April 2025• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole Another edition in which we focus almost exclusively on the IAT membership, shall we start with Tech Month? Both the University of Southampton and The Crick Institute have been celebrating. Crick had a great day, starting with a presentation followed by some lively games – pages 34 – 35. Southampton have also been very busy – with trips out, baking and holding their own photo competition! See pages 29 – 31.Southampton ran out of time, so did not manage to enter the Congress photo competition this year – but on the front cover is another of this year’s entries, a beautiful spinal-horned antelope by Lenin Siguencia, a great shot.In another report – Zoe Windsor on pages 7 – 12, describes her time in the USA, as the UK recipient of the AAALAC Fellowship Award 2024. It seemed as though she had a very interesting and worthwhile time while there. If youare a RanTech, why not think about applying for this yourself? There is stilltime – closing date is 1st June, see page 6 for information on how to apply.Alex Swan on pages 25 – 26, talks about his career at York University, a big part of which seems to revolve around his IAT quali cations and the IAT Education group are running a couple of questionnaires around – one asking employers for their feedback and one asking employees for their experiences – see page 13 and comment, the group are very interested in your opinions.Lastly, I want to introduce you to a new section. I have started using AI (arti cial intelligence) for a few things and thought I would introduce it to the Bulletin. I am thinking of this column as a place for everyone to gain more information about issues that affect our industry. This month I thought we would start off looking at the 3Rs especially with mice in mind, see pages 16 – 19. Let me know what you think and if there are any questions you want to pose. BulletinMay 2025 • 7Iarrived in Washington D.C late on Saturday night and headed straight to the hotel for some much-needed rest after a long day of travelling. I had Sunday as a free day to explore, so I woke up and headed straight out to catch the Metro towards the city. I hopped off near Capitol Hill and spent the day on the National Mall, taking in the Capitol building, monuments and museums. A real highlight was seeing the Star-Spangled Banner and Abraham Lincoln’s top hat in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, as well as some more recent items such as Dorothy’s red slippers from the Wizard of Oz! The Marine Corps marathon was also happening that day and I was struck by the incredible atmosphere, with the crowds coming out to cheer the runners on.On Monday I was met at my hotel and taken to the National Institute of Health (NIH) for my fi rst day of visits. This started with an overview of their team structure and compliance roles as well as a valuable introduction to the legislation and guidelines which are quite different from the UK The AAALAS Fellowship 2024 UK Recipient ReportSightseeing in DCCall for nominations now open for the popular2025 AAALAC International Fellowship UK Award“Life-changing!”“The highlight of my professional career.”“This experience offers the most unique opportunity in our industry.”https://www.aaalac.org/awards/fellowship-award/DEADLINE IS JUNE 1, 2025The IAT RAnTech winner will receive a week-long guest visit to prestigious biomedical research facilities in the USA plus complimentary attendance at the National AALAS Meeting, the USA’s largest laboratory animal science and technology meeting. Bulletin8 • May 2025regulations. NIH runs a brilliant monthly seminar series focussing on different topics with regard to behaviour and welfare which I was kindly invited to attend and I looked forward to getting involved with. Our fi rst onsite facility visit was to the zebrafi sh facility which was extremely large – the plant work involved in keeping a facility that size running was impressive! Next, we visited a non-human primate (NHP) facility, where I learned about marmoset research, housing and training. After this, I visited the macaque facility where they were in the process of converting their conventional cages to group housing pens. I had the opportunity to speak with their behaviourist about the interesting training methods they use to encourage the macaques to come forward confi dently. On our way to the fi nal facility visit of the day, we stopped at a plaque laid in recognition of the contributions made by animals to advances in research. NIH hold an annual celebration in honour of their research animals. A lovely concept which is beginning to spread to the UK. The fi nal visit was to a mouse facility specialising in craniofacial research. I learned about standard husbandry practices for rodents and had a tutorial in using hydro packs. I was also given a demonstration of their health tracking processes, an impressive system which allows both researchers and care staff to track clinical cases. At the end of the day, I was collected and driven to Janelia research campus in Virginia. I received a very warm welcome there and had a lovely dinner with some of the team before retiring for the night in one of their elegant guest rooms.View from Janelia Campus guesthouseIAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 8 29/04/2025 11:56
