GETTING A JOB WHEN LEAVING THE ROYAL MARINES Whether you have completed full service or coming out mid term getting a good job is not at all easy even when you have good qualifications Speaking from personal experience coming out of the service and getting established in Civvy Street was one of my most difficult and depressing life experiences especially with a large mortgage and a wife and two children to also consider So take the time to approach this difficult period seriously Most former Royal Marines will do well in the end Having completed my full service I then had to adapt to Civvy Street My first advice would always be if you do not have to leave the Royal Marines then stay in and enjoy the camaraderie and friendships that you have because outside it will be very different I think that I have experienced most of the setbacks that you can experience in one lifetime and therefore have written this guide to help others to avoid all the bad experiences that I had It is almost impossible to avoid the inevitable office politics and back stabbing that goes on Also beware of your positive can do attitude as it may frighten those around you that are less motivated and undercover jealousy and sabotage can be the result Therefore if it is possible you would be well advised to try to find ex servicemen to work with as we have a common language and understanding There are many former Royals who then set up successful businesses and are looking for people like you to help them be successful Likewise there are now many helpful agencies that will guide ex servicemen on their way so don t dismiss them Having had my share of bad experiences I decided to set up my own company and instead of working for someone else and be in charge of my day to day events and livelihood This is also not easy as it always takes at least two years and a lot of hours of hard work and perseverance to get established and to then make a profit However this may well be the topic for another future guide In the meantime I will concentrate on trying to help you to get on the first rungs of the civilian ladder and to get a good job that you will be happy in Although your immediate concerns may be getting a job and work survival don t forget that there are many other Royals who would be pleased to give you encouragement and support when you need it The best way to do this is to become a member of the Royal Marines Association and to meet up with your like minded comrades as often as you can When we all share we all benefit and we keep alive that essential sense of humour that always gets us through good luck in your mission Peter Brown MBE MSc Former PTI and WO1 AIPTRM Director Wellness Management Ltd 2

HOW TO GET YOUR IDEAL JOB COMMANDO STYLE GENERAL The best form of defence is to attack So if you are coming out of the service and are looking for the ideal job you are going to have to put a lot of time and effort into it Jobs do not come looking for you so you have to find them by researching what is available in your chosen area and also perhaps networking with others in a similar position or those that can help you Respect your own values and priorities If family time is important to you it may be best not to consider jobs away from home involving heavy travel or demanding work schedules Never lose sight of your priorities in life to chase a job There could well be an opportunity in your own area Also if you are not currently working make sure that you take good care of your health and fitness so that you practice what you preach and look the part maintaining a good image is important Your service background is a big asset but civvy street is very different and without the camaraderie that you will have been used to You now have to look at things through the eyes of civilian employers and in a very competitive world How do you compare with the competition in qualifications training and experience Good people are always in demand so aim to be the best Never rule out temporary work It s a great way to shop around for interesting companies without having to fully commit yourself Many companies need temporary cover and some even specialise in providing temporary staff cover for various organisations You could go and work for them to gain valuable insights and experience This is a great way to get your foot in the door Try to find a perfect fit Look for a job that will excite you utilise your best skills and also make you happy Even if you haven t got your ideal job yet keep looking for it Get to know your industry and potential job opportunities better than your competitors Research every organisation and location that you are interested in and get a head start on everyone else Finally looking for a good job is a full time job Set up a home office as your command post If you want to present yourself well you will need to produce a high quality cover letter and resumes Always use high quality paper e g Conqueror 100grams and envelopes Have your documents professionally printed on a laser printer Never photocopy documents presentation is everything PREPARING YOUR CV Job hunting is very competitive and you will be competing with many other candidates who will have similar goals and abilities to you The best person will get the job Your CV is the first impression that a potential employer will have of you As Henry Ford once said You never get a second chance to make a good first impression So spend time preparing This all starts with your Curriculum Vitae C V A good CV will not get you a job but it might get you an interview Most employers will require a CV It is their first impression of you so spend plenty of time on it They may have their own application form instead In this case spend a lot of time completing it to show yourself off in a good light 3

