outfit session tipsChoose the Right ColorsChoose colors that complement your hair as well as your complexion. Take colorpsychology into consideration. What message do you want to convey using color? Not sure which colors look best on you? Look at old photos or ask people you trust.Make Sure It Fits You WellYour outfit should fit you well. An oversized jacket or baggy blouse simply looksunprofessional. Add LayersIf you want to make your headshots interesting without using patterns and bigjewelry, layer your clothing instead. Just do this in moderation if you want it to havethe right effect though.Keep It Wrinkle-FreeEven though your schedule is busy, showing up to your headshot session in wrinkle-free clothing is non-negotiable. Consider Your NicheIf you want your headshots to appeal to employers and clients in your sector, factorthis into your outfit choice. If you’re a creative, find ways to add a touch of fun toyour headshot outfit without it being too distracting.

Here are some general guidelines for how to choose the right colors for yourheadshots and the effect that different colors and shades can have. Start with a Neutral or Solid ColorBasing your outfit on a neutral or solid color will ensure you don't overwhelm theframe. Think white, cream, black, or navy blue. Contrast for Black and WhiteIf you plan to take black and white headshots, choose contrasting colors. Forexample, if you're planning to wear a white shirt, opt for a black or navy blazer.Wearing a lighter shirt with an equally light jacket won't work for this style ofphotography.Keep Color Combos SimpleLayering is great for adding interest to your headshots, but if you're going to do it,make sure your color combinations work well together. Reduce Light Reflection Using Deeper ColorsIf you're planning to have your headshot photo session outdoors, choose deepercolors instead of pale, light colors to avoid looking washed out due to lightreflection.Draw Attention with Bold ShadesWhile a bold necklace or earrings will draw attention to your face, it will place thefocus on your accessories. If you want to draw more attention to your face in yourheadshots, wear bolder shades around your neckline.Consider BrandingIf your headshots will be used on your website and marketing material, consideryour brand colors. Find small ways to work these colors into your outfit so that yourphotos are complementary. Here's a look at the psychology of colors. Choose the most appropriate optionsfor your headshots:White: purity and innocenceBlack: mysteriousOrange: optimisticYellow: intelligent and joyfulRed: passionate and energeticGreen: nurturing and growth-orientedPurple: creativePink: playful and lovingBrown: secureGold: successfulGrey: unemotional

Avoid Too Much DistractionPatterns, logos, and loud accessories will all take the focus off your face, which iswhy it's best to stick to solid color tops and blouses and toned-down accessories. It's also best not to wear tops that are too low cut as it will have the same effect. Make Sure it Fits You WellEven though your headshots only focus on the upper half of your body, it's stillimportant to make sure your top or blouse fits well as this looks the mostprofessional.Long Sleeves are BetterShort sleeves add skin to the edge of a headshot, and can also be distracting, whichis why long sleeves are better. Avoid Transparent ClothingSince you will be taking photos in proper lighting, make sure that your top won't betransparent in bright light. Choose the Right UndergarmentsWhatever you decide to wear, make sure that your bra is not visible. Check for strapsand any bumps that the fabric might create under your top. Go ProIdeally, if you have some extra budget, it's highly recommended that you hire aprofessional to assist you with your hair on the day of the session. Don't Make Big Changes at the Wrong TimeIf you are planning to cut or color your hair for your headshots, don't do it too closeto your session. You never know when something might go wrong, or you aren'thappy with your new look.Opt for a Natural StyleNot only should you feel comfortable, but people should still be able to recognizeyou. Opt for a hairstyle that you would likely wear to work. Up styles can reallyopen up your face and neck.Don't Go Crazy with the CurlsCurling your hair for your headshots is fine, but don't go overboard, not if you wantyour photos to still look like you. Hairspray is Your FriendWe've all had to deal with fly-aways but they're not ideal for your headshot sessionas they can be difficult to edit out. Have a small can of hairspray on hand. How to Style Your Hair

