IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR VETERANS BENEFITSIn every act of service, in every sacrifi ce, and in every upheld oath, there’s a story that deserves reverence and remembrance. Our Honoring Service Planner is our humble offering to the brave Veterans, Police Offi cers, Fire Fighters, and Healthcare workers who have served our families and our communities.Veterans, service members, spouses, and dependents may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery if they meet the requirements. If a veteran received a dishonorable discharge, they may not be eligible for VA benefi ts. Eligible spouses and dependents may be buried, even if they predecease the Veteran.ELIGIBILITYFUNERALHONORSUpon request, VA can arrange for military funeral honors to be provided at the burial or memorial service of an eligible veteran. The funeral honors may include the folding and presentation of the United States fl ag, the playing of Taps, and a rifl e detail. The funeral honors are provided by a detail from the veteran’s branch of service, if available.
BURIAL ALLOWANCETo be eligible for a burial allowance, the veteran must have died as a result of a service-connected disability, while receiving VA care, or while traveling with proper authorization at VA’s expense. The burial allowance for a non-service-connected death is $300, and $2,000 for a death connected to military service. VA burial allowances are partial reimbursements of an eligible Veteran’s burial and funeral costs.In addition to VA national cemeteries, there are state veterans cemeteries, tribal veterans cemeteries, and private cemeteries that may off er burial options for veterans. Some state veteran’s cemeteries may have residency requirements for burial eligibility. MILITARY FUNERAL HONORS FOR CREMATED REMAINSIf a veteran’s remains are cremated, they are still eligible for military funeral honors. The funeral honors may include the folding and presentation of the United States fl ag, the playing of Taps, and a rifl e detail. The funeral honors are provided by a detail from the veteran’s branch of service, if available.VA provides urns for the cremated remains of eligible veterans. The urns are available in various styles and materials and can be personalized with emblems representing the veteran’s branch of service. VA can also provide a burial fl ag for the cremated remains of an eligible veteran.CREMATIONOPTIONSIMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
Veterans may be eligible for a plot or interment allowance to cover the cost of the plot (gravesite) or interment. The VA National Cemetery Administration provides a dignifi ed burial and lasting memorial for eligible Veterans and their family members. The spouse or dependent of a veteran buried in a national cemetery may also be eligible for burial in the same cemetery.PLOT OR INTERMENT ALLOWANCEIf the veteran is buried in a VA national cemetery, some or all of the cost of transporting the deceased may be reimbursed. VA provides an allowance for the cost of transporting a veteran’s remains for burial in a national cemetery. VA will pay up to $2,000 toward burial expenses for deaths on or after September 11, 2001, or up to $1,500 for deaths prior to September 11, 2001.TRANSPORTATION REIMBURSEMENTTRANSPORTATION REIMBURSEMENTIMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
VA provides headstones and markers for the graves of eligible veterans. The headstones and markers are available in various styles and materials and can be personalized with emblems representing the veteran’s branch of service. VA provides a medallion that can be affi xed to an existing privately purchased headstone or marker to signify the veteran’s military service.HEADSTONES AND MARKERSVA can provide a Presidential Memorial Certifi cate (PMC) to honor the memory of a veteran. The PMC is a gold-embossed certifi cate signed by the current President of the United States, expressing the nation’s recognition of the veteran’s service. The pre-need determination can help with funeral planning and ensure that the veteran’s wishes are carried out.
