HE Come Ye Come ye Thankful People come Henry Alford was a clergyman in the Church of England He was a scholar who labored 18 years on a 4 volume commentary But probably his most famous work is the song that is the title of this article Many of us have sung it and been blessed by its lyrics and melody The first verse of this Thanksgiving hymn is just that Thanksgiving At this time of year the sugar beets are rolled out of the ground into huge heaps the soybeans are being combined and corn is being cut and harvested That is just the tip of this vast cornucopia across the fruited plains How can we thank God for his bountiful supply to us over these many years Thankful people let us raise our hands and our voices and let the Lord of Harvest know that we appreciate the loaves and fishes that he has lavished upon us throughout the years Raise the song of harvest home We are eating well and most of us have pantries who shelves are laden with blessings All is safely gathered in Ere the winter storm begin God our Maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied The two middle verses of Alford s song depict Jesus parable in Matthew 13 24 30 Later in verses 36 43 Jesus explains the parable Jesus said The field is the world Henry Alford said All the world is God s own field fruit unto his praise to yield Wheat and tares together sown Unto joy or sorrow grown The Lord of Harvest is allowing yea even pressing the ICHA into the harvest Here in the States in Mexico Guatemala Honduras Haiti Jamaica London Russia Lesotho and South Africa our prayers dollars and boots are plowing planting and reaping Fruit unto His praise to yield Thank God for the awesome responsibility to be laboring in many countries for the harvest The father of Methodism John Wesley said I look upon all the world as my parish Verse three of Come Ye Thankful People Come continues the thought from Matthew 13 and the tares and wheat The tares are going to be gathered out from among the wheat and then cast into the fire That is what drives us Paul said Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord we persuade men The gathering of the good fruit and the bad fruit is coming Just like the Lord of Harvest knows the wheat he also knows the tares 2 November December Give his angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast Alford waxes eloquent and his words glow with passion as he pens that fourth verse Even so Lord quickly come to thy final harvest home Gather thou thy people in free from sorrow free from sin There forever purified in thy presence to abide Come with all thine angels come Raise the glorious harvest home Hallelujah Maranatha The chill of End Time events is in the air It s harvest time The frost of persecution and the darkness and delusion of the culture echo the same It s harvest time Someday soon a mighty angel will sound a trumpet that will be heard by all of God s people in or out of the grave Like an alarm clock awaking slumbering people to a new day so the trumpet will awaken the dead in Christ and alert those who are alive There will also come a mighty shout heard only by spiritually awakened souls What is that shout It might be the voice of a great archangel shouting All Hail King Jesus What rapture as we behold our Savior and King coming in the clouds with all of his glory All the world is God s own field Fruit unto his praise to yeild When that trumpet sounds and the Church rises to meet the Lord in the air we might look around us with our new immortal eyes and perception and see some of the Redeemed from areas of the harvest field where we have been plowing planting and reaping Over there is a young girl who attended a mountain church in Honduras close by is an elderly saint from South Africa There is a Haitian pastor that we helped to support What joy there will be to think that the Lord allowed us to be involved in his great harvest Even so Lord quickly come to Thy final harvest home
Thankful People Come HE Thanksgiving anyhow As I sit down to begin to write this article I asked myself this question how do you put Thanksgiving Christmas and New Year s together The more I thought about it I realized that you can t separate one from the other The words Thanks and Giving are separate words that automatically link Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day And then the word New connects Christmas Day and New Year s day Most likely by time you receive this article Thanksgiving Day will already be over But the lifestyle of the Christian ought to always be one of Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Day should simply get us in the mood and in the spirit to be thankful throughout the entire year We must keep in mind that the Psalms were the Jewish hymn book And they re full of admonitions of Thanksgiving and praise to our Creator and our Savior In Psalms 118 1 David writes O give thanks unto the Lord for he is good because his mercy endures forever O give thanks O is an exclamation There is a note of exuberance here The Lord is good and his mercy does exist forever In the same chapter verse 14 We read these words The Lord is my salvation and song and is become my salvation And the beginning of Verse 15 reads the voice of rejoicing in salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous Let s notice the phrase the Lord is Is is in the present tense That means he was yesterday is today will be tomorrow next week next month next year and will always be in the present tense He is my strength he is my song and he is my salvation We should give thanks unto the Lord this Thanksgiving Christmas and New Year season for him being our strength The scripture reminds us the joy of the Lord is our strength Humanity has a tendency to believe that our happiness is dependent upon our circumstances In fact many times during this holiday season we