The selection of the Wausau/Weston areaas the host city for these championships isa testament to the collaborative efforts ofthe Greenheck Turner Community Center,Visit Wausau/Central Wisconsin CVB,Weston, Rothschild, Schofield,Kronenwetter, Wausau, Mosinee and Rib Mountain. We are excited to host the World HorseshoeTournament in 2026, which will be excellent forthe community and summer tourism. Our team isdedicated to making this a memorable experiencefor all attendees, and we look forward to thepositive impact it will have on our local economy.Aaron Mull, Director of Community Services COMMUNITY IMPACTGTCC expansive facilities have made Weston a regional tournamentdestination- bringing additional tourism dollars to the region. In 24-25,GTCC hosted seven tournaments with visiting teams traveling fromsurrounding states. We estimate more than 1,200 hotel room nightswere booked as a direct result of events on the turf. Families traveled from Antigo, Athens, Des Moines, Green Bay, Janesville, Kaukauna, Marathon, Marshfield, Merrill, Medford, Muskego, Neenah, Rib Lake, Waunakee, St. Louis, and Minnesota just to name a few. The GTCC has welcomed corporate groups,business leaders and nonprofits such as Kwik Trip,Everest Area Optimists, Habitat for Humanity,Somerville Architects, new teacher orientation,DCEYB board meetings, basketball boardmeetings, Swiderski, Greenheck Group andUnited Way of Marathon County.2026 World Horseshoe Tournament WI Ice Arena Management AssociationThis year we estimate over 50,000 visits with 30,000 visits to the new addition alone. This created an additional economic impact of over $1,000,000 for the region in its first year. This August we celebrated our first yearanniversary with an open house whichincluded turf time, ice skating andsimulator play. More than 350 peopleattended this free event marking asuccessful year of tournaments, events,practices, memberships, familyprogramming and communityinvolvement. The turf arena has been agreat expansion of the gyms, meetingsrooms and ice allowing more people toenjoy the space. This year we estimateover 50,000 visits with 30,000 visits tothe new addition alone. This created an additional economicimpact of over $1,000,000 for the regionin its first year.ONE YEAR STRONG!REC Flag Football will kick off on Saturday, September 6, for children in grades 1through 6. This program is organized in collaboration with the Varsity Footballteam, whose players will assist with officiating.On August 7, athletes were invited to a special Skills & Drills camp. Group Fitness Members Giving BackNovember was filled with baseballcamps that brought kids from 12surrounding communities, Boys RECbasketball in the Field House, our firstsoftball tournament, a new partnershipwith WI Conquerors Soccer league, aThanksgiving Day Skate which raised for area nonprofits, and aZumba class on the turf that collectedhundreds of cans of food for theMarathon County Hunger Coalition. GTCC staff welcomed new staff and studentsinto the turf arena for kick-off celebrations,band rehearsals, athletic practices andemployed 40 before/after school care staffmembers caring for kids at fiveelementary schools. REC Flag Football increased participants by 94 and expandedto include a 1-2nd grade divisionallowing more kids to play. After years of dreaming, months of planning and18 months of construction we opened the doors fora grand celebration of the new Greenheck TurnerCommunity Center on August 1, 2024. 17 Vacation Fun Days were organized for kidson days when the District did not have school, providingfamilies with affordable care while kids played on theturf, ice skated, climbed the rock wall, played courtgames and enjoyed lunch. Summer Camp kids werethe FIRST youth to play onthe turf last summer. camp kids and 30counselors went on 10 fieldtrips, caught 20 frogs in lakeMountain bay and usedmore than 1,000 waterballoons while exploring theoutdoors, making newfriends, playing gaga,kickball and crafting. They created STEM projects,leprechaun traps, made ice cream, had trivia days, and had a surprise visit at the endof the year by a clutch of baby chicks. This year we celebrated birthdays at GTCC with familiesand friends from around the state.
