Provide Self-Care Kits tomultiple partner hospitals tobe used by the social workteam, educating andsupporting teen cancerfighters to learn how to helpthemselves feel better.Support individual teens toreceive their own unique MIP Kit – a collection ofitems to alleviate stress anddecrease anxiety all whileencouraging wellness.The MIP Foundation was created because myson Colin was told he had cancer. We did notknow that four years later, at age 18, he wouldmake the decision to be removed from lifesupport, passing away on April 19, 2018.As his mother and the founder of The MIPFoundation, I knew that empowering teenagersand young adults with cancer to be a part oftheir treatment plan, while gaining coping skillswas paramount to successfully moving on fromcancer. Be that through reaching remission andresuming their life or by finding the strength tounderstand they had done all they possiblycould to get better. Now, The MIP Foundation partners withChildren’s Hospital of Philadelphia, NemoursChildren’s Hospital and St. Christopher’sHospital for Children, connecting with teenagersand young adults. By working with thepsychosocial teams, we empower teens who arelooking for ways to gain more control over whatfeels like a very out of control time in their life. Turning Pain Into Power! The MIP Foundation provides mental healthand wellness tools that are personal andunique to each teen’s needs. These copingtools encourage and support learning newways to manage the profound changescreated by a cancer diagnosis. In finding ways to manage cancer, each teenis better able to be a part of their treatmentplan, learning how to turn their pain intopower. With these coping tools, MIPs aregaining lifelong skills.The MIP Foundation’s mission is to fosterand promote mental health support andpsychosocial services for Adolescents andYoung Adult (AYA) oncology patients. MissionMIP means Most Important Person! A MIP is any teenager that is fighting canceror working towards recovering. Each MIP istruly the most important person in theirtreatment plan.purposeMIP
Why Are AYAs Unique?Think back to your teenage years. Good memories or bad, one thing forcertain is the teen years are aboutnavigating a unique and veryimportant developmental state. Teen years are spent exploringindividuality and identity, discoveringsupport systems and encounteringlife milestone. A cancer diagnosisduring this stage of development is ahuge explosion during an alreadychallenging time. Suddenly, a teen finds themselvesdealing with very grown-up scenariosbut have not yet had the lifeexperience to learn how to manageand cope with the challenges theyare facing, as illustrated on thefollowing pages.An AYA is an adolescent or young adult (AYA) cancerpatient between 13–25 andare recognized as a distinctpopulation within theoncology community due tothe unique challenges theyface throughout theirdisease trajectory.
