HENRYeatseats4PUBLISHER’S POSTIT’S FINALLY HERE! HENRYeats has been an idea of mine for over a decade and I’m delighted to nally bring YOU the inaugural issue! Inside you’ll nd a digital menu directory (divided by zipcodes) and features on Henry County’s favorite eateries, a wine colum from Henry County’s wine guru and owner of Pür Zen Mimosa Wine Bar, a local events calendar, and more! This is an interactive publication not only with links and videos but also a dialogue with our readers, so I want to hear from you! If you have any thoughts on how this publication could be better please share that with me; I’m all ears! If you’re organizing a public event taking place in Henry County please share that with me. I’ll be updating the events’ pages weekly. I truly hope HENRYeats makes your life easier when choosing where to dine and that it will be a valuable resource for you and your family! While HENRYeats was created for diners, it’s also a magazine that will promote and highlight the fantastic and diverse culinary scene in Henry Coun-ty! Just a few decades ago we would not have had half the options we have today. We are fortunate to have some of the best dining south of Atlanta! Know, this publication will not have listings for large chain establishments since the goal is to promote and highlight our local “ mom and pop” restaurants. You may see a few franchise options like Shane’s Rib Shack,(which was established in McDonough) but HENRYeats primary focus will be small local establishments. Finally foodies, if you discover a new favorite spot thanks to HENRYeats, please write me; I might just feature your review in the next issue! Cheers, CriyWrite Mecristy@henryeats.comCristy McAbee is a lifelong resident of Henry County and has worked in media and marketing for many years. When she’s not chasing one of her toddlers, doing laundry, or working, you can nd her on the tennis court or trying out a new restaurant. She’s a mom of two, Reagan (3) and Macie (1) and a wife to Rhett; the biggest Alabama fan in the state of Georgia.

WINTER ISSUE | JANUARY 20246OVERCOMINGOVERCOMINGa rebuilding storya rebuilding storyCristy McAbeeOVERCOMING THE ODDS: KIRBY G’S DINER & PUB I PHOTO: KIRBY G’S DINER & PUBAn old adage warns us “when it rains, it pours” which became a reality for Kirby G’s Diner and its staff in August of 2022. A dump-ster collided with the historical brick building off of the McDonough Square leaving major structural, electrical, and plumbing damages. “It just became one issue after another.” Martha Mills, Kirby G’s Diner’s general manager said. The accident not only impacted the building but also impacted the staff. “We went several weeks without being paid due to insurance issues and we lost a majority of our staff,” Mills explained of the impacts of the accident. Over the 16-month rebuilding period, the mid-century furnished diner lost over 80% of its veteran staff. “We still have ve employees with us but we’ve had to make a few adjustments in our operating hours since most of our staff are new and need more preparation time between the lunch and dinner shifts, “Mills said. During the rebuilding stage, the community rallied around the mainstay downtown restaurant providing nancial support through crowdfunding, which included the purchase of gift certicates. Kirby G’s Diner & Pub, originally named Chevy’s Diner & Pub has been in business for over a decade. Current operating hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:30am to 9:00pm with a short break in the afternoon to prepare for the dinner shift. To stay connected, follow Kirby G’s Diner and Pub on Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok.

