5Photo by Julia RussellOUR MISSION — As America’s Foremost Summer Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse produces world-class entertainment that creates unforgettable experiences for our audiences. We are dedicated stewards of an iconic and historic theatre, collaborating with extraordinary artists and creatives to shape the future of American theatre. Our commitment extends to being a driving force of economic impact for our region and serving as a premier cultural destination.Welcome back to our historic Ogunquit Playhouse! It’s wild to think we’ve already reached the halfway point of the season with so many great theatrical memories. Mykal Kilgore, Rob McClure, and the entire cast of GUYS AND DOLLS made “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat” a seminal moment in Playhouse history… and there’s more to come!We have long kept our eyes on commissioning not only a New musical, but a true Revisal – taking an existing property and revisiting it through a new lens. With great love for the iconic comedy The Philadelphia Story and its musical HIGH SOCIETY, this year we began the process of the first Ogunquit-commissioned Revisal. During this process we have been fortunate to adapt both the book and music selections, going back to the original play and film, the movie musical, and its Broadway incarnation, challenging our incredible “adapting team” to create a telling of this tale placed firmly in its time for today’s audiences. We thank those who believed in this idea and took the leap with us – BT McNicholl on the book, Greg Jarrett and Sam Davis on the score, choreographer Jeffry Denman, and director Matt Lenz. A very special thanks to The Barry Family Trust, Arthur Kopit’s representatives, and The Cole Porter Trust for giving us access to these beloved characters and their world. As you will see, the result is quite the theatrical experience! Our commitment to developing New Works is another Ogunquit Playhouse strength and this season delivers a knockout historical World Premiere on the night WHEN ELVIS MET THE BEATLES. Much loved Dan DeLuca (OP’s Tootsie, Nutty Professor) returns as journalist and narrator Chris Hutchins, Steven Telsey (OP’s A Little Night Music) plays Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, and Las Vegas legend Daniel Durston (OP at The Music Hall’s Million Dollar Quartet) is back as Elvis Presley, alongside an incredible cast of actor/musicians all under the guiding hand of the man who created our eternal MDQ, Hunter Foster. The 93rd mainstage season closes with the gorgeous epic TITANIC, delivered by director Shaun Kerrison (OP’s Hunchback of Notre Dame) and Music Director Ken Clifton (OP’s Miss Saigon). Then it’s off to The Music Hall once again for the holidays as we bring back Irving Berlin’s beloved WHITE CHRISTMAS.Thanks to everyone whose kind wishes on my 20th season as Executive Artistic Director has made this year so incredibly special. Your love and support for everyone at The Playhouse makes each season more memorable than the last. Every opportunity we have to entertain you is an honor we cherish.Enjoy the show!Bradford T. Throughout his tenure, he has transformed The Playhouse from a $1 Million seasonal theater to a $17 Million year-round operation. That kind of growth doesn’t happen without bold ideas, relentless dedication, and the belief that great theatre belongs in Ogunquit, Maine. It’s a joy to work alongside someone who not only produces exceptional shows, but also brings warmth, humor, and heart to everything he does. Brad is a true artist and a gifted producer, with an unwavering spirit that inspires us all.As we celebrate Brad’s 20 seasons—and 93 years of Ogunquit Playhouse—we recognize that none of this would be possible without you, our loyal audience, and the incredible community that surrounds and supports us.Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey! With gratitude,Deborah Warren Managing DirectorFROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

