PROGRAM NOTES HOLIDAY POPS 2020 A December Holiday Pops concert conceived programmed and conducted by Maestro Ponti with our own Punta Gorda Symphony performed outdoors on a balmy Florida afternoon What could possibly be more fun After all we have been through this year we can certainly use a treat And this concert is FILLED with treats Starting off with a jubilant call to hear the Herald Angels Sing we take a cheerful Sleigh Ride and then hop on the Polar Express to visit Santa Along the way musical offerings deftly move between traditional and contemporary songs as well as seasonal film music selections Music in a Holiday program is often very familiar yet due to the art of Arrangers are made new and fresh to our ears On today s program there are many incredibly talented Arrangers represented including Disney veteran Ted Ricketts Miami Symphony alumnus Brian Balmages jazz classical and pop guitarist Richard Flauding the extremely versatile Sean O Laughlin and Jerry Brubaker renowned for his career with the U S Navy Band Of particular note are multiple works by Matt Riley including Pritchard s Welsh hymn Hyfrodol the Celtic hymn Of the Father s Love Begotten and We Three Kings as well as Bob Krogstad s medley of music by Anderson Lopez from the film Frozen The Bells of Christmas and Mel Torme s classic The Christmas Song Featured throughout the concert is Punta Gorda Symphony s Concertmaster violinist Ming Gao 12 PUNTA GORDA SYMPHONY Paul O Neill In 2017 Maestro Ponti introduced our audience to the remarkable work Christmas Eve in Sarajevo which released in 1996 on TransSiberian Orchestra s debut album We are thrilled to present it once again this year Trans Siberian Orchestra s Paul O Neill tells the story behind this composition We heard about this cello player born in Sarajevo many years ago who left when he was fairly young to go on to become a wellrespected musician playing with various symphonies throughout Europe Decades later he returned to Sarajevo as an elderly man at the height of the Bosnian War only to find his city in complete ruins I think what most broke this man s heart was that the destruction was not done by some outside invader or natural disaster it was done by his own people At that time Serbs were shelling Sarajevo every night Rather than head for the bomb shelters like his family and neighbors this man went to the town square climbed onto a pile of rubble that had once been the fountain took out his cello and played Mozart Beethoven and Lynrd Skynrd as the city was bombed TEMPO DECEMBER 2020 He came every night and began playing Christmas Carols from that same spot It was just such a powerful image a white haired man silhouetted against the cannon fire playing timeless melodies to both sides of the conflict amid the rubble and devastation of the city he loves Sometime later a reporter traced him down to ask why he did this insanely stupid thing The old man said that it was his way of proving that despite all evidence to the contrary the spirit of humanity was still alive in that place The work basically wrapped itself around him We used some of the oldest Christmas melodies we could find like God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Carol of the Bells part of the medley which is from Ukraine near that region The orchestra represents one side the rock band the other and a single cello represents that single individual that spark of hope MATTHEW RILEY COMPOSER ARRANGER Riley s compositions and arrangements include work for radio and television film Continued on page 15
