Self-Awareness is a Gift Do you know someone who speaks or does something at the least appropriate time? Maybe they are loud, or they appear rude and don’t seem to consider others. Haven’t you wished for this person to see themself the way others do? The definition of Self-Awareness is a person’s knowledge of their own character, motives, and desires or more simply put, the knowledge of one’s own personality. Some people are more self-aware than others and continue to constantly sharpen their knowledge by taking the time to study their own behavior. They want to gain a better of understanding of who they are and why they behave the way they do. Being self-aware gives a person more control over themselves and allows them to see how their behavior affects those around them. It is extremely important to those in leadership positions. Understanding your strengths and weaknesses and how they affect your leadership style can have a great impact on your success as a leader. For some, the journey to a higher level of awareness can be a difficult one. It requires us to not only learn about weak areas in our character but to accept them as well. This is a necessary step if we are to grow because understanding something like the quality of our communication with others can lead us to better connections with those we lead or love. I want to give you three actions you can take to increase your own self-awareness: 1. Journal – Write out what is important to you, your values, purpose, and priorities. Include your feelings and your current circumstances. What needs to be changed? 2. Take a personality test – There are many different personality assessments available, and most are amazingly accurate. 3. Take time to reflect – We need to reflect on the things that happen through our day, why we think what we do about those things, and how we react to them. Once you begin on the path to increasing your level of awareness, you’ll begin to see yourself and others with more clarity. You will view this new self-awareness of yourself as a gift that helps you connect with others on a deeper level and helps you determine what is right for you. Thank you for joining me today. When it comes to a cornucopia of color, the quaint vintage town of Tellico Plains, Tennessee wins the prize! Spectacular sunrises and sunsets will take one’s breath away. In late September through October the naturally beautiful scenery of the Cherokee National Forest, which wraps around the town, bursts with a brilliance of shades of red, orange and yellow. Tellico Plains has earned the title of a ‘vintage mountain town’, and historical and amazing mountain views and space add to its ambiance. It's known as one of the most diverse parks in Tennessee when it comes to wildlife. Tellico Plains may be small, but it boasts many a big adventure. Head to Tellico River or Bald River Falls, enjoy a leisurely drive across state lines on the Cherohala Skyway, wander through the Cherokee National Forest. Known for its close vicinity to multiple outdoor experiences, Tellico Plains is a popular place to camp, fish, kayak and just vacation. The city itself was incorporated in the summer of 1911 but has been known by quite a few different names. Once considered Talico, Teliquo and Great Tellico, the area was inhabited by Native Americans long before colonists began to move west. There are even remnants of tribal burial and ceremonial sites in the area. When settlers did begin a secondary human discovery of the area, it was mainly folks from Scotland and Ireland that made their home in the area. Industrial developments began in the 1820's and continued through the 20th century. Barry Thompson Around Our Vintage Mountain Town… a Natural Place to Live 14

Let’s Talk About Tanning Beds We all know that tanning beds can provide a quick and relaxing way to develop a golden tan. Why were tanning beds originally created and how did they become so popular? Are tanning beds safe, can they be dangerous to our health? What are some of the risks or benefits of tanning beds? Are there alternatives to tanning beds? Tanning beds were originally created in the late 19th century. Danish physician Niels Ryben Finsen was falling ill and as his health declined, he became interested in the medical benefits of sunlight. He discovered that sun rays could help patients with a variety of ailments, especially lupus and tuberculosis. Natural sunlight can be scarce in Scandinavia, where Finsen lived, so he developed the Finsen lamp, a carbon arc lamp that emitted ultraviolet rays. Finsen won the Nobel Prize for this creation, and it helped many people find relief from painful and debilitating conditions. Tanning beds became available in the U.S. during the 1970s. Initially, these devices were used medically and as they became more readily available the tanning craze began. Millions have used tanning beds since the late 1970s when they were commercialized. Tanning beds are linked to more than half a million skin cancer cases in the U.S. alone. Using a tanning bed before age 35 can raise the risk of developing Melanoma by 75%? According to SkinCancer.Org one study of 63 women diagnosed with melanoma 24