11SCAN & BUYCOMING SOON! AUGUST 28–SEPTEMBER 27GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!TO THE NIGHT ROCK 'N' ROLL ROYALTY SEALED ITS LEGACY!Welcome to HIGH SOCIETY! Everything old is new again! For all the right reasons, some stories endure and never get old -- as do certain songs. This is one of those lasting stories and Cole Porter’s hits are among the most enduring (and beloved) in the entire Great American Songbook. So, as we began the joyful task of concocting this brand-new musical comedy adaptation, we knew we had great bones to work with. Philip Barry gave us the story’s foundation in 1939 with his Broadway comedy The Philadelphia Story which a year later was made into a star-studded (Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant) film of the same name by legendary Hollywood director George Cukor. It wasn’t until 1956 that the musical film adaptation, HIGH SOCIETY, was made bringing Cole Porter, the enormously popular and prolific songwriter, to the team. It was the perfect choice to provide just the right flavor and flair of sophistication and elegance to the proceedings. The same story, somewhat adapted, now with a fizzy fabulous score and another super-starry cast including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and the soon to be princess Grace Kelly. Broadway and the West End later went on to spin this material in various ways at various times. Looking back at the films and reading through the various scripts and librettos, what really jumped out at me was the universality of themes. Sure, it’s a musical romcom at heart, but it’s chock full of sophisticated, thought-provoking ideas too. Themes ranging from self-discovery, forgiveness of our own and others’ flaws, and what it means to be a fully-rounded human being. It’s really quite modern and evolved in its thinking. The story and characters have a lot to say (and learn) about the challenges and complexities of having mature relationships; how they shift, grow and change (or don’t) and what it takes to have a healthy one. Something most of us are constantly contemplating in our own lives. (Yes, even the very rich and privileged, as you’ll see!) As our terrific creative team came together, during round-table sessions early this Spring, we knew we wanted to explore all of the above, but first and foremost, entertain you with a big, fizzy, fun, champagne-fueled party! We added some classic Porter tunes, some lesser-known gems, lots more dancing, and -- in keeping with the tradition of telling this enduring tale -- we assembled our own star-studded cast with today’s brightest Broadway talents to put us over the top! I hope you enjoy this special cocktail we’ve created for you. It’s equal parts heart, pizazz, and CHAMPAGNE! Thanks for being here! What a swell party it is! Cheers,Matt LenzDIRECTOR'S NOTES

28CREATIVE TEAMCOLE PORTER (Music and Lyrics) was born in Peru, Indiana in 1891 and died in Hollywood 73 years later. In between, he wrote some of the most memorable songs ever heard on stage or screen, among them “Night and Day,” “Begin the Beguine,” “You’re the Top,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “Love for Sale,” and “Just One of Those Things.” During the 1930s, his most productive decade, Porter provided a series of sparkling scores for such hits as Gay Divorce, Anything Goes, Jubilee, Born to Dance and Red, Hot and Blue. Despite a crippling riding accident in 1937 that left him in constant pain, he achieved his greatest commercial success in 1948, with Kiss Me, Kate. Porter’s name remains synonymous with wit and sophistication to this day.ARTHUR KOPIT (Book) Throughout a career spanning seven decades, Kopit authored an extraordinary string of admired, acclaimed, and award-winning stage works, beginning with Oh Dad, Poor Dad; Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet; and I’m Feelin’ So Sad, while still an undergraduate at Harvard. Other works include Indians (Tony Nominee, Pulitzer Prize finalist); Wings (Tony Nominee, Pulitzer Prize finalist); End of the World, with Symposium to Follow; a new translation of Ibsen’s Ghosts; the musical books for Nine and Phantom (both with scores by Maury Yeston); Road to Nirvana; Because He Can (originally entitled Y2K); A Dram of Drummhicit (written with Anton Dudley); and numerous one-act plays. More recent projects include Discovery of America, based on the journals of the Spanish conquistador, Cabeza de Vaca; and two new plays, Secrets of the Rich and The Incurables. Mr. Kopit was a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Lark Play Development Center, where he headed the Lark Playwrights’ Workshop, influencing and mentoring countless young playwrights. He was, up to his death, a tireless advocate for playwrights, theater makers, theater companies, and especially The Lark.SUSAN BIRKENHEAD (Additional Lyrics) received a Tony nomination, a Grammy nomination, and a Drama Desk Award for her lyrics for Jelly’s Last Jam; was nominated for a Drama Desk for Triumph of Love; was one of the writers nominated for a Foly Foly F F Fhi!Fhi!106 perkins cove road, ogunquit | 207.360.0802 | kikisogunquit.comfeaturingVisit Our New Location!WHO'S WHO

40Your invitation to celebrate! It’s always a good time to throw an “elegant, swellegant party,” but this year seams particularly celebratory. For starters, we’re celebrating Brad Kenney’s 20th season with Ogunquit Playhouse. As a creative team member who was part of his first season and has returned many times since, I am overjoyed to be invited to help bring one of his “dream projects,” High Society, to new, re-imagined life on this historic stage. Brad is not alone in his affection for this show and its unforgettable characters. Amazingly, it has kept the public’s attention for almost a century, ever since it first came to life on the Broadway stage as The Philadelphia Story in 1939. The star was Katharine Hepburn, who, of course, went on to repeat her role in the classic 1940 film version. But the genius behind it all was – and is – Philip Barry, the witty and uncommonly expert playwright who conjured a story of unusual depth. As British critic Gregory Wakeman shrewdly observed, in Barry’s play, “There is more realism in the acknowledgement of divorce and differences between a married couple. The audience is allowed to see that Tracy and Dexter both have faults. In this day and age, it seems more adult, modern, sophisticated than most others of the era.” For today’s audiences, Barry’s themes of tolerance, forgiveness, and understanding what it is to simply be human are as potent as ever. Then there are Cole Porter’s remarkable songs – some well-known, some which we were happy to rediscover. What helps is that Barry and Porter were writing around the same time and often about the same people -- the upper set, High Society – so the vocabulary of the dialogue and lyrics tend to match. It’s a perfect marriage – a case of True Love, to quote Porter himself. As we celebrate the upcoming centennial of Philip Barry’s brilliant work, we’re thrilled you’ve accepted your invitation to this summer party. Now… let’s misbehave!B T MNichol

