Fire’s out, all’s OK, now what? When a Hydro First Responder answers a call, the procedures are very organized ensuring all actions are ecient and safe as possible. But what happens when they all get back to the station, exhausted and dirty? e amount of work remaining on their return may surprise you!Hydro’s First Responders service area covers about 100 square miles serving Blaine and Caddo counties. Response can extend beyond their service area if requested by neighboring departments to provide mutual aid on large scale incidents. When a call comes in, they are dispatched by a 911 Call Center located in Weatherford. eir duties when they return to the station are based on the category of the emergency. All emergencies fall into three main categories: Structure Fires, Medical Emergencies, and Wildland Fires. Structure Fires are usually the largest and dirtiest jobs. Not only basic dirt, grime & carcinogens but dangerous chemicals may be encountered at any time. Complete cleaning is necessary for all the equipment as well as the reghters. Firehose used must be thoroughly cleaned and dried before the next call. Because of this, extra rehose is needed to restock the truck right away. All gear is cleaned as needed, plus the reghters themselves, may need special decon. Everyone that responded to the call, whether they were on scene or not, helps out with the cleaning of gear & equipment. Cleanup may take several hours aer a call. Part of the planning for the new station will include a “Clean Room” for reghters. is facility will promote more thorough and ecient cleaning, especially for unusual/toxic substances, which is more common than ever before.Medical Emergencies are extremely varied, which aects the equipment and number of responders needed. Minor cleanup of reghters and equipment may be needed, but the most important task is to replace any medical supplies that were used.Wildland Fires, also dier from case to case. Both Structural Fire and Medical Emergencies may occur, causing extended cleaning to be needed. However, normally washing the trucks and the hoses used for this job is sucient. e nal, and extremely important step for every category, is the paperwork. Every First Responder knows how to write the reports and document each call properly. e report then is given to the Fire Chief who will review it and submit it to the State. Certainly the reghter’s job is time-consuming, as well as critical, from start to nish! A new station would accommodate todays larger trucks, additional equipment needed for modern re calls & overall re responder health & safety. Questions about the HFD or this project? Please reach out to any reghter! ank you for your continued support.