Page 4

Apply for every job you re interested in whether or not you meet all the requirements listed The job ad is usually a wish list and most employers often don t expect to get everything they ask for Don t let the lack of a degree get in your way You are the sum total of all of your experiences Never include salary requirements in business whoever mentions money first usually loses Wait until the subject comes up and the potential employer thinks that you are terrific and wants to employ you To get a head start research the company beforehand check out their website or even visit the location covertly perhaps as a potential member of a sports club fitness centre to get a feel for the place and whether you would be happy working there distance to travel etc A good CV is targeted on the specific job or career area for which you are applying and shows the relevant skills and abilities that you have to offer Make it a good fit A busy employer or manager will have a pile of CV s and letters of application to get through Some employers may spend as little as 30 seconds skimming your CV and if it doesn t grab the attention in the first 10 seconds it will not get read Your CV is not about you It s about the benefits your future employer would get from employing you A good CV should be tailored to the specific job that you are applying for What do you think they are looking for in an employee What skills does the specific job you are applying for require Make a list of the things that you are really good at and what makes you different from the rest Short CV s get read long CV s get binned so keep your CV brief and to the point Rarely go back beyond 10 years as that is history You need current qualifications experience and skills to fit into the future industry trends and challenges so stay current by attending workshops conferences etc A good CV should not give the reader indigestion Break it down into small digestible chunks It should be clearly laid out and not cramped Make it easy to read with your personal details a personal statement work experience achievements education and hobbies listed in a logical order A good CV is merely a snapshot of your credentials it should leave the reader wanting to know more about you not less THE CV LAYOUT GENERAL Your CV should be accurate in content spelling and grammar Every word counts and even the simplest mistake could be enough to make or break your application Restrict your CV to no more than two sides of A4 paper and use high quality paper e g Conqueror 100 grams to set you apart from the rest When preparing your application letter CV etc choose a professional font I personally like Calibri point size 11 for most of the text with perhaps size 14 for the section headers Don t forget to justify the text for a good visual appearance You do not have to use the term Curriculum Vitae just put your name and personal details at the top of the page including your email address main contact number Make it really easy for them to contact you employers rarely call twice 4

Page 5

Present your section headers and text in a logical order use bullet points wherever possible and have plenty of white space This allows the hiring manager to skim the document easily and find your significant achievements without having to wade through lots of unnecessary information THE SECTIONS OF A CV Your CV needs to have at least the following sections PERSONAL DETAILS Normally these would be your name address date of birth now not obligatory telephone number and email address a sensible one Put your name in the centre of the page with the other details underneath YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENT Start with a personal statement tailored to the role in question In one short and succinct paragraph explain who you are what you re offering and what you re looking for This should make you stand out from the crowd Try to include the specific skills that the employer is looking for if you can Some good words might be Reliable confident hard working responsible keen to learn Words to leave out boring might include Excellent communication skills demonstrate instead highly motivated really goal driven and independent Never indicate that you might want to set up your own business in the future even if you do as this would be the kiss of death WORK EXPERIENCE This section should include all of your relevant work experience with the most recent first Include the job title the name of the organisation time spent in the post and your key responsibilities If you have very little employment history then perhaps leave this section out Also leave out anything over 10 years ago it s what current skills you have now that s most important Personally I am always very impressed by applicants who have begun on the lowest rungs of the ladder e g waitressing working in a bar etc to both earn money and to understand the importance of good customer care skills This is invaluable work experience that looks good on a CV ACHIEVEMENTS This is your chance to show how your previous experience has given you the skills needed to make you a suitable candidate List all of your relevant skills and achievements backing them up with examples if you can and perhaps how you might apply these to the new role if you are successful EDUCATION Your educational experience and achievements should be listed in this section with the most recent events at the top along with dates the type of qualification and the grades that you achieved Show any courses that you have undertaken that are relevant to the role Identify your past achievements and be prepared to bring attention to them 5