experience stress and frustration not realizing that it may be the result of us being wrapped up with the Busyness of the season And it s in those times we can call upon him in our distress and he will answer us and set us in a large place Hallelujah Remember this year the Lord is on our side Not only should we give praise unto the Lord for he is our strength But let s give thanks unto the Lord for he is our song The Lord give us songs in the night he gives a song to sing in the midst of our battles and songs after the battles It helps us to have the right focus in the midst of trying times The song Let s Talk About Jesus the king of kings is he the Lord of Lords supreme through all eternity is a blessing to all that sing it from their heart Remember Paul and Silas sang the Lord s song and he visited them in the Philippian jail Let s never forget the Lord s song is about victory and the songwriter expresses it this way it s not the battle that we praise but the victory is not the fight with Satan that I m singing of but it s the power of our God to win the conflict and I can shout oh Hallelujah triumph has come Finally I want to say we need to give thanks to the Lord because he is our salvation One day mercy was extended to me What a gift of salvation that God has given to humanity Psalms 118 5 I called upon the Lord in distress the Lord answered me and set me in a large place He also said they had thrust sore at me that I might fall but the Lord helped me Oh give thanks unto the Lord for he is good because his mercy endures forever Oh give thanks It s wonderful to have the gift of salvation and know every sin has been forgiven and know that the blessed Holy Spirit of God has cleansed from all sin A few years ago when Tanner was a small child he said to me one day Papaw I found a Christian song we can sing I replied to him what is it And his reply was We wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year I laughed but then was reminded that God wants all of his people to pronounce blessings on others and give Him praise for His Strength Song and Salvation In His Service November December 3
HE Come Ye Proper Stewardship Phill Hard This Fall at World Changers Week 2021 on the campus of Union Bible College we explored and expounded upon a relatively new leadership concept in some evangelical circles the Steward Leader or the steward leadership model Dr Brian Simmons one of the presenters at the convention and a champion of this model gave this working definition or statement Steward leadership is a model that views the primary identity and role of the leader as one who is a steward managing the resources of another that are entrusted into his or her care He also said All stewards are servants but not all servants are stewards The difference is the attitude motivation of the heart Wow When we take a look at this definition or these statements we soon realize that as stewards of the resources talents abilities tasks and time entrusted into our care from the Father we are all called to be Steward Leaders Now there is a lot of truth in those statements and quite frankly too much to unpack in one short article However I would like to take a quick look at this concept or idea through the small lens of financial stewardship We as Christians as followers of Christ as Steward Leaders have a responsibility to be proper stewards of the resources and financial blessings which God has placed in our care or trust Yes it is a great responsibility and perhaps a daunting task but with the leadership and filling of the Holy Spirit I believe it is an area in which we can excel as true followers of Christ While the steward leadership model is a new concept in theory it is not a new concept or idea in practice as I have seen leaders pastors and churches in the ICHA The subscription price on this publication is 8 per year Send all payments to Rev Phil Hoard Gen Treasurer 4485 North Fortville Pike Greenfield IN 46140 Send all articles news items and address changes to Rev Keith Ledford 710 Fairview Rd Galax VA 24333 Office manager Linda Ledford Photography Jonelle Hill Backyard Studios Rachel Meek Electronic submission of all materials is preferred Submit to mckledford gmail com 4 November December family and throughout the Holiness Movement live out proper stewardship with the financial resources which God has placed in their trust For example throughout the turmoil and uncertainty we have endured the past couple of years I have watched our people and our churches sacrificially give for special CFC projects for our missionaries and mission works around the world and for our three camps held during the summer months Your giving and financial s tewardship have truly been inspiring and encouraging to the General Board and the entire ICHA family As our founder Rev Buddy Perry an example of steward leadership in so many areas of his life would say And the Lord will bless you for it Yes He has and will continue to bless you for your faithful giving and for your faithful stewardship of HIS resources Yes I want to remind us of our responsibility in stewardship particularly stewardship with the financial resources that God has entrusted to our care Also I want to encourage our ICHA family to continue to give toward God s work being accomplished through ICHA Ministries here in America and around the world as there are many needs right now at home and abroad Please don t forget about the ICHA in the cold winter months that are coming You are truly making a difference and yes you can continue to make a difference through your financial stewardship as we all strive to be true Steward Leaders