Page 25

before age 30 showed that 97 percent of them used tanning beds and one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Tanning beds are extremely harmful to our health and skin, they’re actually a known carcinogen, meaning that they can cause cancer. Tanning beds deliver very intense UV radiation which causes the skin to tan quickly, which is also what makes them desirable, and this intense UV radiation increases your risk of sun damage in those areas that it’s tanning. Avoiding tanning beds will help prevent skin cancer and slow down the signs of aging. What are some alternatives to tanning beds? Professional spray tans deliver great results without streaking, leaving a natural and healthy-looking glow. Spray tans are quick, effective and safe. The benefit is you just walk away immediately with nice golden skin, but sometimes they can be pricey. Another more affordable option is tanning lotion/liquid, it does require the proper application to avoid streaks and is a little more difficult to apply to every area of the body compared to spray tans that are applied by a professional to the entire body. There’s also lots of different self-tanning lotions and oils that do not damage the skin, but they just induce a temporary color. Whether you choose a self-tanner lotion or spray tan, you will be doing your body, health and your skin a great favor by avoiding the skin cancer trap known as the tanning bed. Exploring small business and web presence. By Christion Frye Are you wondering if a website can help your small business? For many small business owners, the question comes down to return on investment. Will a website really boost sales? Will it be worth the time, expense, and quite frankly hassle? All of these are questions that must be answered. So, let’s dig in together and see if there is a conclusion to be found. A cursory examination of the the internet will lead you to some quite startling statistics. Jack Flynn writes for “20+ Essential small business statistics” that 81% of consumers research a business online before making a purchase. If you imagine the competition in your line of small business, how much are you losing if you are not available to that 81%? Consider also the impact of the past few years on all businesses large and small. Since the worldwide pandemic a new model for business sprang to life with businesses like Amazon and Ebay, even Etsy having much more success than ever because of the simplicity of ordering from their website, and having the product delivered directly to the the consumers home. With this information in hand, it is important to note that starting a website is a big decision. Certainly anyone can go to a free website builder, get themselves a “free domain” and have a website in minutes. What do you get with that though? It is important to note that there are no “free domains” available on the internet. Some can be purchased with deals, but mostly when you go to a website that offers “a website in minutes” you end up with a subdomain. Subdomains are not real domains, instead they are a piece of someone else’s 32

Page 33

website. They offer some web identity, but someone still has to navigate to somebody else’s website to see yours. An example of a subdomain is as follows: http://subdomain.somebodiessite.com These free sites can be a good place to start, but if you want real internet presence you really should purchase your own domain name. This is one example of a common mistake that many first-time website owners make. This writer suggests discussing your website with a trained website consultant or at least someone with some experience in the field. Of course, that’s not all, it’s probably best to decide beforehand what kind of things you would like to do with your website. Maybe monthly coupons, maybe ads, maybe offer special deals. Perhaps you want a place for customers to leave reviews. Remember this is a huge opportunity to drive business to your brick and mortar location. Mr. Flynn has some more staggering statistics on his site. “85% of consumers use the internet to discover and find local businesses, with 44% of those consumers abandoning websites with no contact information. “It is not only important to have a website but it is extremely important to be responsive to that website. If a customer leaves a bad review. it is only the end of the world if you don’t respond and try to make the situation right. The internet is the new “word of mouth” there are websites like yelp and other things of its ilk which will likely have any horrible thing that could possibly be said about your business on it. Having your own website, where you have contact with your customers is important for your product image. With your own domain (as discussed above) and your own presence on the web you can combat bad press, you can offer deals, you can keep in touch with your customers. You can be easily found. The question shouldn’t be can you afford a website, the question should be can you afford to -not- have a website. REF: Flynn, J. RED, WHITE, BLUE ASIAN SLAW Make it easy on yourself by using a bag of pre-shredded cabbage/ coleslaw mix, some pre-sliced almonds, crushed ramen noodles and green onions. This is literally opening a bags and dumping it into a big bowl. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Things do not have to be time-consuming! But if you are a ‘glutton for punishment’ chop your favorite coleslaw ingredients, toss with asian dressing and top with almonds. Ingredients One bag of Asian coleslaw, pre-shredded. Add one package of your favorite flavored pre-cooked ramen noodles. Directions Pour in bowl mixing ingredients. Then toss with Honey Sesame Soy Dressing. INDULGE that SWEET TOOTH. It May Be HEALTHIER than You Think! Do gooey cinnamon bear claws make your heart skip a beat? Are cupcakes topped with chocolate chips your biggest vice or Rocky Road ice cream topped with rich whipped cream? Despite what you may think, your love and appreciation for yummy sweet treats can actually benefit your health. 42

Page 43

Why not have your cake and eat it too (literally) with these five excellent reasons to indulge today? Nutrient Rich Desserts Are Good for You. There’s a reason why your body craves certain delicious desserts - carbohydrates are an essential nutrient for the body. While desserts may not be the healthiest form of carbohydrates, the right indulgences can fuel your body and mind. Plus, many desserts such as pumpkin pie or dark chocolate contain rich sources of whole foods that provide necessary vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants to your diet. It’s True… Desserts Make You Happier! Have you ever taken a bite of your favorite dessert and felt instantly transported to a higher level of happiness? That feeling is real. Foods with a naturally high percentage of carbohydrates help the brain and body produce chemicals (such as serotonin) that contribute to overall emotional well-being, a sense of euphoria, general happiness. Indulging in your favorite dessert alters your mind and body in positive ways. Take full advantage of this scientific process by allowing yourself to enjoy your favorite sweet treat without that extra side of guilt. You really are doing something good for your body! You Can Improve Your Weight Control by Eating Dessert. Cravings for sweets are one of the biggest causes of diet failure. When you stop eating desserts all together, you may experience improvement in your short term weight goals, but studies show that adults who indulge in dessert yet eat an otherwise nutritious diet have a greater chance of producing long term success in weight loss. This is true because the body will respond to small amounts of desserts that satisfy cravings by satiating its own appetite for them. Choosing to stop consuming sweets altogether in the hopes of achieving a weight loss goal will almost always lead to binge eating and over consumption when you finally indulge. Balancing your indulgences with healthier eating and regular exercise is more likely to lead to diet success than completely eliminating them. Desserts Offer an Opportunity to Add More Fruit to Your Diet. 43