50It’s astonishing to look back and see how much Ogunquit Playhouse has grown and evolved over the last 93 seasons. Creating world-class productions, assembling boundary-pushing creative teams, casting the finest established and freshest new artists and musicians, and welcoming producing teams who want our audiences to be the first to see their bold new works. This legacy of commitment and passion to the art is one we dearly cherish. From welcoming our first audience on a 1933 Summer evening in a renovated garage in Ogunquit’s town square, to earning national and international recognition for our countless comedic, dramatic, and musical productions, The Playhouse has grown from an ambitious 10-week company to an inspiring year-round, award-winning, self-producing Regional theater. The earliest days of one-week runs and Summer Stock tours evolved over time into what is now a 25-week mainstage season of showstopping productions, with a beloved annual holiday show at The Music Hall in Portsmouth. Our audiences have seen it all – splashy musicals, side-splitting comedies, edgy mysteries, and gripping dramas, starring some of the biggest names in the industry. Elaine Stritch, Buddy Ebsen, Helen Hayes, William Shatner, Cybil Shepherd, BD Wong, Keala Settle, Michael Urie, Latrice Royale, and so many more have spent Summers on our historic stage enthralling theatre lovers of all ages. For that reason, we were and still are a vacation destination for a hundred thousand or more every year. When Bradford Kenney became our Executive Artistic Director in 2006, we focused on bringing the freshest new Broadway musicals to Ogunquit, while maintaining that tradition of casting stars from film and television. Now in his 20th Season, we are seeing theatrical producers worldwide wanting to collaborate with Brad and The Playhouse to cultivate what may be the next great musical to hit Broadway. It’s a testament not only to the gifted artists and staff we employ, but the respect they have for you, our audience, specifically your love and appreciation for all theatre. In recent years, our New Works team has shepherded the development of such shows as My Best Friend’s Wedding (2024), Mr. Holland’s Opus (2022), Mystic Pizza (2021), Grumpy Old Men (2018), and Heartbreak Hotel (2017). Our Artistic and Production teams have reimagined productions like The Da Vinci Code (2023), The Nutty Professor (2022), Murder on the Orient Express (2019), From Here to Eternity (2017), and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2016); and been the first to produce Regional Premieres of Broadway’s finest including Waitress (2024), Beautiful The Carole King Musical (2022), The Cher Show (2022), Kinky Boots (2019), and Jersey Boys (2018).The Da Vinci Code, 2023 | HANNAH CRUZ, MICHAEL URIEPHOTO GARY NG

51Every year, from May–October, our idyllic campus comes alive with the sights and sounds of live theatre being enjoyed by audiences visiting Ogunquit from near and far. This shared community experience during the Maine Seacoast’s most beautiful time of year has built lasting memories for generations of audiences who have brought family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, and for many it has become an annual tradition. As we often hear, “It’s not Summer without a visit to The Playhouse.”Your continued love and support, in addition to the passionate commitment and generosity of our Annual Members, donors, sponsors, advertisers, seasonal staff, dedicated volunteers, creative teams, performing artists, and musicians is what keeps making this possible year after year. 55"We’re thrilled to be among the founding members of the Hartwig Legacy Society. We hope you’ll join us."— Noel and Carol LearyIn the 1930s, Broadway producers Maude and Walter Hartwig founded the Manhattan Theatre Colony and brought it to the summer resort town of Ogunquit. After four successful years, the Hartwigs moved the theatre colony from a converted garage on Shore Road to the present-day Ogunquit Playhouse. Their legacy endures today through generations of theatre professionals, audience members, and our beloved Playhouse. If you would like to learn more about how to include the Playhouse in your estate plans, or if you have already done so, please give us a call. We look forward to helping you leave your legacy.
