SPRING ISSUE | APRIL 20247Monterey Thompson opened Thompson Market in a small building equipped with a 3-door cooler and one bookshelf on Keys Ferry Street near the McDonough Square in May of 1999. When asked what’s changed in twenty-ve years Thompson explained that her clientele has shifted from mostly older patrons to more diverse shoppers of all ages. Specically, young millennial families, who are very conscious of what they’re eating. She also joked “I couldn’t have sold a piece of kale if my life depended on it back then.” In the early days of Thompson Market, Monterey sourced most of her produce from her family’s farm in Moultrie, Georgia. Thompson’s family farming background gave her the agricultural knowledge she needed. That knowledge, coupled with her gre-garious and outgoing personality gave Monterey’s farmer’s market the edge it needed to be success-ful in a competitive grocery industry. However, it wasn’t always easy and she had to be very conscience and selective of everything she purchase like most small business owners. “Back then whatever I didn’t sell, we ate, so If I wasn’t comfortable with eating it; I wasn’t going to buy it,” Thompson explained. Today, Thompson sources most of her store’s pro-duce from three farms in South Georgia and one in Florida. Thompson has been to every farm she buys from and tries to make a point to see each farmer annually. “I don’t just buy from anywhere,” Thompson explained. “I go to the farms in person and look at their product and have working relationships with the farmers.” Some of Thompson Market’s most popular farm-fresh produce include Silver Queen corn, vine-rip-ened tomatoes, seeded watermelon, butterbeans, collard greens, Vidalia onions, and peaches. Last year, Thompson Market sold a whopping 43,000 vine-ripened tomatoes! Monterey’s store also carries a large variety of Georgia Grown products from all corners of the state. Her favorites include Southern Straws, Dr. Pete’s marinades, Lauri Joe’s pepper jellies, and Georgia Olive Farms olive oils. “This is more than a business to me; this is a ministry,” Thompson exclaimed. Thompson Market is located at 218 John Frank Ward Blvd. in downtown McDonough. Daisy Mae’s Bakery recently opened inside the store at the end of March.

HENRYeatseats10 Just off the McDonough Square in a historic century old cottage resides a coffee house that prides itself on provid-ing a welcoming atmosphere for patrons to fellowship, and fresh high-quality coffee. Micah and Alicia Hodges, owners of Queen Bee Coffee company in McDonough serve up a variety of coffee drinks, they are also roasting two dozen coffee varieties off-site at their roastery and coffee shop in Forsyth, Georgia. Queen Bee Coffee Company’s start began all from a birthday gift purchase for Micah in ??? shortly after Alicia bought Micah his rst small coffee roaster intended for a hobby, it rapidly scaled into a retail business. In July of 2012 the Hodges sold their rst bag of coffee in an open market on the McDonough Square. Six months later the Hodges moved inside the marketplace and began selling their coffee, including their beloved Panama Joe coffee variety. QueenCoffeeeof
“I still remember a woman telling me how great the Panama Joe coffee was and adding that she thought it would be a money-maker,” Alicia Hodg-es said about their early days within the market. Their signature Panama Joe coffee is roasted with Mexican coffee beans and perfectly avored with vanilla mousse, caramel, and island rum. ?? Queen Bee sets itself apart by not only roast-ing its own coffee but by also sourcing directly from a variety of coffee bean farms from ten dif-ferent countries that hand pick their coffee beans. One country includes Honduras and the Hodges donate a percentage of their sales to clean water construction projects there. “They’re (farmers) not using a machine, every-thing is tripled picked by hand, which contributes to the quality we’re able to deliver with the beans we’re roasting,” Micah explained. Coffee farms that use machines are picking all the beans off the trees, including beans that are not ripened and ready to be picked. Other factors contributing to higher quality cof-fee, include their dedication to roasting in small batches, and selling directly to the consumer, which eliminates months of coffee sitting inside warehouses. “Coffee’s peak freshness starts to subside after about six months Outside coffee, Queen Bee also sells avocado toast, chicken salad toast, pastries, cinnamon rolls, and freshly baked bread. On April 13, May 11, and June 8 (second Sat-urday of the month) Queen Bee Coffee will host Movie Under the Stars at their McDonough loca-tion. HENRYeatseats14From the street, it looks like it’s just a coee shop but inside and behind the scenes, it’sabout a lot more than coee.About een years ago, the spark of an idea began with Alicia and me asking ourselvesa simple question, “What do we want life to be like in thirty years?” We needed to take action to make a dierence. In thirty years, we wanted our family to look dierent, we wanted our community to look dierent and as audacious as it sounded, we wanted places around the world to look dierent because of actions we made for our family in McDonough, GA. Alicia and I created Queen Bee Coee Co in a 300 sq building in 2012 and sold ourrst bag of coee on a borrowed folding table under a borrowed tent that summer. Westill remember the excitement of selling enough at a Saturday Market to go buy our owntent! rough the relationships with many faithful customers, we were able to grow andwe opened at 58 Grin St in December of 2013. Ever since those very humble beginnings, we have held tight to some basics - one ofthose basics is how and where we source our coee. We believe conscientioussourcing is ethical stewardship. rough our direct relationships with farmers, we areprioritizing fair wages and sustainable farming practices even without costlycertications. is helps farmers economically