Today we worship Christ Jesus one who is not unfamiliar with our limitations We come to worship the Christ who took our limitations unto himself We worship a Savior who does not lay his cross upon us We come in humble adoration of the Christ who takes our cross upon himself O come let us worship the Christ who reveals God s true nature of love for us Hymn 151 Beneath the Cross of Jesus Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land A home within the wilderness a rest upon the way from the burning of the noontide heat and the burden of the day Upon that cross of Jesus mine eyes at times can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me and from my smitten heart with tears two wonders I confess the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness I take O cross thy shadow for my abiding place I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face content to let the world go by to know no gain nor loss my sinful self my only shame my glory all the cross Amen Prayer of Confession Ever living and ever loving God how frayed our lives have become Our days seem but a collection of loose ends tarnished glories and hazy dreams We have not kept our eyes on your saving cross nor listened with undivided attention to your voice We have not sought your presence among the destitute nor accepted ourselves as persons for whom you died Stretch our boundaries stir our hearts and inflame our souls to the end that we will behold you in every fragment of life feel you in every moment of time and to serve you in every occasion with obedience and joy Amen Words of Assurance Jesus took our sins upon himself that we would be forgiven and free Thanks be to God Scripture Lesson Isaiah 53 1 6 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed He grew up before him like a tender shoot and like a root out of dry ground He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him nothing in his appearance that we should desire him He was despised and rejected by mankind a man of suffering and familiar with pain Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised and we held him in low esteem Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering yet we considered him punished by God stricken by him and afflicted But he was pierced for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities the punishment that brought us peace was on him and by his wounds we are healed We all like sheep have gone astray each of us has turned to our own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all Readings and Reflections of Christ s Seven Last Words from the Cross The First Word Luke 23 33 34 Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing Reflection Consider how often we blame punish or malign others in order to ease our anger Jesus first thought is about the blindness of our human understanding brought forgiveness The Second Word Luke 23 43 Today you will be with me in paradise The Third Word John 19 25 27 Behold your son Behold your mother The Fourth Word Mark 15 33 34 My God my God why have you forsaken me
