His personal details of each work provide a rare, honest, inside look at an in-demand musician’s life, thepersonal experiences and emotions molded into music. Dillingham writes, “This album is dedicated to mylate father, Larry Eugene Dillingham. His birthday is October 12, and the release date of the album waschosen in honor of him. The songs were developed in the months following my dad’s passing in Septem-ber 2023. Many of them emerged from voice memos on my phone while singing along I-65 during severaltrips back and forth between Chicago and Bloomington, IN. The fall of 2023 brought both ups and downs—it felt like an emotional rollercoaster at times. Within the course of a week, I received news that I wouldbe losing my dad and my teaching position. Simultaneously, my debut album was set to release dayslater, and I was preparing to lead a band at the Chicago Jazz Festival for the first time. Amidst all this, Ihad additional performances, including some at the Green Mill and more at the Chicago Jazz Festival. The emotional intensity during that period was overwhelming. As I reflect on it, I feel proud of the materialthat emerged. Grateful for my family, I decided to represent some of them with a song on this record.”Grammy Award winning journalist Neil Tesser, who wrote the liner notes for Halcyon, comments onDillingham’s experiences, both in the personal side and the musical translation, and states at the end ofhis notes, “That this journey transpires internally makes it no less thrilling, and no less picturesque, thanthe globetrotting adventures undertaken by the mythical Odysseus in his effort to return home — to hishalcyon refuge — as recounted by Homer. It's fitting that Dillingham has filled this narrative with equallypersuasive poetry.” (Tesser’s complete liner notes, Christian’s notes, along with other backgroundmaterials are available in this flipbook.)HALYCON01 Dimepiece 7:1102 Halcyon 5:38 03 Sinclair’s Struggle 6:1404 Lowlands (Gillian Welch) 4:0505 What’ll I Do (Irving Berlin) 5:4206 T.G.T.T. A note from ChristianThis album is dedicated to my late father, Larry Eugene Dillingham. His birthday is October12, and the release date of the album was chosen in honor of him. The songs weredeveloped in the months following my dad’s passing in September 2023. Many of thememerged from voice memos on my phone while singing along I-65 during several trips backand forth between Chicago and Bloomington, IN. The fall of 2023 brought both ups anddowns—it felt like an emotional rollercoaster at times. Within the course of a week, Ireceived news that I would be losing my dad and my teaching position. Simultaneously, mydebut album was set to release days later, and I was preparing to lead a band at theChicago Jazz Festival for the first time. Amidst all this, I had additional performances, including some at the Green Mill and more at the Chicago Jazz Festival. The emotionalintensity during that period was overwhelming. As I reflect on it, I feel proud of the materialthat emerged. Grateful for my family, I decided to represent some of them with a song onthis record.Dimepiece- This song is dedicated to my wife, Krista. In addition to being a perfect 10, sheis the rock of our family. She keeps us all balanced and rooted, providing a sense of calmto our sometimes-frantic lives. This is reflected in the 5/4 bass line ostinato — It remainsgrounded while providing strength, foundation, and support. Halcyon- for Shannon, Destiny, and Skai. This melody, accompanied by a piano ostinatoaims to evoke feelings of nostalgia – a portal into the distant past and a sense of warmth. The blues, deeply embedded within the solo section, provide comfort during our mostpainful moments, and yet remain a fitting choice for celebration. The combination ofnostalgia and blues represents the culmination of my family’s experience last fall.Sinclair’s Struggle- This song reflects my own personal struggles – the challenges of beinga light-skinned black man, the battles with anxiety and depression, and the ongoing questfor self-discovery. Struggle is an integral part of the human experience, and it manifestsuniquely for each of us. The fade-out ending mirrors the ongoing nature of this struggle.Lowlands- Gillian Welch, one of my favorite songwriters, has a storytelling style unlikeanyone else’s. Once, when my daughter Cora was around one year old, I was playing alongwith this song, and she danced around through the entire track. The feel and vibe of thistune perfectly captures Cora’s joyful spirit. What’ll I Do- One of the many great compositions by Irving Berlin. The melody and lyricsoffer an incredibly rich pallet, and the song practically plays itself. It has remained one ofmy favorite tunes from the American Song Book.TGTT- During my time in graduate school, my teacher, the great Jeffrey Turner, introduced me tothis composition. Ever since then, I have wanted to explore it further. Like many of Ellington’scompositions, this piece is perfect in its original format but still leaves room for creative possibilities.I dedicate this interpretation to my mom, a pianist, and one of my earliest musical influences.