but also fosters a sense of partnershipwith the farmers. is partnership goes beyond our purchase of coee. QBCC donates$1 per pound of coee sold to water related projects in coee growing regions aroundthe world. is is an investment, not only in our community but in communities aroundthe world. Where we source our coee is not a matter of logistical convenience but a testament toour excellence, integrity and responsibility to you, our customers. It embodies coeeitself – a humble agricultural product with complex avors, stories and connections thatunites many people across continents and cultures. With each small batch wemeticulously roast, we are connecting all our friends – our customer friends and ourfarmer friends! Join us over the next couple articles as we share about dierent facets of cof-fee and how they can make or break a great coee. We’ll talk about the roasting, grinding, and brewing of coee. As you can see, we’re not just a coee shop. We are a hub for relational connections, intentional actions and also a place to drink delicious coee (and non-coee drinks too).We look forward to connecting with you!ROASTtheMICAH HODGES

This unique spot was crafted out of a friendship that ourished around travel, wine, and great food. “Lizcha and I have been close friends and travel part-ners since we met in our MBA days at Clayton State University. SPRING ISSUE | APRIL 202429DINERS’ dishTHE BRUNCH REVIEWCristy McAbee & Jerry BelcastroTWO EGGSCRISTY MCABEE Two Eggs in McDonough is one of my favorite places to take my family for brunch! I’m thrilled to hear they’re open-ing a location in Stockbridge this Spring for our northern Henry County residents! I’ve dined here several times and I’ve tried an assortment of their menu items including their pancakes, beignets, eggs benedict (benny’s at Two Eggs call them), and their big bowl, which is an assortment of roasted potatoes, breakfast meats, gravy and cheese. (I’m sure you can tell I’m dieting LOL!). No lie, everything I’ve eaten here has been fantastic, but my favorite is their (old fashioned style) pancakes. These pancakes are great on their own and are not your overly sweet type of cakes they have great avor similar to Cracker Barrel pancakes but better! One thing I espe-cially love about their pancakes is all of the avor options, including cinnamon roll, banana fosters, strawberries and cream, and sweet potato. My four-year-old son and I especially love the cinnamon roll pancakes! The cinnamon swirl is always perfectly swirled and balanced with cream cheese While their pancakes are phenomenal so are their Benny’s, Two Eggs eggs benedict options. I’ve ordered this dish a few times and the egg is always perfectly poached, which isn’t always easy to do (if you’ve ever poached an egg). I’ve even ordered eggs benedict at another local breakfast spot and was told they will not poach the egg! I mean why even oer it on the menu if you’re not going to poach the eggs? I’ve found many breakfast diners will no longer oered poach eggs but I know when I come to Two Eggs they do not shy away from preparing eggs and guest can have it “their way” here. The big bowl at rst glance does not seem to be something I would traditionally order but my husband ordered it on one visit and told me how fantastic it was. When we returned, I tried it, and it was delicious. The po-tatoes were perfectly roasted and the bacon, sausage, and gravy all melded perfectly together in one bite. Truly, if you haven’t eaten at Two Eggs, you have got to try them out. Two Eggs can be pretty busy on the weekends, so if you can get by on a weekday, I’d jump on it. Also, don’t forget to order the beignets as a starter, they’re always served fresh and can be accompanied with fruit too! Bon appétit!SCRAMBLEDJERRY BELCASTRO In keeping with the Brunch theme for this issue, I visited “Scrambled”, a relatively new restaurant in Henry County. It’s located at 3488 GA-155 N, McDonough, in the new Publix shopping center. I was greeted with a smile and seated in their casual dining area, that includes comfortable booths, and several 4-tops, which, in my guess seats about 75. The great thing about Scrambled is they serve many of their brunch menu items all-day. Their menu includes some great classics, such as steak & eggs, French toast, and many dierent types of omelets. The two items I quickly spotted on the menu were the chicken & waes, and the shrimp & grits. I decided to order the shrimp and grits. Being a staple in the South, there are dozens of variations of this dish. For me, it all starts with the grits. They need to be seasoned well, and above all, they have to be creamy, and Scrambled cer-tainly delivered on both. The grits were incorporated with smoked Gouda, celery, and a corn compote. However, the highlight of the dish for me, was the lobster sherry cream sauce! And I hadn’t even gotten to the star of the show, the Shrimp! Scrambled oers you the choice of grilled or fried shrimp. I went with the more traditional route and ordered grilled shrimp. The grilled shrimp were beautifully displayed in the center of the grits and they were grilled to perfection. I would denitely recommend this dish for the shrimp & grits lovers! Scrambled oers a nice variety of other menu items too. For breakfast you’ll nd dierent combinations of eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, pancakes, waes, French toast, grits, and potatoes. For lunch, you’ll nd salads, burgers, tacos, wings, fries. And they have a nice selection of kid’s choices that include a choice of burgers, chicken ngers, chicken and wae, and a pancake platter. The dinner menu looks very appealing, as they oer a choice of salads, burgers, pasta dishes, fried chicken and fried shrimp, pan-seared salmon, and a ribeye steak. On Friday’s, they oer an exclusive menu of crab cakes, sh of the day, salmon, pasta, surf & turf, and a scrambled platter that includes, fried shrimp, fried whiting, a salmon patty, fries and coleslaw.
