet again we have more reports on the activities of the Branches – this time both the North East England (pages 23 – 26) and the West of Scotland Branches (page 19). The English Branch went on a family day to Yorkshire Wildlife Park and had a great time. It looked like the park makes Animal Welfare a priority, which is important and good to see. Meanwhile, the Scottish Branch were throwing axes around and also having a wonderful time! It was also encouraging to see that both events were very well attended.Elsewhere, congratulations are in order to Sara Wells and Zoe Windsor. Sara received an MBE for her services to preclinical medical studies (page 9) and Zoe for being awarded the AAALAC International Fellowship this year (page 7). Very well done both of you!I thought we might also pay some attention to Diary Dates this month. Obviously, this is a regular feature of the Bulletin but I wonder how many of you look at it, as it can be a great place to check for ideas on continuous professional development (CPD). I noticed how much could be achieved through online resources, including the RSPCA focussing on minimising severe suffering and one of the Flaire Consultants’ workshops also including alleviation of pain and distress. If you do want to obtain your CPD face-to-face there are plenty of places to go – from the Midlands, through Europe and onto North America. You just have to convince your employer to pay for you! Finally – as you may know, the statistics for animal research were delayed due to the general election but I am hoping to bring those to you next month.Until then – Dear ReadersWELLNESS WEDNESDAYA two hour virtual space to give you coping tools and strategies when faced with compassion fatigue27th November 2024 from 14.00 – 16.00 hrsTalks: l Penny Hawkins, RSPCA: Emotional labour - support for Animal Technologistsl Toni Clark, UCL: Navigating the emotional journey - how Animal Technicians can protect their mental health (andwhy they should)l Robin Labesse, Agenda Life Sciences: Emotional baggage- what can we do about it?l Danielle Cox, MHRA: The benefits of coaching for coping skills in the animal facility Event Organisers: Vicky Taylor, Linda Horan and Danielle CoxFor more information or to book your place, please use this QR codeor visit https: https://forms.gle/N4aKXU137JXZCC5B9If you have any questions concerning this event, please contact Vicky Taylor: Vicky.taylor-2@manchester.ac.uk

BulletinSeptember 2024 • 9 An MBE for Sara Wells, mouse geneticist and animal research advocateDr Sara Wells, Chief Biological Research Facility Officer at the Francis Crick Institute (https://www.crick.ac.uk/), Director of the Mary Lyon Centre, MRC Harwell (https://www.har.mrc.ac.uk/) and Director of the MRC Centre for Macaques (https://cfm.har.mrc.ac.uk/) at Porton Down, has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours with an MBE for services to Medical Research. Sara is a long-term friend and supporter of UAR and a dedicated advocate for humane animal research in her own right. She has been recognised for her huge contribution to preclinical medical studies in a career largely dedicated to improving the science of genetically modified mice.A passionate scientist from a very young age, Sara obtained a first-class BSc in Genetics from the University of Sheffield and went on to complete a PhD at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research on the ‘Expression of Neuroendocrine Genes in Transgenic Rats’. Her interest in transgenics soon took her to the MRC Harwell Institute as Head of Transgenics and Mutagenesis where she helped shape the newly built Mary Lyon Centre (MLC), soon rising to the position of Director. Sara has worked across biomedical fields, supporting countless high-impact projects in preclinical genetics, leading to her Directorship of the MRC Centre for Macaques at Porton Down and, most recently, her appointment as The Crick’s Chief BRF Officer where she provides valuable support to The Crick’s leadership team on strategic and practical decisions regarding the BRF and animal research (https://www.crick.ac.uk/research/platforms-and-facilities/biological-research-facility). In all of her many roles and in her work with scientific learned societies, Sara has promoted scientific research standards of integrity and reproducibility, making her a recognised reference point in the field of preclinical mouse genetics including in policy and legislation. Her commitment to the improvement of Laboratory Animal Welfare has been a constant of her career, not least in her work with UAR, including becoming the face of the Mary Lyon Centre, MRC Harwell virtual animal facility tour (https://www.labanimaltour.org/). Sara’s scientific excellence, personal integrity and unwavering enthusiasm have made her a model for the Animal Welfare and biomedical research sectors and UAR extends our congratulations for this well-deserved award.Reproduced with permission from UARVisit our website www.iat.org.uk for further information

