DISTANCE How many love poems have been written to you How many words flung up like doves to the sky What longing faintly echoes in the earthly eyes we settle for when you are so far out of reach Any you distant bearing the scars of rougher bodies of things less than stardust who carried the hardness of ice and the trails of great journeys Like Zeus upon Leda they sought to have you whether it was your will or not And you with your preponderance of body your arc Your rise is still the stongest pull Let this be but another love poem in celebration of your lonely survival without the need to rip you from the sky Sara Nunnally Milwaukee Marketing Distance Poem

Beth Young Sacramento Architecture Redwood Cathedral 2017 Photograph I was taking a foggy early morning walk through the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail through the old growth redwood forest in Redwood National Park on the hunt for compositions with blooming rhododendrons when I spotted this interesting redwood trunk Despite the fires these majestic trees sometimes endure they still manage to thrive absorbing moisture and nutrients from the dense fog layer that is common on California s northernmost coast When I looked at the image back at home the forest reminded me of a serene redwood cathedral and the trunk an entry portal into this otherworldly scene With the tragic wildfires occurring throughout California and the West Coast I thought a hopeful and serene scene of wildfire resilience was appropriate for the art show Social Media Website Instagram Facebook optimalfocusphotography com optimal_focus optimalfocusphotography

Kate Arnson Milwaukee Strutural Engineering Lake Study 2 2020 Flat Woven Basket Round Reed 12 x 12 These two pieces were inspired by the sun over Lake Michigan During the pandemic I ve been walking down the lake almost every day I m a relative beginner at both quilting and basket weaving so these were fun experimental pieces to practice without committing to a larger project Both pieces were improvisational I was just playing around with the materials without a plan Their overall compositions share a defined horizon line and strong diagonals I photographed the pieces at McKinley Beach in Milwaukee the quilt square on the sand and the basket floating in the lake HGArt 2020 EXHIBITION FIBER ARTS GALLERY
Carol Sylvester Minneapolis Communications Pacific Tide Pool 2017 Dimensional Needlepoint The purpose of this month long online class was encourage design variation within a given pattern Each student was given the same drawing on canvas and the same threads with a basic set of instructions Each week we were given a set of instructions with suggestions for how to stitch the subject of that week s lesson but students were encouraged to think creatively about how to approach the subject make their own decisions about what colors to use and if they wanted to supplement the materials from their own stash what stitches to use and to some extent placement of the various elements The stitching itself wasn t hard but some of the other decisions were challenging as I usually recreate a design as the designer has stitched it and don t stray far from the given instructions I entered this piece in the Minnesota State Fair where it won a blue ribbon in its entry category the sweepstakes ribbon for needlepoint and two sponsored ribbons from a local needlework shop and local needlework group This piece won the several ribbons at the 2017 Minnesota State Fair including the Needlepoint Best in Show two vendor sponsored awards and first place in its sublot
Carol Sylvester Minneapolis Communications Coneflower 2019 Needlework Silk Shading with Silk and Metal Threads This was a class at a needlework seminar I attended in the fall of 2019 The project is stitched with silk and metal threads and was designed as a teaching piece for learning about shading with silk Each student was given a line drawing of the flower and a thread palette From that the students made their own decisions about the stitching process what range of colors to use whether to blend threads in the needle to given the illusion of additional colors lighting direction which affected what colors got used where and stitch choice Because it is not a large project at the end of the two day class many of us were finished or close to finished with the stitching We lined up everyone s design on the table so we could see all the projects It was interesting to see the color and stitching choices that others had made Everyone s piece was different despite working with the same design colors and threads HGArt 2020 EXHIBITION FIBER ARTS GALLERY

Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Earth in Balance 2019 2020 Glass Stone Seeds Metal Paint Tile Wood Christmas Tree 6 x 12 x 12 There is a Swedish tradition of creating hangers from the branches of the Christmas tree after the holiday I have made many such hangers and wanted to elevate them to the status of art without losing the function of hanging so this piece Earth in the Balance is a jewelry hanger and the third piece in my Anthropocene series The two sides of the central image represents the earth from near orbit and so creates the metaphor of humanity hanging all of our junk jewelry depending on your point of view from the planet HGArt 2020 EXHIBITION SCULPTURE 3D GALLERY
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Earth in Balance 2019 2020 Glass Stone Seeds Metal Paint Tile Wood Christmas Tree 6 x 12 x 12 The unexamined life is not worth living is a famous dictum apparently uttered by Socrates at his trial for impiety and corrupting youth for which he was subsequently sentenced to death as described in Plato s Apology 38a5 6 Wikipedia I believe this saying has more to do with examining the life around you in all its intricacies than it has to do with specifically examining your personal day to day living And so I wander through life looking for castaway objects extraneous bits of earth culture and industry The lost button the acorn the broken toy This is how I examine my life It s every bit as important to me and as interesting as watching the trees change color though it struggles to be as beautiful continued
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Earth in Balance 2019 2020 Glass Stone Seeds Metal Paint Tile Wood Christmas Tree 6 x 12 x 12 continued I find bits of cultural and natural detritus and store them in old peanut butter jars where I can see them They stick in my head and pop up when I find an object that begs to become sculpture When an artistic need arises color shape line etc an object will come to mind and demand its place in the narrative And that narrative is what I m after The current narrative geologically speaking is the Anthropocene A new geological era has been born and humanity is the midwife We have created this shift and are now called upon to steward the evolution that comes to pass because of it I believe art and design are the avant guard of change and by paying attention to the bits that have been tossed we can begin to imagine the future by recognizing what was not needed and simultaneously recognizing the beauty of the human endeavor even if it exists primarily as trash for decay is surely as much a part of life as is creation Yin and yang life and death circular design it s all the same thing continued HGArt 2020 EXHIBITION SCULPTURE 3D GALLERY
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Something Gederalist 2019 2020 Glass Stone Nuts and Seeds Fiber Metal Leather Grape Vine Bike Chain 6 x 12 x 12 continued The result then is that your trash literally I saved a bunch of cast off interior design samples becomes art and I hope maintains some value beyond our insane need to constantly grow which is the other side of this exploration Since my earliest serious work created maybe 45 years ago I have been exploring the areas between habitats the border areas where woods meet fields sea meets shore Biologists report these areas to be extraordinarily diverse Creativity is rife there and I am intrigued by what might happen My exploration of the border between future and past hopes to tap the border regions of our culture both through my photography and as a constant source of materials as I walk through life examining Thoreau observed that borders are where most of life occurs Life is creativity be ready
Patrick Doss Smith Minneapolis Structural Engineering Something Gederalist 2019 2020 Glass Stone Nuts and Seeds Fiber Metal Leather Grape Vine Bike Chain 6 x 12 x 12 Some of my earliest sculpture was made with found objects and often reflected the dance of life and death circularity The advent of the Anthropocene where humans are the largest environmental determinant on the planet gives our artifacts new meaning just as finding an object and turning it into art does This piece Something Federalist is the fourth piece in my Anthropocene series and is a direct response to Trump s declaration that federal buildings in the beltway be in a classical style So I designed a classical temple to the Anthropocene and to the decay of society HGArt 2020 EXHIBITION SCULPTURE 3D GALLERY
Amanda Pirlot Milwaukee Interior Architecture Design Concrete Arts I have a serious love for plants we currently have 36 plants in our home I began working with the concrete medium while making models in graduate school and really enjoyed the process of mixing pouring and releasing the items from a mold I took my love for plants and began making unique concrete planters which eventually evolved into creating a variety of modern home decor items that are both functional and beautiful I use a fine grain cement mixture and powdered pigment to create through body color Each piece I release from a mold is different from the last and I really like the fact that no two pieces I create are the same

Shauna Ubersox Minneapolis Administrative Services Mountains Beyond Mountains 2020 Collage Watercolor Ink Acrylic Paint on 1 1 2 Cradled Wood Panel I have been collecting mountain collage pieces for the last six years and after last year s HGArt show I decided to find a way to use all of them This piece was largely informed by the concept of time and evolution how over the last 4 6 billion years an uninhabitable red hot ball of gas and dust slowly became the planet we inhabit and in the process created us as a species The drawings within the collage represent both ancient organic acts of change trilobites sequoia rings Delicate Arch and hallmarks of the course of human evolution hand axe Lascaux cave paintings mo ai One side of the piece shows a cross section of the Earth and the lower atmosphere the other shows mainly fossils crinoid stems ammonites shells coral from places where the seas once covered the land It is amazing only have pictures of these mountains as they have been over the last 200 years since photography was invented through eons these peaks were forced upward by the slow moving tectonic plates that carry the continents or they were built by repeated volcanic eruptions like the formation of the Hawaiian islands Social Media Website shaunaubersox com Instagram ubersox_art

Jan Werner Minneapolis Administrative Services Project 10 Project 10 is an audio visual compilation of photography music and graphite drawings I ve created over the years Half are new created in 2020 and half are relatively retro The retro photographs of musicians are ones in which I was commissioned to candidly capture their craft and passion for it between 2006 and 2009 While the other older photographs are of my family they represent my longstanding interest in preserving youth and legacy via image My family is and has always been a big part of my inspiration for many creative endeavors continued
Jan Werner Minneapolis Administrative Services Project 10 continued The newer pieces represent a partial reflection on post COVID 19 life a quietus storm bringing forth new creative opportunities and new growth especially from a novice gardener No seriously I kill almost every living plant so the fact I grew something this year is a huge success in my book And yes two of those photographs are of my vegetables HGArt 2020 EXHIBITION MIXED MEDIA DIGITAL GALLERY
