Jessica Teatom Boston Marketing Digital Illustration Procreate A house is an expression of the person living inside of it This is something I recently learned after buying my own first home this year I wondered if I could use my artistic expression to capture what is meaningful to others by not just drawing their houses but also engaging in some conversation about what is important to them I worked hard to piece together various parts of the homes to create a holistic view from the owner s perspective It ranged from drawing the flowers when they bloom in the spring to including the pets in the front yard I love being able to create a lasting memory that incorporates all of someone s best memories of their home In the past I had always used pen and ink but in 2020 while we stayed indoors I decided to pick up another hobby self teaching myself digital art on the iPad My art is a unique blend of vibrant stylized homes and handdrawn typography Because of its digital nature I have received requests to draw house portraits through word of mouth making it easy to share from anywhere

Kate Arnson Milwaukee Structural Engineering Don t Be an Animal Use a Coaster Needlepoint with wool felt These are needlepoint coasters that I made for my brother as a housewarming gift when he moved to California after graduation He always jokingly says Don t be an animal use a coaster I sketched out the animals with my younger brother and then it took a couple false starts before I figured out what medium I wanted to use This was my first needlepoint project so I was experimenting as I went along I used a standard diagonal stitch for the design a binding stitch for the border and backed the coasters with felt I ended up finishing this project a couple years late but my brother likes them

Dan Kalkman Milwaukee Architecture Milwaukee Sketches Ink Pen and Sketchbook Tragically we stop doing things that are good for us because we think we re not good enough It s never too late though It seems there is something important about manually manipulating and drawing out two dimensional things we see all the time Personally it s a meditation to connect my mind and hand and build a memory of a place by capturing it in a sketch

Shooka Sharafi Washington DC Interior Design In many countries within the continent of Asia Calligraphy is a form of meditative art In Iran it is taught at an early age to enlist discipline and focus as well as a poetic introduction to the Persian heritage Having moved to the United States at the age of 17 practicing Farsi and Arabic calligraphy has become a vessel for me to reconnect with my culture and be reminded of the ancient world beyond my white picket fence HGArt 2021 EXHIBITION DRAWING PAINTING PRINTMAKING

Sara Bidar Minneapolis Electrical Engineering Cleo Pencil on Paper Art is limitless There are no rules and endless possibilities I am the kind of person who always has a project or multiple in the works I often wish there were more time in a day to spend developing creative ideas Over the years I have learned that occasionally it is okay to scrap a composition because not everything will turn out as planned Still I love the challenges that come with tackling a new medium and the feeling of accomplishment I gain when completing a piece

PHOTOGRAPHY
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Early Buds Digital Photograph I have been taking photographs since high school but struggled to capture the beauty that seems so apparent in nature The same can be said for urban photography but in a grittier sense As I developed other mediums I came to realize the beauty lies in the details and invested in a zoom lens with a macro function and started exploring what it was that inspired a sense of beauty
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Grass Seeds Digital Photograph I now shoot with a small inexpensive camera and have forced myself to work harder at each shot rather than take lots of photos and modify them on the computer I usually take a quick shot of whatever catches my eye and then think about the visual cues move in on them and take several different shots to discover if there really is some beauty there HGArt 2021 EXHIBITION PHOTOGRAPHY
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Portrait I Digital Photograph I m also influenced by early taxonomic drawings that show overall images and then record details on the same page though oddly I ve never been terribly interested in naming and cataloging it s always the visual impact I m after
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Portrait II Digital Photograph I also grew up in the days of Kodachrome and I really miss those saturated colors To compensate I often use a setting that pops the colors up in a similar fashion I have plans to eventually use the close up florals as a jumping off point for a watercolor series based on a purer abstracted form and impressionistic color pallet HGArt 2021 EXHIBITION PHOTOGRAPHY
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Portrait III Digital Photograph I ve had largely dismal results photographing people but my son Fitz and I seem to be able to make it work a little I suppose I have less social anxiety knowing him so well

Marc L Italien San Francisco Architecture Big Electrics Erector Parts 1920s Lionel Locos and passengers cars I ve been into trains since I was able to communicate I shifted that passion to antique tinplate trains about 20 yrs ago I acquire the scrappiest toy trains because they cost less and look more realistic I avoid restoring trains but enjoy the challenge of getting these relics running again I ve set up a layout with vintage buildings signals and figures and have appointed my village with structures built of old Erector set parts Not encumbered with zoning ordinances building codes or watchdog community groups I build what I want where I want and when I want
Marc L Italien San Francisco Architecture All Aboard for Jersey City Erector parts 1920s Lionel Station and American Flyer Loco and passenger cars When I get bored running trains I love to photograph them with my iPhone I depict the same scenes with different trains and different lighting and editing effects for varied results I like to celebrate the patina that these 100 yr old trains have acquired while recalling the grit of prototype trains in real stations or the rapid movement of an overnight crack train HGArt 2021 EXHIBITION PHOTOGRAPHY

Ethan Fogle Washington DC Structural Engineering Serving Spoon Crab Apple Since 2017 I ve been carving spoons As I explored traditional carving methods I discovered green woodworking which has been used throughout history to produce all types of wooden ware and furniture including chairs bowls and spoons Green woodworking involves carving the wood soon after it s been cut while it still has a high moisture content This allows me to use hand tools A carving ax to make the primary shape A sloyd knife to refine the details And finally a hook knife for the bowl of the spoon The spoon changes as it dries and the final product is never completely controlled by me Once the spoon is dry I make the finishing cuts for a glassy smooth surface

Glenn Waguespack Minneapolis Architecture Intertwine Sisal Rope and Aluminum Wire As a foil to an architectural design process which is disconnected with the object of that process I decided to produce some work that is not generative or predictive of some thing to come but is more immediate simpler intuitive and improvisational The following objects are the result of or a recording of momentary encounters with physical materials I have deliberately limited the variables methods and materials in order to reduce the interaction to its essence to create something clear and to understand the impacts of my choices and the intrinsic potential of the materials In these form finding exercises the materials are rope and pliable wire