Page 12

Twice Lost- My dad had battled kidney disease for several years. In the spring of 2022, Ireceived a phone call from my mom—the kind that you always dread. It was apparent that Ineeded to fly home immediately and prepare to say goodbye. However, he miraculouslysurvived an operation, and we were blessed with another year with him. Making peace withloss is a strange feeling— especially if it doesn’t happen in the moment you expect. Withthat feeling still raw, I tried to capture a glimpse within this piece.Peace Awaits- During our darkest moments it can often be hard to believe, or evenconceive of there being a light at the end of the tunnel, or ultimately peace. However, calmfollows every storm. Life, though changed, continues, and can still be beautiful. When weare ready, peace awaits. I hope that others can find solace from this piece.Eleanor Jean- This song originated from a melody my first born, Eleanor Jean, hummed oneafternoon while drawing at the kitchen table. Her tune caught my ear, and I immediatelybegan trying to build from her idea. Eleanor embodies light and positivity, serving as aconstant example for me in how to live and treat others. Boots of Spanish Leather- Bob Dylan has significantly influenced me over the years, andthis song ranks among my all-time favorites of his vast catalogue. The impact of this songhas always resonated deep within me. The combination of storytelling and deceivinglyintricate accompaniment makes it truly special. My intention was to approach his tunedelicately, viewing it through my own lens.

HALCYON LINER NOTESLike the notes he plays, Christian Dillingham chooses his words with care and withprecision. The word halcyon, he reminds us, describes “a period in the past that wasidyllically happy and peaceful.” Implicit is the breeze of nostalgia, which carries a whiff ofregret: such days do belong to the past. Implicit, too, is the idea of refuge.Originally, the term “halcyon days” referred to the weeklong period each year when theGreek god Aeolus was said to have calmed the winds and quieted the world for hisdaughter Alycone (Halcyon). The fact that Dillingham’s own family plays so prominent a rolein this repertoire, in compositions directly inspired by them, may not have been intentional. But it does seem more than coincidental. He indeed spent much of the time leading up to this album in contemplation of halcyondays. The death of his father, in September 2023 — coupled with the release of his firstalbum just weeks later, and a slate of performance commitments — set him adrift on anemotional sea. He navigated it, in part, by leaning on his wife (“the rock of our family,”honored in “Dimepiece”) and his own children; by recalling conversations with his dad; bywriting many of these songs. They shape the soul of this recording, not by sloshing in thepast, but by mapping the present from a changed perspective.Dillingham works in jazz groups throughout Chicago but he also performs with a half-dozenclassical ensembles, and his classical training (like that of Julius Tucker) threads itselfthroughout Halcyon. It sometimes even vies with the blues, the bedrock for so much musicof our time — the prism for essential expression, erasing castes and divisions, portrayingdark times or celebrating the light that beckons.Dillingham says, “The combination of nostalgia and blues represents the culmination of myfamily’s experience last fall,” and the spirit of the blues pervades this music to a degree notpreviously heard in the bassist’s bands. It inhabits Matt Gold’s tender guitar, now searing, now tender, on the title track and “Sinclair’s Struggle” in particular. The blues even color aSongbook classic by Irving Berlin, never considered a blues guy, to reshape it as a country-western waltz, akin in sound and spirit with the Bob Dylan sachet that closes the album.“Twice Lost” will haunt me for months. Dillingham’s father almost died the previous year, and the piece shimmers with the pain and acceptance of two such reckonings. Thedisquieting nebulae of “Peace Awaits” catch my breath with every listen. It conveys therestless thrash of emotional upheaval. And when it resolves, you may feel the weight liftfrom your own shoulders, readying you for the upturned smile of the children’s song thatfollows (“Eleanor Jean” being adapted, in fact, from a melody hummed by Dillingham’seldest child.)These songs slot together to tell a wordless story, and these renditions —employing Tucker’s enormity of concept, Gold’s chameleonic sensitivity, and QuinKirchner’s cinematic scenic design — magnify each chapter. With or without their real-lifecontext, they trace a journey: a latter-day odyssey through the groves and warrens ofemotions and memories. They form a travelog of resilience and growth. That this journey transpires internally makes it no less thrilling, and no less picturesque, than theglobetrotting adventures undertaken by the mythical Odysseus in his effort to return home — to hishalcyon refuge — as recounted by Homer. It's fitting that Dillingham has filled this narrative withequally persuasive poetry. NEIL TESSER
