Tarragon Theatre acknowledges that we all are a part of alarger ecosystem within our community, Tkaronto, where ourtheatre lives and operates – and that we also commit ourselvesand in turn energize our audiences to continually reflect on andrespond to our relationship to the land around us. This countryhas been cared for by generations of First Nations, Inuit andMétis Nations, and the land on which Tarragon rests and is ableto share this story has been cherished and protected by, theAnishnabeg, the Haudenosaunee, the Wendat, and theMississaugas of the Credit First Nation.Toronto is a word that originates from the Mohawk word“Tkaronto,” meaning “the place in the water where the treesare standing,” which is said to refer to the wooden stakes thatwere used as fishing weirs in the narrows of local river systemsby the Haudenosaunee and Wendat. The paths we still walktoday, from Davenport to Dupont, are built on the portagetrails first established and walked by Indigenous peoples. It isin the spirit of being on the portage route that we invoke ourlocal Indigenous oral history – though covered up by theindustrial progress of Toronto – and maintain that thosestories are not lost. We are committed to engaging with these communities inmeaningful ways that open dialogue, while acknowledging ourown history. We look towards a recognition of our sharedhumanity to create deeper community connection andaccountability. Tarragon’s recognition of the contributions andthe historic significance of Indigenous peoples to this land isdirectly connected to our promise to meet the challenge ofTruth and Reconciliation. Making our commitment real in ourwork and through our community building. Please do check outthe QR codes in the lobby to find out how you can extend yoursupport.Tarragon Theatre land acknowledgement

I come from a line of travelling artists. My abuelo was a photographer in Juarez, and even aftermoving his family just across the border to El Paso, hecontinued his work. Driving South to photograph nightclubs, parties, slices of life, then driving North to his home andfamily as the sun rose in the morning. My dad travelled the world as a musician, and racked uphours of time at border security as he flew back and forthbetween Los Angeles, where he worked playing drums forsome of the world’s most famous artists, and Vancouver, where my mom and I lived our lives, uninterrupted. Both these men have since left this world, but I’m still here, fighting my drowsiness from the 3 hours time changebetween Vancouver and Toronto to write you this note.As we move across the surface of this earth, across borders, mountains, rivers, through languages, ways of being, families, communities, it would be easy to think only of what is lost. Abook left on a hotel nightstand. A language droppedsomewhere between El Paso and Vancouver. But there is also a story to tell of tremendous abundance.I used to think of the distance between myself and those whocame before me as dividing lines. I now think of those lineslike a string on a tin can, an imperfect way to whisper theslices of my life spread across this stolen land back in time tothem. The journeys of my abuelo and father have given memore to love, more to see, more to share. Not ‘here’ and ‘there’ but just here, just here, now.Christine QuintanaPlaywright’s note