BulletinMay 2025 • 9On Tuesday I woke to a beautiful autumn view of the Janelia campus. The second day of visits started with me giving a presentation to the team about my career pathway and areas of interest/specialisation. After which, I met with the surgical team and learned about how a technical service is provided by the animal welfare staff and was able to have a look at their multi-station surgical suite. After which, there were visits to the fi sh and rodent facilities where I was able to see some incredible behaviour work in action and also learnt about how the breeding is managed. In between the facility visits, I had the opportunity to speak with staff members about training, how the IACUC functions and also tolearn about their transgenics service which creates new mouse lines for research. I ended the day with a visit to the invertebrates shared resource team and learned about the production of Drosophilaand C-elegans strains which are shipped all over the world. Having no experience with invertebrates, I very much enjoyed the demonstration of GFP (green fl uorescent protein) and RFP (red fl uorescent protein) screening under the microscope! I was struck by the passion and commitment to Animal Welfare throughout the team as well as the interest and willingness of the animal care staff to get involved with the research. Bulletin10 • May 2025On Wednesday, I was kindly invited to a luncheon at the AAALAC International Offi ces in Maryland. I had a lovely tour of the offi ces and was fi nally able to meet the team and many of the staff members who had been helping me prepare for my visit since the summer. We had lunch together in the board room and there was a presentation on AAALAC International as an organisation, history and goals. Over lunch the team shared with me, stories and photos from their various team building events and festive activities in the offi ce. It was great to see such a wonderful team spirit and uplifting atmosphere. After lunch, we went for a visit to the National Association of Biomedical Research (NABR) offi ces. We had a very interesting discussion about the public’s perception of animal research and how this differs slightly between the UK and U.S.A. I learned about how NABR works tirelessly to combat and correct misinformation and lobby the U.S. government for support. The following day, it was time to travel to Nashville, Tennessee for the AALAS meeting. I arrived in the evening in the middle of a storm but still decided to venture out and explore Nashville. The infamous Broadway was about a ten-minute walk from my hotel and it did not disappoint! Even in the rain it was one of the liveliest places I had ever seen. There was music playing in every bar and people out and about everywhere enjoying themselves. Broadway in NashvilleIAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 10 29/04/2025 11:56
BulletinMay 2025 • 11On Friday morning, I was collected from the hotel for a visit to Vanderbilt University. I was warmly welcomed by the team who gave me an insightful overview their structure and helped me understand their approach to governance and compliance. I then had a tour of the fi sh facility and had the opportunity to see an inspection being done by one of the post-monitoring compliance teams. Afterwards, I was given a tour of the rodent facility where it was great to learn about the labelling systems they have in place to monitor clinical cases and to understand how the facility runs operationally. The staffi ng structure was different to what I had previously encountered and it was interesting to hear about the different roles of Animal Technicians, veterinarian technicians and veterinarians along with understanding the operating model as a whole. After lunch we visited the large animal facility and saw squirrel monkeys, cynomolgus and rhesus macaques, sheep, dogs and tree shrews. I had not worked with many of these species in the lab and so enjoyed learning about the research they contribute to, as well as their housing and husbandry procedures. We ended the day with a visit to the pathology lab where necropsy for the animal and clinical programmes was done. That evening, I had the pleasure of having dinner with one of the previous American AAALAC Fellows and very much enjoyed sharing experiences from our trips.Saturday was free day in Nashville. I met up with my husband who had fl own in for the AALAS meeting and we enjoyed a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Broadway and the Nashville Waterfront. In the evening, we went to a show at the Grand Ole Opry, where we enjoyed some great country music.Country Music Hall of FameVisiting the Grand Ole OpryIAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 11 29/04/2025 11:56
