19MCABEEMEDIA.COMGordon State College Launches Innovative Pre-Nursing Dual Enrollment ProgramSpecial Photo- Gordon State College Gordon State College (GSC) launched its first pre-nursing dual enrollment cohort for the 2024–2025 academic year, in partnership with Piedmont Henry Hospital and Henry County Schools. The 15-student cohort is part of Tomor-row’s Healthcare Today, a unique program designed to support high school students pursuing careers in healthcare and nursing. This partnership—the first of its kind in Georgia—oers students enhanced resources, including additional funding opportunities, on-site training and internships, and a competitive edge in gaining admission to a four-year nursing program. Students enrolled in the program may enter the healthcare workforce up to two years earlier than those following traditional nursing pathways. Courses are delivered both in-person and in hybrid formats by GSC at the Academy for Advanced Studies. Students will also have the chance to participate in paid sum-mer internships at Piedmont Henry Hospital. Admission to GSC’s nursing pro-gram is competitive, with around 30 applicants turned away each cycle, reflecting the national nurs-ing program denial rate of approx-imately 34%. However, as part of this partnership, participating stu-dents are guaranteed at least three admission spots annually. “There are several benefits with this partnership program, including that each co-hort will be guaran-teed at least three admission spots into the nursing program; I don’t know of any other college oering a similar benefit,” Samantha Bishop, professor of nursing and the direc-tor of nursing and health sciences at GSC said. “Another huge benefit is that when students enter this program, they’ll likely continue in the nursing school and help navi-gate the shortage we’re currently experiencing.” The next cohort begins this Au-gust, with students taking academ-ic core classes that meet both high school graduation and nursing program prerequisites. For more information about To-morrow’s Healthcare Today, con-tact Ric Calhoun, AVP of innovative education and strategic initiatives at GSC by email ricc@gordonstate.edu or Rabieh Hafza, director of STEM and innovative design for Henry County Schools at Rabieh.Hafza@henry.k12.ga.us. Students may check their eligibility and apply online at mygeorgiapromise.org. “Today is a great day for Georgia students and families as this next step in the launch of the Promise Scholarship further empowers parents to make the best decision for their child’s education,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “We know a quality education is critical to each child’s development and future prosperity. I’m grateful for the various state agencies that have worked so hard in the lead up to this launch, as well as our partners in the General Assembly who made this possible with last year’s passage of Senate Bill 233.” e Georgia Promise Scholarship Program is open to students who reside in a Georgia public school attendance zone that is on the Georgia Promise Scholarship School List produced by the Governor’s Oce of Student Achievement, and who have been enrolled in a Georgia public school for two consecutive full-time equiv-alent (FTE) counts (typically one academic year), or are a rising kindergarten student. Parents must have been Georgia residents for at least a year, with exceptions for active-duty military. Families may check their initial eligibility before the appli-cation opens by answering a few simple questions through the prescreen tool at mygeorgiapromise.org. “We know that students have dier-ent learning styles. e Georgia Promise Scholarship Program empowers families to utilize private schools, tutors, and occupa-tional, behavioral, physical, or speech-lan-guage therapists to best meet their unique educational needs,” said Georgia Student Finance Commission President Lynne Riley. “We are thankful for the support and vision of Governor Brian P. Kemp, Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Speaker Jon Burns, and the Georgia General Assembly in creating educational opportunities for Georgia families.” Georgia Promise Scholarship funds may be used for private school tuition, fees, and tutoring services provided by an educa-tor certied by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Over 250 private schools in Georgia have been approved to participate in the program. e next private school application window will be open from April 1 – April 30, 2025. e scholarship may also be used for textbooks and supplemental materials, services from a physician or licensed therapist for occupational, behavioral, physical, or speech-language therapies, curriculum, and transportation to a ser-vice provider (up to $500 per year). Up to 50% of unused Promise Scholarship funds in an academic year may carry forward to the following academic year. Students may apply to participate in the Promise Scholarship Program each calendar quarter. e application portal will open by 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 1, 2025. 