1 BEING A HOST Hosting a game night can be extremely fun and when done well it leaves your guests feeling satisfied and looking forward to future game nights The main of objective of a successful game night is to make it memorable and fun This is accomplished by creating excitement hosting with enthusiasm and ending the night with an exclamation point Here are the steps needed to have a great night and set the stage for more fun nights in the future THE INVITATION Inviting someone to do something can be stressful and it often makes people feel self conscious However invitations that follow a few simple rules can be planned ahead of time which makes them much easier to use The goal of an invitation is to ensure the person knows that you value them and would like them to attend People are more likely to decline an invitation if they don t think their attendance will be valued or worse that they are obligated to attend One way of wording an invitation is to say what you would like Clear invitations require four things 1 Explain your event or plan so that your guests know what to expect I m having a party game night get together house warming I m hosting a party game night lunch dinner party I m thinking of hosting a game night Let s Formulate an Invitation and I ll be making soup and bread 2 Let them know what you would like and make sure that what you would like is for them to attend and I wanted to invite you and I was wondering if you would like to come join us and I d love it if you could come be there join me join us and I was hoping you could make it and I hope you can come be there join me join us and it would be great if you can make it 3 Specify a date time and location so your guests know what time you will expect them to arrive It is wise to send invitations one or two weeks before the event to allow your guests time to plan to attend Note If your guests show up late try to make them feel welcome Do not sulk for the rest of the evening or you may compound the problem Just continue laughing and ignore the fact they were late 6 Home Economics Consumer Science Cozy Soup Night

To some degree the rules for hosting depend on the guest and the situation If it s a very close friend or family member you can be a bit more relaxed If your family member brings a stranger to your home you may need to step up your host game The guidelines for receiving guests are as follows A Be Welcoming A host is a leader and guests will take their cue from your actions and behave accordingly Remember that they will likely not assume what is ok to do in your home so you have to tell them Never leave them hanging at the front door and don t expect them to follow you if you don t say anything Invite them inside tell them they are welcome point to where they can hang their coats or leave their shoes and invite them to sit down You can also point them to the washroom should they need it B Offer Them a Drink Ask your guests if they would like a drink and offer them at least two options whatever you think is most suitable for the event The options could range between coffee tea water pop or juice C Don t Leave Guests Unattended If you have planned your event correctly you should be done cleaning However if you still had a few last minute preparations for the meal make sure to talk to your guests while you do it Experienced and considerate guests may even offer to help D Stay Calm Don t rush Move casually otherwise you will let your guests think they have become a burden for you E Engage Your Guests in Conversation Talk about things that your guests want to talk about Ask questions about their work their day their families and their interests Don t complain about your own troubles or family issues Show interest in what your guest has to say Build on the conversation and let it flow F Offer an After Dinner Drink After you have finished dinner and are eating dessert offer your guest something to wash down the meal Sit and talk on the couch with a drink After dinner cofffee or tea is a popular choice F Saying Goodnight When it is time for your guests to go home make sure you thank them for coming Tell them that you enjoyed their visit and that you are looking forward to seeing them again If they enjoyed the meal consider giving a portion to them to take home Tell them you won t need it say that it s a pleasure to see someone enjoy your food Walk them to the door or to their car and make sure you wait there until they depart The Great Life Adventure 7

2 1 PREPARING YOUR HOME Don t give your guests any reason to think they re imposing or intruding on your life If you don t want people in certain rooms simply close the doors and leave the rest of the doors open Stock the guest bathroom with extra toilet paper soap and a hand towel in plain sight Always make sure that there is a clean room where people can put their coats and other things 1 Declutter First Always begin by tidying up the rooms that will see the most traffic during the party Start with the dining room and bathrooms then follow up in the kitchen and entryways as well Remove furniture personal items and any out of place stuff during your tour and at least tuck it away in a closet before getting on to the deep cleaning Always declutter first 2 Start at the Entry Since guests get a first impression when strolling in begin your cleaning with the walk to the door and your entryway Sweep the front steps vacuum any rugs in the foyer and give the front windows a quick clean if you have the time 3 Scrub the Bathrooms Once you have the entryway ready give your guest bathrooms a thorough cleaning Empty wastebaskets hang fresh hand towels and make the tubs and toilets presentable Don t forget about relocating any medications or other sensitive items away to your bedroom or master bathroom before the party begins 4 Ready the Guest Areas If you re having guests mingle in both the living room and dining area make them as neutral as possible by removing fragile items Vacuum the floors and consider removing rugs that might get spills of food and drink on them Make sure there are plenty of pathways between furnishings and consider relocating some items to make more floor space for the games night Make sure there is ample seating for everyone The Great Life Adventure 9

