GOOD Morning Wilton's Back to School Guide 2021-22

Page 1

Page 2

From the Editor…Every year GOOD Morning Wilton!publishes a Back to School guide with the typical information for the start of the academic year. It’s been a few years since the start of school has felt "typical" so we’re sure everyone is looking forward the 2022-23 school year. As Superintendent Kevin Smith said at the first Board of Education meeting of the year on Aug. 17, "We are going to have an absolutely amazing school year this year, you can mark my words." The district publishes Back to School information on its newly-revamped website. You can find everything from meet-the-teacher dates to parent handbooks and orientation information. Each school will also send school-specific materials home to families. In the GMW Back-to-School guide, we’ve collected the essential information for the entire district all in one place. We’ve got phone numbers, dates, and as much information as possible that we hope you’ll keep this page bookmarked for easy reference. We’ll continue to update this guide as needed–and welcome any suggestions or additional information we may have overlooked. [Readers can always contact GMW by email.] Heather Borden Herve GMW Editor & Publisher

Wilton Public Schools continue to follow COVID guidance from the CT Department of Public Health (CT DPH), the CT State Department of Education (CSDE), the district’s medical advisor, and the CDC. ! The CT DPH now has a "Launching into Healthy Learning" initiative, with various resources to support school communities and COVID response: • vaccination clinics for interested families • self-test kit distribution for schools to share with families who require them • The “Test-Mask-Go” strategy for people with mild respiratory symptoms (see next page) Links: • Wilton School District’s COVID protocols for 2022-2023 • CT DPH guidance • CDC guidance Health & Safety Protocols Protocols are subject to change, the district will notify families of any changes. • Hand sanitizing stations at entrances, in classrooms and in corridors • Facilities will be cleaned and disinfected in accordance with CT DPH guidance • Routine daily cleaning of buildings; bathrooms and health officies will be cleaned and disinfected daily • Increased HVAC fresh air flow per CT-DPH guidance; mechanicals maintained by full-time WPS HVAC specialist and inspected/certified by independent agent The district will maintain the Daily Tracker with case counts. Schoology/Streaming At-Home Learning for COVID-19 Positive Students At the end of last year’s state legislative session a law was passed making "double teaching" illegal. According to Superintendent Kevin Smith at the recent Bd. of Education meeting, that means the district’s quarantine learning plan — allowing COVID-positive students quarantining at home to video stream live classes and access Schoology — is now against the law. Smith said the district continues to pursue this at the CSDE level and will advise the school community when he knows more or if there are any changes to this policy. For now, students who may need to quarantine will continue to access learning through Schoology.Wilton Public Schools COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols

Test-Mask-Go The district has opted to follow the CT-DPH "Test-Mask-Go" strategy, to increase the number of days of in-person learning; improve the social/emotional/physical wellbeing of students, staff, and families; and enhance learning recovery. Respiratory/COVID Symptoms Mild Symptoms: Children and staff with mild respiratory disease symptoms (e.g., infrequent cough, congestion, runny nose, sore throat, etc.) have the option to attend school in-person if they: • self-test each day symptoms are present • are fever-free (< 100°F) and feel well enough to participate • do not live with anyone who has had COVID-19 in the past 2 weeks, • can wear a mask consistently and correctly (if facility operators require it) • test negative for COVID-19 before reporting in-person on every day they have symptoms, and one final test on the morning their symptoms have completely resolved. Moderate/Multiple Symptoms: Individuals with respiratory disease symptoms should stay home until symptoms resolve if they: • self-test • have a fever (≥ 100°F) or feel feverish (stay home until fever resolves for 24 hours without medication) • live with a person who recently tested positive for COVID-19 (within the past 2 weeks) COVID-19 Positive Test Results • Call the child’s school nurse • Stay home and isolate for at least 5 full days from date of testing or symptom onset. (Day 0 is date when symptoms start or, if asymptomatic, date of positive test) • Return to school on Day 6 if: • Fever free without medication for 24 hours • Symptoms have significantly improved • Mask is worn consistently and appropriately through Day 10 Close Contact with COVID-19 Positive Individual NO symptoms: wear a mask for 10 days, test for COVID on Day 5 YES Symptoms: follow recommendations for moderate/multiple symptoms (above)Wilton Public Schools COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols (continued)