HENRYeatseats30DINERS’ dishcontinued Scrambled oers a happy hour from 4pm to 6pm, Tuesday through Friday, and you’ll nd a great selection of appetizers such as, potato skins, onion rings, and spinach dip to men-tion a few. And they oer a $5 happy hour cocktail! Their hours are: Mon 8am-4pm Tues, Wed, Thur 8am-8pm Fri 8am-9pm Sat 8am-4pm Sun 8am-6pm. SPRING ISSUE | APRIL 202431inoinoVVibesThe Perfect Spring Wines Wine Tasting - Find your favorite If you’re feeling adventurous, why not dive into a little wine tasting session? Since I am always at PUR Zen -This month, I recently tried out Moscato, Rose, and Riesling vari-eties, and let me tell you, it is always a fun journey. During the wine tasting, I was able to sample several wines, usually from the same region or style, and learn about their characteristics, such as color, aroma, avor, and body. It’s such a fun activity learning and pairing different avors and foods. Nothing beats a nice charcuterie board and a few fun aromas. Moscato - My Spring Favorite For me spring screams owers, picnics, and extra laughter. It’s the season I spend the most time outside with my girlfriends and my dog, Mochi. The mood drives me to a sweet and fruity wine - the Moscato. Mos-cato can come in different varieties, includ-ing white, pink, or sparkling - Moscato just exudes a good time. Moscato comes from the Muscat grape, which has an aromatic oral and fruity aroma. This wine pairs well with light and fresh dishes, such as salads, cheeses, or fruit. It is also refreshing and easy to drink, making it ideal for picnics, brunches, or parties. It’s the perfect drink for a novice looking to explore new experiences with wine, and great for bringing a burst of sunshine to any occasion. Some must try pairings are soft and creamy cheeses like a brie or a charcuterie with prosciutto; fruity desserts, a chocolate cake, and even salads and melons will be enhanced by the Mos-cato’s avors. How to choose the best wine for spring? There is no denitive answer to what is the best wine for spring, as it depends on your taste, mood, and occasion. However, some general guidelines can help you narrow down your options. For example, you might want to opt for lighter and crisper wines, such as white, rosé, or sparkling, rather than heavier and richer ones, such as red or des-sert wines. I like to choose wines that reect the spirit of the season. Light, crisp whites, and refreshing rosés are the perfect com-panions for springtime gatherings; whether you’re enjoying a picnic in the park or a lazy brunch with friends. You might also want to look for wines that have oral, fruity, or herbal notes, rather than spicy, smoky, or oaky ones. Finally, you might want to consider the food you are going to pair with your wine, and choose a wine that comple-ments or contrasts it. If you’re curious, I’m currently drinking Salt of the Earth and the Jolee Rose. Cheers!Nancy is a lifelong resident of Henry County and the owner of Pür Zen Mimosa Wine Bar in McDonough. After attending several wine tastings with her friend and business partner she became enamored with the varieties and avor proles, as well as the social and cultural inuences of wine. She opened Pur Zen Mimosa & Wine Bar in April of 2022 with the objective of making wine more accessible and to help patrons explore pairings and varieties. When Nancy isn’t working she enjoys traveling and pampering her Shih-Poo, Mochi. Nancy Nguyen