Page 6

If you didn t get a degree emphasise your actual experience The more experience you have doing the job the less important a degree especially if you are over 40 Any reasons for a career break or change of jobs should also be included HOBBIES INTERESTS You don t have to include hobbies and interests in your CV so if you don t have any don t feel like you have to include them However mentioning any relevant ones that could help you to stand out from the crowd might be helpful as well as giving you something to talk about during an interview If in doubt ask yourself will they help you get the job If not it s best to leave them out REFERENCES References are credible people that you have worked with in the past such as professors previous employers etc who have seen your work and can positively support you if required They are usually pleased to help Always ask them before listing them Please would you give me a reference If you are fortunate enough to get the job out of common courtesy always thank your references afterwards as they probably got you the job Also you might need them again Employers will normally check with your references that you can actually do the job offered Keep in mind that however much you hated your previous job or employer they will probably be asked for a reference about you Therefore always leave a job graciously and remain on good terms with a previous employer Nothing could scupper your chances more if they are contacted and remembered you for the wrong reasons You do not have to list their details on the CV and it is probably better to state at the bottom that references are available on request ADDITIONAL TIPS Poor spelling or grammar is the quickest way to get rejected Could you re write a sentence more concisely Read everything very carefully before sending it on Read your CV as though you were the employer and think again about the content and layout Then read it again Your letter of application is also very important and you should spend an equal amount of time preparing this Make it well laid out and relatively brief but try to show the potential employer why they would really benefit by employing you If you are sending by email send an extremely well written three paragraphs content that summarises why they might like to interview you Be extremely polite and concise Say that you do hope that they will consider you for an interview and add your contact details at the bottom In an email whatever you do don t SHOUT write in uppercase except for the subject header This could perhaps be something like RE JOB APPLICATION FRED BLOGS Attach your CV as either an MS Office word Doc or perhaps a PDF The former would probably be better but check that the layout is not changed by sending in Word A PDF is more stable in this respect as the layout will not change at all and most people have Adobe Reader 6

Page 7

Although the CV s is not a legal document should an employer pick up even a suggestion of falsehood you will be rapidly rejected On the other hand an application form which you have signed forms part of your contract of employment and is a legal document including qualifications and previous job titles that you have listed so make sure the details are accurate THE SELECTION PROCESS If you are sending your CV by post don t fold it perhaps instead put it in a full size A4 envelope so that it doesn t arrive creased Don t forget to send a well written covering letter Not everyone will select candidates the way that I do However my system of selection is very thorough and has always provided me with outstanding staff that stay in the job Other employers may do things differently but I share with you my approaches as they may help From my own experience I always ask for email CV s Many are very sloppily prepared and go straight into the bin I allocate about 30 seconds max for each one and after a quick look at the CV put it into an immediate category box NO THANKS POSSIBLES or STRONG POSSIBLES When the applications are all in about 4 5 days max I then take another look at the STRONG POSSIBLES I have often received around 200 applications for one post following a very wellwritten job ad so in order to be selected first impressions are definitely important I find it amazing that a good job ad will attract applicants from all over the world e g Europe India etc Just a reminder that your future job can be filled from anywhere on earth I always thank each applicant for sending me their information and ask them to wait out If they are NO THANKS candidates then I inform them immediately in the nicest possible way that they have not been selected on this occasion Otherwise they may remain desperately hopeful Sometimes I get a reply saying thank you This is rare but I always put such people in a for future consideration file and keep them in mind mainly because of their courtesy I will probably then select the top 10 for possible interview and rate them either three four or five stars I then will call them usually in the early evening to conduct a short informal telephone interview around five ten minutes to get a first impression trying to find out what they sound like e g good communication skills attitude and to find out how motivated they are for the job on offer If they don t want the job more that 7 10 then I don t consider them So be prepared for a telephone interview they can come out of the blue Don t be surprised if they call you in the evening or at weekends In case you are out record a brief professional message on your answering service and check your messages regularly and get back immediately if they call you Never let anyone else especially children answer your phone Based upon the telephone interview I will then either immediately invite and arrange an interview time or give the potential candidate a wait out Following a good telephone interview when I get to the actual interview I feel that I already know the candidate quite well 7