Bulletin12 • May 2025The fi nal week of the Fellowship visit consisted of the AALAS Meeting. It was the biggest conference I had ever attended, with so many great presentations programmed. I found it diffi cult to decide which talks to attend! I was able to catch up with people I had met during the previous week’s visits and also made many new connections. Overall, the experience was a great opportunity for my continued professional growth and I very much look forward to collaborating with new friends and colleagues again in the future, as well as sharing what I have learned with colleagues back in the UK. Bulletin16 • May 2025 A.I.To obtain 3Rs information specifi cally tailored for mice requires focussing on theunique aspects of mouse biology, behaviour and common research uses. Here isa breakdown of 3Rs resources and considerations some specifi cally for mice, others more general categorised by Replacement, Reduction and Refi nement:1. Replacement (Avoiding or Replacing the Use of Mice)lIn vitro alternatives:❍Cell Cultures: Using mouse cell lines (e.g. embryonic stem cells, fi broblasts, tumour cell lines) or primary cell cultures (e.g. hepatocytes, neurons) to study specifi c cellular processes, drug effects or disease mechanisms without the need for a whole animal.❍ Organ-on-a-Chip Technology: Mimicking the function of mouse organs (such as liver, kidney, lung) on microfl uidic devices to study drug metabolism, toxicity, or disease progression in a more controlled environment.❍Computational Modelling: Using computer simulations to model mouse physiology, disease processes, or drug interactions, reducing the need for initial in vivo screening.lIn silico (Computer-Based) Modelling:❍Databases: Uses existing databases of mouse genetics, gene expression and phenotypic data to inform research questions and potentially reduce the need for new experiments. Examples include the Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) database.Sourcing Information – Questions and Answers 3Rs Information for MiceIAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 16 29/04/2025 11:56
BulletinMay 2025 • 17 l Lower Organisms:❍ Yeast/Bacteria: Utilising yeast or bacteria for preliminary studies of gene function or drug screening. These organisms are genetically easy to manage and can be used to identify potential targets or compounds for further study in mice.❍ Drosophila (Fruit Flies) and C. elegans (Roundworms): These invertebrates can model certain aspects of mouse biology, such as developmental processes, ageing, or neurodegenerative diseases. While they are not direct replacements, they can help narrow down research questions or identify potential therapeutic targets before moving to mouse models.l Human-based methods:❍ Human samples: Use human tissue or blood samples where ethically appropriate and scientifically valid.❍ Human cell lines: Utilise human cell lines instead of mouse cell lines.l Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: Conducting thorough literature reviews to identify existing data that can address the research question without the need for new animal experiments.l Sharing Data and Resources: Making mouse models, data and reagents available to other researchers to avoid unnecessary duplication of experiments.2. Reduction (Minimising the Number of Mice Used)l Experimental Design:❍ Power Analysis: Performing power analysis to determine the minimum sample size needed to detect a statistically significant effect. ❍ Factorial Designs: Using factorial designs to study multiple variables simultaneously, reducing the total number of animals required.❍ Sequential Experimentation: Conducting experiments in stages, with data from each stage informing the design of subsequent stages, to optimise the use of animals.❍ Longitudinal Studies: Collecting multiple measurements from the same animal over time, rather than using separate groups of animals for each time point.l Statistical Analysis:❍ Appropriate Statistical Methods: Using statistical methods that are appropriate for the experimental design and data type.❍ Covariate Adjustment: Adjusting for confounding variables to reduce variability and increase statistical power.l Sharing Controls: Using the same control group for multiple experimental groups, where scientifically appropriate.IAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 17 29/04/2025 11:56
