A NOTE FROM OUR FLOTILLA COMMANDER I m very excited that our flotilla is growing with two new members being added just this month and several more new member prospects We have volunteered more than 1300 hours so far this year This is a fantastic start to 2023 Thank you all for your hard work and be looking for more opportunities as the boating season gets underway Semper Paratus FC Stephen Yancey A NOTE FROM OUR FLOTILLA VICE COMMANDER What s on deck for Spring 2023 As we move forward with Spring we have several goals that we are trying to achieve for our Flotilla First is to work with our members to become Vessel Examiners to help our Flotilla better serve our boating community with our free Vessel Safety Checks We currently have 8 active Vessel Examiners We are looking to grow our program by adding at least 5 new Vessel Examiners by the beginning of Summer Our second Spring project that we are focusing on is building our instructor s program so that we have more instructors to do member training and to work with our public in doing more public education classes Finally our Operations program is getting going It is study study study time It will take a while to get everyone that is in training ready for their QE Qualifications Examiner test but we hope to have a few of our members ready by this Summer Semper Paratus VFC Lynn Miles Q What prompted you to join the Auxiliary A I have worked in public service since I was 18 and I have the desire to help others as best I can I enjoy learning new things meeting new people and boating and being on the water whenever possible The Auxiliary seems to be a good mix of all of these and a good way for me to give back to the community NEW Q What activities do you want to achieve first A I hope to become certified as a VE and move forward from there SPOTLIGHT MEMBER Q What is a personal goal you would like to achieve as an Auxiliarist A I plan to eventually become an AUXOP and I would like to hold an office someday Q A What is your profession I am the IT Coordinator for Athens Limestone County 911 Q A What extra talents or hobbies do you bring to the Auxiliary I m inquisitive and dabble in a little bit of anything and everything from computer programming and cyber security to outdoor survival bushcrafting hiking and swimming snorkeling to woodworking and tinkering in the garage I m also looking to get certified in SCUBA in the near future if scheduling and funding play into my favor WELCOME TO OUR FLOTILLA TONY TONY MIMS

SPRING SUMMER PUBLIC AFFAIRS V F C LY N N M I L E S Public Affairs activities have already been put to motion this spring and we have been successful with making contacts in our communities both here in Guntersville Alabama and in Huntsville Alabama We have had many members already turning in hours for Public Affairs Activities Our two most recent events were the Community Kite Festival sponsored by the City of Huntsville at John Hunt Park and the St Patrick s Day Bingo Night sponsored by the Guntersville Lions Club Look out for more PA opportunities in the coming months And check out these fun photos Photographs courtesy of Lynn Miles and Eugene Adger

F S O H R LY N N M I L E S This has been a very active few months for the HR program in our Flotilla Detachment Leader Kenesha Fudge and VFC Lynn Miles have been working with many new member prospects We have been sending out information on the CG Auxiliary along with helping 7 new member prospects with their applications Kenesha and Lynn hope to have all of these new member prospects applications in to our Director s Office in the next couple of weeks Once our new members are in we will work with them to get them through their Core Training CT and their Basic Qualification s Course II BQCII Then we will focus on getting the new members into the Vessel Examination and the Program Visitor programs Also we will be assigning mentors to our new membership to work with them in their qualifications and chosen missions We look forward to a great recruitment year B OAT I N G SA F E T Y T I P O F T H E M O N T H Spring is in the air and boating season has begun We have many sailors in our Flotilla along with recreational boaters So sailors do you know how windy is too windy for boating Dangerous weather including strong winds rough seas lightning and waterspouts can be perilous even on a lake like ours Generally wind gusts of 34 knots 39 mph or more are often strong enough to capsize small boats especially when they catch the boater off guard So before you set sail check the weather report and file a float plan to ensure your safety 21 23 APRIL 2023 H R U P DAT E RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION Eighth District Eastern Region 2023 Spring District Training REGISTRATION IS OPEN for Spring DTRAIN at the Holiday Inn Eastgate 4501 Eastgate Blvd Cincinnati OH 45245 Plan to join us for Friday Fun Night Dinner on April 21st where It s 5 Oclock Somewhere Grab a margarita in the hotel bar and wear your favorite Parrothead attire for our delicious dinner buffet Training Highlights for Saturday April 22nd Interested in expanding your knowledge in operations Attend Auxiliary Navigation AUX Weather or the annually required D8ER Operations Workshop and or the RM TCT Want to be more effective in promoting Auxiliary activities Attend the Public Affairs Publication training to learn how to take quality photos and write publishable articles Want to help your new membership develop into tomorrow s leaders Join us for Mentorship Training and see what tools are available to get new members involved immediately Send your new members to DTRAIN to learn about Auxiliary missions and what they need to do to become qualified and active in their chosen mission The Flotilla Leadership Course will also be available Look for the full training schedule on the DTRAIN portal After a day of expanding your knowledge on Saturday spend the evening at the Commodore s Banquet for a night of ceremony and fellowship Join us for the full event 21 23 APR or just the training on Saturday 22 APR 2023 Register now on our DTRAIN Portal at the following link https www uscgauxiliaryd8er info If you plan to stay at the Holiday Inn Eastgate be sure to use the link on the portal to book your room