Page 8

If my under consideration candidates are not actually chosen for interview I always thank them and let them know that I they are still under consideration I am very careful to try to keep sufficient applicants available as some of the best may also be looking for another post at the same time and may even turn down a job offer This always hurts but is an inevitable fact of life I am very thorough in my selection process to get the very best My staff are the most important asset of any business Then I provide good training and support so that they can grow Consequently they often they stay with me sometimes for many years This is all down to the selection process If I select the wrong person I am then stuck with them and it all ends in tears Of course many employers will not be as thorough as I am in selecting a job applicant which is to your advantage So make sure that you are fully prepared even if they are not THE INTERVIEW PROCESS Interviewing is 90 preparation and 10 application so be well prepared and you will feel far more confident and relaxed during the actual interview Prepare a professional portfolio of your qualifications certificates and achievements etc beforehand in an attractive folder to show the interviewer This will show that you are very well prepared and professional a very good start Be on time if you are late you will be judged as disorganised and unreliable so check your travel time beforehand You will have a limited time slot for your interview so don t be late Being stuck in traffic prior to an interview is not a good experience If you have a serious travel problem phone and let them know immediately When you arrive impress the reception security staff with your politeness and good communication skills if it was one of my interviews they will be scoring you Remember the interviewers name write it down if not sure First impressions are critical studies suggest that a first impression is gained in the first seven seconds Dress to impress and invest in the best clothes My advice for a top job is to cover up any tattoos and definitely no face piercings outlandish hair styles etc I once interviewed someone who had a great CV and looked quite presentable during the interview When she was selected for the job she turned up with added face piercings and a weird punk hairstyle looking completely different My client was a blue chip company where this appearance was inappropriate and I made sure that she was gone within 2 3 days The interviewer will probably start with low key questions to put you at ease Try to gauge the interviewer s style and quickly get onto their wavelength at this stage Listen carefully for what they are really looking for in an ideal candidate Then answer accordingly this is your chance to impress Demonstrate good communication skills an upright posture a firm handshake good eye contact and occasional head nods to acknowledge understanding Talk clearly confidently and smile occasionally Don t assume that because you have good qualifications that you will be offered the position It is also very much about your personality and how you come over to the interviewer that really counts and don t forget a positive attitude is everything 8

Page 9

They the interviewers will probably want to know Your education training work experience Your motivation and attitude Your ability to do the job How you would fit in with the current team If offered the job how much you would like to do it out of a score of ten For me anyone offering less than seven would not be employed This is always my last question Review and role play the most frequently asked questions such as Why are you leaving your job Why are you interested in this position What do you know about our company Also have answers to the questions that might make you squirm e g Why were you terminated Why do you have gaps in employment Why did you stay at your last company so long or so little etc Here are 20 possible interview questions 1 How did you hear about this position 2 Why are you interested in working for us 3 What do you think that you can you offer us that someone else cannot 4 What really motivates you 5 What are your career goals 6 Let s discuss your resume 7 Why are you looking for a new job 8 What are your main strengths 9 What are your weaknesses if any 10 Where do you see yourself in 5 10 years time 11 Why do you want to leave your current employment 12 Why was there a gap in your employment 13 Are you willing to relocate 14 Are you willing to travel can get here early 15 Tell me about an accomplishment you are most proud of 16 Would you be willing to work holidays weekends 17 How do you handle pressure 18 What are your hobbies 19 What is your availability 20 What questions do you have for me 9

Page 10

Remember an interview is a two way process For every interview write down at least 5 key questions to ask the interviewer at the end of the interview such as What is it that you are looking for in the ideal candidate What is the likely work pattern Future job opportunities etc At the very end of the interview make sure that you thank the interviewer for seeing you and that you hope that you will be successful Also try to find out when you might hear about the result of the interview Be a very polite final impressions are also important Follow up with a thank you for seeing me email after the interview and confirm your interest and enthusiasm for the post If you actually get the job if you do all of the above you should do thank the employer for selecting you say how pleased you are to be selected and confirm acceptance immediately otherwise they may think that you have accepted another job and are no longer interested Remember this is the most critical and nerve racking time for both the candidate and the employer so reply immediately All of the above may seem to be a lot of time consuming work it is However this is the only way to find and get your ideal job If you get it right you will be very happy Remember that very few employees find their ideal job so make sure that you take the time and trouble to get as near to it as possible Good luck EXAMPLE PROCEDURES MATERIALS On the following pages I have provided some examples of actual recruiting procedures and materials that I have used in the past along with some examples of interview procedures letter of application CV s etc Other companies will have developed their own procedures and materials which may be different from my own Nevertheless they may perhaps help to guide you 10