Bulletin18 • May 2025 l Pilot Studies: Conducting pilot studies to optimise experimental conditions and refine experimental protocols before conducting large-scale experiments.l Genetically Modified Mice: Careful planning of breeding strategies for genetically modified mice to minimise the number of animals produced. Using techniques like embryo cryopreservation and in vitro fertilisation to preserve valuable mouse lines.3. Refinement (Minimising Pain, Suffering, Distress and Lasting Harm)l Housing and Husbandry:❍ Environmental Enrichment: Providing mice with opportunities to engage in natural behaviours such as nesting, foraging, and social interaction. Examples include providing nesting material, tunnels, chew toys and social housing (when appropriate).❍ Temperature and Humidity Control: Maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity levels to minimise stress.❍ Noise Reduction: Minimising noise levels in the animal facility.❍ Social Housing: Housing mice in groups (when appropriate) to promote social interaction and reduce isolation. Careful consideration of strain characteristics and individual temperament to avoid aggression.❍ Monitoring: Regular observation of mice for signs of pain, distress, or illness.l Experimental Procedures:❍ Anaesthesia and Analgesia: Using appropriate anaesthesia and analgesia to minimise pain and discomfort during and after experimental procedures. Selecting the most appropriate anaesthetic and analgesic agents for the specific procedure and mouse strain.❍ Surgical Techniques: Using aseptic surgical techniques to minimise the risk of infection. Providing adequate post-operative care, including pain management and wound monitoring.❍ Handling Techniques: Using gentle and consistent handling techniques to minimise stress. Training personnel in proper mouse handling techniques. Using tunnel handling techniques, which are less stressful for mice.❍ Blood Collection: Using appropriate blood collection techniques to minimise pain and trauma. Selecting the smallest possible gauge needle and collecting the minimum volume of blood necessary.IAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 18 29/04/2025 11:56
BulletinMay 2025 • 19 ❍ Drug Administration: Using appropriate drug administration routes and techniques to minimise pain and discomfort. Considering alternative routes of administration (e.g., oral, topical) when possible.❍ Humane Endpoints: Establishing clear and objective humane endpoints to minimise suffering. Humane endpoints are criteria that indicate when an animal should be euthanised to prevent further suffering.❍ Minimising Stress: Reducing stress during procedures by acclimating mice to the experimental environment, using positive reinforcement training, and avoiding unnecessary handling.l Training and Competency:❍ Training Programmes: Providing comprehensive training programmes for all personnel who work with mice. Training should cover animal handling, experimental procedures, pain management and humane endpoints.❍ Competency Assessment: Assessing the competency of personnel to perform procedures safely and humanely.Specific Resources for 3Rs and Mice:l The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs): An organisation that provides resources and funding for 3Rs research. They have specific guidance on mouse handling, housing and welfare. https://www.nc3rs.org.uk/l FELASA (Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations): FELASA provides guidelines and recommendations for the care and use of laboratory animals, including mice.l PubMed: Search PubMed using keywords such as ‘3Rs’ ‘mouse’ ‘Animal Welfare’ ‘refinement’ ‘reduction’ and ‘replacement’ to find relevant research articles and reviews.l Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI): Database is a great source for genetics, genomics and biology of the laboratory mouse. http://www.informatics.jax.org/l The Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) at the USDA: Provides information on Animal Welfare, including resources on the 3Rs. https://www.nal.usda.gov/awicIAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 19 29/04/2025 11:56