BulletinSeptember 2024 • 19The West of Scotland Branch – Boom Battle Bar in GlasgowThe West of Scotland Branch got together on Friday 7th June for an epic Battle of the Braves! We were fortunate enough to have Alistair Vincent from MMM Group attend and sponsor the event! We hit the battleground at the Boom Battle Bar in Glasgow for a night of axe throwing, shuffl eboard, augmented darts, American pool and some good old beer pong to fi nish off! Axe throwing was defi nitely a task and not as easy as it looks! We had around 30 of our members come along and get involved with the festivities, who were not in the slightest bit competitive… we did attempt to keep scores at the beginning but we ended up just having too much fun to announce any winners. In true Scottish style we headed to a couple of bars in the city centre to round off such a fantastic evening! The night was a great success and we could not be more grateful to Alistair and the MMM Group for sponsoring us and allowing such an event to take place.Reporter: Nicola Munro, West of Scotland Branch Secretarywho were not in the slightest bit competitive… West of Scotland Branch Secretary

BulletinSeptember 2024 • 23North East England Branch North East England Branch Family Day to Yorkshire Wildlife ParkFamily Day to Yorkshire Wildlife ParkOn Saturday 29th June the NEE (North East England) Branch visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. The turnout was superb with nearly ninety people in attendance, consisting of IAT members and their families. Most thought the weather was going to put a damper on the joy of the day as it was raining on the drive to the park. But the sun shone through as we arrived and it turned out to be a lovely afternoon. On arrival all the children were given a little animal snack box containing treats and a drink for their adventure around the park, beautifully put together by the Branch’s Treasurer (Debbie Carter).Capybaras
Bulletin24 • September 2024 Once we had all gathered at the entrance to the park and received our passes, all the families headed off to see which of the wonderful array of animals they could spot. First stop for some was the Pangea – Discover the Dinosaur’s Reserve, which contained thirty life size animatronic dinosaurs, including everyone’s favourite the Raw-some T-Rex.From there the park was vast and stretched for miles, enclosures were very spacious and had lots for the animals to do and to keep them active and enriched. At all the reserves there were notice boards for each of the species, informing the visitors of some fun facts about the animals and information on where they are located around the world. These also highlighted how endangered they are in the wild and how their natural habitat is slowly being destroyed. The polar bear enclosures were massive and had caves built into the hills, rockfaces and vegetation for them to shelter under. It was fantastic to see a couple of the polar bears swimming around in the vast lake in one of their two reserves, while playing with plastic toys and each other. At all the reserves there were notice boards for each of the species, informing Vocal Sea Lions Giraffe
BulletinSeptember 2024 • 25Moving on around the park, it was great for the kids to get quite close to animals like wallabies and lemurs – where you could walk through their enclosures. Other reserves housed majestic animals like the pride of lions that were basking on a large rock formation in the glorious sun that had fi nally come through the now disappearing clouds. There were plenty of places to stop and rest and just take in the park’s surroundings, as for many it was a lot of walking between the different areas. A great selection of refreshments and facilities were dotted about the park as well, which came in handy when you had to refuel for the next part of the adventure around the park. Obviously, an ice cream was needed in the lovely weather. A few lucky people got to even see the tiger as it patrolled its enclosure and played in the beautiful waterfall within it. The Galada monkeys and the baboons were entertaining for the kids as they chased each other around their enclosures and were hiding behind objects that were in there for their enrichment.facilities were dotted about the park as well, which came in handy when you Dik DikLionsMeerkats
Bulletin26 • September 2024 Polar Bear inan amazing environmentIt was great to catch up with other members of the Branch as you walked round, discussing what was the best thing they had seen during their wandering. The giraffes were very impressive and just strolled around eating all the branches the keepers had hung from the perimeter fencing, giving everyone the best opportunity to see them. After walking for what would seem like a half marathon around the park seeing capybaras, zebras, meerkats, dik diks, okapi and Visayan Warty Pigs to name but a few; the last thing we saw were the very agile and vocal sea lions, these were swimming around like they were in an Olympic synchronised swimming competition. This was co-ordinated by the occasional alpha male shouting out orders as to impress the females that were separated off by a mesh gate! Most people met up in the gift shop at the end as they were leaving to purchase a little souvenir of the day or another soft cuddly toy for their child’s bedroom. Overall, it was a great day out for the family and this view was shared by all the attendees. Here’s to seeing what the NEE branch can pull out of the bag for next year’s family day!Reporter: John Bland