Hire a ProfessionalAs mentioned with your hairstyle, it’s best to hire a professional makeup artist foryour headshot session. Keep It NaturalYour headshot makeup should make you feel comfortable and confident, so if youdon’t generally wear red lipstick, this is not the time to do it. Keeping your makeupas natural as possible is the best way to prevent it from becoming a distraction.Avoid HIghlighterBecause highlighter can make your face appear shiny, it’s best to avoid it on the dayof your shoot. Go Easy on the PowderRemember, your photographer is going to use a high-resolution camera, whichemphasizes the details of your skin, including your pores. Too much powder canresult in an unflattering result. What to Do About Makeup

Hydration is EverythingDrink enough water in the week leading up to your session to keep your skin lookingsupple and healthy.Book a FacialFor an added layer of hydration, treat yourself to a facial a few days before yoursession. This is not the time to try any new peels!Schedule a WaxUnfortunately, facial hair can stand out in a headshot, which is why you shouldschedule a wax a few days before your session. Do not wax the day before yourshoot as you could still be red. Exfoliate and MoisturizeGently exfoliating your skin a few days before your session will clear away any deadand dry skin and flakes. Make a point of moisturizing twice a day – this is over andabove your facial.Get Some SleepGetting enough sleep makes a massive difference to your face. You will look moreenergized and your makeup artist won’t need to cover up puffy under-eye bags. Caring for Your Skin

WOMEN'S LOOK 1. This is the most classic look for business headshots. You can't go wrong with a black blazer. Make sure you choose a well-fitting blazer that accentuates your body shape, as this will be thekey item to this look. Styling the blazer with simple black trousers and a white blouse bringsthis outfit together. Don't forget, you can also remove the blazer while taking photos whichgives you two great looks out of one. Blouse - Vince Camuto / Blazer - Vince Camuto / Trousers - MM La Fleur / Shoes - M Gemi

WOMEN'S LOOK 2 A skirt and blouse option is a perfect combination for the woman looking for a more femininestyle. This outfit here is a great example of a monochromatic look, using different tones ofneutral beige throughout the outfit. Wear your blouse tucked in to accentuate your waist lineand add a belt for extra detailing. If you're looking to add a little personality to this outfit, a silkscarf is a great accessory to give this look a little flair.Blouse - MM La Fleur / Skirt - MM La Fleur / Scarf - Banana Republic / Belt - Express / Shoes - Ann Taylor

WOMEN'S LOOK 3 Work in a more casual environment? White is a great option for those looking for something alittle more carefree. I love pairing a white silk blouse with jeans and nude shoes, which givesyour look a little more of an unassuming feel. If you're looking to add a tailored aspect to thisstyle, throw on a white blazer, which screams statement item.Blazer - BB Dakota / Jeans - Mother Denim / Blouse - Vince/Shoes - Karl Lagerfeld / Earrings - Nordstrom

Opt for Solid ColorsSolid colors are always better. Not only do they look more professional but they’renot distracting. Think Twice About WhiteA white shirt is certainly professional but keep in mind that does reflect more light. Ifyou are going to wear a white shirt, then it is better to wear something darker over ittoo. Fitted is BetterWhatever you wear, make sure it fits you well. Baggy, loose clothing just looksunprofessional. This is also why it’s important to choose and try on any outfits a fewdays before your shoot – it gives you the chance to tailor your shirt and jacket orcome up with a plan B. Undershirts Are Not RecommendedYou might wear an undershirt daily, but they do tend to show up in photos sincebrighter lighting is used. It’s best to skip the undershirt for your headshots. Choose Your Appointment Date WiselyIf you are going to cut your hair before your headshot session, don’t do it the daybefore. Cutting your hair a few days before ensures the lines look a bit more natural. It also gives your hair a chance to recover should something go wrong. Shave at the Right TimeIf you generally shave the hair on your head every few days, shave it a day or twobefore your session for the best results. Avoid Razor BurnWhile your face should look neat the day of your session, you also want to avoidrazor burn. Whether you’re shaving your face clean or simply tidying up your facialhair, use the right shaving cream and moisturize your face afterward. Tidy Up Ear and Nose HairDon’t forget to trim any nose and ear hair before your session. What to Do With Your Hair
