Tarragon Theatre acknowledges that we all are a part of alarger ecosystem within our community, Tkaronto, where ourtheatre lives and operates – and that we also commitourselves and energize our audiences to continually reflect onand respond to our relationship to the land around us. Thiscountry has been cared for by generations of First Nations,Inuit and Métis Nations, and the land on which Tarragon restsand is able to share this story has been cherished andprotected by the Anishnabeg, the Haudenosaunee, theWendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.Toronto is a word that originates from the Mohawk word“Tkaronto,” meaning “the place in the water where the treesare standing,” which is said to refer to the wooden stakes thatwere used as fishing weirs in the narrows of local riversystems by the Haudenosaunee and Wendat. The paths westill walk today, from Davenport to Dupont, are built on theportage trails first established and walked by Indigenouspeoples. It is in the spirit of being on the portage route that weinvoke our local Indigenous oral history – though covered upby the industrial progress of Toronto – and maintain thatthose stories are not lost. We are committed to engaging with these communities inmeaningful ways that open dialogue. We look towards arecognition of our shared humanity to create deepercommunity connection and accountability. Tarragon’srecognition of the contributions of Indigenous peoples to thisland is directly connected to our promise to meet thechallenge of Truth and Reconciliation: making ourcommitment real in our work and through our communitybuilding. A friend of Tarragon’s, we are so warmed to welcomeback Rosa Laborde and her brilliant piece aboutfriendships, endings, beginnings, and transformations –Interior Design. Are we making over a home, or are wemaking over ourselves? What happens when friendshipsreach an impasse? What happens when we grow apartand can’t find our way back to each other. And whathappens if do find our way back? Friendships, especiallyfemale friendships, are a source of wisdom, laughter, clarity, comfort in times of discomfort, a looking glass intimes of uncertainty, a soothing balm in times ofagitation, a catalyst in times of stagnation, and a home intimes of unrest. In her 5th play at Tarragon, Laborde explores all thesequestions and ideas through wit, love, humour, forgiveness, and a kind of sharp honesty that only agirlfriend can give. With an all-female cast and creativeteam, led by the incomparable Kat Sandler, we are over the moon to bring you this production as our firstExtraspace production of the 2024/25 season. You’re in for a journey. And as they say in the world ofself-development: the only way out is through. Are youready for a renovation? See you on the other side. PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTEWhat is it that makes a friendship last? This question consumed me throughout the writing ofthis play. A time marked by a global pandemic when wewere, for the most part, unable to physically see ourfriends. The lockdown happened to coincide with thebirth of my daughter, and suddenly I was deep in the wildreorganization of personality that intense life changestend to precipitate. To be more in my miraculous present,I had to let go, finally, all the endings I’d never fullymourned. While I’ve been lucky enough to have many close friends, there have also been losses, some jarring rifts, somealmost imperceptible drifts… I do have a best friend of more than thirty years who willread these words and know it’s her I’m referring to and Ican hear exactly how she’ll say my name when sherealizes that I’ve written about her – a mix ofembarrassment and exasperation but also warmth – shemay feel emotional and blush a little but she’ll also waveher hand at her eyes in that way she does as though onecould fan a tear away. She is the coolest person I know, tough but kind, irreverent but vulnerable, and is also mymemory – for better or worse – I mean, must wecatalogue all my regrets? I asked her what is mostvaluable to her about our friendship, and she said: We tell each other the truth. Even when it’s hard. (note continued on next page)5

Page 7

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTESo, anecdotally, it seems that a good friend doesn’tsupport the façade; the you that you feel comfortablepresenting to the world, rather, to quote Oscar Wilde: “A true friend stabs you in the front”, helps you coursecorrect, and witnesses your evolution. A lastingfriendship grows with you. This play is for all friends everywhere, the new and theold, the short-lived and the life-long. To my eclectic group of kindreds, you keep me moored in the storms. Most especially to my Shmoops. Thank you for being mywitness.Rosa Laborde6Photo by Dahlia Katz

DIRECTOR’S NOTEInterior Design is a story about friendship, but it’s alsoa story about women. When I started writing and directing, I mostly toldfunny, fast-paced, high-stakes, inherently male stories.I had grown up with art made from a distinctly malegaze, so I felt that was what audiences wanted to see.At the time, male characters seemed funnier, morestraightforward, more dramatic (somehow...), and itfelt easier to wrap them up tidily. It took me a while to realize that what I actuallywanted was to tell stories about messy, complex, dramatic, hilarious women, and the women of InteriorDesign are anything but “tidy”. When I first read Rosa’s gorgeous script, I felt instantrecognition - I’ve known these women all my life;they’re my girlfriends, my mother, my sister, my aunts, the women I went to school with, the women I workwith - who am I kidding - they’re me. So often, femalecharacters are reduced to just one archetype (mother, daughter, wife, victim, etc) but Rosa has allowed themto exist in all their problematic, magnificent, emotional, ridiculous, contradictory glory, to just… BE.(note continued on next page)8

Page 10

DIRECTOR’S NOTEInterior Design uses the metaphor of home-renovation(and home-renovation reality television shows) torepresent both the shiny, neatly designed exterior weoften present to the world as women, and thecluttered, dusty, memory-filled spaces we occupy withour closest, oldest friends. It asks us to consider how aseemingly-small event in these women’s lives affectsthe overall design and trajectory of their decades-longfriendship.It’s been an absolute gift to help tell this funny, fast-paced, high stakes, inherently female story with thebrilliant Rosa Laborde (from whom I’ve learned somuch), our incredible cast, production team andeveryone at Tarragon. We hope you have as good atime watching these women and their stories as we didbringing them to life.Kat Sandler9Photo by Dahlia Katz
