Exercise: Matching Shots to Story Emotion and Information Part 1 Watch a clip or scene from a television drama. Watch your clip without sound and write down types of shots. Then use the guide and what you can tell from the scene or know about the show to ascertain emotional value or story information. You may notice things such as editing, sound, color etc. that we have not yet discussed. Feel free to comment on those, too, though they are not the main focus of this exercise. Part 2 Using the same clip, identify types of lighting use. This time, instead of writing down camera shots, write down lighting and then the emotional or story value. Notice that the lighting sheet uses shot numbers instead of shot number. This is because you may have the same lighting set up for many shots. Part 3 Find another group to work with. Show them your clip without comment first. Then show them your clip and read from your charts to explain how shot choice and lighting supported the narrative and dramatic value.