HE Come Ye James Ward Long time elder of the ICHA former General Board member Chairman of the Ministerial Studies Committee and Editor of the Holiness Evangelist By son David Ward When Brother Ledford asked me to write about my father Rev James Ward my mind began to flashback to many memories Some I know from personal experience some from their frequent retelling My Dad was more than a pastor and teacher I remember him working in Quality Control for a manufacturer of metal tubes for nuclear reactors He worked for a contractor who was building what was then the tallest power plant smokestack in all of North American He operated a furniture refinishing business He was an avid hunter and fisherman Although as he often put it He was a better hunter than a finder While fishing on the Cumberland River as a boy he told of a catfish pulling his small boat upstream As a teen he skipped school to attend a Pitt game and thought he had gotten away with it until returning home to find his face among the celebrating fans pictured on the front page of the newspaper Rather than continuing with interesting little known details I would like to focus on the characteristics that defined who my Father was at his core Slow In this instance his behavior modeled that of an Old Testament shepherd who moved his flocks at the speed of the youngest and weakest members of his flock It wasn t that he couldn t go faster but rather that he wouldn t go faster As a student in his classroom it would irk me that he wouldn t move more quickly through the material However his first concern was not so much the amount of material covered but rather that each student was able to comprehend the concepts being presented To this day we still have his former students remarking I remember something your dad said in one of his classes 6 November December Thorough Dad could never just sit down and read a book in one setting Along with his reading he would be found with his ever present note cards and a pen There was a particular author I enjoyed reading as a teenager I was surprised to discover Dad reading one of his fictional titles because it was so outside the realm of his typical reading material It turns out he was reading it because of a Creative Writing Class he was soon to be teaching What I would typically read in less than two hours took him two weeks But when he finished he could tell you every detail of the story especially where the plot broke down I was never able to enjoy that author s writings again as I had before Clear The result of his careful study was an ability to present Scriptural truth clearly I never struggled with the doctrine of Holiness largely because I heard Dad present it clearly and concisely Of the many thousands of books in his library none was valued more or studied more thoroughly than his Bible He was not a speaker known for his charisma or dynamics but his faithful presentation of truth helped many parishioners and students develop deeper and more solid spiritual lives Grounded The period which best defines who he was at his core was during the disintegration of the Church of the Bible Covenant It was a time of rapid and radical change among our circles Many chose a side and followed a leader Others cast off unwanted restraints to do as they pleased My Dad simply continued to be the person he already was rooted and grounded In a word Dad was and is grounded in Christ That quiet steady influence impacted myself and many other students who were struggling with disillusionment in the swirling changes
Thankful People Come Dad was not always grounded As the product of a divided home he still bears the scars of his father walking away from their little family when Dad was a boy During his high school years a group of friends invited him to go with them to a revival meeting at Lincoln Place Church of the Nazarene in Pittsburgh Out of that encounter Dad came to know Christ and found the foundation which would anchor the rest of his life Feeling called to preach Dad attended God s Bible School where he met the love of his life Mom came out of an alcoholic home from a little coal mining village in the foothills of the Allegheny mountains She tells of watching Dad repeatedly walk past her work station in the Revivalist book bindery knowing all the while that he wanted to ask her out but was too shy They have amusing stories to tell of their dating experiences on the Hilltop but I ll leave those for them to tell Mom became the second anchor in Dad s life and together they built a solid home All four of we siblings are serving others today largely because of their influence and their faith My sister Beverly is an RN Jim is a contractor and key layperson John and myself are both serving in ministry positions Dad originally pastored an Allegheny church before returning to college for more education He pastored the Bible Covenant church in Josephine PA while also teaching at the Christian Day School at Dixonville His last pastorate in Pennsylvania was an independent church at West Lebanon where he also served as President of Armstrong County Holiness Camp While most know of Dad s nearly two decades of ministry to the Clarksburg church he also taught at Covenant Foundation College then God s Bible School and finally Union Bible College during those same years Because of their many years of HE ministry Dad and Mom have many other children Whether from the influence behind the pulpit from the lecture or the open door of the home and happy fellowship because of their foundation in Christ they have helped their children churches and communities find something solid on which to build their homes and lives Dad has never been known for his flash or charisma rather his solid steady and enduring influence But that s ok because his goal was never to make a name for himself but rather to point people to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith Alone These days Dad is mostly confined to the walls of his home Still he is blessed more than some because Mom continually walks by his