3 1 PERCEPTION A business has the right to exist when it meets a need or a want In other words for a business to survive it needs us to purchase their products Their concern it not whether you need it it is to convince you that you do need it They do this through marketing Most of us assume that most businesses follow a code of ethics when they market their products to us We expect the world of business to be honest trustworthy fair just accountable and loyal However this is not always the case Legally businesses are considered persons They can be held responsible for their decisions and actions but a business does not have a soul It doesn t actually care about you A business s main focus is its own existence When it promises to make us look cool make us more clever make us more healthy or make us more lovable it doesn t do it for our sake It does it in order to sell its products We are bombarded by advertisements on YouTube billboards on the side of the road pictures in magazines and commercials on the television and radio in order to convince us to act The desired action is to purchase their product Advertisements aim to convence us to buy their product by changing our peception It does this by using our senses smell sound taste and texture which can all play a big part in our feelings about a certain product Advertising lures consumers in by 1 Exposing us to their product 2 Getting our attention 3 Affecting our interpretation Sensation Perception The Psychology Behind Good Advertising Sight We mostly buy products because we like the way they look Businesses spend lots of money to make sure that we do and will adjust their packaging advertising and product design to meet those needs Some products might look cool sleek and modern like an iPhone Others like bedding might look soft comfortable warm and cozy Colours also influence our perception Blue has a tendency to make us feel relaxed and red makes us feel excited or hungry Therefore colour can plays a huge part in packaging design Marketing Color Psychology A Marketing Color Psychology B Smell Smells can stir our emotions and trigger our memories Researchers have discovered that consumers who smell a product at the same time as seeing it are are more likely to purchase it think popcorn How Scent Can Influence Your Purchasing Habits Sound Sounds can affect us Surprisingly many products claim a sound signature like a Harley Davidson motorcycle or the fizzing sound of opening of a bottle of Coca Cola or listening to the ice jingle in a glass The Psychology Behind Sounds in Marketing Harnessing the Power of Sound Taste People develop strong preferences for certain flavours which is why companies spend so much money on taste signatures for example KFC whose signature spice blend is a secret or Coca Cola s recipe that nobody knows The Truth Behind Brand s Secret Formulas Recipes 14 Home Economics Consumer Science Cozy Soup Night How KFC Was Made from a Gas Station Recipe

Touch Consumers often feel better about purchasing a product if they can hold it or touch it such as buying a vehicle Touch can play a vital role in marketing for example test buttons on toys or the ability to feel the softness of a blanket 3 2 ATTENTION While marketing uses our senses to expose us to products the goal is to get our attention Once they have that it is far more likely that we will purchase from them Our attention is a very valuable commodity Social media companies like Facebook knows this and that is why they use their platforms for marketing Attention is a limited resource There s just 24 hours per human per day and every advertiser wants it One of the challenges that marketing companies face is that people become numb to advertising As we are exposed to more and more advertisements we adapt to no longer pay attention to them because it becomes so familiar As a response marketing companies have to start using increasingly stronger doses of stimulus in order to get our attention Images might get more daring they might use flashing lights advertisements might get larger colours used might become more bold they might be placed in locations that would surprise us Any advertisers who are able to find a new novel or interesting way of presenting their product will outshine the exposure that we as consumers have adapted to and their prize is our attention The Attention Economy Is Our Attention for Sale James Williams Advertising has become increasingly persuasive and tailored in the age of big data Companies sell users attention and personal information to the highest bidder YouTube is especially bad for this YouTubers work very hard to keep your attention and once they have it they earn their money by sharing your attention to the highest bidder The advertisements you see while watching a YouTube video is effectively that company paying the YouTuber for their ability to keep your attention The brain is only able to process so much information so the battleground in marketing companies is who will get yours They might even use guerilla marketing tactics to get noticed which would invovle springing advertisements on people when they least expect it The Great Life Adventure 15

