Who am I? My name is Hunter Freeman, and this is a portfolio of my writings. Some of the writings are true stories about my life, some are stories about the people I know, and some are just made-up stories. I go to Cowley College and this is my first year here. I am a creative writing major. I chose this major because I like to write and I want to be a sports journalist when I graduate from college. I was born and raised in Ponca City Oklahoma. The reason I want to be a sports journalist is pretty self-explanatory, I like to write and I love sports. I played baseball for about fourteen years before coming to Cowley. I am not a very talkative person so I like to write to express my emotion without actually having to speak about it. With that being said these writings mean a lot to me and I want to thank everyone who takes the time to read my work and all the other great works from the other students. I hope you enjoy, and thank you for coming.

Morning rise The sun rises every morning and it falls every night, but what if it didn’t. What if the world never had light? What if we were born with no taste no smell no sight? What would even be our fate? This world would be hell. Life sure would be a fight. All these things we wonder but won’t ever have to see, because the sun rises every morning and it falls every night.

Linguistic Inspiration A time when language inspired me, is when I went to my uncle Mike’s speech at NOC. He was talking about when he was in Afghanistan. When he was finished filming his documentary, there was a kid and he was badly beaten by his parents. so, they took him in the same helicopter that they were taking Mike home in. They took the kid to a hospital and saved that kid’s life. What Mike said that day was truly remarkable. He said “Now I know that saving that kid’s life isn’t going to change everyone’s life but it gives that kid a chance to grow up and change others’ lives and inspire others to do the same”. Those words had me in tears and gave me a sense of hope for this world, because there are millions of lives saved a day and even if that kid doesn’t grow up to change lives someday there are people that will use their second chance at life and inspire others to do great things for this world.

None of my Business Person: Hey buddy. Me: Hey. Person: Do you want to go grab a bite to eat? Me: No. Person: Why not? Aren’t you hungry? Me: yep. Person: Then what’s the deal? Me: Every time we go out to eat a stranger comes to the car and you give him cash and he gives you a small bag. Person: It’s just business. Me: Last time I knew drugs weren’t business. Person: Yeah, it’s none of your business. Me: Oh, well if it’s none of my business then why am I the one worried that the cops are going to stop us and take you to jail with me in the car, if its none of my business then why am I the one worried for your health, if it’s none of my business then why am I the one on the lookout for the stranger feeding your habits, if it’s none of my business why am I the one on your journey to chase the dragon, if it’s none of my business why are you even taking me in the first place.

Sweet Oklahoma Smell It’s a beautiful summer day in the year 2037, and my wife, kids, and I were at top golf in Oklahoma City. The summer air smelled as if there were someone constantly spraying a giant can of Febreze over the top of us. Oklahoma weather is usually pretty nice in the summer, but today was different. The flowers were bloomed and prettier than ever, the leaves of the trees were dancing while the cool thin wind was singing to them. After an hour-long top golf session, we were all pooped, so we decided we were going to go eat at Texas Roadhouse then head to our hotel and call it a day. While we were eating (I got steak of course) the TV said something that caught my attention. Turn it up I scream. The reporter on the TV said, “The Taliban have launched a missile and it is headed for Oklahoma”. My heart sank, I said to myself does this mean that; and before I could finish my sentence the reporter said “Embrace yourselves WW3 has just started”. This can’t be true, I said, everyone is going nuts running around the town. The streets were packed full of cars trying to evacuate, but it was no use. With that kind of traffic, it would take 5 days to get out of Oklahoma, 5 days we don’t have, we needed to go now. Stores were broken into by looters trying to get as many supplies as possible. I received a special email that stated there was a safe house in Arkansas that we could go to. Arkansas is a little far but I had a plan to travel by foot until we see an empty road and steal a car, it was the only way. We walked for what felt like a marathon, but we finally stumbled across an empty road that would take us to where we needed to go. I hot-wired the nearest car and we were off. We drove for about 40 miles. Then we heard it, the bomb exploded. I had to think fast. Out of the corner of my eye, I spot what looks like an underground cave. I thought for sure I was just seeing things, but what other choice did we have but to go look, we were dead meat anyway. To our surprise,

Page 7

it was actually an underground cave. It was really deep and was great protection from the blast. We were in that cave for days without food or water, so we had to go outside and try to find something to keep us alive. We stumbled across some men on our quest for food and water that were demanding we give them everything we had. We had nothing, they didn’t like that answer and killed my wife and kids. I froze. It felt as if someone was stabbing thousands of needles in my heart. I felt weak and vulnerable, no I couldn’t go out like that. I managed to grab one of their guns while they were distracted and avenged my loved ones before they could even blink. I gathered all of their supplies and headed back to the cave. It is now the year 2040, the war has been going on for three years now. I ran out of all the food and water I had. I don’t have the energy to go get more, I am too weak. I miss the old Oklahoma; I always look back to the day that this all started. It was such a beautiful summer day that turned to hell within hours. Oh, what I would do to be able to see my wife and kids again. I think this is the last time the world will ever hear from me. I’m going to rest and maybe this will all just be a dream and I will wake up to my kids and wife and I can finally smell that sweet Oklahoma summer smell again I could only pray. Goodnight world, this is the end for me.

Fifth Grade Shenanigans A time I felt afraid was when I was in the office in elementary school for punching a kid in the face. We were in 5th grade. The class was taking a bathroom break after recess and before we went into the lunchroom to eat, and a couple of my classmates were goofing off. Well, I’m sure you know where this is heading. Of course, one gets mad at the other and punches him in the face, and the kid that got sucker-punched has glasses so they fly off of his face and they are all jacked up looking and broken. This kid was known as the “nerdy kid” and didn’t have many friends. I’ve never liked the term “nerdy kid”. I just didn’t understand why someone would get picked on for being more intelligent than others. So, I see this kid get punched and a sudden rage ran through me, and I chased this kid into the stall. He was terrified and I could tell, Afterall there was a reason he was picking on the “nerdy kid” and it was because he was physically and mentally weaker than anyone else. Before I took a strike at him, I remember saying something along the lines of “Now I’m going to show you what it feels like to get picked on by someone bigger than you”. Now I’m in the office, scared of what my parents are going to do to me, but to my surprise when I told them the story, they were proud of me for standing up for someone and they even took me to get ice cream. I probably could have handled it a little better but one thing is for sure, that ice cream sure did taste good.

Dude My junior year we got a new coach for baseball, and the first thing I said to him was what’s up dude. Well, he didn’t like that so on the first practice he made me run a lot. He told me that year that he thought he wasn’t going to like me because of what I said, but we grew close to each other that year. He told me nonstop that he liked the way I pitched, he said “you may not throw the hardest in the league but you sure damn do throw strikes and that’s what we need to get easy outs”. Well, the last game we played was against Owasso the #1 team in the state, I had 8 strike outs and three of them were D1 commits, we held them to a 1 run lead and they ended up winning it, but coach pulled me aside after the game and said “you pitched a hell of a game son, you have the right to call me dude”. I may have learned the hard way that you should definitely not call your coach dude the first day you meet them but at least now I have a great story and a great friendship from it.