HENRYeatseats22DINERS’ dishTHE ITALIAN REVIEWCristy McAbee & Toye WheelerANTHONY’S PIZZA & PASTACRISTY MCABEE “Anthony’s” as my household calls it has been in Mc-Donough since before I was in high school, and I gradu-ated over 20 years ago! This local favorite has a no-frills atmosphere but has always been charming to me. Walking in, I’m immediately transported back to my childhood a simpler time before social media, internet and Amazon Prime. Here, you’ll nd a 90s-style-big-screen television usually playing old game show reruns and vintage arcade games and candy machines begging for parents’ coins. It’s a nostalgic experience dining here for me and there’s no place quite like it. My family and I have eaten here at least a hundred times and we believe this is one of the best and most aordable Italian and pizzeria spots in Henry County. While I usually order a calzone or wings I’ve tried a lot of dishes here and I’d say my top three picks would be Anthony’s calzones, wings, and salads (Greek & Italian are my faves), I’ve never had a sub-par calzone at Anthony’s. It’s al-ways golden brown, brushed with butter, perfectly sprin-kled with Parmesan cheese, and hot. There’s a perfect balance of toppings, ricotta cheese, and sauce. And it’s ALWAYS delicious! I actually like the calzones much more than the pizza here, but my toddlers could eat their weight in the pizza. Their Greek salad dressing is made in-house and is always a perfect ratio of olive oil, red wine vinegar and herbs, so I opt for this dressing every time. The wings here are great and fried to perfection. I like that their wings have a good bit of meat on the bones and have a perfect texture; not too crunchy or chewy. If you’re ever in downtown McDonough for lunch on a weekday you can dine here for less than $7, which is unheard of in today’s economy! Even with record ination, Anthony’s has lunch specials including a drink starting at $6.49! As for service, we consistently have exceptional service here. Someone always greets me when I walk through the door, usually by my rst name (even if they haven’t seen me in over a month!) And this is one of a few restaurants we feel comfortable taking our little ones out to eat. You can be in and out in well under an hour and there’s plenty of nostalgic artifacts to keep them entertained! PASTA MAX CAFETOYE WHEELER Nestled in a cozy nook o of the McDonough Square lies an authentic, quaint, and romantic Italian eatery. Pasta Max, a charming restaurant, located on Grin Street across from Queen Bee Coee Company, was opened in 1994 by Douglas Zitz and his wife, Barbara (originally in Stockbridge) . A graduate of the Culinary Institute of Amer-ica in Hyde Park, NY, Zitz fashions his freshly-made pasta dishes from authentic recipes from Northern Italy, and each meticulously crafted dish does not disappoint! My husband, Marques and I have visited Pasta Max Café several times over the years, since we’ve relocated to McDonough from Atlanta eight years ago. Originally, the small, hometown restaurant drew us in due to its conve-nient location and desire to experience authentic Italian food at an aordable price. The colorful outdoor mural on the side of the building greets patrons, and the striped awning, brick walls, wooden oors and decor transport you to Venice without the luggage, passport and airfare. Light music playing throughout further adds to the delight-ful ambiance and allows patrons to carry on conversations without shouting at one another. There are 14 tables inside the quaint cafe, and most of them seat four people comfortably. Each table is adorned with tablecloths, soft candles, and linen napkins that fur-ther add elegance and charm to the rustic space. Despite the attention to detail, the prices are aordable. Most pasta specialties are priced under $20, and even the special creations- such as the Pecan-Crusted Chicken- are priced $25 and under. There is a separate drink menu that is lled with irty cocktails and an assortment of delicious imported and do-mestic wines and beer that can liven any spirit and make for a festive or romantic evening out. While the atmo-sphere is romantic, there is a kid menu available to order the little ones smaller portions of their Italian masterpieces. If you’re pressed for time, entrees can be ordered to go and all entrees ordered out still accompany buttery garlic rolls and a soup or a salad. All of Pasta Max Café’s entrees are served with soup, House salad, or Caesar salad along with the most buttery, soft, and sinfully freshly baked garlic rolls that I have ever tasted! The rolls and salad alone are enough for me to feel