3 3 INTERPRETATION The purpose of manipulating our perception and attention is to affect our interpretation As consumers we assign meaning to the stimuli we are bombarded with everyday We might immediately dismiss some advertising as irrelevant while others might pique our interest When advertizing is utilized effectively our perception and attention change the meaning we ascribe to products For example not knowing anything about a shoe company we might look at their products and attribute the meaning of sport exercise or fitness to them However the brand would like to re educate us to make different associations with their products perhaps athletic trendy and empowering Before you made that association with their product you might have viewed all sport shoes the same Once that interpretation has been made though you will be more likely to purchase their brand if you also want to view yourself as athletic trendy and empowered Let s watch these videos and then discuss the questions that follow The 10 Ways Businesses Use Psychology to Trick You 15 Marketing Tricks Each Store Uses The Secret Behind CocaCola Marketing Strategy 16 Home Economics Consumer Science Cozy Soup Night

3 5 EYEBALL ECONOMICS How Many Ads Do We See A Day In 2021 Sam Carr February 15th 2021 In today s world everywhere you look you are constantly swamped by ads Buy this watch this subscribe now But just how many adverts do we see in a given day Is it in the hundreds Thousands Or more The answer is A LOT and the figures will have you questioning how the human brain can cope with the constant information overload To give you an accurate answer we re taking a look at the growth of advertising and the new tactics advertisers are using to expose you to as many ads as possible We ll also take a look at what consumers are doing to fight back against the constant barrage and if advertisers have gone too far with their methods To get things started let s answer that burning question everyone wants to know How many ads do we see in a day How Many Advertisements Are We Exposed to Daily Back in the 70s it was reported that the average person saw between 500 to 1600 ads per day Without online marketing being a thing back then most ads could be found on billboards in newspapers and on TV promoting the latest products Even with their limited resources and increased government regulation marketing firms were always working on ingenious ways to target consumers with new strategies such as positioning In a mediaoriented culture advertisers found it necessary to position a product in the consumer s mind both within the context of its own benefits and strengths in relation to its competitors This lead to the birth of product placement one of the most time tested marketing strategies that is still used today A few decades later and advertising had exploded into everyday life In 2007 the market research firm Yankelovich estimated that the average person saw up to 5 000 ads per day and after surveying 4 110 people half of them said that advertising was out of control Fast forward to 2021 and although there are no official figures the average person is now estimated to encounter between 6 000 to 10 000 ads every single day With the figures nearly double that of 2007 how exactly did we get here And how did the figure increase so much If you haven t guessed already you can thank the internet and new technologies for the huge increase As soon as new technology becomes available advertisers are always looking at how it can be monetized and help share their advertising messages In the last 20 years online and digital marketing has grown exponentially and has created a long list of companies that make most of their profits from digital advertising And with digital advertising showing no signs of slowing down this list is only likely to increase along with the number of ads The Rise Of Online Advertising The exponential growth of online advertising can be traced back to the year 2000 when Google launched its AdWords advertising service Since then digital marketing has seen and huge increase and Google has managed to grow its advertising revenue every year for the past 19 years and made over 134 billion in 2019 alone just from advertising But it s not just Google who have been cashing in on the growth of digital advertising In 2007 Facebook launched its own advertising services which allows advertisers to target users and audiences based on a range of demographics and information Shortly after launching Facebook s ad revenue started to increase exponentially every year and recently hit over 69 billion in advertising revenue in 2019 20 Home Economics Consumer Science Cozy Soup Night

