Tarragon Theatre acknowledges that we all are a part of alarger ecosystem within our community, Tkaronto, where ourtheatre lives and operates – and that we also commit ourselvesand energize our audiences to continually reflect on andrespond to our relationship to the land around us. This countryhas been cared for by generations of First Nations, Inuit andMétis Nations, and the land on which Tarragon rests and is ableto share this story has been cherished and protected by theAnishnabeg, the Haudenosaunee, the Wendat, and theMississaugas of the Credit First Nation.Toronto is a word that originates from the Mohawk word“Tkaronto,” meaning “the place in the water where the treesare standing,” which is said to refer to the wooden stakes thatwere used as fishing weirs in the narrows of local river systemsby the Haudenosaunee and Wendat. The paths we still walktoday, from Davenport to Dupont, are built on the portagetrails first established and walked by Indigenous peoples. It isin the spirit of being on the portage route that we invoke ourlocal Indigenous oral history – though covered up by theindustrial progress of Toronto – and maintain that thosestories are not lost. We are committed to engaging with these communities inmeaningful ways that open dialogue. We look towards arecognition of our shared humanity to create deepercommunity connection and accountability. Tarragon’srecognition of the contributions of Indigenous peoples to thisland is directly connected to our promise to meet the challengeof Truth and Reconciliation: making our commitment real in ourwork and through our community building. Welcome to the final opening of our 2023-24 season, Come Home – The Legend of Daddy Hall! How fitting to besharing this story of family, journey and resilience in thespringtime with the world around us in bloom – a powerfulreminder of renewal and growth. This uniquely local story, told by seasoned playwright Audrey Dwyer, follows DaddyHall’s path through time and across generations as Johntraverses the land from north to south and north again. As anIndigenous Black man, his is an extraordinary story of loveand survival. And it has a very immediate connection toTarragon, since we know he travelled along the portageroute where Tarragon Theatre stands today, and that hevisited the Tollkeeper’s booth just around the corner. With a remarkable team of creators, including sounddesigners and composers Spy Denomme-Welch andCatherine Magowan performing live, you are in for a visualand sonic treat! As our 2023-23 season draws to a close, we want to thankyou for sharing the journey with us. It’s been a pleasure andprivilege to have you with us each step, and production, ofour way. It’s risk-taking audience members like you who giveour work purpose. With deep gratitude, we wish you Bon Spectacle!Mike Payette and Andrea VagianosArtistic Director & Managing DirectorWelcome to the show
John Hall walked in this very neighbourhood hundreds ofyears ago. He lived throughout Ontario. He was marriedmultiple times, had many children, escaped enslavementtwice (crossing through deep bodies of water), was in the War of 1812, and died at a very old age. My researchprovided numerous tales with major differences and a fewsimilarities. One thing was made clear: John spent milestravelling, searching for home.I began to think about John’s relationship with his family, the land he lived on and the relationships he made along theway. He was guided by those he met and surely, those wholeft him far too early. I considered John’s long life and theways certain relationships were severed. It made me think of ancestral lineage and what it means to cross over. Can your steps from life to death be legendary? I’m thankful to have so many friends along the way who havebrought their fierce creative forces to this story. To theactors and designers, thank you for stepping into this worldand making it your own. To Richard, thank you for bringingJohn Hall to my attention. Spy and Catherine, thank you foryour music, creativity, and jokes. Monique, thank you foryour consultation, brilliant heart, and passion. Mike, thankyou for giving me time, for your layers of imagination andgood-good words. Sandy and Tammy, you are John’sdescendants! Thank you for your stories and for sharing yourthoughts with me. Lastly, thank you to John Hall for your big, beautiful heartand for inspiring me to keep going no matter what. You’re achampion! May you truly rest in power and peace.Audrey DwyerPlaywright’s note
Special thanks to...Audrey would like to thank:Mike Payette, Andrea Vagianos, Richard Rose, Joanna Falck,Myekah Payne, Jeff Ho and the Tarragon Staff, TammyMeggitt, Sandy Inkster, Spy Dénommé Welch, CatherineMagowan, Monique Mojica, Lindsay Lachance, and all of theartists who participated in workshops and the AcousticVersion.Additional thanks:Pura Fé, Friends from Six Nations from Awkwesasne, Joyce Zemans, Erick Fournier for Assistance in FightDirection.
