5Photo by Julia RussellOUR MISSION — As America’s Foremost Summer Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse produces world-class entertainment that creates unforgettable experiences for our audiences. We are dedicated stewards of an iconic and historic theatre, collaborating with extraordinary artists and creatives to shape the future of American theatre. Our commitment extends to being a driving force of economic impact for our region and serving as a premier cultural destination.Welcome back to our historic Ogunquit Playhouse! Our 2025 season rolls on welcoming you to our new production of GUYS AND DOLLS. Some of Broadway’s biggest and best have come together to put their unique spin on the music, movement, and story so many of you already know and love. Just wait until you see what Emmy-winning director/choreographer Al Blackstone and this extraordinary creative team and cast have in store for you.Next up, we have been incredibly honored to work closely with the Cole Porter Trust and others on the Playhouse-commissioned version of HIGH SOCIETY. A unique selection of Porter’s greatest, glittering songs are being interpolated into this new production, inspired by the iconic 1956 movie musical starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra. Writer BT McNicholl (The It Girl, 101 Dalmatians), choreographer Jefrry Denman (OP’s American in Paris), and director Matt Lenz (OP’s Grumpy Old Men) spice up Philip Barry’s screwball comedy The Philadelphia Story, with Broadway’s song and dance man Max Clayton (OP’s Crazy for You) returning to charm, alongside Playhouse favorites Sara Gettelfinger (OP’s The Cher Show) and Mike McGowan (OP’s A Little Night Music) as his former in-laws.For those who love the history of rock ’n roll, everything thus far has been a warm up act to the world premiere WHEN ELVIS MET THE BEATLES. A real night in music history comes to life as The King meets The Fab Four. Director Hunter Foster (OP’s Million Dollar Quartet) brings it all to you in this larger than life story featuring the greatest hits of these five musical legends. And finally we close our 93rd season with the sweeping epic TITANIC, another true life, heartfelt story of the passengers who lived it. In the style of Les Misérables and Ragtime, this is one of Broadway's most glorious musical scores in the hands of director Shaun Kerrison (OP’s Hunchback of Notre Dame), Music Director Ken Clifton (OP’s Miss Saigon), and William Ivey Long’s stunning original Broadway costumes. We have your boarding pass ready for this ship of dreams and an experience that will transform you.Even after 20 seasons as Executive Artistic Director, I’m continually inspired by the limitless love and support you have for our Ogunquit Playhouse. Your passion fuels us to make each season more memorable than the last and every opportunity we have to entertain you is an honor we cherish. We thank you for taking this amazing journey with us!Enjoy the show!Bradford T. KenneyExecutive Artistic DirectorFROM THE EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

7OUR VALUES — Ogunquit Playhouse strives to value and respect every individual regardless of age, ability, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or spirituality. The Playhouse is dedicated to creating a safe, open, honest, and equitable workplace of choice for current and future creative artists, performers, and staff. By reflecting these values, we hope to foster a deep sense of belonging and provide an uplifting, welcoming space for everyone on stage, behind the scenes, among our volunteer corps, and our audience.Dear Patrons,This year marks an extraordinary milestone at Ogunquit Playhouse – Brad Kenney’s 20th Season at the helm as Executive Artistic Director. To celebrate Brad’s visionary leadership, we did what he’d never expect—we planned a surprise benefit Gala in his honor, featuring none other than Broadway legend Bernadette Peters in concert. Brad, ever the producer, is usually the one behind the curtain making magic happen for others, but this time the spotlight belongs to him. We hope you join us for this special evening on Monday, August 4th.Brad dreams big…and he delivers! Over the past two decades, he has transformed The Playhouse from a $1 Million seasonal theater into a $17 Million year–round organization. That kind of growth doesn’t happen without bold ideas, relentless dedication, and the belief that great theatre belongs in Ogunquit, Maine. It’s a joy to work alongside someone who not only produces exceptional shows, but also brings warmth, humor, and heart to everything he does. Brad is a true artist and a gifted producer, with an unwavering spirit that inspires us all.As we celebrate Brad’s 20 seasons—and 93 years of Ogunquit Playhouse—we recognize that none of this would be possible without you, our loyal audience, and the incredible community that surrounds and supports us.Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey. With gratitude, Deborah Warren Managing DirectorFROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

