HOW DATA IS RESHAPING THE WORKPLACE

Page 2

Working practices are changing During the pandemic, many employees had to work from home to comply with safety guidelines. However as we emerge from the pandemic, a recent study by WeWork and Workplace Intelligence found that the majority of employees want access to an oce space outside of their home. Employees cite a number of benefits oered by their workplace, such as the ability to focus and collaborate. This is where hybrid working comes in. Hybrid models allow employees to combine working from home with working from an oce, in a collaborative space or other locations. According to a recent survey by CIPD, many employers are introducing a hybrid work model to enable employees more flexible access to properties. Businesses want to provide their people with choice, enabling them to come to one of their properties and choose the workspace that best suits their needs. However, businesses need to understand how and when employees are using their workplaces. Acquiring and maintaining workspaces is expensive. Space is at a premium for most organisations, yet it is often one of the most wasted resources. Empty oces, desks, and meeting rooms have been a common sight in buildings for many years. This could become much more common if hybrid working is unmanaged. Businesses need new space management solutions to minimise waste and get the most value from the property. Space management solutions that pair smartphone and smart building technologies are proving to be eective and attractive. It’s still very important to physically be in touch with one another because collaboration isn’t always a planned activity. - Tim Cook, CEO Apple 2 Report

Leveraging Data AnalyticsData analytics is changing how we make decisions in many areas including how we design, plan, manage, and maintain workplaces. Modern and smart workplaces employ digital systems and a wide array of sensors to generate large volumes of highly valuable data. They make real-time and historical data about a wide range of areas available for analysis.Whether a single facility or multiple buildings in a portfolio, data analytics provides a comprehensive and refined understanding of how workplaces are used, enabling managers, owners, and investors to compare performance and make better informed decisions.Bidvest Noonan’s smart building solution captures data and presents it in a way that allows us to pinpoint ineciencies and seize opportunities for improvement. We capture valuable occupancy data about how our workplace, meeting rooms, common spaces, and parking spots are used. This data allows us to optimise oce layouts to increase productivity and eciency and repurpose underused spaces.4 Report

Data enabling workplace sustainabilityFor many businesses, operating more sustainably is a priority, and organisations are progressively committing to ambitious sustainability goals. A survey of 2500 UK companies carried out by HSBC found that 66% planned improving internal practices and 63% planned updating buildings and equipment to improve their environmental performance.Technology-enabled workplaces are generating and using data about environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, energy use, and occupancy data to improve the environmental performance of the workplace. Companies have begun to cut costs and energy consumption by using sensors to measure ambient light and heat to use the minimum energy necessary to produce optimum conditions.Bidvest Noonan’s smart building solution uses sensors and systems to identify and power down unoccupied rooms, spaces, or even entire floors. Lighting, heating, and air-conditioning systems only switch on when people are detected. This is enabling us to achieve cost and carbon reductions while providing a healthy, pleasant, and productive environment. In March 2021 Bidvest Noonan signed a carbon pledge which will see the business take bold steps to improve its sustainability.8 Report