Originally Google only displayed two or three ads at the top but over the years this has slowly increased with the most recent change making it four This means for every search a user makes they re likely to encounter four sponsored ads And with the average user making several Google searches a day this can quickly add up Digital Banner Ads From these two examples it s clear that digital advertising has had a huge impact on many people s lives and advertisers are using countless new technologies to target users Here are several more marketing strategies companies are using to get their advertising messages in front of their audience Believe it or not many brands have also approached game developers to ensure their brands are included in certain video games Very popular with digital marketers these ads appear on various search engines Advertisers only pay for these adverts when they receive a click In app Banners With the rise of mobile apps many of them now have advertisements that support the free use of the service Video Ads The largest video sharing platform YouTube is owned by Google and is part of their ad network which shows video ads to users watching videos Streaming Ads Twitch tv and other streaming platforms have seen enormous growth in recent years and rely on video ads and branding deals as a form of revenue Social Media Ads Instagram Twitter Facebook Reddit and LinkedIn are all cashing in social media marketing with their pay per click advertising model Email GDPR regulation might have hit email marketing hard but with just an email address advertisers can send sequences and funnels to potential customers for months to come Where digital advertising all began With remarketing and display ads from Google banner ads can be found on almost every website In game Ads Product Placement Found in many TV shows such as Stranger Things some characters will promote products as it s a great way to reach their target audience AdBlock to the Rescue With the average person seeing up to 10 000 advertisements every single day it was only a matter of time before users started to fight back Visit any large website and you ll quickly be greeted with a whole range of banners and video ads Everyone s witnessed the annoying auto playing ads at some point in their lives and know just how intrusive and sometimes scary they can be Since the majority of ads today are found online via websites social media apps and video content a small group of people decided to fight back against the constant barrage Appropriately named AdBlock these various plugins have been a godsend for users who are constantly swamped with intrusive ads With just a few clicks all these annoying ads will instantly disappear and make online browsing a much more pleasant experience The first and most popular ad blocker to hit the scene was AdBlock plus back in 2005 Originally released as a Firefox extension it quickly spread to other web browsers including Chrome Edge and Opera On paper the idea of an ad blocker sounds great at least for users By analyzing common patterns and the code of scripts the plugin can detect when something is an ad and block it from displaying on the user s screen Of course it doesn t always work as intended The Great Life Adventure 21

Page 22

Since its inception there have been many problems with adblockers alike including false positives missing certain ads and even big websites trying to get around them One of the best examples is when Facebook changed its entire site to specifically stop adblockers from blocking their ads And that s not the only problem with adblockers Over the years certain adblockers such as Adblock Plus have been taking payments from large advertisers to whitelist their ads This means anyone who has the plugin installed will be able to see their ads defeating the purpose of installing it in the first place This controversial move made many users angry and saw lots of new variations of adblockers released overnight While the idea of an adblocker sounds great in this day and age with the constant false positives whitelisting of ads and websites avoiding them adblockers actually aren t as effective as you d imagine But with the number of ads we see per day increasing at an alarming rate what s likely to happen in the future However with most of the new technologies being digital the introduction of plugins and software like adblockers will start to greatly decrease the number of ads we see The first adblocker originally started out on desktop computers but with the advancement of smartphones it wasn t long before a mobile version was made And with technology getting better every year how long is it until it s possible to block other forms of advertising A recent kickstart project showcased the idea of glasses that block all screens and in an article by Vice they explored the concept of using them to block ads in the real world Could this be the future of adblocking and reducing how many ads we see per day Possibly but only time will tell how effective and useful they are But with a combination of digital and real life adblockers this could be the solution to the growing number of ads per day How Many Ads Will We See in the Future So what s the future for marketing and how many ads are we likely to see a day in the future The traditional marketing methods don t seem to be going anywhere and with the introduction of new company branding strategies and technology we can only expect the number of ads to increase In recent years there has been a huge increase in social media platforms and apps such as Snapchat and Pinterest Both platforms are relatively new and yet both have already built a huge user base With new platforms also comes an increase in the number of ads Known as social media marketing many big brands are continually expanding their marketing efforts to ensure they get the most exposure on every platform This means that whenever a new social platform is created expect to see plenty of ads as brands take advantage of the marketing opportunity With new platforms being created every year expect to see more social media advertising in the future 22 Home Economics Consumer Science Cozy Soup Night Wreck it Ralph Ralph Breaks the Internet gives a great visual representation of online marketing and clickbait 2018