40 HENRY FACTBOOK I 2025-2026Local Nonprofit Leader Inspires Youth Through Water Education From Mission TripFrom Mission Trip MOVEMENT MOVEMENT to Cristy McAbeeSometimes in life, a single experience can reshape our path entirely. For Mellisa Ellis, founder and CEO of Life Beyond Water, that moment came over eight years ago during a mission trip to Haiti. As a registered nurse serving on a medical and water project team, Ellis saw rsthand the urgent need for clean water and sustainable solutions. That experience became the catalyst for her nonprot organization—and a new life mission. “I started Life Beyond Water focused solely on water projects, but quickly realized this wasn’t something I could solve alone,” Ellis said. “If I wanted to create real, lasting impact, I needed to educate others—especially the younger generation.” Based in Stockbridge, Georgia, Life Beyond Water is a 501(c)(3) nonprot that has already helped more than 50,000 people both in the U.S. and internationally through clean water

41MCABEEMEDIA.COM MOVEMENT MOVEMENT projects and emergency water relief. Their work spans commu-nities in Ghana, Uganda, Mala-wi, North Carolina, and Middle Georgia. In the last two years, the orga-nization has expanded to include education-focused initiatives like its X-treme Summer Camp—a hands-on, interdisciplinary program that blends science, technology, engineering, arts, math, music, and reading. The goal: to teach children not just the science behind water, but the importance of protecting and preserving it. “People don’t often think about water,” Ellis explained. “Yes, it’s renewable, but it’s not limitless. In our digital age, industries like data centers use massive amounts of water for cooling, and most of us aren’t aware of just how much is being consumed.” This summer, X-treme Sum-mer Camps will return across Henry County, oered in week-long sessions starting in June. The camps are designed to spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and instill a lifelong respect for water conservation and sustainability. 43MCABEEMEDIA.COMFrom Sta Reports - March 11, 2025 The biggest stars from Atlanta’s spring NASCAR weekend are coming back to dazzle fans once again this summer. Not only will NASCAR’s best racers hit Atlanta Motor Speedway’s high banks for 650 miles of thrill-ing action – the biggest crowd-pleasers o the track will be back for the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart weekend June 26-28 The Sea Lion Splash was one of the most captivat-ing attractions of Atlanta’s spring NASCAR weekend – arguably second only to the white-knuckle racing. The entertaining and informative presentation showcases the relationship between an “adopted family” of rescued sea lions and their handlers. The sea lions not only show o their natural behaviors – they also perform tricks and even pose for photos with guests. These lovable and playful sea lions who warmed the hearts of thousands of fans in February will be back for more in June. “Our team is always looking for ways to make a splash with our fan entertainment and the sea lions certainly did that in February,” said AMS Execu-tive Vice President and General Manager Brandon Hutchison. “The Sea Lion Splash was the buzz of the Fan Zone in the spring so we’re thrilled they’ll be back to this summer to compliment all of the enter-tainment and activities fans will enjoy before the racing kicks o in June.” Fans can see the sea lions and enjoy all the other attractions found in the Fan Zone – like the Speedway Experience Powered by EchoPark Automotive, the Kids Zone, and NASCAR driver appearances – all free of charge in the complimentary Fan Zone during the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart weekend. The Fan Zone entertainment compliments a weekend full of exhilarating night racing action at Atlanta Motor Speedway, which has become notorious for hosing some of the best racing in NASCAR. The action and intensity will be kicked up a notch with racing under the lights on Friday and Saturday night, June 27 and 28. The NASCAR Xnity Series kicks o the action Friday night in the Focused Health 250. NASCAR’s brightest stars will shine under the lights Saturday night in the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart in the rst-ever Saturday night NASCAR Cup Series race at AMS.atlantamotorspeedway.comSea Lions and Speedway Thrills Return to Atlanta This Summer for the Quaker State 400 Weekend