11SCAN & BUY"Let’s take a bath of light." — Betty Berman in Times Square, around 1960Guys and Dolls is a glorious celebration of New York City, and more specifically Times Square. In the earlier part of the 20th century, the bright lights of The Square were a sensation never before seen in the world. It was an epicenter for culture, entertainment, and artistry where boundaries were pushed and dreams were made all under the intense color and energy of these enormous illuminated words, pictures, and symbols. Times Square drew crowds from all over the world and these seekers came to represent the diversity, self-expression, and vitality of the city itself. This is a place where people crash into each other, for better or worse. What they want, how they feel, and what they believe moves them from one side of the sidewalk to the other and that shared enthusiasm and ambition set the stage for our story.I am amazed at the way this musical which premiered on Broadway in 1950 still resonates with audiences and performers alike. During our audition process we saw hundreds of phenomenally talented actors, many of whom mentioned their love for this show. I would ask them why and the answer was always something along the lines of “The songs! The characters! The way the words, music, and dances all flow together so brilliantly!”This is a show that has been a gold standard for musical theater for 75 years and it has been an absolute privilege to become a part of that legacy, and to share it with you here and now. This continuum is one of the things I love most about theatre – we soak it up, make it our own, and pass it on. Abe Burrows, one of the writers of Guys and Dolls spoke eloquently about the importance of comedy in a difficult world. “The fact is that comedy is actually too serious to be taken seriously. It may be that comedy touches such deep emotions that people feel better if they can just dismiss it as trivial. Just take a big belly laugh. I have watched people laughing, and for a moment they look-and are-absolutely helpless. Vulnerability. You can be assaulted while you are laughing.” While we have no intention of assaulting you here tonight, I do hope that perhaps, through the act of laughter, you might open up just a bit and let these wonderfully flawed characters into your heart. We thank you for joining us and making what we do not only possible, but meaningful. Now… let’s shoot some craps!Sincerely, Al Blackstone Director/ChoreographerDIRECTOR'S NOTES

25CREATIVE TEAMFRANK LOESSER (Music and Lyrics) One of America’s great composer/lyricists, Loesser began his songwriting career during the Depression, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, where he spent the next eleven years collaborating with composers Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz, and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include “Two Sleepy People,” “Jingle Jangle Jingle,” and “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You.” The first song Loesser wrote words and music for was “Praise The Lord and Pass The Ammunition,” during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war included “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year,” “A Slow Boat To China,” and the 1949 Oscar-winning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” In 1948, Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the experiencing more than 50 countries. This led to the hugely influential and successful Guys and Dolls in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956, Loesser wrote the libretto, music, and lyrics for The Most Happy Fella, an impressive score of more than 30 musical numbers using operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios, and choral numbers. In 1960, he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow, and a year later wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Loesser’s final show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during out-of-town try-outs. frankloesser.comJO SWERLING (Book) Born in Russia in 1897, Jo Swerling was a playwright, screenwriter, and vaudeville sketch writer. 50It’s astonishing to look back and see how much Ogunquit Playhouse has grown and evolved over the last 93 seasons. Creating world-class productions, assembling boundary-pushing creative teams, casting the finest established and freshest new artists and musicians, and welcoming producing teams who want our audiences to be the first to see their bold new works. This legacy of commitment and passion to the art is one we dearly cherish. From welcoming our first audience on a 1933 Summer evening in a renovated garage in Ogunquit’s town square, to earning national and international recognition for our countless comedic, dramatic, and musical productions, The Playhouse has grown from an ambitious 10-week company to an inspiring year-round, award-winning, self-producing Regional theater. The earliest days of one-week runs and Summer Stock tours evolved over time into what is now a 25-week mainstage season of showstopping productions, with a beloved annual holiday show at The Music Hall in Portsmouth. Our audiences have seen it all – splashy musicals, side-splitting comedies, edgy mysteries, and gripping dramas, starring some of the biggest names in the industry. Elaine Stritch, Buddy Ebsen, Helen Hayes, William Shatner, Cybil Shepherd, BD Wong, Keala Settle, Michael Urie, Latrice Royale, and so many more have spent Summers on our historic stage enthralling theatre lovers of all ages. For that reason, we were and still are a vacation destination for a hundred thousand or more every year. When Bradford Kenney became our Executive Artistic Director in 2006, we focused on bringing the freshest new Broadway musicals to Ogunquit, while maintaining that tradition of casting stars from film and television. Now in his 20th Season, we are seeing theatrical producers worldwide wanting to collaborate with