side and many of Jimmy s family live nearby His faith remains strong In recent days I have made the journey from my home in Michigan to seek his counsel and have him pray with me These days I am very aware that he is one of my anchors and mentors I will not have forever However he does have bouts of loneliness and frustration In those lonely moments it s easy to feel forgotten and ineffective I encourage you if you have impacted by Dad s ministry or someone like him in your life reach out and communicate what they have and do mean to you and your walk with Christ Men like my father have blazed a trail for us to follow They would echo the words of the Apostle John when he said I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth Please let them hear from you as you walk in truth Then it is time for some of us who have had the privilege of awesome teaching and examples to not only follow the same path but to faithfully communicate the same Scriptural truth November December 7
HE Come Ye Unwanted Gifts Unanswered Prayers Rule was any book in my father s study was fair game Any of us six kids could go in at any time and choose any book off of any shelf and read it I don t remember when I joined the ranks of older siblings as a patron of my father s library I don t remember the time when my ritual of slowly walking around his room began carefully reading authors and titles slowly selecting the books feeling them in my hand reading the blurbs perusing the stories inside them bringing them home to my room in stacks and devouring them Granted I wasn t a wide reader My tastes were confined to specific authors or genres Reading level was never discussed thankfully the methods they drill in me at grad school to help me ascertain appropriately grade leveled reading material for my students were unknown to my parents If I wanted to read it I was allowed I brought home some C S Lewis and started building my own Lewis library in my early teens I read every A W Tozer book I could find on my father s shelves and finding books in his library is an interesting feat his methods of organization still cause me to scratch my head I read Zacharias and Brand and Bonhoeffer and Bounds and Chesterton And more often than I should like to think my father s books found their way to the bookshelves of my own bedroom and took up permanent residence there adopting me as their new mother There came this day very shortly before my 12th birthday or maybe it was my 11th when my dad said I could go in his study I m assuming I was looking for a book because that s really all there was to find in the room unless one likes to collect keys that unlock nothing in particular or stare at an assortment of temperature gauging instruments or listen to music on high quality 8 November December speakers My father is a man of few but passionate interests So there I was in his room on a Saturday night I flipped on the light that dark November evening To my disbelief to my ever lasting delight there was a surprise to behold in his always predictable study In addition to the wall to wall bookshelves desk couch recliner coffee table filing cabinets we shall not mention the state of the files in those cabinets there in the middle of the floor obviously not intended to stay there long term was a brightly colored hamster cage complete with said rodent inhabiting its premises A hamster On the floor In my dad s study Right before my birthday And all I d asked for was a hamster for my birthday This could only mean one thing A ran out into the sanctuary up to the right side of the pulpit where my father stood in front of the altars on that Saturday night prayer meeting I stood on my tiptoes to reach his ear What is that hamster doing in your study My everhonest always genuine nothing to hide father He could have said Oh you know Tom is on vacation and needed us to watch it for him But no not my father Deceit wasn t a word in his vocabulary Head back hand over his closed eyes he exclaimed Oh I blew it
2021 This could only mean one thing The intruding hamster taking up residence in my father s library was supposed to have been my surprise gift for my 12th birthday The untamed feral hamster The hamster with the long teeth The hamster Tom wanted to get rid of The hamster that couldn t be held because it would bite you That was my birthday gift I was elated I m not intimidated by difficult projects A houseful of kids would be a sure antidote to the hamster s guarded tendencies I brought Charles II home and tried to domesticate him Being domesticated wasn t something Charles II wanted to be I m guessing there s a book somewhere on my father s disorganized shelves with these words All get what they want they do not always like it Lewis p 205 1 My father gave me what I wanted for my birthday But regardless of our repeated attempts at making Charles II a member of the Barnard family Charles II didn t want to lay down his habit of using his long teeth to test the strength of anything that came within reach of his incisors And oh the gifts that I have begged and implored and prayed and petitioned and pled for from a Father Who is all seeing and all knowing How many times have I banged on the door and rattled the handle and made my requests known And on the other side of that imposing door silence Silence How many times must I beg and implore and plead and petition before Someone on the other side of that door arises and opens the door and grants the requests that a heart has been screaming for for so long How many prayers have to be prayed before the Father knows that Thankful People Come HE we are serious about our requests How much fasting must be done before the Righteous Judge says enough is enough And it came to me just this week that maybe my praying and fasting is not so much about the answers to prayer as much as it is