WINTER ISSUE | JANUARY 202423DINERS’ dishcontinuedsatised, as the portions are robust. However, the real magic happens further in the course! Of the specialties listed on the menu, my favorite is the angel hair with chicken. The pasta is light, served with grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes (my fave), grilled and steamed veggies, and tossed in a tomato basil sauce that’s perfectly sweet and acidic all in the same bite. Other specialties include tri-colored bowties, agnolotti, stued eggplant, and lasagna. Pasta Max oers a variety of pizzas including shrimp, Greek, and classic pepperoni. Additional creations prepared include veal marsala, grilled salmon, and grilled jumbo sea scallops, Those with a sweet tooth can enjoy one of their decadent desserts, such as va-nilla cheesecake, chocolate Crème brûlée or Italian cannolis. Additionally, coee, expressos, and cappuccinos are avail-able for patrons who prefer a warm post-dinner beverage. With their expansive menu options and use of fresh high quality ingredients, you’re sure to nd a dish to please even the pickiest eater and even those with dietary restrictions at Pasta Max Café- Buon Apetito!Toye Wheeler is a mother of ve and has lived in McDonough for eight years. She’s the owner of Wheeler Tax & Accounting and worked as an English lecturer for several years. When she’s not carpooling her kids around town, you can nd her baking, reading, or working on her doctoral studies. “Photo Credit: Pasta Max CafePhoto Credit: Pasta Max CafePhoto Credit: Pasta Max CafePhoto Credit: Cristy McAbee

HENRYeatseats24inoinoVVibesA Drink of History, Culture, and PleasureT he next time you drink a glass of vino, reect on the fact that this popular and timeless beverage has been enjoyed for over eight thousand years! Made from fermented grapes or other fruits, it come in a variety of avors, colors, and aromas. Wine is not only a drink, but is also an important part of history, culture, and wellness. Wine and Health: Wine has been asso-ciated with many health benets, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. Wine contains antioxidants, polyphenols, and resveratrol, which may protect the cells from damage and inammation. However, wine also has some drawbacks, such as causing head-aches, allergies, and liver problems. Therefore, moderation is the key to enjoying wine and its health eects. Wine and Food: Wine is often paired with food to enhance the taste and experience of both. Dierent types of wine go well with dierent kinds of food, depending on the avor, acidity, sweetness, and body of the wine and the food. For example, white wine is usually matched with lighter dishes, such as sh, chicken, and salads, while red wine is more suitable for heavier dishes, such as beef, lamb, and cheese. Some general rules for wine and food pairing are: match the weight, contrast the avors, and complement the regions. Wine and Culture: Wine has a long and rich history that dates back to ancient times. Wine was used for religious ceremonies, social gatherings, and medicinal purposes by various civilizations, such as the Egyp-tians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese. Wine also reects the culture and identity of dier-ent regions and countries, such as France, Italy, Spain, and Argentina, where wine production and consumption are an integral part of their lifestyle and tradition. Wine is also a source of inspiration and expression for many artists, writers, and musicians, who have created works of art based on wine or dedicated to wine. Wine and Pleasure: Wine is a drink that can bring pleasure and happiness to peo-ple. Wine can stimulate the senses, relax the mind, and elevate the mood. Wine can also create a romantic and intimate atmo-sphere for couples, or a fun and lively one for friends. Wine can also be enjoyed alone, as a way of indulging oneself or escaping from stress. Wine is a drink that can suit any occasion, mood, and preference.Wine is more than just a drink; it is an em-bodiment of history, culture, and pleasure. It is a beverage that can enrich our lives and make us happy. Cheers! Nancy is a lifelong resident of Henry County and the owner of Pür Zen Mimosa Wine Bar in McDonough. After attending several wine tastings with her friend and business partner she became enamored with the varieties and avor proles, as well as the social and cultural inuences of wine. She opened Pur Zen Mimosa & Wine Bar in April of 2022 with the objective of making wine more accessible and to help patrons explore pairings and varieties. When Nancy isn’t working she enjoys traveling and pampering her Shih-Poo, Mochi. WINTER ISSUE | JANUARY 202425Henry County has gradually become the brunch headquarters of Atlanta’s Southern Crescent. I’ve spoken to several who live outside of Henry County who make a regular trip to dine at one of the over 25 brunch options in Henry County. It’s