P roud to be a BALER Baler Fans Welcome to the 2017 Baler Football season This will be a bittersweet HOME season for the Balers as we play our last home football games in the current Andy Hardin Stadium on our natural grass turf surrounded by our trademark white fence We lost our home pressbox and grandstands in last February s storm so it is perfect timing that our Board of Trustees has approved the construction of a NEW Andy Hardin Stadium to include synthetic track and eld surfaces new locker facilities and home and visitor grandstands We are optimistic of a 2019 Home season in our new stadium Coach Smith returns for his second season as Baler Football Head Coach 2017 brings many challenges for Coach Smith who leads a young roster and a revamped varsity staff As usual the Balers will have one of the toughest schedules in the CCS with 8 of the 10 opponents having made the CCS playoffs last year The Monterey Bay League MBL is in its last year as the Balers will join the Paci c Coast Athletic League PCAL in 2018 The MBL Gabilan became a lot stronger with the addition of Seaside and Aptos High Schools for its last year in existence The goal remains the same improve our play every week and be MBL Gabilan League Champions Nashelle Tombe is our new Head Cheer Coach and Joey Fortino returns for his second year as Director of the Scarlet Regiment Band The support of Cheer and the Scarlet Regiment Band along with our award winning Baler Barn concessions make Friday Nights at Andy Hardin very special and we all should be thankful There aren t too many communities left in California where everybody supports the home town team the HAYBALERS the mighty HAYBALERS Thank you for coming out and supporting our students players and coaches who work so hard to make you and our entire community proud to be BALERS GO BALERS Tod Thatcher Athletic Director 5

Coach Hardin Speaking at 1962 Dedication Ceremony Coach Hardin s 1946 Football Team ANDY HARDIN FIELD 1962 2017 The 2017 football season at San Benito High School will be the last year the Hollister Balers football team will play on the Andy Hardin Field Construction of a new sports complex will soon begin on the existing football field and parking area It was during half time on September 21 1962 that the newly completed football field was dedicated as the Andy Hardin Field commemorating the beloved teacher and coach who had spent 38 years at San Benito High School 1923 1961 Andy Hardin Field has supported high school student s physical education rallies athletic competitions and graduation ceremonies We have enjoyed seeing Balers play here over the years in football soccer lacrosse field hockey track and field events band and cheer Andy Hardin Field is home to championship high school football The Balers have won three CCS Division 2 South Championships 1984 1985 and 1986 and four CCS Championships 2000 2005 2012 and 2014 SAN BENITO HIGH SCHOOL HOLLISTER 28 2 0 17 1 8 BA L E R F O O T BA L L C H E E R

55 YEARS OF MEMORIES Andy Hardin Field has been the site for countless community events and activities over the last 55 years Great memories have been made here as young boys played Vikings football on Saturdays and then grew up to play as Balers under the Friday night lights Hundreds of miles have been walked and millions of dollars raised during the Relay for Life events all for the sake of winning the battle against cancer Invitational track and field meets have been hosted here where athletes have set personal bests and event records Construction of the new sporting complex will begin soon and will include football track and field and swimming venues It is hoped these facilities will be ready for the 2019 Fall sports season when memories will continue to be made The new football area will be called the Andy Hardin Stadium SAN BENITO HIGH SCHOOL HOLLISTER 29 2 0 17 1 8 BA L E R F O O T BA L L C H E E R