about my praying changing me Maybe He wants these unanswered prayers to change me I remember praying this prayer almost a decade ago taken from the hymn Spirit of God Descend Upon My Heart Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer 2 I underlined those words in the song and placed them at the front of my Bible God saw that sincere prayer of a 17 year old girl and has been answering it ever since I first made the prayer my own I m sure there have been times in my spiritual journey when my prayers resembled my 12th birthday request as I received the undomesticated rodent Had my heavenly Father answered my petitions how I wanted how I contrived and imagined to be the best method to receive the answer I would not have liked the gift Just like I eventually didn t like my 12th birthday gift and tried pawning Charles II off on anyone who might want a biting hamster finally having to ask Tom to take the unwanted gift back So I submit myself to this painful praying this slow process of waiting and hoping in silence of laying my heart open and letting my Father take His time in providing what He sees as best For most of us the prayer in Gethsemane is the only model Removing mountains can wait 3 So with Christ I pray Nevertheless not my will but thine be done Luke 22 42 November December 9
HE Come Ye Let the Thankful Come For several weeks the country roads of Central Indiana have overflowed with surplus traffic Predominantly green or red in color massive vehicles have traversed the narrow ribbons of asphalt usually sparsely travelled Drivers have frequently been forced to squeeze onto the thin strips of grass separating the pavement and ditches to allow the monstrous beasts seemingly chased by implements of gargantuan proportions to thunder past Combines trailers semi trucks and various other machinery has invaded the usually quiet rural communities Harvest has come This process commenced months earlier as farmers cultivated the soil carved the earth into neat rows and carefully augmented the composition of the loam with fertilizers and other needed compounds The seed was carefully folded into the dirt and the waiting began Spring rains summer heat and the mysterious design of an Intelligent Creator worked their magic Sprouts appeared seemingly overnight Then stalks and vines began to stretch toward the sky The first fruits burst forth and the crops slowly matured The lazy days of summer have crawled past The hours of sunshine are significantly lessening and the temperature is exploring territory unseen since early spring As mother nature shrugs on her robe of yellow orange and red the growing season reaches its conclusion with a profusion of vegetables grains and fruit ripe and ready for picking With diligence and care those responsible have been gathering the produce and preparing it for processing sale or storage The coming winter months will provide no freshly grown delectables but thankfully the harvest has been plentiful and much food has been laid aside to sustain life through the cold dark days ahead No wonder then the desire to assemble with loved ones to unite in expressions of gratitude and thanksgiving for the goodness of God and the blessings that have been received People have across the millennia of history celebrated the ingathering of sustenance provided by the harvest More recently this milestone has been recognized with a national holiday 10 November December Soon masses of people will throng the airport terminals and crowd onto overloaded highways all intent on finding a seat at the family table when the Thanksgiving feast is shared Overfed individuals will overfill their stomachs with the rich delicacies of the season as too big turkeys mountains of mashed potatoes gallons of green beans and heaps of hot rolls are piled onto plates not quite large enough to accommodate the abundance If one were to pause and ponder the events of the past twenty months it might seem the burdens have outweighed the blessings A global pandemic a shaky economy rising prices and an uncertain future could easily drain away any feelings of gratitude Many families will experience for the first time an empty place at the holiday table Others will grieve the spiritual falling away seen in the lives of some they love A focus on the current state of this world would likely bring discouragement rather than appreciation Indeed left unchecked there is much that would tend to turn attention away from gratitude However please recognize that thankfulness is a state of mind not determined by one s situation There is always something for which to be thankful Especially for the child of God each day flows forth as a blessing from His hand and the future glistens with His promises to be with His own in this world while preparing for them an eternal habitation filled with beauty and His own glory As plans are laid and preparations undertaken for the family gathering consider the following reasons for Thanksgiving You were created by the hand of God in His own image for His purpose God cherishes you so much that He sent Jesus to pay the penalty of your sin God bestows His mercy and grace upon your life daily Every good thing you receive is a gift from His loving hand The Heavenly Father has granted blessings of health family and friends Weeping is only temporary but joy will come in the morning This life is merely a dressing room the great performance will soon begin Rise above the temporal distractions and soar on the wings of gratitude From the pen of the songwriter Henry Alford rings forth the challenge Come ye thankful people Come Raise the song of harvest home Be one of the thankful people Determine to be among those who adopt an attitude of gratitude Make Thanksgiving 2021 a time of reflecting on the goodness of God and responding with hearts overflowing with appreciation