no surprise we’re having an inux of diners traveling from outside Henry County, with the selection and several locations serving a variety of mimosas, bloody marys, and other breakfast cocktails and gourmet coffees; it’s denitely worth the commute! One of my favorite places to frequent is Nana’s Chicken and Wafes, a southern and Cajun inuenced spot that opened in Southpoint Shopping Center in 2022. Nana’s Chicken and Wafes offers a number of mouthwatering options like the Cajun Grits Cakes topped with Crawsh, Fried Green Tomatoes topped with pimento cheese. and New Orleans’ style beignets. And there are many other independent mom-and-pop eateries that have opened in the last few years, as well, like Pür Zen Mimosa Wine Bar, Southern Fusion Dining, and A Cup of Comfort Bistro to name a few. WINTER ISSUE | JANUARY 202427BRUNSWICK STEW RECIPE I began making this Brunswick stew recipe a few years ago after my husband received a Pit Boss Electric Smoker for Father’s Day. Anyone who has cooked a pork shoulder knows it can feed a small army. After making a dozen pork sandwiches, I decided to look up a Brunswick Stew recipes online, and I found one that was almost perfect! The recipe just needed a few omissions and additions. I made this stew for a few gatherings I’ve had and I always have several guests ask me for the recipe. I gured wih all the recipe requests, this recipe was good enough to share in HENRY eats! • 4-5 cups of Shredded Pork Shoulder(I place my pork in mixer with paddle attachment to get nely shredded pieces)• 1 Bag Frozen Corn Kernels• 1 TBSP of Minced Garlic• 1 Finely Diced Onion• I Can of Diced Tomatoes• 1 Carton of Chicken or Vegetable Stock• 1.5 Cups of your favorite BBQ Sauce• 1 TBSP of Worcestershire Sauce• 6 TBSP of Butter• 1/2 TSP Black Pepper•1/4 TSP Cayenne Pepper (optional)• 1 TSP Salt• 1 TBSP Brown Sugar1. Melt butter in Dutch Oven or large pot, then add diced onions and cook until translucent about 4 minutes.2. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.3. Add corn, can of tomatoes, chicken or vegeta-ble stock, and bring to a boil. (do not drain tomatoes) 4. Add the BBQ Sauce, worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, pepper, cayenne, and pork. Mix well, and simmer for 20 minutes. 5. Garnish with green onion (optional) Taste and adjust to your liking: add more salt, BBQ sauce etc. BUT I think it always turns out just right as is!This stew freezes well and pairs well with corn-bread! I’ve also made it with 2lbs pork and 2lbs of shredded chicken and it was good, but not as good as 100% pork in my opinion. If you try the recipe, let me know what you think- cristy@henryeats.com.Tasty Brunch Recipe? Share it with HENRYeats for the chance to be featured in the Spring issue!Cristy’sChow

HENRYeatseats28Cristy’sChowGrowing up, my grandmother, Opal Hudgens, called “Nana” aectionately by my siblings, cousin and I, made Potato Candy for almost ev-ery holiday gathering we celebrated. This sugary treat is made from potatoes as the name describes, but do not be deceived by the name itself. This candy is divine and tastes similar to an indulgent chocolate peanut butter cup without the chocolate, I know that’s strange since there’s no chocolate, but you’ll just have to try it for yourself! • 1 Small Russet Potato• 6-7 Cups of Powdered Sugar• 1 Stick of Salted Butter Softened• 2 TSP of Vanilla Extract• Creamy Peanut Butter For filling about 3/4 cup1. Microwave peeled potato for seven minutes. (Pierce potato with fork 3-4 times and turn over 1/2 way through cooking). If you can not pierce completely through with a fork continue cooking 1 minute. Nana’s Potato Candy2. Let potato completely cool then mash.3. Combine mashed potato (should make about 1/2 cup), butter and sugar in electric mixer adding sugar one cup at a time and combining. 4. Once you’ve added 6 cups of powdered sugar check to see if you have dough consistency where it’s pliable, if not add 1/2 cup - 1 cup more powdered sugar and mix.5. Place dough in refrigerator for 30 minutes then place onto a surface liberally sprinkled with powdered sugar. Add powdered sugar to top of dough before and roll out with rolling pin to rectangle about a 1/4 inch thick. Divide into two sections if working on small counter space.6 Once rolled into rectangle, spread with peanut butter then begin tightly rolling along the long edge 7. After rolled, use a sharp knife to cut into 1/2 inch pieces. For Valentine’s Day consider folding dough in half to make a sandwich and cut out with small heart-shaped cookie cutters. Pictured above are Leonard & Opal Hudgens. Left Picture: Opal & Leonard pose while cutting their Platinum Wedding Anniversary Cake. The Hudgens reside in Stockbridge and have been married for over 74 years.