The Haybaler Offense will continue in the philosophy of punishing the defense at the point of attack Being a physical team up front will be our preaching point all year long Returning to Coach this great group of young men is long time Head Coach Chris Cameron His expertise and knowledge unmatched by any coach on staff will be needed in developing this young group Juniors Blaze McShane Aidan Pung Diego Ramirez Nate Sanchez Joey Saldana and Jesus Toscano look to play important roles immediately Returning Seniors Daniel Pasillas and Chris Maes will pave the way With the loss of a great running back in Hunter Nye comes a committee of dedicated role players Senior HB Jonny Gonzalez has been a standout in Summer and Fall practices A three year starter Gonzalez is ready to take a majority of the carries Senior FB Matt Roman played hard nose minutes at the end of last year Senior Joe DiMaggio coming over from the defensive side of the ball had improved steadily and looks to add a 3rd dimension at HB Juniors Ernie Cruz Stevan Navarro and Sophomore Eric Greene look to play consistent roles Senior TE Giovanni Gionnatto s knowledge of our blocking schemes and athleticism give him the tools to be the best Tight End in the league His work ethic is like no other on the team Senior Adam Mendoza playmaker all over the field and Seniors Mathew Trimble and transfer Elisha Reyes will be added support at the wide receiver position Leading all these young men to battle will be Junior Slade Wilson at Quarterback Slade s dedication to becoming stronger in the off season has paid dividends His enthusiasm and energy is contagious and this is just what the 2017 Baler offense needs Head Coach and Baler Alum Bryan Smith will coach Quarterbacks Wide Receivers and call plays on Friday night Running backs Coach Larry Murphy is returning to the staff after a year off His energy and knowledge of the game brings excitement to the offense Hard working Coach Joe Marinello is our TE coach and brings a wealth of experience to our staff The Baler Offense is looking forward to a great year GO BALERS 36

BALER DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW First off thank you to all who have put time money and effort into the 2017 Baler Football season This coming football season the defensive side of the football has major shoes to fill as we lose 7 players that either started or played significantly This year s Baler defense has been working extremely hard this off season making strides every day The 2017 football season will test the Baler Defense each week The defensive coaching staff which adds coaching great Tod Thatcher to the staff has its work cut out for them as we return 4 starters from last year s defense Our defensive front has the biggest shoes to fill as we lost 4 of 4 starters due to graduation That unit was led by Golden Helmet winner Michael Camacho who is now serving our country in the Army The defensive line looks to be anchored by Defensive Tackles Eugene McBride and Ivan Benitez Benitez being arguably the strongest on the team At our Inside Linebacker position we look forward to seeing Ethan King Owen Branon and Albert Rodriguez to make plays all over the field Our Outside Linebackers return 2 playmakers to anchor the perimeter as Anthony Delgado returns for his junior campaign and Eric Fernandez moves from Inside Linebacker to Outside Linebacker for his senior campaign Look for big plays out of those two Our Defensive Backfield loses 3 of 3 starters however this group has had a tremendous spring summer and has depth Look to the Mendoza brothers Adam and Robert to make the plays in the Defensive backfield Having multiple strong summer workouts young men like Marc Martinez Matt Manley and Kristian Espinosa will be making some plays as well We have the making of a very exciting defense and look forward to seeing them grow as a group Thank you for your continued support of the Baler Football Program and we will see you at our football games E S N ED FE Thanks Coach Lango and Defensive Staff 37

2016 GOLDEN HELMET AWARD MICHAEL CAMACHO The Golden Helmet Award is given annually to a varsity football player who exemplifies Haybaler Football on and off the field of play Some call it an MVP award however each recipient is not only an outstanding football player each young man has sacrificed year round to be the best football player and person they can be Additionally the player receiving this prestigious award has the tools to be a successful citizen in our community The first Golden Helmet was awarded in 1955 and there have been 48 winners including today The award was not presented from 1970 79 Only one player Ken O Connel has won the award twice in 1983 84 Two sets of brothers have won it as well as a great uncle and nephew MICHAEL CAMACHO DE Michael being named the League s Defensive MVP demonstrates his hard work ethic and his drive to never quit on and off of the field A captain on the team Michael didn t guide his teammates through words he showed his teammates how to work get better and never give up Whether it was on our Offenses backfield during scout team or our opponent s backfield in the game Michael continually anticipated what the offenses were doing As a two year Varsity starter Michael played and started in 24 games During those 24 games Michael compiled 184 tackles 17 5 sacks 5 blocked kicks 1 interception as well as scoring one touchdown His sack total pushed him to the top of the list which was originally held by DL J J Melo for one full season Michael s tackle total is good for 15th on the list and is also the highest for a Defensive Lineman in 24 games Michael s finest games were played during our Palma weeks in which he accumulated 22 tackles and 2 5 sacks between the 2015 16 games Michael is hands down the epitome of a Haybaler The Balers will truly miss Michael Camacho The Golden Helmet Award Winner for The 2016 Football Season is Michael Camacho 63