Brad and The Playhouse to cultivate what may be the next great musical to hit Broadway. It’s a testament not only to the gifted artists and staff we employ, but the respect they have for you, our audience, specifically your love and appreciation for all theatre. In recent years, our New Works team has shepherded the development of such shows as My Best Friend’s Wedding (2024), Mr. Holland’s Opus (2022), Mystic Pizza (2021), Grumpy Old Men (2018), and Heartbreak Hotel (2017). Our Artistic and Production teams have reimagined productions like The Da Vinci Code (2023), The Nutty Professor (2022), Murder on the Orient Express (2019), From Here to Eternity (2017), and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2016); and been the first to produce Regional Premieres of Broadway’s finest including Waitress (2024), Beautiful The Carole King Musical (2022), The Cher Show (2022), Kinky Boots (2019), and Jersey Boys (2018).The Da Vinci Code, 2023 | HANNAH CRUZ, MICHAEL URIEPHOTO GARY NG

55"We’re thrilled to be among the founding members of the Hartwig Legacy Society. We hope you’ll join us."— Noel and Carol LearyIn the 1930s, Broadway producers Maude and Walter Hartwig founded the Manhattan Theatre Colony and brought it to the summer resort town of Ogunquit. After four successful years, the Hartwigs moved the theatre colony from a converted garage on Shore Road to the present-day Ogunquit Playhouse. Their legacy endures today through generations of theatre professionals, audience members, and our beloved Playhouse. If you would like to learn more about how to include the Playhouse in your estate plans, or if you have already done so, please give us a call. We look forward to helping you leave your legacy. 67Journalist and author Alfred Damon Runyon’s love for Prohibition-era New York has lived on for decades through his distinctive short stories featuring gamblers, hustlers, and gangsters with colorful nicknames like “Good Time Charley” and “The Seldom Seen Kid.” Three stories in particular – Blood Pressure, The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, and Pick the Winner – were licensed by producers Cy Feuer, Ernest Martin, and adapted by playwright Jo Swerling for the “musical fable of Broadway” that would eventually become known as GUYS AND DOLLS. But it wasn’t going to be easy. The road to success in the world of theater is often paved with missteps and complex evolutions and this show was no exception. The first draft of the show was declared “unusable” by the producers who then hired radio comedy writer Abe Burrows (Duffy’s Tavern) to “do surgery” on the book for director George S. Kaufman. This situation was made more complicated by the fact that composer Frank Loesser had already written the majority of the score. What’s more, Burrows had to write the dialogue to match the speech patterns of the actors already hired as the leads. GUYS AND DOLLS had its out-of-town tryout in Philadelphia during October/November 1950 (a challenging 41 performance run), before debuting on Broadway the week of Thanksgiving that same year. It was worth it though, as the show opened to overwhelmingly positive reviews, a rarity for that era, with critics praising its faithfulness to Runyon’s storytelling and heralding its arrival as being of great significance to the future of American musical theatre. The history of the show proved all of the prognostications valid. GUYS AND DOLLS went on to run 1,200 performances, winning 5 Tonys including Best Musical (1951); a West End run of 555 performances and a command performance for Queen Elizabeth (1953); a six month residency in Las Vegas at The Royal Nevada hotel and casino, the first ever Broadway musical on the Vegas Strip; revivals in 1955 (Walter Matthau as Nathan), ’65 (Playhouse favorites Jerry Orbach and Anita Gillette as Sky and Sarah), ’66, and ’76 (all-black cast featuring Robert Guillaume as Nathan and Ken Page as Nicely-Nicely); 1983 West End that ran for 4 years beginning with Sir Laurence Olivier as Nathan before dropping out for failing health and being replaced by Bob Hoskins; back to Broadway in 1992 with Nathan Lane as Nathan Detroit (the character from whom he took his stage name), Peter Gallagher as Sky and Faith Prince as Adelaide; 1996 London with Imelda Staunton as Adelaide; 2005 West End with Ewan McGregor as Sky and Jane Krakowski as Adelaide; 2009 Broadway with Oliver Platt as Nathan and Lauren Graham in her Broadway debut as Adelaide; 2015, 2017 (all-black), and 2023 UK productions. We’d be remiss to overlook the 1955 MGM film version starring Frank Sinatra (Nathan), Marlon Brando (Sky), Vivian Blaine (Adelaide), Jean Simmons (Sarah), and Stubby Kaye (Nicely-Nicely), which took home Golden Globe wind for Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy, and Best Actress: Musical or Comedy for Jean Simmons, with Oscar nominations for Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, and Score.Director Rob Marshall, whose sister Kathleen directed the world premiere of My Best Friend’s Wedding here last season, is currently in development on a new film adaptation for Sony/TriStar, with casting rumors including Zendaya, Lady Gaga, Channing Tatum, and Hugh Jackman.Like the best of Rodgers and Hammerstein, August Wilson, and Shakespeare, great theatre lives on throughout history, with each new generation discovering and adapting these timeless stories through the lens of current times. We're grateful to have shared this version with you!A Heavenly Trip
