It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing ofmy mother Hazel Sparks Mayes. On July 21, 1950Hazel was born to Charlie and Hattie Sparks in Wharton, Texas. She was one of three girls in a familywith 13 children. Hazel lived the majority of her life inHouston, Texas. She dabbled in several professions onher life journey such as a beautician, she owned a recordstore and helped run a catering company, amongst otherthings. However, she seemed to find her calling as a governessand house keeper in the 90’s. Hazel played an impactfulrole in the lives of several families. Having an especiallytremendous influence on the children of these familieswith her overwhelming love and infectious disposition.Ultimately she embraced these families as her own andthey in turn embraced her enthusiastically. In a word a Hazel could be described as a lioness. Shewas fierce and fearless when needed and at the sametime she cared deeply for those who were important toher. She was not without flaws and she faced manychallenges in life. However, she knew who she was andshe walked her path with dignity and grace. She was a wonderful loving, caring, mother to two sonsHoward J. Farris and Johnny R. Mayes Jr. She enjoyedloving and spending precious moments with hergrandchildren and her family. Hazel returned home toGod on March 15, 2025, at her home in Houston, shewas 74 years old.She was preceded in death by her Father: Charlie SparksMother: Hattie Sparks; Brothers: Arthur Sparks, CarlSparks, Lonnie B.
