Dear Georgia Military College Preparatory Community,I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support of the many activities and athletic programs here at GMC Preparatory School. Whether we are parents, teachers, sta, alumni, or Bulldog supporters, we are proud of our students as they dedicate and commit themselves to their chosen athletic endeavors.Interscholastic athletic programs have been established because research indicates a student involved in co-curricular activities has a greater chance for success during adulthood. Your child will learn values such as hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship, interpersonal relationships, honesty, and how to strive for success. Many of the character traits required to be a successful participant are the same as those that will promote a successful life after high school. With your help and positive support of the sta and faculty, the experience will be rewarding for all.Our athletics department believes in educational athletics which promote quality and the character of each student-athlete. We work diligently to oer the best experience and opportunities for our athletes both academically and athletically where students are challenged in sports’ competitions as well as the classroom. The GMC “experience” stresses personal character with emphasis on the values of respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship. Our community has high standards in regard to sportsmanship and conduct. We expect our students and coaches to uphold these standards at all times. I would ask that you, as a spectator, reinforce these standards when you interact with the opposing teams, coaches and contest ocials. We expect student-athletes to hold themselves to high standards of sportsmanship, and hope parents and other fans will themselves serve as role models for our students by exhibiting high standards of sportsmanship as well. Ocials and game management personnel are there to make this a positive experience for everyone. Please treat them accordingly and address issue that you experience as a spectator. The athletic department is grateful to our parents and members of the GMC Bulldog Club who provide unrelenting support, energy and enthusiasm for our student-athletes and coaches. The boys and girls varsity basketball teams have a reason to be excited as they enter the 2018-2019 season! Coming hot off the heels of record breaking seasons, both teams take the court this year with aspirations of competing well into the State playoffs for the second year in a row. Coach James Lunsford returns as the varsity boys head coach again for 2018-2019. The 2017-2018 Public School Coach of the Year has been honored as Region and State Coach of the Year, Georgia Hall of Fame Finalist, and Gatorade Coach of the Year Award. Coach Lunsford is presently in the Albany State University Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievements in Games won by GACA, served on GACA All-Star Committee, Coach of the South GACA All-Star Team, Middle Georgia All-Star Team, Coached and Directed the Georgia-Tennessee All-Star game, Coached the Georgia/Boston All-Star Team, and served on the Nike Grassroots Board. His overall career coaching record is 790-293 and his record at GMC now stands at 121-72. While he enjoys success on the court, he’s most proud of coaching and mentoring youth who may use the sport as a vehicle to go further in life; helping over 400 student athletes receives scholarships to further their collegiate academic and athletic careers. Using the mission of GMC Prep “Develop the intellect and elevate the character,” Coach Lunsford carries the expectation of honor and character from the classroom to the court. “We have developed a bulldog’s basketball culture that is one of the most competitive in the State. With outstanding guard play lead by Malik Foston and Jalen Milner, highlighted by experience and a group of delightful young student athletes such as Justin Wallace, Jordan Bradley, Chris Trussell, Jabari Dixon, and Keith Robbins. Combine our veteran coaching staff of Dustin Archebelle, Brian Milner, Logan Cook, and Jermaine Lango with a very supportive administrative, and we’ve got the recipe for success.” The Bulldogs begin the season ranked as a preseason favorite where voters put the team atop the leaderboard at #2 in the State. Coach intends to somehow improve on last year’s historic record of 25-4, 16-2 in the Sub-Region where they finished 2nd, and were ultimately ranked 9th in the State. The Bulldogs played into the third round of State Playoff and won more basketball games last year in one season than any other season in history. The Bulldogs also remain undefeated at home. Coach Lunsford looks to his seniors Foston and Milner to remain key leaders on the court. Foston, who scored his 1000 point during his junior season, wraps up his career as a senior Bulldog where he has accomplished so much during his last four years. Foston steps on the court ranked in the Top 10 in the state by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, All Region, Union Recorder Player of the Year, won an AAU national championship where he was named MVP. Last year he was GMC’s MVP for Best Offense and Defense, and led in rebounding and assists. Foston has also started every game at GMC. Milner has been another top performer, being named All Region, All Union Recorder, and an AAU All-Star. Coach Lunsford names other players to watch as Jamond Butts, Justin Wallace, Jabari Dixon, Keith Robbins, and Jordan Bradley. Coaches Dustin Archebelle and Logan Cook look to continue the hot winning streak of last year’s historic Middle School boys’ season as well. For the first time in program history the boys entered the region tournament as the top seed with an overall record of 13-2 and 10-1 in the Region. The boys ultimately fell to Tattnall in a heart-breaker to end the season as Region Runner Up, but they are back this year to avenge their loss. The boy’s junior varsity team had a successful season under the helm of Coach Archebelle as well. Finishing their season 8-3 last year, the group continued to work on their fundamentals and team play as they competed against a similar schedule of region games that mirror the varsity. This group of continuously improving student athletes annually fuels the success of the varsity team in every ongoing year. As the boys varsity team was busy winning on the court, the Lady Bulldogs varsity girls were quietly having one of their best seasons in history as well! Coach Shawn Dennis, who graduated in 2007 from GC&SU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education, enters his 6th season as the head girls’ basketball coach at GMC. Along with coaching basketball and football, Coach Dennis has coached track and field as an assistant and as the head coach helping to set school records as well as win two Area and State Championships. After a year of coaching middle school basketball, Coach Dennis become the boys’ varsity assistant coach for four years before he moved over to the girls program as the varsity assistant. Since 2013 Coach Dennis has been busy developing the girls’ basketball program into an extremely competitive program recognized throughout the State of Georgia. After a tough initial varsity season, only winning 3 games, Coach Dennis and the Lady Dogs began to turn their losing record into a winning tradition by defeating 16 teams the following year and making the State Playoffs the year after. The past three seasons, the Lady Dogs have reached the GHSA State Playoff Sweet 16. Last season, along with making the playoffs, the team won 15 games before losing as Coach Dennis and the Lady Dogs cruised to one of the best records in school history with a record of 24 wins and only 4 loses. Head Junior Varsity Coach Laurie Simpson, and Head Middle School Coach Jennifer Deason look to continuously build the fundamentals of the younger Lady Bulldogs. The Junior Varsity returns undefeat-ed from their (7-0) 2017-2018 campaign. While the junior varsity is comprised of mostly underclassmen, Coach Deason and Coach Simpson spend most of their time developing the skills and game strategy with the younger Lady Dogs. Coach Deason looks to continue building team play with a more seasoned squad for 2018-2019. Coach Deason and Coach Simpson focus on developing their players into being leaders on and off the court.Coach Kate McGhee joins the program as a first year assistant coach for the Middle School teams. She was a recent graduate of GMC Prep where she played on the varsity team for four years and looks forward to coaching and mentoring this group of young ladies. “Developing a Basketball Tradition”GMC Prep Basketball6