A few months after moving to Toronto, I had the fortune ofre-connecting with Audrey Dwyer - Tarragon’s former UrjoKareda resident, Assistant Artistic Director, and playwright ofthe acoustic and musical version of Come Home - The Legendof Daddy Hall. Commissioned by Richard Rose, this audiodrama was inspired by the heroic historic story of John Hall.A standalone and moving offer as part of the Acoustic Seriesin 2021, the piece gave us a glimpse into one man’s longjourney of life and survival as a Black and Indigenous man inthe 18th and 19th centuries. It was in our encounter that Audrey and I unearthed a lotmore questions about what this piece was asking of usartistically and of it being shared in this moment. There aremany unknowns to John and the material we do have is ofteninconsistent. The curiosity in filling the gaps leads to trulyunique dramaturgical opportunities that weave history andfiction together in beautiful ways. That is what hasgrounded Audrey and her pursuit to uplift the charming, often self-consuming, always surviving humanity of whoJohn may have been.It is the holes in John Hall’s story that led us to investigatethe very question of what made John legendary. If we putaside the historical signposts of his life, who is the man weare left with when he is forced to reconcile his livedrelationships and experiences while, just maybe, trying tocreate a bridge into the ancestral realm?(note continued on next page)Director’s Note
What I have loved about this re-invigorated and complexmulti-year development of Come Home is theacquiescence to time’s flow that is embedded in the piece.Grounded in diasporic and Indigenous dramaturgy, theprocess has been enriched by land-based work andancestral connection. The process has opened up the waytime - the present, the past, and the forever - braids withinitself. The acceptance of that informs the play for all of us inthe creation, and it is the blueprint to channelling it for theaudience. We can all be reminded of moments that feltendless to those that fleet yet remain so full. And when weconsider that over a century of life, there is no way toencapsulate all of the moments. Those that pop up in thefinal breaths are myriad - memories that may spark joy, prompt remorse, be unresolved, or show courage. So, it’s in the spirit of opening up the scope of history-meets-drama, that Audrey asks us to look at the unwrittencharacters in John’s life; the women who anchored him andthe children lost. Or the parents who brought their teachingsearly in John’s youth before being separated from him andare now extending their ancestral arms beckoning him togently cross over. And to the descendants of John, existing today in 2024 who, in different and parallel ways, are part of the cycle of exhaustively fighting for freedom. That unique lens takes us out of a history lesson, and into thenow, asking us to remember our connectivity to those thatcame before and their encouragement for us to keep movingforward in every way we can.(note continued on next page)Director’s Note
The result of Audrey’s intense respect to the lives we don’tknow, and to the immortalization of John Hall, is anembroidered tapestry. An ancestral fantasia that invites us tore-discover the moments that shape us and ultimately leavetheir own mark in making us all legendary.Much gratitude to the many who contributed to this moment. From the archives to the descendants of John Hall whocreated a significant touchstone of humanity for us, toMonique Mojica who moved us through the spiritual andliteral maps travelled with a felt hand always on the back.Grateful for the cast who have embodied generations ofconnection between our cultures, and for the creatives andcrew who have given us an environment to fully embrace thismulti-dimensional world. And to you all for being a part of this voyage. For sharing andexperiencing stories that define our ability to come togetherin spite of dividing times. And for those we know walking inbetween worlds, or those in your life who are and have beenloved, lived, and are still among us vibing on the other side.Bon spectacle,Mike PayetteDirector’s Note