Page 44

Fruit is an essential part of your daily intake of nutrients that keep you healthy, strong, and immune to certain diseases. Unfortunately, you may not be getting the necessary dose of these powerful food options. Adding raspberries and blueberries to a bowl of frozen greek yogurt makes an already healthy dessert (rich in protein and healthy fats) into a positively vital meal for your daily fruit intake. Don’t be afraid to get creative; from chocolate-covered strawberries to vanilla and mango smoothies, the options are all scrumptious and endless. Negative Side Effects of Dieting are Remedied by Desserts. Ever wonder why when in the hospital they serve jello or chocolate pudding? When patients lose their appetite due to illness, it is easier and more enjoyable to consume sugary, low-nutrient carbohydrates than any other type of food. Suddenly decreasing your intake of carbs and sugar deprives your body of the necessary glucose needed for energy. Dieting can actually increase feelings of sluggishness, mental fog, and distraction. Just another reason to salvage those Oreos from the trash. To all the die-hard dessert fans out there, take heart-that cherry pie may just be the best food choice you’ve made all day. Although it is still important to focus on consuming a well-balanced diet filled with whole grains, vegetables, and protein, desserts add a little more excitement to your meals. And besides making you happier, desserts can also sometimes make you healthier. A SWEET TOOTH IS MEANT to be satisfied—yes, even if you're watching your weight. Dessert, after all, is one of life's pleasures, and deprivation typically backfires. The trick is making smart choices and substitutions. Here are 10 desserts that are as healthy as they are tasty!  Grilled fruit. Try throwing pineapple, banana, apple, or pear slices on the grill. There's nothing healthier than sticking with fresh fruit, and on the grill, it becomes even sweeter. Grilling concentrates flavor by reducing water content, while also caramelizing the fruit's natural sugars. One serving of grilled pineapple usually provides around 80 calories.  Dark chocolate "bark". Melt dark chocolate and spread it on parchment paper. Then sprinkle in healthy ingredients like tart cherries, cranberries or sunflower seeds. Refrigerate it for five minutes before breaking it into small pieces. It's a healthy option because dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate. And it 44

Page 45

contains more cocoa, which may make it heart-smart. One piece of ‘bark’ should come in at less than 100 calories.  Ricotta and berries. Blend 1 cup of mixed berries with ¼ cup of low-fat ricotta if craving ice cream; It's creamy, sweet, and low in calories. And a serving provides between 150 and 200 calories.  Healthy apple "pie. Bake an apple, cut in half, until soft. Top it with 2 tablespoons of low-fat Greek yogurt, a dash of cinnamon, and crumbs from one crushed graham cracker. Expect to spend about 150 calories.  Biscotti. If you can stick with one, it's a great low-calorie cookie and the smaller ones should only set you back about 70 calories. Liven things up with an exciting new flavor like almond-apricot or even honey pistachio.  Greek yogurt berry brûlée. Spread plain, nonfat Greek yogurt over fresh berries in a small serving bowl. Sprinkle on a teaspoon of sugar and use a culinary torch to burn the sugar for a minute or two, until it's golden. Not only is this treat tasty, but the yogurt is packed with protein, and there's lots of vitamin C and calcium, too. Calories: around 175.  Banana ‘ice cream’ with cinnamon and walnuts. Purée frozen banana chunks with a splash of almond milk, creating a treat with a creamy, ice cream-like texture. Sprinkle chopped walnuts and cinnamon on top. (Cinnamon is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help diabetics manage blood sugar levels.) This dessert is a perfect substitute for ice cream with less calories, no fat, no added sugar, and potassium and fiber from the banana. Calories should add up to around 200 to 230.  Chocolate chia and almond bites. Use a food processor to purée pitted dates and water until a sticky paste forms. Add in cocoa powder, almonds, and chia seeds to create a solid dough. Shape the mixture into tablespoon-balls, and then refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour. The dates make the dessert sweet, and the almonds and chia seeds provide healthy fats—along with texture and crunch. Calories: 160.  Mini ice-cream sandwiches. Put a small scoop of light vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt between two vanilla wafers. Roll the sandwich in finely chopped dark or bittersweet chocolate so that it sticks to the ice cream. Each sandwich should cost about 200 calories.  Dark chocolate-dipped fruit. Microwave a dark chocolate bar until it's almost melted, and then dip in the fruit of your choice—be it strawberries, mango, papaya, apricot, or banana. This is a nourishing and filling option since fruit is loaded with fiber and water. Antioxidants in cocoa are thought to boost the flexibility of blood vessels and lower blood pressure; since dark chocolate has a higher concentration of cocoa than milk chocolate, it contains more of these helpful compounds. Calories in a single chocolate-covered strawberry: around 80. 45