Bulletin22 • May 2025 International Family Equality Day:Celebrating Diversity and InclusionSince its inception in 2012, International Family Equality Day (IFED) has been observed annually on the fi rst Sunday of May to increase visibility for LGBTQ+ families and highlight the importance of protecting their rights. IFED for 2025 is 4th May 2025 and the motto is“Feel free to choose your own motto, be creative and enjoy the time you spend with your family and friends.”The Origins of IFEDMaria von Känel conceived the idea of a dedicated day to recognise diverse families while working to promote LGBTQ+ family rights in Switzerland. Recognising the growing number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ)* individuals raising children globally, she sought to create a symbol of solidarity and strength. On May 6, 2012, the fi rst IFED celebrations took place across Europe, Canada and the USA, bringing together families, allies, government representatives and policymakers. The Signifi cance of IFEDRegardless of the legal, political, and social landscapes of different countries, IFED emphasises the universal right to family equality. The day serves multiple purposes:lRaising Awareness: By increasing visibility for LGBTQ+ families, IFED fosters understanding and acceptance.lCombating Discrimination: As a tool against homophobia and transphobia, IFED promotes tolerance and inclusivity.lStrengthening Communities: The day provides an opportunity for LGBTQ+ parents, children and allies to come together and celebrate their family structures.0509 1317 2125 2902 0610 1418 2226 3003 0711 1519 2327 3104 0812 1620 2428Awareness and EventsMayiat.org.ukiat.org.ukInstitute ofAnimal TechnologyCOUNCILInternational Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and BiphobiaWorld Day forCultural Diversityfor Dialogue andDevelopmentInternational Dayfor BiologicalDiversityPansexualVisibility DayInternational Family Equality DayWorld Red Cross and Red Crescent dayNational Day forStaff Networks Global Accessibility Awareness DaylStroke Awareness MonthlMental Health Awareness MonthlSkin Cancer Awareness MonthlNational Walking Monthl5 – 11 Deaf Awareness Weekl12 – 18 Coeliac UK Week l12 – 18 Mental Health Awareness Week 010509 1317 2125 2902 0610 1418 2226 3003 0711 1519 2327 3104 0812 1620 2428Awareness and EventsMayiat.org.ukiat.org.ukInstitute ofAnimal TechnologyCOUNCILInternational Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and BiphobiaWorld Day forCultural Diversityfor Dialogue andDevelopmentInternational Dayfor BiologicalDiversityPansexualVisibility DayInternational Family Equality DayWorld Red Cross and Red Crescent dayNational Day forStaff Networks Global Accessibility Awareness DaylStroke Awareness MonthlMental Health Awareness MonthlSkin Cancer Awareness MonthlNational Walking Monthl5 – 11 Deaf Awareness Weekl12 – 18 Coeliac UK Week l12 – 18 Mental Health Awareness Week 01IAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 22 29/04/2025 11:56
BulletinMay 2025 • 23lAdvocating for Equal Rights: IFED reinforces the ongoing fi ght for legal recognition and protection of all family forms. How IFED is CelebratedIFED celebrations vary globally and include public gatherings, educational events, discussions and family-friendly activities. Events often feature participation from LGBTQ+ organisations, allies, government institutions and policymakers, reinforcing the message that all families deserve respect and recognition.IFED Goals and MissionThe IFED movement is guided by core objectives:– Raising awareness of family diversity and advocating for social and legal acceptance worldwide.– Empowering families by providing visibility and a supportive global network.– Maintaining neutrality to ensure IFED remains an unbranded, inclusive event open to all.– Expanding global reach, mobilizing support at regional and international levels.– Engaging allies through annual focus initiatives to broaden the movement’s impact.– Increasing visibility through digital platforms, including the IFED global website, Facebook, X, Instagram and the annual IFED report. The Future of Family EqualityAs the number of LGBTQ+ families continues to rise, the need for visibility, legal protection and social acceptance remains critical. IFED plays an essential role in shaping a future where all families, regardless of their structure, are treated with equal dignity and rights.By celebrating International Family Equality Day, communities worldwide send a strong message of inclusivity, love and equality for all families. Whether through participation in local events, sharing stories, or advocating for policy changes, everyone can contribute to fostering a more inclusive society.Become a MemberAnyone who wishes to support IFED can become a member. BulletinMay 2025 • 25 Animal Technology and Welfare (ATW) Journal OnlineIjoined the University of York in July 2015 as a Grade 3 Animal Technician. At the time, I was simply driven by my love for animals and a growing curiosity about science. I had always known I wanted a career in animal care after leaving college in 2009 and the idea of contributing – no matter how indirectly, to life-saving medicines really appealed to me.Thanks to York’s supportive approach to staff development, I have been able to steadily build my skills and grow my career. In May 2018, I completed my IAT Level 2 Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology and was