Tarragon Theatre acknowledges that we all are a part of alarger ecosystem within our community, Tkaronto, where ourtheatre lives and operates – and that we also commitourselves and energize our audiences to continually reflect onand respond to our relationship to the land around us. Thiscountry has been cared for by generations of First Nations,Inuit and Métis Nations, and the land on which Tarragon restsand is able to share this story has been cherished andprotected by the Anishnabeg, the Haudenosaunee, theWendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.Toronto is a word that originates from the Mohawk word“Tkaronto,” meaning “the place in the water where the treesare standing,” which is said to refer to the wooden stakes thatwere used as fishing weirs in the narrows of local riversystems by the Haudenosaunee and Wendat. The paths westill walk today, from Davenport to Dupont, are built on theportage trails first established and walked by Indigenouspeoples. It is in the spirit of being on the portage route that weinvoke our local Indigenous oral history – though covered upby the industrial progress of Toronto – and maintain that thosestories are not lost. We are committed to engaging with these communities inmeaningful ways that open dialogue. We look towards arecognition of our shared humanity to create deepercommunity connection and accountability. Tarragon’srecognition of the contributions of Indigenous peoples to thisland is directly connected to our promise to meet thechallenge of Truth and Reconciliation: making ourcommitment real in our work and through our communitybuilding. Please do check out the QR codes in the lobby to find out how you can extend your support.TARRAGON THEATRE LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT4
What a pleasure to welcome you back to the theatre, and for the first show of our electric season ofpremieres, Goblin:Macbeth. We are thrilled to usher in a brand new theatre yearwith the return of Spontaneous Theatre’s unique blendof comic mastery and classical interpretation. After itssuccess in Calgary and Stratford, we cannot wait for youto experience this show’s theatrical beauty throughlaughter, play, and a new take on Shakespeare’smayhem-filled classic. Although they come to us with ahealthy dose of mischief, we are happy to host them asthey take home in the Big Smoke! The Goblins are unlike any being we have had in ourbuilding, and they have taken over every nook andcranny in search of a better understanding of themeaning of theatre. What is this “theatre”? Guided bytheir curiosity and yours, we get to experience thepower of performance and language in surprising waysthat ultimately uncover our own relationship to thismagnificent art form. As you lean forward and enjoy this show, we lookforward to seeing you throughout the season todiscover the incredible artists coming to the stage.Thank you for being with us and sharing the breadth ofexceptional work coming from our country’s backyard.Bon spectacle!Mike Payette & Lisa LiArtistic Director & Executive DirectorWELCOME TO GOBLIN:MACBETH5
DIRECTOR’S NOTEThere are certain Shakespeare plays which seem toprovoke an immediate question when revealed as part ofa theatre’s season announcement. Hamlet, Richard III,King Lear and Macbeth are immediately met with,“Who’s playing ‘X’?”, as though the potential of theproduction might be pre-judged by the casting of thelead role. What if we didn’t know who was playingMacbeth? Or what human was inhabiting any role, forthat matter? If we could effectively remove, conceal, orobscure the persona of the actor, could we shift thespotlight from player back to text? The idea of Goblins doing Shakespeare seemed obviousto me. I have a profound love of words, as well as abackground in mask work, improvisation andmisbehaviour. The older I get, the weirder I like mytheatre. As the notion for Goblin:Macbeth was gestating,I began making discreet inquiries with artist-friends. Iwas consistently met with one of two strong reactions: “So, you mean I would play Macbeth, but ideally no onein the audience would ever know it was me playing thepart? – NO THANK YOU.” OR “So, you mean I would play Macbeth, but ideally no onein the audience would ever know it was me playing thepart? SIGN ME UP!” (note continued on the next page)6
DIRECTOR’S NOTEDiscussions with the latter group revealed a strongdesire for anonymity that inspires a total freedom todisappear inside a character, and to exploreShakespeare’s text without the pressure of beingevaluated in advance. In rehearsals we found a newpermission to play, question and explore with a lovingirreverence. It gave us a new appreciation forShakespeare’s work. The Goblins come to the text with curiosity, but nopreconceived notions. To them, Macbeth is notShakespeare’s most unsettling and cursed play – theyalready come from a world where fairies, ghosts, witches and magic are pedestrian. Our Goblins are ableto push past all that phantasmagoria to highlight ahumour that is so often glossed over in humanproductions that favour a macabre atmosphere. OurGoblins reveal that to pair tragedy with humour, asShakespeare intended, is a profoundly human impulsethat highlights the horror, while allowing us to bear it. Inclosing: I actively discourage you from seeking out theidentity of our players, if you don’t know already.(Secrets are hard to keep.) Let the Goblins work theirmagic on you; let the play hit you in new ways. And if it’syour first time seeing Macbeth, then our apologies – it’sall downhill from here.7