promoted to Grade 4 Senior Animal Technician shortly after. I later gained my NACWO (Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer) qualification in April 2021 and completed my Level 3 IAT Diploma in May 2023. In August 2024, I was promoted again to my current role as a Grade 6 Technical Specialist. Every step of the way, the University funded my training, which I am incredibly grateful for.My role now is a real blend of practical animal husbandry, data management, welfare oversight and researcher support. I specialise in the care of fish, performing health checks, feeding and maintaining housing and equipment. As a NACWO, I help ensure the highest standards of Animal Welfare are met, liaising with researchers and staff to support ethical and efficient research. I have even trained to assist with surgeries when extra help is needed and often support researchers with the administrative processes involved in their work.Technical Specialist (Senior Animal Technician)Alex SwanIAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 25 29/04/2025 11:56
Bulletin26 • May 2025 Over time, I have become a go-to person in the department. Early in my career, I made it a goal to step into any area that needed support – I actively sought out training to fi ll those gaps. That mindset helped me become dependable and valued, not just for my technical skills but for being someone others could turn to.When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it was a challenging time. Like many, I found the disruption diffi cult but being identifi ed as a key worker really shifted my perspective. It made me realise how much my role matters. I was not just clocking in, I was making a difference. That moment really lit a fi re in me to continue pushing forward and contributing as much as I could.I am now trained to train others and that is one of the things I love most – passing on knowledge in a kind and supportive way. It is rewarding to know I have played a part in someone else’s career journey. If I had to give one piece of advice to others starting out at York, it would be this: your effort will never go unnoticed. York is a place that gives back what you put in. There are so many supportive avenues here – whether it is career development or mental health support. I am proud to be part of a workplace where that kind of culture thrives. Most of all, I enjoy the sense of community. It is a place where people lift each other up – irrespective of it’s a casual chat across departments or checking in on a colleague who is having a tough day. That’s what makes York University special to me.Reprinted from https://www.york.ac.uk/staff/working/tech-york/tech-stories/alex-swan/Reporter: Alex SwanCopies can be ordered via the IAT website www.iat.org.uk/booksDo you need a reference book? We also held a family and friends tour of the facility which was very popular.IAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 30 29/04/2025 11:57

Bulletin34 • May 2025 at The Francis Crick InstituteTech MonthThe BRF (Biological Research Facility) Lunch Seminar was a wonderful experience in celebration of Tech Month. The event kicked off with a 30-minute presentation from one of the Group Leaders at the Francis Crick Institute, Vivian Li gave an engaging and informative talk on her group’s research into intestinal cancer. Her lab’s animal research focusses on four key areas: stem cell fate decisions, tissue regeneration after injury, colorectal cancer and tissue engineering. She detailed the critical role of mice in this research, providing the technicians with a better understanding of how their work facilitates and contributes to such projects; the BRF are a large cog in the machine. Vivian Li’s talk about her lab’s research.Networking and team building at the event.Following the presentation, the group gathered for lunch and participated in a selection of fun games to celebrate Tech Month, with prizes to be won. The games included ‘Guess the Number’, ‘Wheel of Fortune’, ‘Hook a Fish’ and ‘Guess whose pets or baby photos’, as well as a ‘Get to know the BRF team Bingo’, leading colleagues to Crick BRF technician’s month in-scripted pens.IAT BULLETIN MAY25.indd 34 29/04/2025 11:57

It was exciting to see the friendly competition and a reminder to celebrate our technicians! Everyone also had the opportunity to walk away with a Crick BRF technician month pen.Overall, the event struck a perfect balance of educational content and fun team-building activities. Vivian Li’s talk provided everyone with a glimpse into her lab’s research and how we in the BRF assist this work, we think it was benefi cial to know how and why the mice are used that are in our care. The selection of games created a lively, welcoming environment for all involved and it was a memorable and enjoyable event.
